Nissan X-Trail, Global-model flaws, Cover-up and apparent Corporate Protection in Australia – A comfortable and good looking vehicle BUT the CVT transmission & aircon systems are very common, major (costly) defects known to occur from around 70k kilometres and around time 5 year warranty expires. Facebook owner sites reflect extent of problems. Internet searches will reveal these problems not unique to Australia. Nissan does its utmost… Read more
to deny existence of any such problems and VCAT show little interest in assisting affected owners. In North America, where class action lawsuits are common, Nissan has extended warranty coverage to 7 years and introduced related service bulletins (not available in Australia) for equivalent model X-Trail, a clear indication that Nissan is aware of the subject flaws. If only VCAT was as caring about the interests of affected owners as it appears to be about the corporate interests and reputation of Nissan.
36000km and catastrophic failure of electronic control module – This car drove ok, but with minimal km by elderly couple, I only discovered that an electronic control module failed at 36,000km after 6yrs and out of Nissan warranty. Also significant wear on the front tyres which is unusual for those kms. When the module failed on a hill it left me going backwards in a potentially life threatening situation.… Read more
Dealing with Nissan has been extremely difficult despite the car being regularly serviced, mostly by Nissan. It looks like I will have to take them to fair trading. Other minor problems are wires loose on their cameras, causing intermittent pictures and the difficulty of seeing to the near left and right of the car at slow speeds as the car frame at the front is quite wide and blocks the view. However the most difficult problem seems to be dealing with Nissan.

Ths sad truth - AC system and no responsibility by Nissan – Nissan X Trail: CYP51H. VIN: JN1TBNT32A0006482 Model: 2015 X Trail STL 4WD I bought the car, new, and received a substantial Government discount due to the fact that I am a Vietnam Veteran and hold a TPI Gold Card from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Conditioning started to malfunction. After 20-25 minutes it would simply cut out. As I was at a Vietnam Veterans Bi-Annual reunion on Phillip Island (I organise these events every two years: www.hq1atf.otg) I visited Diverse Auto Electrics in Cowes for them to ascertain the problem! To no avail.
On my return home to Merimbula, I visited my Nissan dealer (Momsen Motors in Bega) and they also checked the AC. Again I visited them just prior to Christmas as the problem continued. They basically told me that it could be a figment of my imagination!
I then contacted the TCS department at Nissan Australiat, spoke to a lady called [name removed], and was given a case number 1096548. I returned to Momsen Motors and they again, seemingly, rectified the problem. Nissan agreed to reimburse me an amount of $1200, via Momsen Motors even though the car was by then out of warranty. Nissan never did advise me of this offer, it was only through Momsen Motors that I found out the money was reimbursed after four phones and a one month waiting period.
Due to this ongoing problem and the AC still not being rectified I decided to just put up with it and buy a new car (probably a RAV 4, Hybrid) in early 2020. By then my business had been transferred to Ron Doyle Motors in Eden. You could say by this stage I was starting to feel a little fed up!
We went to Perisher in late August 2019 and found the heating also had the same problem. Enough is enough. My 130K service was due and on chatting with a most professional person at Ron Doyle Motors [name removed]) he decided to investigate.
The problem, he told me, was as detailed in Nissan Bulletin No: HAC 15-001 1. Air conditioner not working after approximately 30 minutes in use. 2. No air coming from the air vents after prolonged use. 3. Excessive water coming from air conditioner drain when vehicle has been turned off and parked for a while.
These three problems are exactly what was happening. As Nissans Bulletin states that the problem only occurred with vehicles built prior to 21 June 2014, the response from Nissan was interesting they advised by phone that my problem was not related to the Bulletin HAC 15-001. The person on the phone was quite direct and kept asking what I wanted. I said, fix the problem.
Ron Doyle Motors then advised me that they feel that the problem has been rectified as per Nissan Bulletin HAC 15-001 and hopefully it will rectify the heating as well. The problem has been rectified, some 75 per cent. However the AC still cuts out and we switch off the auto control, wait five minutes and put the fan on manually. With heating, it is the same scenario. Does anyone else have these problems as Nissan as simply washed their hands of the affair.
Great little family ferry - 7 seater, leather and enough bells and whistles to keep you entertained – We purchased this car second hand (2014) model around 6 months ago from the original owners. It had approximately 65000kms on the clock and was serviced regularly by Nissan during that time. One thing I highly recommend to everyone looking at ANY car, is make sure it has a full service history, it does not matter how new, it is worth it. … Read more
It is worth noting that we purchased this car for my wife, we have 4 children and had until recently had a Nissan Elgrand wagon. It was an 8 seater with so much room you could literally fit a bed in it, in fact the rear seats all folded down into a bed and could also be rearranged into a dining table with seating... honestly, best family car ever.
Having such a massive car for 8+ years had its downside. It was massive and my wife was a little sick of driving such a large vehicle around. So we decided to downsize and the X-Trail seemed to fit the bill perfectly with its 7 seats.
It ticked all the boxes. It was newer (Elgrand was a 1999) - tick, it was smaller - tick, it had leather - tick, it was smooth to drive - tick, it had 7 seats - tick.... you get the idea. The car looked practically brand new it had been looked after that well, with the only flaw being the rear bumper had been resprayed and wasn't quite the perfect match.
We did soon learn however, that while it was 7 seats, there was little else in the way of room for anything else. With our children being aged between 2 and 10 it does take some planning before we all get in and go. My 10 year old is reasonably tall at over 155cm so it is a squashy ride in the rear seats, so he can only go there when my wife is driving. When I am driving, at 6ft 2, I need the front chair back a bit more which leaves 0 leg room for him and my 6 year old. We thought about moving the toddler seat for the 2yo across to that side, but that would then mean getting her in and out on the road rather than the footpath which is not an option for obvious safety reasons.
With all the kids sorted, that leaves one of the rear seats down for loading in items. Yes unlike some cars the XTrail comes with split fold rear seats which is good. Prams are pretty much out of the question with all the kids in the car. A stroller will just fit between the seats and rear hatch and a bit of shopping with the other seat folded down.
As we do like to travel every now and then with the kids, I did install a tow bar on it myself and recently purchased an enclosed trailer to ensure we are actually able to pack enough clothes for more than half a day, so this is something to take into consideration if you have a large family.
Driving Experience:
It drives well. If you haven't driven a CVT transmission before it can be a little strange. It does not slow down like most automatic cars when you let your foot off the accelerator. The revs are maintained at a higher RPM for a more seamless transition through the gears. I found it a little annoying at first but got used to it pretty quickly.
It is a nice smooth ride and the seats are quite comfy and in those cold mornings the heated seats make you wonder how you have ever lived without them and how you will ensure that you will never be with out them again for all future vehicle purchases.
The car we purchased came with a decent touch screen entertainment unit including NAV, Bluetooth connect and DAB Radio (only just found this out the other day when fiddling with the radio features, probably should have read the manual). Using the Nissan Connect app on an iPhone or Android (iPhone is what we use) is a handy feature, we mainly just plug the phone into the USB port and control it through the buttons on the steering wheel or bluetooth connect which allows you to do the same thing including take calls through the car.
One of the down sides I have found is when you are running the AC or Heater at full blast or have a window down it can be very hard to hear on the other end as it sounds like you are in a typhoon.
As mentioned the car has a full service history and with all new Nissans they come with 6 year capped price servicing. We have put around 6000kms on it since owning it and took it in for its 70,000KM service in Feb which came to $240 with the next service now due at 80,000KMs which is a major service @ around $450 I believe.
Petrol consumption ranges anywhere from 6.3L / 100KMs on steady and flowing freeway driving to 12L of stop start traffic, hills and every day driving. We use ours on a variety of tasks including now towing since I installed a tow bar, long road trips, every day commuting and my wifes work and it still averages over the last 3 months less than 10L / 100KMs which gets us at least 500KMs out of the tank before we will up (not leaving it until it goes below 1/4 tank). We only use E10 fuel which we have used in all of our cars since it came out over a decade ago, for the main reason that it is cheaper and cleaner with a higher RON rating than that of the standard unleaded.
Overall a great car for a family, I would imagine a family with less than 4 kids easily being satisfied with the size, whereas we are probably going to upgrade to either a Pathfinder or something even bigger as the kids start getting bigger. If we didn't have 4 growing kids I would definitely consider getting a new one when we were looking to upgrade in a few years.
wonderful!!! – It took me 3 years to get my Husband to give up his old Ford Focus for the X trail. We paid extra to get the ST-L model. Worth every dollar. - We love the parking cameras. - The leather seats are so comfortable. - It also has a cooling cup holder and seat warmers. - Built in GPS with a touch screen. - Smartphone integration through… Read more

- Headlamps switch on automatically
- Mirrors can be folded in electronically when the car is parked on narrow streets
The X trail is a much bigger car but doesn't feel like you're driving a huge car. The back seats are a bit higher up (theater seating) so the kids can see heaps better out of the windows.
The X trail is very smooth to drive.
It takes a bit to get used to not having a handbrake but having the pedal handbrake. Also the push button start takes a bit to get used to. But over all we love the Nissan X trail.
Great on petrol. It doesn't guzzle the petrol at all. Costs about the same to fill up as a normal Family car.
For a small/ midsize SUV is has a big cabin. The only thing I don't like is that if you fold the back seats out (to make it a 7 seater), there's practically no boot space. Although that's the trade off for having 7 seats. They fold out so if you don't need them, you get your boot space. A very affordable SUV when comparing the price of the Nissan X trail against the other SUV's on the market.
A great car.

Great car but faulty aircon – Aircon stops everytime in an hour while driving. Not enough air diffuse in that time. So frustrated. Need to turn off the ac for 5 minutes and turn on again to get some cold air. Mine is a 2014 ST model. Car is great and spacious interior. Show details
Not bad but could be better – I have issues with Drivers seat , when I do 30 kms a hour it makes Clicking noise and a small play including accelerating and Breaking. I replaced Driver's seat Rails under warranty. Now comes back again also problem with temperature gauge showing 4 degrees higher constant hood vibrating and heater noise.. would i buy another if it had a major update Show details
Horrible Car, with residual issues and weak after sale services – The car came with rattle and odd vibration, back to the dealer but no proper action just got the car and returned it after couple of days, contacted with head office, inappropriate customer service, never recommend to buy a Nissan. Nissan scarified quality and removed some essential and standard items and replaced them by some features in the cabin and 360 cameras. Show details
Perfect 7 seater – This is by far the most value for money we have bought and we have changed cars couple of times. No nonsense car and will never fail you. Love it. Fuel economy is good and service is only once a year. Great boot space and great back seat legroom. The back seats in the 7 seater for kids only, dont expect grown up to sit there. Show details
At low revs it shakes – Buyer beware, do not purchase these cars, badly made, and worst company to deal with. Have had steering wheel vibrations the moment we purchased it. Our test run wasn't long enough. We started to notice a bad vibration coming from the steering wheel when travelling the car at low rpm, 40ks, 60ks, 80ks. Went to 2 Nissan dealers and they said… Read more
its the make up of the car. They didn't bother checking it, only offered a wheel balance that has done nothing. I will now take it to an independent mechanic for external advice.
Previously owned Kia, and Hyundai cars, and never had an issue with them.
My advice to anyone, if they are looking to drive one of these, drive it for a long time, and cruise with it at low Rpm, than make your judgement.
Love my Xtrail – I previously owned an X-trail and when looking for a new car, cam back to buy another X-trail! I love that it's spacious, has added features like front seat warmers and rear air conditioning vent, it's very economical to drive and was affordable compared to other similar cars. My only down point on this model is the back seats don't fold down flat (my previous model did) but that's because they can be moved forward ad back for extra leg room Show details
Terrific Car – Love my STL. It’s roomy, has a safe feeling about it. Economical on a trip. If I had one fault it is opening and closing the boot. Not really my Xtrails fault as I have quite bad hands. I would definitely recommend the Xtrail, sales and service at Von Bibra second to none. Best family car ever. Show details
All my friends get jealous how good it is – Though I didn't try the old x trail, the new one got me right the first day. The stl model 7 seats got me to all occasions from moving house, family get away, and tricky parking( thanks to the 360 camera),the car just got smooth acceleration when comparing to those hire cars I have driven, light steering. No doubt it is 2017 best suv of the world Show details

Waste of money, this is not a Japanese Quality – I bought one brand new from official dealer in Adelaide in June 2016. characteristic of nissan that means they know this car makes a lot of extra noise due to low quality material and factory quality control.
Rugged luxury (4WD model) – After a fair bit of research, I decided to get a 3 year old secondhand X-trail with about 60,000km on the clock. My favourite feature of the ST-L is the surround 360 degree camera. I upgraded from a small sedan to the X-trail so parking was my biggest hurdle. The camera had made me more confident in tight spaces. But it doesn’t seem to have… Read more
fantastic fuel efficiency as I use half a tank on about 250km (200km highway Brisbane to Toowoomba return) which is about 40L - double my small sedan would use for the same trip. It’s rugged enough for the soft off road through soft clay that I’ve gone through in it, but the modern design and leather interior add a bit of luxury. Absolutely love my new car.
Solid, easy driving family SUV – Faithful, reliable, enjoyable, comfortable, looks decent. Interior is a little bland and car is not engaging to drive due to the CVT however would happily purchase again as a family SUV. Around view monitor is life changingly good. No mechanical issues since purchase. probably would go the 4wd next time. Show details
Love my xtrail! – I had a Qashqai whe we had one child and upgraded to the larger xtrail when we were expecting baby 2. We got the 4WD xtrail as I wanted the extra stability and glad I did. The xtrail drives more like an SUV than the Qashqai, which feels like a sedan. The xtrail has longer and more flexible boot space, but it isn’t as wide. I now have to fold my… Read more
pram foot rest down where I didn’t in the Qashqai. Plenty of room in the back seat to keep to kiddies rear facing for longer, and the back seats move so I can make the boot bigger or the back seat leg room bigger. Lovely to drive and has plenty of “extra” features/options for your money compared to other makes of vehicle.
Good car except for problematic transmission – I have travelled 60 000ks in this vehicle and it is a comfortable drive. The cvt takes a while to get used to and is very smooth. Unfortunately it isnt particularly responsive at low speed and lacks zip when negotiating traffic. Mid range speed pick up i find to be ok. At 55000ks this developed a whine. replaced transmission under warranty. There is much information available on line regarding the questionable reliability of nissan cvts. There is obviously an ongoing unresolved issue with them. The nissan mechanic said to me "this isnt the usual noise they are brought back for". The motor revs pretty loudly when pushed but doesnt bother me.The car performs at its best when just cruising. Im averaging 7.5 lt per 100ks which is pretty good for a medium size SUV. The brakes are on the soft side which my mechanic remedied by removing some packers. The surround view camera is awesome and makes parking and reversing accurately really easy. There is plenty of room for back seat passengers. Has alot of really good features for the price but the vehicle is let down by underperforming, unreliable transmission. Wouldnt recommend.
Nice Family car – Has this car for almost 1.5 years now and the overall driving experience is great. It is a great car for family with young children. The engine is powerful enough for everyday driving around, handling is great and the fuel consumption is average.Plenty of space in the back to carry things around. Show details
Great family car – This is the first car I brought brand new and it was well worth it. I haven't had a single problem in 3 years, all services were reasonably priced and dealership was always nice. I would gladly buy another Nissan, unless they can make a big camry that is just as well built as the 2001 model. Show details
2017 xtrail – Prior to having our first bub in 2017 we wanted an suv. We were tossing up between the rav 4 or x-trail - new models. What made us go with the xtrail over the rav was the rear aircon vents and little extras including a digital speedo, leather seats, drink cooler vents and seat warmers. The xtrail was a tad cheaper than the rav and very happy with the car overall. Show details

Best car I’ve ever owned! – Out of all the cars I’ve ever had the xtrail has been the best!!! Fuel efficent, spacious, comfortable.. has lovely leather seats and seat warmers! The digital radio is amazing and having the 7 seater model has been great!!! The only thing I can say that could use some improvement is the cost the dealerships charge to service but I go to them over independent mechanics to ensure my warranty is in tact! Show details
Vibration Coming through drive line while accelerating and in idle – I bought my Nissan X-trail st-l t32 fwd brand new in 2016 December. From the day one, I felt this vibration coming through the drive train and while idling. Feels more when the a/c is on. When I took it for the 1000 km service I reported the matter in writing and was informed this will go away by the time I bring the car for the 10,000km service.… Read more
Now it has done 8700 km's the vibration is still there. Today I booked it for the service since it is approaching the one year service and informed the service department about my concerns and they straight away said it cannot be. Let's see the fun when the car goes to the service. This is a persistent problem with this model. No recall to fix the problem by Nissan. Buyers are cheated by not informing about this type of flaws.
STL-7 seater Mama with three boys – I bought this car not trying on my baby car seats as I needed three of them but turns out they can all fit ! boot space big enough to transfer baby cot and change table or single big and mattress. Which I have done btw. The front passenger seat does not fully go down but goes down enough. My only complaint is that it’s not as good with blocking out noise. Compared to my older car or hubbys car I can hear a lot of white noise when driving in my car and that’s something that has been mentioned in car reviews from experts. But it works fine for me as my kids need the white noise to sleep.
Best car for fuel efficiency and family – This is one of the best cars I have had since I got my licence. It is comfortable, it drives very smoothly even though it's a diesel, can't hear the diesel engine and also is the most fuel efficient car I have had. down side of my much loved X-Trail. And with petrol prices this high, that is a big factors. Lastly, a big disappointment with the manufactuer is that they sold me 2 year old maps! And they dont upgrade them on your yearly service. Not good! :(
XTrail - keeping my family on the move! – The new Nissan X-Trail has been a very welcome to my family - we went ST-L with all the options and the value for money is great! Nissan has a very strong attention to detail and are incredibly innovative when it comes to functions of the car. The road handling is amazing it drives just like a car, although for its size it can feel a little underpowered, but really only if towning something heavy. Great car! Show details
Very happy! – Purchased new in 2014 - It drives like a car rather than an SUV. CTV transmission is incredibly smooth. Cheap to run, quiet, good boot space and I like that Nissan have retained the X-Trail multi-positional shelf option in the boot - it allows better utilisaton of the space - espcially for those who still have kids in prams. The higher set rear seating is perfect for younger children who like to be able to take in the view. Show details
Disappointing compared to the 2011 ST-L – Cons: Not as good value as the previous gen (2011) XTrail. Much smaller boot space due to less boxy shape. Not the same seat split in the back. Pros: updated dash & technology. Economical when in ECO mode Reliable Better servicing - only once every 12 months rather than 6 monthly. Like the keyless entry Show details
