before but I am pleasantly surprised at it’s performance and fuel economy.Having owned a Nissan x trail for many years and this vehicle sharing all it’s mechanicals I have no doubts of it being a reliable car that I will keep for a long time.
The Front Brake rotors keep warping causing shuddering when braking. The rotors have been replaced 3 times under warranty, but I get max 15000km before it happens again. Renault don't have a solution and every time the car is has to be taken and left at the dealership twice to repair. No-one at Renault Australia Customer Service seems to care. servicing and ive done between 10 and 20000km per annum but the vehicle has a 30,000km service interval. At times i tow an Ifor HB211 with one horse (approx 1800kg total trailer+horse) for 400km and fuel consumption increases to around 12-15litres per 100 on the highway at 95kmh towing, the cruise control when towing annoyingly lags as speed decays and then uses excessive revs to try regain speed uphill, the speed limiter function with me controlling the revs worked much better for a peaceful ride but that IMO is a minor quirk rather than a big problem. I have done mild off road, the vehicle I have is 4x4 version and it seems to go reasonably well being a light vehicle getting up ruts and inclines, the clearance over rocks on flat ground is ok, not great compared to serious ladder frame 4x4 vehicles but the main issue is the aerodynamic nose overhang severely limits the approach angle so requires some thought and care to choose lines to avoid damage to front bumper. I am mostly touring on sealed roads not towing and this is where the vehicle shines, quiet and fuel efficient, comfortable, safe and good visibility. Handling on country Australian traditional potholes and corrugated gravel roads could do with some suspension tuning at the front - the springs being a bit soft its not a major drama or unsafe. Overall i have enjoyed owning this vehicle and will have it for another few years of happy motoring ahead.

When the Koleos is working it's very nice to drive and smooth on the road. It has good handling, reasonable fuel economy (especially in ECO mode) and has plenty of space in the cabin. Without the issues below I would most likely be very happy indeed. There is one major driving issue IMO though, the drivers side blindspot looking forward turning right (Australian roads). The side mirror is so big that it creates a blind spot, so when you are turning you can't see the lane and if there is a traffic island its very easy to hit it, even more so turning with multiple lanes and trying to stay centred as its hard to see the road.
The car interior is leather and nicely finished off with colour coded stitching and ambient light features right through the car that can be changed from the R-Link system (main screen). The colour and the brightness can be changed to set the mood for the cabin,. It has nice strips on the doors too that light up, a very nice touch. Front and rear AC and USB ports are a nice touch too.
The Navigation screen is great (when its working), and works in portrait mode using Android Auto with a small developer change, but does not work in portrait mode using Apple carPlay (which is a shame as there is this big screen and it can only display in landscape). I have reported this to Apple but don't hold your breath! The R-Link system is ok but again so many issues connecting the app to it and updating it etc... its nice but its clunky IMO. Its not always easy to find what you are looking for and it has this annoying habit of always defaulting back to digital radio which in my area does not work and pops in and out intermittently. There should be a feature to turn it off completely in the menu as I will never use it and its annoying! Small things but irritating!
The Koleos does have stop/start when you stop at traffic lights the engine switches off but thankfully this can be turned off by the dealer (this is why I changed from Mazda as they could not turn it off on request). This has to be one of the most annoying things ever, but thankfully it can be turned off!
The car has ok power, not amazing but ok. I am used to the Mazda and the Colorado Z71 that both had great accelerating power and the ability to speed up quickly. I really miss this in this car.
Now to the issues....
I brought the Koleos 14 months ago and since buying it I have had nothing but issues with the Active breaking and the large R-Link screen.
The Active Breaking did not work for over a year (right from two days after I brought it) and was replaced four times. The main screen in the unit still does not work, it comes on sometimes and other-times its just black for days at a time. The car has been back to the dealer at least a dozen times in the last year and they can't seem to fix the screen. The Active breaking seems to be working now after being replaced four times but after the fourth replacement it still came up three more times, but since then (October 15th) it has not came up as an error so not really sure if its fixed or not. What happens when the car is out of warranty?
The screen is the real issue though. It works some days and other days it does not. I brought this car as I wanted a large NAV screen as I use my car for work and as a photographer I go to many different locations and places. Sometimes it does not work for weeks at a time and the dealer can't seem to fix it. I even considered selling the car but I can not in good faith sell the car knowing there is a major issue.
Lately there have been a few other smaller issues, like the car would not lock, all doors and the boot closed but the car would not lock, the back electronic tailgate stops and would not restart. The tailgate had to be pushed closed manually and the aircon occasionally gets stuck on low and the car has to be stopped and restarted. With the issues with the R-Link system (large screen) I can't even do an update, it comes up with an error and says it has reverted back to the old version and the maps are way out of date and no updates from Renault and even if there was, good like trying to get the apps to work! (and I used to be a network Engineer) so I am very technical.
At just over 30'000ks the breaks have started to shudder down hill and the discs will most likely need to be machined and the pads replaced. On the Mazda at 90'000ks this was still not an issue. occasionally the gearbox revs really high and delays changing gears but this is a rare but it seems to be an issue that others have had.
So, in hind site would I buy this car again or another Renault? No. With all the issues I have had (and the dealers inability to fix them) and the considerations above and of course the very poor resale value of this car I think there are much better options on the road than this.A

I drive in ECO mode and have no trouble getting onto freeways - adequate power - and suburbs/freeway driving is giving me 7.3l/100kms. Only fault is that the tyre pressure indication stopped working yesterday(tyres are fine). Also being a 5 seater is what I want in an SUV ( I am retired.), so the Intens is a plus for me. Interestingly, a year ago when I bought the Honda CRV after testing Subaru, Mazda, Toyota and Nissan, I hadn`t given Renault a thought. Lucked out getting the updated 2021 Koleos and got a good deal too. A point about Renault - ,they don`t seem to do much of a sales job in Australia. I hope they don`t do a runner again!
Only 3 annoying things – Having had 2 previous Renault Scenics and the faults associated with them my mechanic said why would I return to a Renault. My answer was simple the Koleos is bigger has Nissan engine and running gear (XTrail) and it's made in South Korea and not Europe. fill. This will be my last new car before retirement and I have had it just on 2 years for 35000kms. Now just retired so far mechanically it hasn't let me down and am surprised by the amount of kick when asked from the 126kw engine provides. Nice and big inside and the heated seats are a welcomed addition. I service it every 10000ks and my mechanic was surprised how good this Renault was there's that Korean influence now on world cars ie: KIA/Hyundai. Now for the annoying faults. 1. Made for a left hand drive cars so they didn't bother to switch over the gear selector indicator on the consul so us right hand drive countries suffer as the gear stick hides it is also visible on the dash though but it makes it pointless on the consul.
2 . My left leg rubs up against the high consul and it does make it uncomfortable, doesn't help when your bow legged didn't notice in test drive only time you find the faults.
3. R-Link Map update, what up date ? Proudly announces roads change all the time, they're not wrong there but try getting one and it comes up latest Australian version to down load is Aug 2019 2 years ago in now past Aug 2021. Still waiting Renault.

Aston in my dreams... Then we both test drive the short list and then discuss. We have found that not always a higher KW rating transforms into better and more enjoyable drive. In our short list my first choice mentally was so disappointing to test drive even though it ticked all the boxes, i left deflated. We test drove both the Koleos petrol and Diesel Intens 4wd versions and we found the petrol with the CVT (constantly variable transmission) a poor match, the car seemed to constantly be looking for the right ratio and this equated to poor off the mark acceleration or as my dad would have said the car "dithered". The diesel version with its excellent torque it just went and to put this into prospective it is quicker off the mark than the Megane GT line 1.2 which is no slouch. Lets get rid of the skeleton in the cupboard CVT (constantly variable transmission) the transmission, these used to be called the rubber band transmissions and Nissan and Subaru both has issues and recalls from there early versions 2010-2016. The CVT fitted to the Koleos is the same as the Nissan XTRONIC CVT which has been fitted X trail for a few years with no reported major issues that i could find, in fact the unit is suitable up to 3.5 litre engines, so well within its current application. The Koleos does share the engine and power train set up with the current Nissan X-trail range. The Koleos uses the same R-Link 2 system as in the Megane and has a nice fluent feel and far better than the unit i had fitted to my 2017 Megane and now with Android Auto and Apples version, but keep in mind if you wish the traffic updates to be live you will need to purchase the option pack at $300 for 3 years and its well worth it. The Sat Nav is easy to use and i love to use the point of interest when searching. Seat are conformable and supportive for those who like to push the boundaries of the car, the car has very little body roll. The Koleos when pushed hard braking is great and the Diesel feels sporty without the noise , bit of over steer in sharp corners when pushed HARD, but easy to correct. The car is very economical on long distances and will do over 700 KMS to the full tank. Air-Conditioning is excellent also love the chilled seats (front only) and chilled drink holder on a hot day. Plenty of room in the rear for luggage and the one touch seat folding for the rear is so easy. The bose sound with 11 speakers only get better the louder you push it, also we use a 128gb USB to store all our favourite music, which works a treat. Things i don't like or would change i not not a huge list, auto fold mirrors when locking rather than having to push a button. I am not a huge fan of auto stop and start i always deactivate it, wish there was an off function in the R-Link menu . I think the ride high is a little low for major off roads adventures but with caution doable and i think the car would have greater presence with 35-50 high increase.
The Koleas has a lot of greats, its stylish on the outside and some great functions and cleaver styling on the inside, fun to drive and functional. You really have to look hard to find faults, buts it more down to a personal taste and what suits your needs, don't be fooled by the reported power (kws and torque) as it feel more powerful then unnamed vehicle at 155kw.
Update March 2020:- Had the car now for 4 months did my first trip away, filled the car up and drove 486kms with the cruse control set to 110 kms on ECO mode arrived home with over 1/2 a tank indicating 456km available in the tank. Drove some dirt road with corrugations, car handles great and not overly noisy in the cab.

Renault Koleos 2016 – This does not happen all the time sometimes goes several weeks before it happens. But after I stop waitng for traffic when I put my foot down to take off nothing happens appart from the fact it moves forward slowly . Endless Issues – Was so excited when we purchased this car. Beautiful and full of features. Unfortunately after 19 returns for warranty and over 7 months off the road we fell out of love and found ourselves in a world of hurt trying to get compensation from Renault. which are to many to mention, from dash to the rear, getting things fixed under warranty, good luck with that, the dealership want to, but Renault is not so excited about it, I got the brakes done at Midas, one quarter the price of Renault, the centre screen goes blank so many times that we cant be bothered with it anymore, its a joke, the Nexus tyres are woeful from new, the headlights are not bright enough, as for a two ton towing, LOL, it has enough trouble carrying its self around, plus the transmission would implode within a kilometre of travel, hope this helps someone who wants to buy one.

the mirror ( the LED diode), can only be seen under a particular angle and it is soo weak that you can only see it in a pitch dark with no street lights on, you can forget about using it during the day, the sad bit is that I can see them on a Kia's for an example hundreds of meters away from my car while driving - never got any response on this matter.
Reversing sensors are absolutely useless, I have crashed the car, twice, reversing as they only work on a smallest possible proximity (20-30cm), also they are very very slow to respond even when they work, for an example, when a car passes nearby, they "react" long after the car passes my vehicle.
It cost me thousands of dollars in insurance claims and in the long run, it costs me even more due to loss of the rating 1.
The car apparently has the front collision function, as it is driven by the sensors, I hate to think but am pretty certain it would fail to react, I tried to test it few times and never got any warnings.
Some people already reported the shaky engine, I need to put the car into Neutral every time at the traffic lights, alternatively, you must have the aircon running all the time. I should have mentioned that I only purchased the car due to the fact that is running the Nissan Engine /Drivetrain. I also rented Nissan X-trail that is using the same engine and gearbox and Nissan does not have any problems with shaking when in Drive mode and stationary.
Navigation is a joke, they update the software from time to time but it must have gone wrong a big-time somewhere, no one wants to fix the problem. I get a warning, not on all of the light, randomly, " Red light and speed camera ahead, reduce your speed" - this voice warning used to come only if I was driving over the speed limit. It now comes even when I drive 20km/h in a 60km/h zone, to make the matter more interesting it , the warning ( voice message) comes at least 5 times, extremely annoying, you cannot listen to the radio, kids are extremely annoyed.
Brakes - what a shocker - I was told that I need to replace my brakes, not just the pads but the discs as well and I have only done 25k, I drive like a granny having the kids with me all the time, do not brake instantly,99% of the driving is done on a flat roads, no hills etc.
Tyres seem to be OK but no European or even any Asia car manufacturer are using Nexen as standard tyres, that tells you they went really cheap there.
Otherwise, this could have been a really nice car, it is spacious, good on petrol, it looks nice as well.
Given the comments above, would I purchase Koleos again, if they continue doing what they are doing, most likely not.

12month/30k service intervals, as when I bought it I was covering a lot of km for work, thoguh this changed shortly after.
The dealership was excellent. I took a good long test drive and negotiated the deal the same day. It was the last day of the financial year so they were eager to sell. It was probably the best sales experience I have had in a car dealership actually.
The car itself is very good. It is no sports car to drive, and it doesn't exactly fly up a hill from a standstill, but it's easy to live with. Cruises at highway speeds nicely. Manoeuvrable enough in carparks etc. I think it looks nice inside and out. Fuel economy ok at 10l/100km, mainly short suburban trips with a few kms on the highway. Doesn't have carplay/android auto, and Renault's system is a bit rubbish. Bluetooth works better with my Google phone than my previous iPhone, which sometimes took a few attempts to connect. An update to this model now has proper smartphone integration. I have has it serviced at a local mechanic, and it's pretty cheap to do, being a Nissan underneath. No major service items have come up yet. Boot space is excellent and rear legroom is fantastic. Minor things: the doors don't have the solid feel that a previous vehicle (Skoda Yeti) had, and the foam between the windscreen and the dash comes out a bit, though it can just be pushed back in with a key.
So after 2.5 years and 45k, I'd recommend this car for someone looking for a practical, stylish vehicle at a reasonable price.

Nice car BUT expensive brake problems – Update 2/22 still have the car, after the initial brake problems, car has been trouble free, looks like the first cars has unsuitable brake components, current brakes are over 3 years old. Late 2016 model, done 42,ooo K and $2500 in brake costs, nothing covered under warranty, all easy driving around the inner city in Sydney, really not fit for purpose and does not meet what would be a reasonable expectation of running costs for new car.

k’s have had to have the front rotors and pads replaced.Only ever had to replace brake rotors on a car once before and that was after a shonky deal from a shonky dealer on a Holden Crappydore. I’m 71 and my wife 70 is the regular driver so it’s fair to say that our hooning days are well behind us. Never , ever, had to replace brakes at such low kilometres but the brake repairer said that they have thousands of dollars tied up in rotors and pads for European cars due to early brake wear out in European cars
Stay away – I bought a brand new Koleos in2017. It now has 40,000 kms and was told today at service that my brakes are 99% worn and I need new brakes and disks (costing $800). 2019 was not too fun, the car started jumping internally and the dashboard lights would flash randomly, with the indicators too. the card became no longer receptive until 2-10 minutes of inserting the key into the start slot different directions just to try and start the car. As well as resulting to jump starting the car :(. On a 37 degree day, the car just refused to flat out start, no sign of ignition lights even with jumpstarting. So I called the insurance company to come help out. One of their guys found no issue with the battery and found the key was the issue, so we got it towed to the nearest Renault car dealership and sought for service. 3 days later I was contacted by the Renault services and was informed something inside the car has flat out just destructed and are still looking to find out what it is. Long story short I have to get a new car.

sand and steep dirt inclines iv never been stuck in the sand in it including going onto sand islands, even pulled out a prado out of a bog down to the diffs which amazed me , the only issue I have is fuel consumption but mainly because of the larger offroad tyres I have put on it, I'm st average of around 9.2l per 100kms however even before on the stock tyres I still was at best of 8.5 city driving and 7.6 out on the highway , but that's the only thing I can pick on, the interior gives off a awsome luxery feel and is a absolute pleasure to drive day in and day out and honestly makes you want to drive it more and more, I havent came across any problems with the cvt as of yet iv done 30k kms on it so far and still working like it's new, the sound system is amazing and cant forget about the heated and ventilated seats absolute heaven especially on them hot days , no more back/bum sweating on leather seats! The cool breeze feels different but its rather relaxing , plenty of room in the car, a nice upgrade on the interior I reckon is if they put screens in the headrests of the driver and passenger seats for the kids entertainment on trips. Otherwise top car , if your seriously not sure go and test drive one you wont be disappointed

UPDATE>10,000K's, fuel usage dropped to 7.1L/100, still loving the car, use to the CVT now, honestly, I think the car is great. Goes great, feels great. No issues after 10,000K's, we have taken it on heaps of long drives all over NSW, love being in it. Those cup holders are still annoying. 18000k UPDATE> drivers seat creaky, had a slight shake in brake pedal when applied OVER 80KLMS. Took in for service, didn't fix the creak in seat,(this went away) brakes not sure yet. Won't be taking it back to parra motor group. So, bit of an update, just on my first service, 18,ooo service there is a shudder in the brake pedal and steering wheel. Obviously rotors and or pads. Apparently this is a common issue. They wont fix. Update, So after contacting fair trading nsw, and renault taking measurments, renault are now replacing the rotors! Anyone having issues with rotors with low klms id go to fair trading. Renault will just try to pass the buck.
Nice family SUV - Zen 4x2 – My first SUV, it has got a lot of features for affordable price. Renault's low finance offer has sweetened the deal. Never owned a French car, but very impressed by the Koleos. The Infotainment system and Android Auto are easy to use; a lot of space and legroom compared to others. Great overall look. complained a day after receiving the car.
After many months of complaints, taking my car in to be looked at; leaving it for days with Renault Australia and taking the matter formally,I was advised that this is actual "normal operation" and to reduce vibration I can drive with the air-conditioner on which actually lifts the engine speed to stop the car from vibrating/shaking. Obviously this is disappointing that a brand new car requires the air-conditioner on 24/7 to stop the car from shaking.To this day I am stuck with the issue, with no way to make the car stop doing it. To give you an indication of this vibration it makes my phone shake around in its holder, something you would expect from a 20 year old car, so its not pleasant to drive. I was advised by Renault that this is "normal operation" so one can expect that all the Koleos cars operate in a similar manner if this is normal.
I loved the car and if it wasn't for this issue I would recommend it to everyone, but in my opinion it would be the last vehicle I would ever buy again.
Other issues experienced with the car:
1. breaks making funny noises every time they are pressed
2. vibration at 80kms an hour through the steering wheel
3. faulty media unit, which was replaced, now this one has other issues and dead pixels.
4. rattles in the cabin and front passenger seat

had to really try, I would say the low idle can feel a little bit un-refined when stationary and the AC isn't running. With that being said, I feel it has lessened over the last couple of months. At the end of the day I would rather this, than an engine with start-stop fitted.
The standard sound system is beautiful, I use the heated seats way more than I thought I would and the climate system is very responsive to changes in temperature and sunlight. Apple car play is a game changer, we use it every single day!
The active safety features are well implemented. I have had the forward emergency braking kick in once and it only did it to support me (wasn't stopping hard enough) and only when you need it to. The rest of the time, they are just in the background, standing guard.
Rear leg room and cargo space was important and doesn't disappoint. No dramas with space when we have multiple passengers.
Fuel economy is fantastic, currently averaging 8.2L per 100/km, most of our driving is done at 60-80km/h and at the time of this review we have done 9100km.

UPDATE: So we have now done 14,000km and our fuel consumption has improved further, hovering between 7.2 and 7.4 L/100km. Very happy!
Love the car - Koleos Life MY18 – A very good stylish looking car, Good value for money, handles well. Build is far better than Honda CRVs. Interior feels much nicer for $32,000 mid size SUV, nice features. 10.5L/100km. A/c works well with dual climate control which i feel is a std. for this range. Very reliable – Previous car was a Tiguan with all the bells and whistles. Looked at the Renault Koleos and it had many of the same safety features and gadgets but more. Cost was a lot less than a new Tiguan and cannot fault it. Running costs are good, smooth on the road, stylish and safe. Good family SUV with a lot of class. Show details
Still drives like new even after using to travel to and from work across rough gravel and black soil roads.

Very happy with my Koleos apart from the occasional fault with loss of power seems to be when turning left when putting foot down on accerater pedal
