tell them the finance is not approved but they assure me this is just a glitch so we book for Friday between 9 to 11 am.11am comes no one here so I ring and ask where their man is as I have been waiting around all morning. The lady named [Name Removed] then tells me yes yes there was was a booking but we were advised that the finance was not approved. So no contact from them that this was the case just wasted the whole morning waiting for them to measure and it was up to me to ring them to be told finance not approved. Disrespectful Consultant – We called out Modern Group to give us a quote on shutters. A consultant came out, measured and ran us through the product. out the next day however I had to attend something and could not be present. My parents don't have fluent English like I do, they are not as advanced as I am however for a second language, they can understand if spoken at a slower rate.
The rudeness of the consultant was extraordinary. Not only did he speak really fast, when my mother asked him for his name again, his response was "I've already told my name to your son" (said 3 times) and then proceeded to give his business card for her to read off. He then told my mother there would be no more questions and cut her off. Apparently he tried to call me multiple times that day however I was at a farm with no reception, so the consultant was huffing and puffing (most likely because he could not close the deal that day).
Now you may wonder how I found out about this, I found out from the painter at my house (we are undergoing major renovations before we move in). The painter was having a good laugh about it and when I confronted my mother, she told me her experience. On top of all of this, my mother told me to let it go, well I'm not.
If the consultant working for Modern Group thinks he can disrespect my parents under my roof and then quote me $20k for shutters and expect me give my business to them, he is seriously living in a fantasy land.
Furthermore, as this has left a bad taste in our mouths, we have family friends who are planning a major renovation that'll cost them upwards of $250k. They are not going to consider Modern Group either. They have as many windows as we do and if we assume they would be quoted the same amount, now the loss is potentially $40k.
Tell your consultants to be respectful amd patient, they are costing your business money.
It is not surprising that when I went through the reviews there seems to be a similar pattern.

All other suppliers spent 15 minutes and provided a quote without asking to come inside! He left when I told him we had another appointment without providing a quote. After a few failed attempts the quote finally arrived by text for $ 8,250 which we thought was ridiculous and said that to [Name Removed] when he made a follow up call some days later. He apologised for our experience and said he was in a senior management position, could overrule [Name Removed] quote and would send us a better offer for our consideration when I said we couldn't even consider the ridiculous price on the original quote. He then sends a quote - "Updated proposal for roller shutters 571780" - for nearly half the price originally quoted so I wrote to him on 10 June 2025 as follows but still waiting for a response!

I am gobsmacked by the markdown in your latest offer! How can we trust your company if you were looking to rip me off with such a massive inflated price in the first place? You guys are very dodgy, unprofessional and unethical in all your dealings and therefore cannot be trusted. P.S. Eventually got exactly the same shutters at less than half the price from another supplier who were transparent, honest and professional in all their dealings with us and great with after sales service and any questions. The owner even spent a couple of hours setting up remote wifi access for us at no extra cost after the installation. We even ended up getting a second round of Shutters as we were so happy with the product. There's a few cowboys out there making people feel like they are getting big discounts and there's always a good deal on atm, blah blah blah so "Buyer Beware" indeed and do shop around

organising the callout. When she quoted me the price for a new motor, I asked if there was any chance of a discount as I was a repeat customer. Without any fuss she worked out the best price she could offer me, which I accepted. It wasn't a huge discount but that's not the point: I was so pleased with her no-nonsense attitude that I asked if I could formally compliment her somehow. She invited me to submit something here, which I now have, without any reservation. job. We explained we would have the funds available end of April and was told that would be fine and they are just organising the schedule and would be in touch to book in dates around end of April. Week later they call and say we will be there in 30 mins to clean the roof....no notice, no warning, just showed up. We explained we have a disabled mother in law living with us so need ample warning and we don't have the funds yet! [Name Removed] who we spoke to numerous times on the phone was SO rude and said we won't be able to do any work until you pay. He quickly changed his tune and apologised when we expressed how unhappy we were and wouldn't recommend the company and explained they have a few bad reviews so would like to change our opinions and cleaned the roof without payment. (3 days later we received the funds and phoned first thing to make 1st payment)
The SUB CONTRACTORS were lovely and apologised that this was happening and ensured next time we would have notice to organise things around them. Unfortunately this didn't happen and THREE times they showed up with no warning or notice expecting to do the work, even when it was raining! This was VERY frustrating, Modern and the Sub-contractors were blaming each other, shock.
In total the completed the work was done in 2 days and then demanded the money even though they knew they were to leave 15 tiles spare but didn't have any. So we refused until our tiles had been dropped off. They came today and I was happy to make payment and asked how much is owed I then overheard [Name Removed] on loud speaker say to the contractor 'they have the contract, they can look at what they owe' WOW(I was stood outside in my pjs at 7:30am) 'make sure you get receipt of payment from THOSE people' I sent the receipt but that wasn't good enough, they wanted a screenshot showing the payment had been paid. How disrespectful! My partner is at work and his since received 3 missed calls from them as the sub contractor gave me the wrong outstanding amount. NOT our fault but proceeded to tell me partner we have the contract, we know what we owe.
I certainly won't recommend this company and will never use them again. The clearly are so desperate for money and are just COWBOYS. Don't waste your money and go to a company that looks after you and cares. Don't make the same mistake we did.

but here was a definite sale. Phone calls were not returned and while office staff were pleasant, action was limited. Since this window faces East and there is no longer any weather protection in summer, I think it is essential to have a replacement as soon as possible. One window is not a big sale but the PR is invaluable. Have started seeking quotes from other suppliers.

Kept calling the boss and offering a further discount if we allowed a sign at the front of the house and looked put out when we didn't go for it (apparently it had to be done on the spot or the offer was gone). He also said several times how everyone else's products were inferior. He just did some vague calculations on the back of a blank sheet of paper, by the end of the hour that had been reduced by half. wife were available for the appointment. On the day, the salesman showed up and ran me through the process. He would measure my windows, then tell me about the company and the products, then go through the pricing.
Things got quite interesting after that. He gave me a full history of the company. Fair enough, good to have a little bit of background to know the company isn't going to go broke half way through the process. Then an explanation of the product stressing how the technology was exclusive to Modern, and their competitors' products were of inferior quality with materials made in China while theirs were all made in Australia. That would be a good selling point if it were true. Several of their competitors manufacture right here in Australia. This immediately left a bad taste in my mouth. He was being dishonest. If you need to bag your competitors to sell your product it tells me you don't have confidence in your own product to be able to sell it on its merits.
In any case, I let him have some rope. Next came the pricing. He already knew that we were eligible for the 41% family and friends discount. but when he did his calculations (on a paper pad with a pencil, long hand multiplication and division. Why such a large company doesn't have quotation software on the laptop he brought with him is questionable. At least a calculator!) After his calculations he showed us a figure which I believe to be way over budget for most people. He paused a bit to let my wife and I look at each other in disappointment. Then he says "That's the price with a 10% discount which we would normally give." Let me tell you what the family and friends discount does for you."
Then he proceeds to do his back of the envelope maths again and shows us another figure. Still quite hefty based on a little bit of online research I had done. I politely told him that we would need to think about it and we would call him back. Then he got a little stroppy and said "What is there to think about? You're getting a really good price!"I told him still, he was the first quote and I like to get a few different quotes to compare the product and value for money. Then he started bagging their competition again saying that they were all made in China and I would regret it. I told him that it's not true and that the two other companies I had invited to quote manufacture in Australia. He asked me who they were and when I told him he said he'd never heard of them. (This would be a lie because these two companies have regular tv, radio and print ads. Since he told me he'd been with Modern for 20 years I found it a little odd that he didn't know who his major competitors are.
Then he reaches up his sleeve for another trick when he says, Äctually, the quote I've given you is wrong, I gave you that 41% off on the 10% discounted price rather than the original price, but I'm happy to honour that for you. Let me ring the office to see if it's ok" After a brief discussion. "The manager says that since it was my error (how convenient!) I have to honour it. You won't get a better price than this!"
I told him nevertheless, it is still a large amount of money to be spending, and I would feel much better about spending it once I had done my due diligence. Then he said, "well there's not much more I can do here then. I decided I would not be going with this company regardless of the quality or even if they discounted more. It was an awful experience with an old school dodgy used car type sales approach which was totally disrespectful of me as a customer.
Contrast this with the next quote from a rival company, who were honest and open. The quality of the product was similar, they had software that produced a quote based on the number of windows and dimensions and an allowable discount which still came in significantly below Modern's "special price". I would have been happy to go with Modern if he had been honest and ethical.

Quality and Reasonably Priced – We installed roller shutters in our house recently, The modern group team in Sydney are very efficient at their work, the roller shutters are great quality and reasonably priced. Room for Improvement – The installation of four, full length Modern Group bifold shutters across the glass frontage of the lounge of my rental property produced bent hinges, misaligned shutters and peeled/cracked veneer. improvement. But still the bifolds will not stay closed due, apparently, to the uneven floor The consultant’s recommendation now is to drill deep into the frame and insert magnets. The shutters hang from a single rail across the full width of the room. They are secured at the base by another rail across the full width of the floor. The base rail has been cut in the middle and the join is uneven with one side higher than the other. It is my opinion that precise adjustment to the base rail (and possibly the upper rail as well), would solve the problem. Magnets were neither discussed nor included in the quote. Magnets appear to be a shortcut, stopgap measure. I am concerned that the use and installation of magnets through the vinyl wrap into the composite material of the frames, will, over time, cause the shutters to deteriorate in a way that would not occur with perfect installation and as such any responsibility acceptable to MG will be well past. These shutters were installed in late 2019. In the interim, my tenants have lost time at work waiting for tradesmen who haven’t arrived at scheduled times. They have been inconvenienced both practically and aesthetically. Their recommendation is that they continue to keep the shutters closed by propping cushions against the base of the bifolds. In conclusion, I feel that I must accept my tenants’ recommendations as there is a limit to the tolerance of prized tenants. However, I must say that the Modern Group quote was by far the most expensive of the three that I obtained. And as such, Modern Group has failed badly with regard to the guarantee that these shutters would be perfectly installed to the highest standard. However, the fitting of the bedroom window shutters and the two full length bifolds in the main bedroom have not resulted in any problems and have not given any cause for complaint which is why I have given an overall rating of three stars.
