Rinnai Avenger Avenger AV25N (Natural Gas, White) Questions & Answers
VerifiedMPN: AV25N3We have 2 heaters both are omitting a very bad smell. I have turned them off and on a number of times and it is still the same. The gas on the stove top is not smelling at all. I was shafted when I rang technical yesterday, the guy was really rude and didn't want to know about it. So please help. We are cold.
Thank you for the question Mardi B, we would recommend booking a service call. Please refer to our website with the following link external link or phone 1300 555 545.

Hi my Rinnai gas heater seems to have lost its strength it’s 3 years old it worked well last year and the year before, this year it seems to be weak, can a gas heater work but not give out sufficient heat? There is no dust as I’ve had it covered for the summer.

My heater permits a strong odour once turned on. It has been used for the past 2 winters. At the end of last winter the filter was cleaned and then the heater was stored away from dust etc. I am concerned about smell.
HI Barbara,
Thanks for your question. We would recommend contacting our Technical team on 1300 555 545 to assist further.
Thanks Rinnai Australia
A strong odour tends to indicate incomplete combustion or poor quality gas (sulphur compounds are smelly). But, I see that the Rinnai people have reached out, best to keep in touch with them.
Hi Barbara,
If you would like to send us a direct message with your contact details, we will have one of our technical team contact you.
Thanks Rinnai Australia
Thanks Barbara,
We have passed on your details to the technical team and they will be in contact shortly. We would recommend deleting your phone number from the post above.
Thanks Rinnai Australia
Thanks
My Rinnai Avenger 25 woke us up this morning. Loud bang, and huge black smoke. It was NOT turned on, had NOT been turned on for the last 6 months!!! How could that happen? Luckily the smoke alarm got us up
Hi Peter T,
We have sent you a private message to obtain your contact details, alternatively you can contact us at external link
Thanks Rinnai Australia
Dear Peter T, Thank you for allowing us to attend and assess your Avenger 25 and its installation. Our site visit and assessment confirmed the appliance is in safe working order, as per our strict working specifications. The cause of the black smoke was from a deteriorated add-on extension lead socket, which continues to be live, even when the appliance is off, unless the wall socket is switched off.
We have re-tested the appliance and have replaced the power cord and hose as a matter of course for your assurance, where you can continue to run the appliance safely and reliably.
Thanks
Rinnai Australia
Hi. I have this heater for two years. But recently, when it's lit, there is a bad smell of smoke. And its light and red light is red. Any ideas?
I am hoping the Rinnai rep picks up on this and asks you for more detailed info. I do not like to give out guidance when their could be a serious/dangerous fault involved. The red LED might be its normal operating light that goes from green to red when it is fully running. The smoke smell is the one that concerns me most. Sometimes you might get a slight hint of a smell that usually indicates lack of ventilation as it is an unflued heater. If its more a burn/electrical smell then it might time to get a pro to physically take a look.
What is the difference between a Rinnai 25 Avenger TR and the Rinnai Avenger Plus?
Thanks for the question Al S, the Avenger 25 Plus has an added electrical element which adds another 2kw of power to the unit, great for a quick heating boost. The plus also offers thermostatic temperature control so you can set the temperature and the unit will turn off when the temperature is reached. For more information on the heater to best suit your need please check our website or our customer care centre.
Sorry for the delayed reply as I do not check my email as often as I should. I was also hoping Rinnai would step up and they did. One thing I did notice is their site covers mostly their top models which makes sense. I believe the Avenger plus is their top of the line for "portables" and the recommended heating area is on their site. For other later models not covered on the Rinnai site, try sites such as Bing Lee and Goodguys as they are still listing some specs for the smaller Avengers and other Rinnai heaters. I could be mistaken but I do believe the regular Avengers has an electronic thermostatic control as well.
Hi, I have had my gas heater for 3 years, bought it brand new. A couple months ago I had the unit serviced. Since then, everytime the heater is turned off after use, a strong gas smell is noticed for approx a minute after. Before it was serviced, I never smelt this gas smell after using it. Curious to know if this is a common thing and whether I should worry about it being dangerous to my family?
Hi i noticed some sort of smell(kerosean) coming out of the heater.
What could be wrong and how would i fix it?
Thanks for the question Abs, we would recommend speaking to our technical help desk on 1300 555 545 and they can run through some troubleshooting with you to resolve the issue.
My rinnai avenger 25 stopped working an wont turn on. Any ideas?
Thanks for the question Bron. Has the heater displayed an error code? This will give us a better idea of what may be wrong. Alternatively you can call our technical help desk on 1300 555 545 and they can troubleshoot with you.
Hi, what is difference between these 2 models natural gas heater---rinnai avenger 25 and rinnai avenger 25 plus? Also how much area can they both cover. Need to understand which one will be good for me. Thanks
Thanks for the question Abhi, the main difference between the 2 heaters is the Avenger 25 plus has an electric element which can boost the heating output for the heater and it is also thermostatically controlled. Coverage will depend on a number of factors and we would recommend using our heater selector on the Rinnai Australia website which will calculate the best heater for your use.
Hi i recently had my rinnai avenger 25 changed to lpg it worked fine for a few weeks now every now and a gain when it is going i smell gas very strong coming out of the heater have had to turn it off it gets that strong do u know if the conversion would have any think to do with this please?
Same problem, but I had mine converted to Natural Gas, the smell is really bad on low heat, it's like the gas hasn't burnt. Goes away when I put it on high. Getting it serviced next.
Hi Beverley, This may be an environment smell. We would recommend a service to ensure the heater is working efficiently and to specification. Please contact 1st Care Service on 1300 555 545 for further assistance or alternatively you may book online following the link provided - external link
Thanks, Rinnai Australia.
Hi
My heater reads 2-3 C above the acryall room temp. Is there a fix? Replacement thermostat or maybe increasing wire then to thermostat bulb?
I just purchased the Rinnai Avenger 25. We jave 2 Gas Bottles outside the home. I jave a large living area leading to the front entryway and main bedroom. We had the heater on tonight for an hour, we got headaches and when we came from the outer rooms we noticed a smell. Not rotten like gas but... like the smell of a lighter perhaps? We opened the doors and windows and it cleared. This is the first heater use and first time using gas bottles (fitted outside of home). Is this a new heater smell? The heater is well ventilated from wall and sides as suggested in manual.
Hi Jlo76. Did you purchase a natural gas heater, when actually you have LPG? Heaters are different for natural gas and LPG, they can also be converted by a professional.
Hi Kez
I bought from Bing Lee locally who said they sell a lot here in Armidale - no gas line all bottles. I could ask them again.
Yeah it seems your model number is for a natural gas heater, you definitely need an LPG one, apparently you can get conversion kits too. But considering it’s new I’d take it back. Good luck with it!
Thanks Kez i believe you are right. There was a smell lingering this morning too. I will contact them first thing!
Thanks Kez i believe you are right. There was a smell lingering this morning too. I will contact them first thing!
It is an LPG heater, calling real estate to work out who pays for the plumber/gas fitter! Thanks again Kez
Thanks for the question JLo, we would recommend talking to our online technicians regarding the smell you noticing with the unit as it can be a number of things. As well as having the heater well ventilated there must be ventilated from outside of the room. Our technicians can help you to confirm if this is a heater error that requires a service agent and can be reached on 1300 555 545 option 3 for technical.
I have moved from NSW to SA with an Avenger 25 (converted to LPG). I have now discovered that in SA portable gas heaters putting out more than 18MJ must be flued. Any such thing as a flue kit?
Hi, we have the avenger 25 natural gas model and have recently moved to a new house which runs on LPG gas cylinders. Do we need to do anything to the heater? It connects as normal to the new house gas points? many thanks,
Lisa
Yes, the heater must have the LPG kit fitted (by a professional service agent).
Thanks for the question Lisa, the previous poster is correct, the heater will require conversion to be able to use it on LPG. The kit can be ordered at any Rinnai stockist.
Takes to long to heat room it use to speed up when on high and heat house quick and cycle off now it justs runs non stop. Any ideas?
Thanks for the question JRG, if the heater hasn't been serviced in the last 2 years we would recommend this as a first step, as there might be a build up of dust and debris affeting the running of the unit.
I have heard that unflued gas heaters produce carbon monoxide and etc gas. Has anyone noticed any issue with air or breathing problems? No one in our home has asthma or any allergy just so you know before answering my question.
Natural combustion produces gases. In particular carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide that can affect your health. Other household sources are an open fire and gas cooking. Just make sure you have fresh air coming in to the room and don't use it in a bedroom or a small room with the door shut. It also produces moisture so if you have a condensation issue, an unflued gas heater may make it worse. The answer is ventilation.
Its true, but I have not noticed anything yet. I have been using it for 1 month and I run it on Auto mode at Night and Early Morning. It is required to put it in the living room or open spaced areas and keep some ventilation as per their guidelines. so that Fresh Oxygyn is getting replaced by any gas its producing and as per australian standard it should be ok to use with its producing very minimal Carbon Monoxide to cause breathing issues.
After ignition heater starts as normal. Then makes a continuous ticking noise after about 30 seconds. Any idea what this may be?
Does it also make a similar noise when you turn it off, while the fan is blowing cold? If so, it could simply be the sound of heat expansion of the internals of the heater - perfectly ok in this case.
Thanks for the question Steve, it is normal for their to be expansion noises when the heater is first switched on (and similar contraction noises when switched off). If the noise fails to stop after this time a service call may be required.
We have a Rinnai Avenger 25. It "ticks" to start but will not ignite and these is a strong gas smell. There are no error code displayed so we do not know what is wrong with it?
Strongly suggests to me that it has a fault in the ignition system, I'd switch it off immediately, * stop using it * and get it repaired - if it is still under warranty, return it to the store for repair.
Oh and don't forget that, just because their warranty document might say other parts are only covered for one year, your legal rights MAY mean that you still entitled to a repair even if you've owned it for longer - do some research and check your consumer rights.
Definitely sounds the igniter isn't working.
Thanks for the question Mickeydeanq. It does sound like there is an issue with the ignition for the heater. We would recommend a service call to diagnose and repair the heater. The Avenger heater has a 5 year parts and labour warranty and a service job can be booked through our 1st Care Department on 1300 555 565 option 2 for service.
