Never fashionable or cool, but one of the best Aussie built cars ever – With my simple 3.5 litre TJ Executive wagon nudging 300,000km, only now starting to use a bit of oil and never having had anything let go that wasn't an expected wear item, it has now surpassed what I've ever had out of an Aussie Ford (XF) or Holden (VL). It hasn't seen a garage a day in it's life and how it isn't rusting is a complete mystery… Read more

(try that with a VL!). Even in '86 the Magna was better built than the VL or XF but with that horrifically bad 2.4 Astron II it deserved to get hounded by all. What the Adelaide crew did to arrive (peak IMO) in 2002 at the TJ was amazing. A superbly built car with an engine like a dynamo. Find one that has been well looked after and with less than 200k on the clock and you have a fine car that will be cheap to run, more power, bigger boot and lower fuel consumption than a typical SUV plus spare parts everywhere and sensible tyre sizes. Only hitch is how far the world has moved in safety terms; if you want safety, you can't look as far back as 2002. Sure, at the time it was up there; it stops quicker than a Falcon or Commodore or the same vintage (higher power to weight too, ahem), it has ABS, EBD and an Airbag or two but that doesn't cut it in 2017 and it no doubt dropped off the bottom of the ANCAP scale a while ago..if that's on the priority list for you. For now, I'm enjoying the last few years before inevitable retirement (of the car that it).

TJ VRX MAGNA I LOVE THIS CAR – From the moment I first jumped in this car I was in aww!!! I turned the ignition and the dash lights up red what a shock then turn the ignition again and the engine roars to life pull out of the driveway and take it for a test drive down the road oh!!! the power so smooth the way it holds you firmly into the seat with the sheer amount of torque… Read more

and the sound of the engine resonating through the exhaust. These cars were so underrated Mitsubishi's biggest mistake were they were not advertising the amount of power and torque from the 3.5 litre power plant and how it was delivered to such a beautifully refined transmission these cars were quicker than falcons and commodores of this era this includes their sport models and V8s I have had this car now for 7 years and I spare no expense at all on this car it still looks looks as beautiful as the day I got it drives like new it has 230000ks on the odometer I only use all the quality fluids for it I have never had an issue with the car it never uses oil.The transmission is still perfect after all these years shift is so smooth still pink oil every service. The interior is absolutely stunning still looks like showroom finish I could not recommend a more well built refined car that still is up with today's technology in performance believe me the amount of audi's and BMW's that try to get me to race off at the lights but I never do I baby it everywhere although I do get the compliment's on the way it looks this was by far one of Australia's best built car's I do believe they are the WOLF IN SHEEP"s CLOTHING this is coming from someone who was a dead set Ford fan that took this particular car for a test drive and was sold within about 30 seconds of driving it that's my opinion anyways.

Super reliable 2001 Solara – Purchased brand new for $32k including tow bar. Very powerful car. Easily pulls our 12ft Jayco Eagle. Put on gas in 2008 when the govt. had all those rebates available. few batteries over the years and had a small oil leak that was easily fixed.

New front and rear shockers a five years ago.

Very disappointed that Bridgestone stopped making RE92 tyres. They suited this car perfectly.

Driven 240,000 kms now and only put two and a half new sets on!

Would love to buy a new car, but this old girl is fantastic. Never thought we would have this car for 14 years. Probably last a few more before wear and tear starts to get the better of her. Showing her age now with bits and pieces of the interior peeling. Also a few squeaks and groans...but she is in better shape than us after 14 years in the family.

This car has been so good that we bought a Lancer to replace our small car a few years ago. Hope that Mitsy gives us over 10 years of service as well!

Best cheap used car to buy – If you are on a tight budget, and you need a car to get to work or school/study then these are a great option, especially if you live or work in a rural area and you commute on country roads. refined than the equivalent commodore or falcon and have great low down torque, making them really effortless to drive and overtake. And their unloved status makes them amazingly good value compared with the Toyota Camry that if you’re looking at cars this price point, you’re probably finding are considerably more expensive.

We’ve had our current Magna a year now, but across our whole extended family, we’ve had 13 of them. All of them driven to 300k+ km with minimal problems and no repairs or maintenance more than $500 (not including tyres). They do burn oil though so you gotta keep an eye on it, check it every couple of weeks and make sure you don’t run it dry.

The worst thing about them is the lack of technology, and so you’re going to want to bring a Bluetooth speaker in the car, or an fm transmitter or even change out the head unit for one with Bluetooth so you can listen to your own music and podcasts etc.

Most underrated Australian car – If kept up with maintenance you cant get a better family car, big boot for the double pram. If serviced regularly they drive really nice and are very reliable, I'm definitely planning to keep mine for a long time, just fix what us needed and keep up to services and you'll have a good car for a long time.  Show details

Reliable work horse – Mine does 1000km per week and has now done 435,000km, in my travels on country roads to and from work. Averaging 8.1L per 100km it is remarkably fuel efficient for a car of its age. It is very comfortable to drive and due to regular servicing I have never had a mechanical issue. Still running very well, and I would recommend to anyone seeking a reliable work horse.  Show details

The undervalued car, Magna – Magna is undervalued for some reason can't figure out why but probably people didn't like v6 with front wheel drive ? TJ all the way! – I reckon the TJ is the best looking, the last 2 models frontal treatment, was a matter of what were they thinking?! When they came out in 2000, I was seriously considering buying the VR/X model, I was driving a TP at the time, (am still driving a TP -not the same one though) anyway, recently I bought a 2000 TJ Executive, in awesome condition, for $300. The performance is better than my 300SE Mercedes (which cost considerably more)  Show details

Great car – I've had my TJ magna for over a year now, i got it with about 138'000ks in July 2014, up to date its now clocked over 165'000ks. Really responsive and quick when you need to overtake, i have the 5spd manual, and i can get up a steep hill with 5 people in 5th gear quite comfortably! it's not a hard manual to drive, its fairly easy and the way the… Read more

gears are set up is quite nice in the magna. I have the executive model, but it has a few added features like power windows and a rear spoiler which makes the car real sporty looking. I regularly clean my car so i have no paint fade or any clear coat peeling like a majority of magnas i see. If you care for your car then it will look good! so far I've had no major issues, i did have to replace the heater core which was a task and a half, my father was able to do it for me because all the mechanics were charging and arm and a leg because of the effort it is to change it! and I do need to look at replacing the rear muffler as it has some rust and sounds shocking (common problem in magnas) I try to put premium fuel in my car and never let it get to the red light. It can be a bit heavy on the juice, but I have a heavy foot so that's probably the reason why, I normally average about 11lt per 100, although long trips are brilliant!

It's reasonable comfy but ford has more head room, being a bigger bloke i find it difficult to sit in the back seat of the magnas as I don't have any space above my head! ill probably keep the car for another year or 2 as its got reasonably low k's and is running really good!

My Dream car became a reality! – I purchased my vr-x brand new in 2000. After seeing a photo of the prototype I was in love. At the moment my beast has 318000 kms on the clock and apart from a pesky oil leak that no one seems to be able to fix. She is still as quick off the mark as she was new. and haven't seen anything comparable to her. If I had the money I would rebuild her from the tyres up.

Between my husband and I we have owned 7 Mitsubishi's. All from new and not one of them gave us a minutes trouble.

The "Mitsubishi Haters" out there need to actually drive one before they form an opinion about these fantastic cars.

April 7th 2017 Update: My Dream Car became a reality - Follow Up

For those of you interested in a follow up to my first review.

My beautiful cars engine finally wore out at 342000kms making it uneconomical to repair.

But not being able to part with her when her body and interior was in such very good condition I have left her with a highly recommended custom car builder who is going to work his magic on her.

This car was a bullet from the first drive to the last and will be again. In 16 years my opinion of her drive, comfort and enjoyment never waivered. I drove her hard and enjoyed every second of it. In city traffic and on open roads, overtaking was effortless. Though understanding can be a problem for the uninitiated. Spend the money on good tyres and this car sticks to the road like glue. Don't, and at speed in the wet you will never control it.

Never having driven a sedan before, parking, whether reverse or parallel was so easy. The interior though dated by today's standards is still appealing and I considered it to be ahead of its time.

Internally I will only make a few cosmetic modifications mainly new seats, roof lining, etc. most of the work will be under the bonnet and some structural work as required. After all she is 17 years old now and she has worked hard for me.

For those of you looking for an uncommon car with "personality and spirit" these cars are not to be overlooked. Take one for a test drive at the very least. And ladies don't be deterred by its size, this car is perfect for women. Especially if you like to shop. I have carried so much IKEA flat packs home in her, rugs, blinds, etc. it all fits though the hole in the seats or with the front seat layed down. The legroom front and back is spacious. The boot is huge, even with a proper spare tyre in there. None of these go flat rubbish tyres. The new cars of today are overpriced plastic that are mostly written off after a slight bumb and full of things which constantly break down.

I am unashamedly a lover of my Mitsubishi Magna vrx and recommend them very highly.

Great car, love it! Age has shown some problems though – I bought this car as my first car at the start of the year. Got it for a great price with 230000 on the clock. Although it's a 2000 base model it still has some great features like power steering and mine came with cruise control. I've had people ask if it's a >2005 model car as it still looks modern! The only major problem I've had was… Read more

replacing a worn wheel bearing but keep in mind I drove down the east coast.

Love the V6 engine, has plenty of power. Fuel consumption in the city is a bit high but hit the highway and it drops considerably. I would definitely recommend this car, love it!

Update: After owning it for 3 years now my opinion is changing. I've put 50,000 kms on the clock since I got it. Problems I've encountered are engine leaks, rotors needing replacing, muffler needing replacing, battery, tyres, shock absorbers and now engine mounts. Most of those I would attribute to general wear & tear and are legitimate considering the age of the vehicle. The paint has suffered from sun damage too and is peeling on the hood, the roof and the bootlid. I do a lot of highway kms for work and still find the fuel economy surprisingly good (6L/100kms). Regardless, I'm looking forward to moving over to a small hatch! Nice power, light steering, nice storage spots, large seats, comfortable, modern styling. High fuel consumption.

Ralliart Magna – Purchased a one year old VY commodore in 2004. Had so many issues with it, returned to the dealer 5 times for warranty replacement issues. It's now 2014 and I've had the car for 8 years. I still get excited to drive it!

I absolutely adore this car. Not only has it been trouble free, it still looks as good as the day I bought it . It is fast, comfortable, refined, well built and travels marvelously on all road types.

I have driven many cars of all makes and sizes, also much newer cars and I would not even bother with them. I will drive this car until it stops, which I can only assume it will be good for another 10 years. Well done mitsubishi Australia and Ed Ordynski. You've created a car that goes and feels better than $100,000 European cars. 180kw's of power, build quality, front bucket seats, sound system, mechanicals, suspension, exhaust, ride comfort. Mitsubishi stopped making them.

Servicing has been cheap and we only run 98 Octane in it to help keep it going well. The fuel economy is pretty good too. There is a bit of a rattle now when it starts (still always starts without a problem though) which is apparently due to the lifters getting sticky. Mechanic said there is really nothing you can do about it so not to worry and it's common in Magna's of this age. We are reluctantly buying a new car as this just has a few too many klm and is starting to look a bit old, and we need a ute for a business. Wish we could clone this wonderful car! All round excellent car – I've now owned a Mitsubishi Magna Advance Wagon for the last four years and can swear by it's reliability. I purchased this car second hand for $9000 with only 80000km's on the clock. I've since put another 70000kms on the car and it has proved itself to be very cheap to run. purchase price was the deciding factor. Initially I saw this car as a stop gap purchase while I saved a bit more to purchase a Mazda 6. I still have the Magna and I'm no longer looking for a Mazda, it's that good.

The engine is smooth, fugile and powerful. I'm regularly get under 8 litres per 100km on country trips. It uses a bit over 10L/100km in town.

The auto always seems to find the right gear and so intuitive that I think it is hard wired to my brain.

The interior quality is excellent and is showing no signs of wear after 10 years.

Steering feel is good at speed, but can be a little vague at lower speeds.

I've had the same set of tires on the car for nearly 70000km's and they still look like they have at least 10000kms before they need to be replaced.

I haven't had to change brake pads whilst I've owned the car. According to the service records the fronts were changed prior to my purchase, but the rears are original. When the car is serviced I always ask the mechanic to check the rear pads and he is amazed by the small amount of wear between services.

Load space is huge, it puts a lot of more modern equivalents to shame.

The Advance model has a lot of features and all work as advertised.

Highly recommended car. It you considering purchasing one, just make sure it has a decent service history. Reliability, cost of ownership and nice to drive

handles fine, it's pretty efficient with fuel and all the air conditioning, radio, etc works just fine. The battery died on me once but other then that the cars still pretty dependable and gets me from A to B with no problem. The only real con is that the plastic around the windows is starting to peel away and needs strong glue and a good DIY job to stay air tight. It's had dozens of services over the years and while the time between services is shrinking (time before new problems arise), the car is still dependable and drives just fine. However if considering buying this car look at the specific details (kilometers, engine problems of that particular car etc) this can only give a general guide. Solidly dependable, fuel efficiency, good space, standard features work just fine. Perfect car for someone who just needs an A-B and has little money. Window plastic starting to peel away, not a car for someone who likes cars.

I drive many different new fleet sedans each day at work (Falcon, Commodore, Aurion) and always smile when I get back into our Magna Sport because, for comfort, build quality and performace theee newer cars are no better. The clear coat on the paint has started to go milky in patches on the bonnet and I had the spoiler resprayed, this is a bit disspoainting as I have really cared for the duco. for regular services and a few small things that wear out, until recently when we had the heater matrix start leaking. Replacement of this was half the price quoted by our mechanic, based on his experience with other cars of similar size. I find driving position and seats are more comfortable than the Ford and Commodore. We have done nearly 200K, country and city mileage, in it so its has been well worked. and she is happy with hers too! Very reliable car. You can pretty much run these into the ground and they still get back up to drive another day! Not much to dislike at all...

outstanding handling the 2003 TJ AWD Magna has the best handling I have ever felt I have not been in a better handling car before. The Magna range has a very good reliable engine with a strong reliable history of no faults unlike other makes of cars and the Magna range is very well priced. Magnas were not marketed good enough I think Mitsubishi should have put more effort into marketing there cars a bit better because I have yet to find a single problem with one of there beautiful cars.

Good – A really good performer and while it doesn't have the creature comforts of our previous Magna, an Elite, it does the job and quite pleasantly as well. Ours is a TJ Sports mfg 2000 and we bought new 2001. Really impressive power when needed (on the Kings Highway this matters), long distance economy acceptable (720k on 115kph cruise control), none… Read more

of the trim has fallen off or broken or ceased to work except the radio, pulls the boat and heavily laden trailers with ease up and down steep slopes where the ability to switch to sequential gearing is a blessing. Only part to be replaced is the muffler after 150k. Don't understand the low resale value for a powerful, well handling superb sports ride that does everything very very well. Poor quality of the duco. We have a few bumps and scratches which have gone right through the duco - even branches of shrubs in the curving driveway will mark if they are not kept trimmed. Also poor economy around town, 13 - 14 litres per 100k.

Excellent – I would recommend the Magna as a good overall family car. Due to bad publicity it's had an effect on the value of the Magna which people must wonder why are they so cheap to buy compared to say Toyota. I found that it is a value for dollar car which is worth a lot more then you pay. I would value the 05 model as being worth at least 22-24 grand… Read more

and we could have bought it for 16500 drive away. It had everything. We chose to watch our budget and purchase a 02 model that a elderly gentleman had and it is in spotless condition for 11 grand. That car was worth 34 grand new and it still drives like a new car. I cannot see the sense in wasting that amount of money when we will own this car for a good couple of years and maybe only loose 5 grand when we trade but I can tell you that we will have our money's worth. I rate this car a 5 out of 5. Comfortable car to drive, responsive power, it delivers is reassuring when you need it, excellent on fuel economy, was not expensive in terms of what you get. Is there any? Well the remote decides to not work sometimes but it's no drama to use the key. Ours is the 2002 model and I guess something has to be a pain.

Excellent – This car is now a bargain in car yards. A good one with low kays will set you back a lot less than a comparable Holden or Ford and is a much better car, IMHO. They were even sold in the US (as the "Diamante") and, as such, were designed to sell against BMWs! They are a credit to the soon to be closed Tonsley Park SA factory and its workers.… Read more

Brilliant handling in my TJ (2001) Magna Solara, great build quality, powerful engine and good economy for a large car. The best car I have ever owned (and I've owned many cars in my years), bar none. They are a credit to Mitsubishi Australia and it's quite sad to see the company is no longer making cars here. The only negative is that the car has a big turning circle compared with RWD cars.
