Telstra Smart Modem Gen 3

Intermittent stops working. Is affecting work from home. Drop outs are daily. Resetting the modem every day is not aceptable. Calling their helpdesk is useless they just, suggest changing the channel. Changing channel works for a few hours then drops again. Same problem occurs 24 hours later. Show details
Bought 2 of them and bought of them develop the same issue of hanging after being up for a few days...Piece of junk from Telstra. Had to go back to my previous Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2.
I updated teh gen 2modem to gen3 smart modem from Telstra. I had 3 Telstra gen 3 boosters from before. Now I frequently get dropouts, slow speeds, no netwrok in some rooms. I learnt that this device can support maximum 12 devices at once but I feel the actual number is quite less than 12. I think after 5-6 devices the modem shakes to connect… Read more
additional devices. I asked for refund, got promises but no action. I spent hours and days and months on their chats, phonecalls and NBN visits (this never happened, they cancelled twice). Finally, I have given up now and I will buy an independent modem/ router. All my time, money has gone waste. There are frequent Telstra outages too and they wont reimburse in the bills for the time of service they are not providing.

GEN 3 NOT SO SMART MODEM REFURBISHED JUNK – They are bad news refurbished junk we had 4 replacements and Telstra insist on replacing them when i went to a Telstra store the manager claims over 400 per day are returned, they factory reset them re sticker them and send them to new and existing customers don't waste your time using them just go to JB Hifi or a electronics store and buy a new… Read more
one like Netgear or tp link with WAN/Cable capability these gen 3s are JUNK and Dont believe the Telstra messaging service I am gold customer they still treat you stupid and empty promises
Doesn’t work well with Wifi booster – Modem hasn’t been reliable and occasionally needs a reboot. After 8 months the power on the modem stopped working and needed to be replaced. Show details

No issues here – Works fine for me. Don’t know what the fuss is all about. Have multiple devices connected including Ethernet connections for two TVs (4K), PlayStation, CCTV, Yamaha amp, and to PC in my office. WIFI about 12 devices including three TVs, laptops, phones etc. NBN (FTTP) has dropped out a couple of times but not modems fault. Also love having the… Read more
diagnostics and analysis page on pc when you log into mymodem.modem/ you can see all operations within the modem. Fingers crossed I don’t start having all the issues as other people. Easy to set up, looks nice and neat and resets ok with minimal stat up delay. IP: Superloop @ 250mbps. But will be upgrading to 1gbps for $99 per month.
The best modem for NBN – I am extremely happy with this because it has a battery backup in them so I won't have to worry about any more outages, which means I can keep using the internet as normal. Show details
Great modem and mesh, don’t trust these reviews – No clue why soo many people are complaining. I’ve had mine since it was released and it works a charm. Same set up would cost over a thousand dollars and I got this one for 200 bucks. Speeds are around 700-800mbps and mesh is really good for gaming in another room. Don’t trust these reviews. People may have got bad units but majority of them are fine and work better than if you brought a after market brand for more 3-4 times the amount Show details
Negative reviews
My modem has been working intermittently for a while now, calling Telstra to advise was fruitless. They will do nothing till it actually dies/stops working. Well that just happened so new one ordered but means no tv, no working from home etc etc till it arrives. Poor service from a modem that is not 12mths old yet. Show details
Well I dont believe it after 15 months I think my Modem has failed. It was intermittent for a while as movies would stop streaming or Kayo would stop and you would have to go to the begining of the show. The Telstra Tech said he was going to send a Tech out. He didnt arrive when scheduled. I contacted them and then they said they cancelled the… Read more
job without telling me. They then made me do further testing like plugging my laptop in to the nbn box to see if I can get the internet. I just wander how a real laymen would deal with this! Not sure if you can access the internet by plugging your PC into the NBN box? Anyway I now have a blue light on Modem with a slow intrernet. Waiting for a new box to be sent out.
Absolute junk and throw in the 3 boosters I was told to purchase as that was the issue. Sick of ringing Mumbai and given the run around by 4 different people, no one k is what to do besides name, address DOB, pictures back and front of lights and reset to default. After that, they are absolutely hopeless. Worse than hopeless as they give you… Read more
this crap about how they will stay until issue resolved. Utter crap. Telstra. Crap company, crap products, crap support. Privatisation by the Howard government. Thanks for nothing you horrible little man.

There has been a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 3 in my house for around two years, and during Cyclone Alfred it died (although it was nothing to do with the cyclone). It died slowly with some intermittent failures followed by final death when all lights went out. The power pack seems to be working because I tested it with a multimeter. I suspect it is a… Read more
chronic disease inside the box. Given the volume of comments about the terrible performance of these modems, Telstra must have bought a mountain of them and cannot (or will not) change them until their customers have eaten their way through the mountain. This is not only a review of the modem, more importantly, it is a review of Telstra's performance. Do they waive their fees for the period when the internet service is out of action due to the non-performance of their modems? No? Then they are taking money when they are not providing a service.
Worst product – With in 1 year time it has just died twice, only good thing is Telstra replace them for free. But you need to suffer till it gets delivered to you without any internet. Show details
Cheap , Poor Performance: A Disappointing Product Experience – The Telstra Smart Modem has fallen short of expectations for a household with 6+ high-demand users/devices. The 5GHz band frequently cuts off when the network is under heavy load, requiring constant power cycling to restore connectivity. The range is mid at best. This has been a frustrating experience, especially considering I signed up for… Read more
their Ultrafast NBN 1000 (700 Mbps).
As a result, I had to provision a BYO modem to achieve a stable connection.
The poor customer experience has left me with the impression that their proprietary equipment are subpar.
Do not waste your money! – If I could give zero stars I would. Running 2 devices crashes it. Constantly having to restart it. This product is soooo not worth the money! Will be going back to Starlin. Show details
Same bad experience – Connected my new Modem 2 weeks ago and have lost the signal a number of times, the signal restores without any action. I have read many similar posts on the NET so I wont bother contacting Telstra and will connect my old Modem. not happy Show details
Don’t bother get an aftermarket one – I bought this modem thinking it was the best for big households as I lived in NBN new area couldn’t use the black broadband one that was terrific especially for range I worked 700 metres away from my house and still weak connection. So I built a new small solid brick house no connection in any bedroom so Telstra said I needed booster so $288 out… Read more
of pocket but hey it worked. Built a dream home bigger 4 bedroom house with home office in main bedroom booster in our bedroom and the printer connects to something in the house, but my iPad, iPhone, laptop, partners iPad and iPhone can’t connect to the booster if when sitting next to it! I have to hotspot from my phone to other devices. The other 2 boosters work fine for the children. But this is where it makes me angry my older daughter still lives in the old house no booster just an aftermarket Asus and has connections right through the house, oh and she’s with Optus. I have to use this whole text message system and I feel like I’m talking to a 2 year old repeating myself over and over, I’ve been with Telstra for 40 years and I have never spent so long on the phone writing out my problems in one message it was 6 hours. After 2 hours now I keep informing them how long it takes. Telstra has literally days to fix it or partner is changing providers in the hopes that fixes it. All the modems have gone to plastic with internal antenna which cheaply produced offshore then charge us $$$$$$. Customer service has all but gone, Facebook Telstra are the best for replying and following up. I have set up the 3 boosters placed them throughout the house, modem is central in the house. I have reset the modem nearly daily for a month and nothing. I’m on my second thanks to lightning struck our power plant and surged out most of our suburb surge protection did nothing. Replaced it with a refurbished one and that’s where the problems started, they go on the computer and just say it’s working well why can’t every device connect to it?
Modem failure and service issues with TELSTRA Smart Modems – I am on my 3rd Smart Modem. The most recent one lasted a week. I have switched back to the old White Modem which works fine for my home use. I have spent hours on the phone to Telstra literally to resolve these issues. So its not just the quality of the Modems its the difficulty in resolving the problem and time wasted. There is no sensible answer if these units just continue to fail. Show details
Gen 3 terrible telstra service modem died – My gen 3 router just died today. Rang telstra on the phone and asked if I took it to a telstra shop if I could have it replaced. They said that they had to wait 3 to 5 days to have it replaced. I run a business from home and this does not help me when I need a seemless line so that I can keep my products turning over. This is a very average modem and wish telstra would sell garbage product. Show details
DIED AFTER 11 MONTHS – This was a 5 star review but it died after 11 months. Seems the reviews were right. CAN'T RECOMMEND! It did work great until it didn't. OLD REVIEW BELOW My old Telstra DJN2130 modem has been getting worse for a while. Wifi and or LAN connection would randomly drop out and could be out for minutes or hours and not be fixed by a reboot. Setup… Read more
was simply plugging in the power, phone and an Ethernet cable. I only use this as a modem with wifi internet supplied by a TP Link Mesh system (do not use extenders, mesh systems are far better). As such, I turned off the Gen 3 wifi and didn't have to change existing wifi username and passwords. The system has now been operational for 7 days straight and performed flawlessly.
The 4G LTE strength is 4 out of 5 bars. I haven't had to use 4G fallback yet but it should work fine. Other reviews indicate there is about 20-30 seconds of downtime between NBN dropping out and 4G (25 Mbps) coming in.

Great Telstra marketing but terrible product – After the great marketing by Telstra telling us the gen 3 is 60% faster than the gen 2 we decided to upgrade also purchasing two extenders which are only compatible with the gen 3 modem, we have made a big mistake as the modem is absolute garbage, just stops working for no reason We have just had our 3rd Telstra gen 3 modem stop working in the… Read more
last 3 months, we only had this one for 3 weeks, Telstra have been great in replacing them but we are over the inconvenience and are moving on to another provider, we also have two useless extenders as they are not compatible with any other modem, while Telstra persists using these modems I would would not recommend using them,
Good but bad – worked good at first, then after a storm it was dead, had a replacement but it keep to drop out and now, after a few weeks only, it seems to be completely out of action. I don't recommend this modem, it's a money trap, unless maybe you're lucky. Show details
Not good enough – Connection is great and range ok. First one lasted 4 months. Second one lasted 12 hours. Same issue, just does not get power to modem. Lights at back of modem very dim. Tried multiple outlets. Just dies. Waiting on 3rd modem but have no confidence as they send refurbished and not brand new. Only brand new to new customers. $100 a month. What gets… Read more
me is they give you a reference number so you don’t have to repeat yourself but they always ask what’s the issue and try telling you do this or that. Even the link they send you to keep track comes back with error message. Have contract with them so trying to get out of it as they can’t provide a service they advertise. Do they even test the modems as I have 2 to send back or do they just send them back out again. Update from 13th July This new modem working fine. They sent a brand new one without the adapter for the 240v. The cable goes straight from the box to power outlet (no adapter in between) So far no troubles
Update,This one lasted 5 days.
Avoid this modem – Utter rubbish. Every time there is a power failure it takes hours to get the internet back correctly. Now it’s so stuffed up, half of the connected devices say they have no connection. I hate this modem so much. Show details
A very poor performer – This is an incredibly disappointing product - I have had 2 of them now and neither were any better than the Gen 2 device that they replaced. Both dropped out semi-regularly and the so-called "smart" wireless back up never once kicked in effectively. These drop outs were, to be fair, mostly for short time periods but were still enough to disrupt an… Read more
online work meeting or to interrupt the flow of a movie or a streamed sports event. The first unit simply stopped working - within its warranty period so it was not old. The second (replaced under warranty) is currently dying a slower death where the drop-out frequency and time length are now consistently increasing. This Gen 3 unit is less than 6 months old. To put this into perspective - the Gen 3 devices even when they were initially working as they should (i.e. minimal drop outs) were never any faster or "smarter" than the Gen 2 unit I have used previously.
USELESS! – It's not worth the material it's made out of! The item has a very poor delivery and if one was to add a booster (or two), it wouldn't make any difference. It's just a money grabbing gimmick. I have put up with it for over a year, with constant outages, dropouts and poor quality service. Third World concept! Show details
Worst modem ever – This is the worst modem I have ever had. Had 3 new gen 3 over 2 years, as well as my other house in regional Qld we have had 4 over the same time. Show details
Telstra Smart Modem 3 -Ive now had two of them and they are terrible – I’ve self-employed and now had two of these modems from Telstra. They are really bad. I’m in a small area (less than 50sqm) and the fixed internet and Wi-Fi keep dropping out. I’ve lost well over two week’s productivity battling Telstra (via their app) to fix the issue. Telstra keep blaming NBN- NBN tests prove them wrong again and again.… Read more
Finally I’ve given up - went to my local Harvey Norman store - purchased a cheaper (and much better Modem) outright and it hasn’t missed a beat.
