days when an open fire is just not a smart/responsible option (which is becoming all too frequent in recent years). My mate usually backs us up with his branded portable BBQ but personally I feel they are over-rated and take up far too much space in the back of the vehicle. Then I stumbled across the STOV Portable BBQ. It fit the bill for a compact portable BBQ (literally packs to the size of a laptop) and uses the same gas canisters as all my other kit. And most importantly it was an Aussie based design and small business which I will always support when I can. So after 3 months of looking at other options I immediately recognised the potential of the STOV BBQ and ordered one. I arrived home last Friday to find the parcel waiting for me. The packaging consisted of all fully recyclable materials so more than just the usual lip-service to the environment. Compact is an understatement and the fabrication & fit up was perfect, everything slots in with ease but without excessive free-play. Construct was very straight forward/logical and easy to put together in a minute. Having removed the top grill plate I proceeded to light the burner using my Ferro Rod (my go-to for fire lighting after using a bow drill in a survival course years ago). The BBQ came up to heat in no time and I spent the next 20min seasoning the grill plate. So much thought has been put into this piece of kit even the bag folds out as a base for the BBQ (everything has a purpose/no waste). Three weeks later and I had opportunity to light the STOV up for a lunchtime steak cook-up in the Perth hills. I was blown away by the power/heat this thing puts out. A large Scotch Fillet which would normally take a significant amount of time on a Weber Q was cooked within 7-10min (cool, windy and raining- I put the wind shield to good use). It literally took 1 min to set up (second time only and without the instructions...its not rocket science). And the Scotch Fillet...perfectly medium rare. I expected some adhesion to the hot plate however experienced none though I had seasoned the hot plate when I first lit it up at couple of weeks ago. I have bought a small flat pan from IKEA should I need it in future for eg. tomatoes, onions or any such item that is not good on a slotted grill plate. One thing a lot of years in the bush/field has taught me is good kit needs to be simple, solid and field-repairable so it won’t let you down when you need it to perform; and it’s that reliability factor you are investing in. There is not much that can go wrong with this and given the STOV team has already reached out to me twice to see how its going since purchasing the BBQ I imagine they would be quick to respond/assist should there be an issue…the benefit of supporting an Australian business. In terms of cons…one thing I would suggest is to add a Velcro flap at each end of the gas tube and hose slots on the bag. I can see these falling out if the bag/velcro is not sealed correctly during pack up. In addition a YKK zipper all the way around might be better than Velcro. Perhaps offering the bags as a replaceable item would be handy as I can see they will cop some wear ‘n tear. Having cooked on it now, two additional areas for improvement would be a swivel connector to the burner tube and; I can see there will be demand for a bigger version as it becomes more popular. To the STOV team and designer/s: outstanding job, great bit of kit, you should all be proud and I look forward to see how your business grows and progresses. Without doubt this is a great bit of kit with so much potential in the field. I was particularly impressed with the wind shield which I bought at the same time as the BBQ. I have also now purchased the heat bead tray because I’d love to give that a go in winter. This piece of kit is outstanding! 5 stars Iain

This BBQ is the best. I do a lot of road trips, camping, fishing and more and never loved cooking on a butane cooker and hate cooking on a jetboil unless it's freeze dried. This thing has been amazing. steaks, kingfish, burgers - It heats up quick, it sits low so it has natural wind protection and it cooks steak like a bbq. Amazing little BBQ, wondering if it's big enough? We fed a group of hungry four wheel drivers in Australia Day down in the Vic High Country and the STOV BBQ absolutely smashed it. Stores away in our 4wd drawer as a permanent bit of our kit, runs off the same canister as our jet boil. We wont leave home without it. Show details

Game Changer – For me. A regular road tripper with my dog & pushed for room in my 4x4 due to dogs size (105kg) This Stov is brilliant. I go to outback places & sit in the desert etc & enjoy Australia. This is a game changer. Thanks Freddie I also own a small business so happy to help.

take it everywhere for picnics with us and use it on the balcony as well. So far it grilled to perfection: eye fillets, scotch fillets, chorizos, sardines, salmon fillets, barramundi fillets, toasts, burgers, chicken thighs, veggies etc. I wouldn't grill large pieces of meat or whole fish on it, due to the BBQ/grill plate size and amount of heat it generates. It generates sufficient amount of heat for its size though. Stov works best when the ingredients are not too large, like sardines, portion size fish fillets, eye fillet, chicken thigh fillets, lamb straps or veggies cut to smaller bits. CLEANING: Cleaning is very easy. I usually wait till the BBQ cools down (it cools down very quick) and then back it in plastic bag, then place it inside the case that it comes with. At home place most of the components in the dishwasher and the grilling plate wash by hand since it has wooden handle (probably the only thing I would change is to make plastic handles for this reason). It is not a problem though because it takes me 30 seconds to clean the grill plate by hand in the sink. GRILLING IN THE WIND: One of the new accessories is a wind shield which I got separately that prevents the grill plate and grilled food from cooling down while in operation.
