So much potential so few smart devices on offer! – Important: The below review is specific to TP-Link's Tapo smart devices and Tapo cameras. I did try to specify this on my review but it got allocated to TP-Link. I actually have warmer feelings towards the company TP-Link as a whole and would give them at least 4 stars as I feel their customer services and support is one of the best in the… Read more

TP-Link - TAPO review:

I have a bunch of TP-Link "smart" devices and cameras that all fall under the brand Tapo. This has it's own app that is separate (and not compatible) with some of the other Tp-link cameras and smart devices!

There is a Tapo app that can be used to link and program the cameras and smart devices. This is generally Ok and has its good points and bad. My advice would be to consider if Tapo offers sufficient devices if you wish to use their app. Note: Third party apps such as Home Assistant do seem to be able to take control of Tapo devices.

I am considering installing Home Assistant on an old computer so I can integrate my Tapo devices with devices from other manufacturers in order to supplement the missing functionality.

What I like --------------- - Devices are easily added via the app - Currently no subscription necessary - Remote control of devices via the internet - Multiple locations - Set up basic smart control - The cameras all seem to have a micro SD card for storing data so you don't have to pay for a subscription

What I don't like ------------------------ - 2 year warranty - pretty stingy I would want to see at least a 7-10 year warranty on this sort of stuff. To automate my home I have about 20 of these devices which is not a small investment if they all start failing after 2 years! - The range of non-camera devices is frustratingly small (smart socket, smart bulb, temperature sensor, button, window magnet switch, pir sensor, chime unit and leak detection module). Where are the built in modules like light switch or actual wall socket or ir blaster or fire alarm interface or smoke detector, etc. - The non-camera smart devices is limited to indoor use only and most are battery power only. I use a few of them outdoors but I have put them in weather proof cases (an empty peppermint tic-tac box!) - It would be useful to be able to choose wifi or Tapo hub for connecting smart plugs and smart bulbs as they appear to be adversely affecting the 2g wifi connection. - Tapo Wifi devices in large numbers seem to cause slowdown on my wifi network. - It would be really useful to be able to set a flag within the smart system like a virtual device for example if all of the sensors are set in one way you could set 'away' or another way set 'home' and do automation accordingly. You can do this using an actual device like a smart socket or light but it is annoying. - Wifi devices only have 2ghz and can not connect to 5ghz wifi networks. - Lack of compatibility with TP-Links other smart devices and cameras.

Product is not durable and customer service is shocking – Tapo C200 camera was perfectly working for over 30 months but failed to start upon automatic firmware update. Customer service advised to go to store for replacement but the store does not sell these anymore and have none in stock. The TP-Link customer service suggested me to send the device interstate at my expense for a replacement and the… Read more

process will take quite some time. Customer service is located overseas and not up to Australian standards. Not happy to bear the postage costs.

I am inclined not to use any TP-Link products as they do not last long and the customer service / warranty is difficult to navigate.

Upon contacting Mate for technical assistance to rectify my error in setting-up a Mesh Wi-Fi system the product/service knowledge provided by Ozzie was particularly impressive. Very happy with the tp-link customer services and Tinecia.N was very helpful and was able to fix my issue in no time. She is very knowledgeable with the tplink modem which I got from JB and was able to help me connect to my ISP correctly after several calls to my ISP which didn’t fix my issue. Vet happy customer. Thanks a lot. Kevin Show details

Had issues from the moment this was mounted on the wall. As soon as the solar was plugged in the device dropped off the network. After 3 weeks of troubleshooting, TP Link came to the conclusion that the device was faulty as it would drop off the network when the solar was connected...... Then starts the lengthy RMA process where they send a return… Read more

label, then you send the camera back, then once they have received it they will send you a new camera. They did offer to send a replacement camera within 2 days after Aus Post had received my camera, however i had already spent 3 weeks troubleshooting (trying different solar units, recording and debugging under different circumstances, pinging over time frames with different circumstances and logging times of all the actions) and was past wasting more time on this company.

12 September 2025. I paid $1,295 for supposedly a premium router. TP Link Archer. I wasted hours setting it up, but it would not work. I called from NSW Australia. TP-link recorded my call without my consent. This is unlawful but they clearly do not care. So, they refused me service unless I had my call recorded. I then had to pay a tech guru… Read more

to install the router. He said TP-Link were a bad brand and the router was faulty (after hours and charging me too).

I returned the router via Amazon.

I will find another provider that respects the law and my privacy.

Not very reliable, both hardware, and service (helpdesk responds, but helpless; API/service is extremely unreliable) – I have over 15 products purchased over the last few years from TP-Link, related to home automation. Its the second time now that ALL of the appliances (switch boards, bulbs, and plug points) gone out of sync. When this happens, I need to go around the house and re-program them (reset, relink-to-wifi, and set their schedule), just imagine doing… Read more

this for 15 products. A nightmare. Also some products (two plug points) give a funny sound, and won't work as expected. Just because it was a few months out of warranty date now it has become useless, costing me of the appliance (laser printer) itself which got broke as this plug was switching on and off all night without me knowing. I'm ashamed I chose this brand despite what some warned me about. Now writing this so that someone else can save the hassle and invest their hard earned cash elsewhere.

After several years of persevering with range extender rated at 300 mbps and only getting 36.4 mbps on Speedtest I just upgraded to the TP link AX1800 wi-fi range extender and it is the best $109.00 (Amazon AU) I have EVER SPENT. I had a decent experience with TP link this time around with warranty. I purchased the unit about 18 months ago from The Good Guys and at the 9 month mark one of the units had intermitted faults. (dropping wifi and internet connections) I went through trouble shooting with TP Link and they directed me to do some diagnostics download some software,… Read more

runs some test etc and swap the primary unit with one of the node. This seems to have alleviate the main issue of dropping internet connection but still had intermitted Wifi drop out within the house that I could put up with. (Note that to reduce the wifi drop out rate I had resulted in using a ethernet back haul, turning wifi mesh off and assigning devices to certain unit) Fast forward 9 months and the unit would no longer connect to the internet. I contacted TP link via the phone and the operator gave some instructions to try to pin point the issue. I know it was an issue with TP link units as I had a older Linksys unit that would connect to the internet and the TP link would work in Access point mode only. After trouble shooting with the operator for about 15 minutes she concluded it was a major fault likely to do with the ethernet port. She sent a email requested photos or the unit with Serial numbers and Version numbers plus receipt of the unit and TP link sent code authorising the retailer to replace the unit. I went to good guys Booval and the staff Haley quickly and promptly process the return and provided a new unit. (5 stars for Haley)

Setup & Service – Tried to setup the Deco myself and failed miserably. After calling the TP-Link Technical Support line I was able to set up the Deco X20 painlessly thanks to Mona Shan talking through everything in a helpful and knowledgable manner.
