On 4 December 2022, SGIO made the transition to become NRMA Insurance in Western Australia.
Terrible! – What a horrible experience! My Mazda was rear-ended while parked and I was fortunate enough to get other drivers details, photos and full admission of other driver on a video. SGIO, or NRMA initially sent a communication saying no excess payable. Four weeks later I get a text saying I am up for $800 excess. Many phone calls on my end, call centre… Read more
operators saying they would call me back and never did and I could go on... Unnecessarily stressed me out and can't wait to switch insurers. RAC from now on. Lift your game!
20 years of paying insurance premium now very difficult to make a claim – I’ve been a customer for over two decades and never made a claim. My car was stolen in April and I’ve been trying to make a claim since. After multiple calls and extremely long wait (each time always over an hour) I managed to lodge a claim. However I am told that I need an online account in order to complete the claim. I tried to register for an… Read more
online account but I cannot get an online account because my contact information today does not match what I used to register the account twenty years ago. I am in my late sixties and I cannot remember what information I used to register over twenty years ago. Why can’t SGIO ask me for other information to verify my account? Drivers license? Passport copy? I am getting emails back and forth from different customer service people asking the same thing, all I need is just to be able to complete my claim!

Absolutely the worst since NRMA took over – Since NRMA has taken over in WA i have had to wait on hold for hours just to have them hang up. Can never talk to a claims person. Before NRMA, SGIO were great and been with them over twenty years but just recently cancelled 4 policies with them and looking fo another insurer Show details

Avoid – Read your PDS Carefully. $30 Cancellation fee if you decided to cancel early. I was sent my renewal notice and they increased the premium quite significantly so I switched to another insurer under the assumption I would just be credited the remaining balance (Lesson learned always read the PDS). SGIO is more than pleasant when taking your money or… Read more
increasing your premium after moving but when you want to cancel a policy it is a completely different attitude. I was told 'so..... you want the 49 cents remaining for the final month of cover'. I said 'surely it would be more than 49 cents given there is a month left on the policy'. In which she responds abruptly ' There is a $30 cancellation fee, it's stated in your PDS, then condescendingly repeated another 2 times 'so you want the 49 cents' as if I was some sort of pathetic scavenger. I will gladly take the 49 cents 'KAREN' since you are so happy to slug me a $30 fee for switching insurers after you jack up my premium. It's funny the market value of the car decreases a few thousand dollars yet the premium to insure the car skyrockets 'go figure'. Also to be fair PDS Documents are rather lengthy, I feel in the best interests of the customer something such as a cancellation fee should be highlighted not put right at the back of the PDS in the fine print.

Changed to NRMA – SGIO have now been absorbed into NRMA, however I believe NRMA are recognising long term SGIO customer loyalty with their premium reductions. So far under NRMA one of my cars renewals, like for like, was cheaper elsewhere and my second car was priced better at NRMA. So the car brand, age, colour etc places a big part on premium costs. continue to avoid a "LAZY TAX" by shopping the market to get the best overall deal.
I have been insured with SGIO for over 42 years. Currently I have four cars and home and contents package insured.
I am very focussed on price and benefits when insuring and ALWAYS check several Insurers for competitiveness and because I am getting a competitive price I have renewed my policies with SGIO.
In the 42 years of cover I have made two claims, a car windscreen claim and a fence replacement.
Neither of the claims were difficult to process and their payouts were quick and no fuss.
Finally, all my cars are listed as travelling no more than 5000 kms per annum, which is more than they actually travel.
Nevertheless I am loyal to a point with SGIO...and let's hope they continue their loyalty for the duration.
Excellent claims service, reasonable premium and love the optional zero excess – I've had comprehensive car insurance with SGIO for 7 years now, since buying my current Mazda 3. One of the reasons I stay with SGIO is because they are one of only two companies I've found in WA who offer a zero excess policy at a reasonable premium price. I always go for this option because the chances of someone else damaging your car are quite… Read more · 1
high, even if it's minor damage. All the cars you see driving around with small dings, scratches and scrapes are those with insurance policies with a reasonably high excess. In a lot of cases, it's simply not financially worthwhile to make a claim and pay the excess, so the car just accumulates damage - not a good look.
In early June, someone reversed (presumably) into the rear riding light of my car, breaking the plastic. I always get minor damage fixed because I prefer to maintain the car is as new condition and thus retain the its value. A quick call to SGIO on a Sunday and everything was sorted. The customer service person (in the Philippines) was incredibly helpful and ran through the whole claim process with me, taking details of the damage and confirming that I'd have nothing to pay. We agreed on a repair company close to my home as I expected to be using a bus to get home after dropping the car off, but no - I was told that SGIO provide a $50 cab voucher from the repairer to my home and then again when I needed to collect the car. That was entirely unexpected and a real bonus of the policy! As it so happened, once the tail light came in, I was able to wait for the broken light to be replaced, so the cab vouchers weren't necessary, but good to know if more serious damage occurs in the future.
The repairer was in touch by SMS the following day to confirm the date and time of assessment. The day after that, I received a call from them to say that the part had come in and they booked me in the next day to have the damaged light replaced while I waited. That was it! SGIO had organised everything, so I just drove away with a new tail light four days after lodging my claim. No problems whatsoever.
This was the third time I've had a repair done under my SGIO car insurance policy and each time it's been totally hassle-free and my no-claim bonus has never been impacted. Yes, my policy does tend to creep up a little each year and I always shop around before renewing it, but have not yet found a better premium price, so stick with SGIO. I tend to tailor my car's insured value each year to keep the premium as low as possible without impacting the insured value too much. I was with WesternQBE/QBE for 14 years prior to SGIO, but they increased the premium dramatically when I bought my current car in 2014, so I switched to SGIO - best thing I could have done!

Easy as – I highly recommend SGIO car insurance, was with NRMA in Sydney 2010 changed to SGIO when I came to Perth. The process of making a not a fault claim was smooth and faultless. So efficient. Had taxi take me to hire care and back and was updated along the way. they choose great Panel beaters too. Thanks SGIO highly recommend. Show details · 1
Excellent coverage at a reasonable cost – I have had comprehensive insurance for two vehicles through SGIO for several years and although I haven't had to make a claim I have found them to be very helpful supplying information on changes of vehicles, advice on the different policies and an honest assessment of what, and what is not, included in the policy. Their prices are unbeatable,… Read more · 1
and if everybody does the right thing by not claiming for trivial mishaps we can expect a good policy for a reasonable price.
Excellent customer service – I called to renew my policy today, I spoke to Thorn who was friendly, had great product knowledge and was very understanding regarding my circumstances. Thorn was patient and kind, Thorn also has a fantastic phone manner. Please thank Thorn for his exceptional work ethic. Show details · 1

SGIO refuse to pay for work carried out by our company – I own a windscreen replacement company, we carried a windscreen replacement for an SGIO customer. They now are refusing to pay for the work carried out because we are not their preferred supplier. Customers have every right to use who they want to carry out the work. After 24 phone calls and numerous emails SGIO still refuse to pay. They are in… Read more

Terrible service, nonexistent communication – Worst customer service I have ever experienced. They took nearly 6 months to fix my car without contacting me. I had to contact them and then received incorrect information. I raised two complain and received no meaningful feedback. Don’t waste your time or money!! – Worst experience I’ve had to date. Lodged a claim for an accident in May, they sent an email to the other party that was simply a template saying that it was my fault, then not my fault, then both at equal faults and then that my car involved in the crash was stolen. What a joke, can’t even proof read an email before copy, paste and send looks… Read more
incredibly bad for your customer saying the car was stolen. Didn’t hear anything until November where I get a call saying I’m at fault without even taking into consideration the picture evidence provided and simply going off the fact the other driver had a witness taking their side. I was undercut from the left and customer support said that it’s legal for two cars to drive side by side in a single lane simply because there is room for the two of them WHAT A JOKE. Being a 35 year member and SGIO just want to roll on their back instead of doing what they are paid to do! This was dragged into Feb of the next year, when trying to call them I was hung up on 3 TIMES! because it was “windy” I live in a semi-rural area what would you like me to do about it when you get no reception inside? no wonder this company is on its way out. Switching to RAC asap.

Absolutely Useless! – Our car was broken into, side window smashed and approx. $600.00 of items inside stolen (sunglasses/jacket). After 3 hours of phone calls I was sent to a garage that refused to do anything. SGIO were not then able to offer any other suggestions. I booked it in myself and the glass was fixed for slightly less than the excess. After months waiting… Read more
for confirmation of the claim they explained that as the damage was less than the excess there would be no coverage for the items stolen either. What is the point in paying for the insurance then? There incompetence cost me way more in time out of the work than the damage and items stolen anyway. Waste of time and money and will need to find an alternative, can't do worse than this.

Stay Away Seriously – Horrible customer service. Horrible attitude. Can’t speak proper English. Leaves you on hold for 2 hours. Refuses to provide a courtesy car of equal value. They gave me a small hatchback instead. Took over 5 months to process the claim. Calls in the most inconvenient time. Never ever use this insurance. Switched to Suncorp and AAMI, in two minutes had a customer representative. Never use SGIO it's horrible!! Show details

going up roughly up around $80 every year despite not a single claim on any policy in 6 years, and the value of vehicles depreciating each year and the loyalty bonus of having 4 policies with them does nothing to even stabilise the price let alone reduce it..
Been lucky enough not to have to claim in 6 years, but on calls staff are amazing and little wait times and very friendly, and being from WA was happy to support a WA company, but when they ripping off their unsuspecting loyal customer base, its really not a good business model, and once they're gone, they're gone, short sightedness to make a quick buck now & in the future theyll struggle.
Other problem was when I asked about an over 40s policy and that maybe thats why other insurers are offering a much better price they said that doesent exist with them, the question is why not, or should a safer demographic just pay more even though there is zero chance any riskier younger groups will ever drive their car.. why would anyone want to insure themselves against non existent risks, hmmm anyway

Won’t talk to the other party insurance for extra hire car duration – Put in a claim to SGIO in an accident that the other party has admitted fault. SGIO provided 14 days of hire car as per my policy which is fine. But car is taking longer than 14 days to be repaired. around, a man named Errol from the recovery team advised that this doesn’t happen and I need to pay for it first as the other party insurance might not cover it. Advised him that other accidents that I have not been at fault has always provided me with a hire car until my vehicle is fixed. He’s response was (well I’m not talking about your other claim, I’m talking about the claim now). I said why can’t you guys talk to the other party insurance to see if they will pay as the other party was at fault. Was advised he wouldn’t as they might say no. Errols attitude was anything but abrupt unfortunately I rang up another place that does hire cars for drivers not at fault. They said they will handle it and have already booked me a hire car with no expense from out of pocket after speaking to the other party insurance. Why won’t SGIO communicate with the other party insurance?

Ever rising premiums - get insurance elsewhere – When Comprehensive cover became ridiculously expensive, I moved to Third Party Fire & Theft. The following year my insurance premium increased by 25%. I asked for an explanation, and got fobbed off with general statements about factors such as cost of repairs, availability of parts - which are not even relevant for 3rd Party Fire and Theft.
