Great car, counting 200,000 kms and still strong – My car is counting 7 years now and the only issue I ever had was a fuel sensor These cars are also extremely easy to service requiring only basic tools and a 36mm socket Also considering the vehicle has over 300hp it’s very good on fuel averaging around 9.2L / 100km I hope the new ones prove to be as tough as I’m interested to upgrade Show details

Volvo D5 Teknik – Been a 4wd owner most of my life but recently retired and decided I wasn't going to go hardcore fishing any more. Only needed an AWD so I could launch my small boat over the beach. Looked at all the usual Japanese makes which were so uninspiring and suddenly discovered the Volvo. Reviews suggested it could be good so I took the punt. Turned out to… Read more

be magnificent. Fantastic on road, gets 800km+ around the city and over 1000km in the country. Took it onto the beach down on the south coast, let the tyres down to 17psi and it killed it. My mate in his Isuzu got bogged but I didn't. Extremely comfortable, Volvo safe. Get it serviced at a Volvo dealer which is very reasonably priced. Cheaper than the Mitsubishi Challenger I used to own. Recommend.

Fantastic car, plenty of room – Bought back in November, one of the first in Aus, and was given a Bluetooth Speaker as a thank-you. The car is perfect, performs & handles like a dream, but short second delay with the gearbox. The center screen controls most of the car, probably a step below a Tesla, includes semi-autonomous driving. The car is pretty much maxed-out in terms of… Read more

it's packages. The car has plenty of room, especially in the middle seat, which in SUV's these days, are rare.

T5 Inscription, so best of the best. Good fuel economy, and reliable. I couldn't live without it. It's definitely a fun car to drive, especially the semi-autonomous part, being only a learner, it's a fun car to learn in. Definitely recommend if you want a quality SUV.

Beautiful, safe family car – What a fun car to drive! Drives beautifully, performs well and super comfortable. The T6 R-Design is one of the most fun SUVs I've driven and would definitely recommend this car. Fuel consumption can be a slight issue. Volvo say it should be somewhere around 10L/100km, I've found it's somewhere like 12-13L/100km. But I guess the size and performance of the engine is responsible for that. Great car. Very stylish and safe.  Show details

Great family car – The car runs on diesel and means it is very smooth to drive. It is an all wheel drive but you can push it to do some of the things a 4WD could do like driving it on the beach. There isn't too much noise and heaps of legroom for the front 5 seats and a bit squished in the back seats but what can you expect.  Show details

Value for money – Not as sporty as the X3 or the Q5 but has the best interior in its class and generation. The safety features are awesome. Adaptive cruise control is great but not accurate some Times especially when the car in the distance is stationary . The booster seat feature is unique and the best.  Show details

Safety is paramount – This car has been amazing. Initially I was hung up on the bad image that Volvo cars had but once I realised the families safety was much more important than image, I really started to love this car. We use it mainly for school runs and the city commute but have taken it on one 6 hour drive down to the country. The petrol option has been economical… Read more

even on that long drive. Love the City Safety auto braking option which has come in handy quick a few times helping me avoid an accident. The interior is lovely and the kids use the inbuilt booster seats. The only issue we had were the indicator lights kept fusing but once they worked out that water had leaked into it in a storm, they dried it out and has been fine ever since. We love it so much, we are thinking another Volvo for the upgrade!

Third Volvo and still as good as ever – After a series of disastrous Renaults, VWs, etc we went for a Volvo back in 1980. We bought a 245 station wagon which is one of the best cars ever designed! It went everywhere a 4WD went and lasted without one problem for over 20 years. Then we upgraded to an 850 with front wheel drive and sports car handling and loved it for over 20 years without… Read more

a single problem! Why would we want to change? We love our XC60 and maybe we won't be as lucky as with our other two, but it is supremely comfortable and we feel very safe (having lost my beloved sister in a Fiat). I am a DIY tragic, and this car carries huge amounts from Bunnings with very easily convertible seats, plus we get amazing fuel efficiency with our D5 diesel engine. It is also great for country trips along indifferent roads and the drive technology is awesome. I had it serviced for the first time after a year, and it cost just over $300!!! Hopefully it will last for the same 20 years as our other beloved Volvos, and if not, I will give it a more negative review....meanwhile, it is one of the loves of our lives!

Volvo XC60 a few rattles and lack of smoothness – It gets about 12 litres per 100kms which is good for a 2 tonne car but there is some turbo lag so have to be careful when merging with traffic. The front passenger side door rattled so I go my mechanic to look at it. He adjusted it so it now only very slightly rattles but the downside is you have to shut the front passenger side door quite hard… Read more

for it to shut properly. Also, there is a fault with the drive shaft. After about 45 000 kms I noticed the car is not as smooth when accelerating and my mechanic said this is due to the drive shaft. My car is two wheel drive and 2 new drive shafts would cost $6000. My mechanic said it doesn't matter so best not to worry about it. He said one guy had a Volvo XC60 that shook so much that it seemed the dashboard was going to fall out but that was because it had done 300 000 kms. I only do 5000 kms per year and I am pleased with my purchase. Folksam have rated the Volvo S60 as being 60% safer than the average car and this car is based on that - only 200kg heavier so must be very safe car. Folksam haven't rated this car because not enough sold in Sweden yet. Volvo design the car so it is difficult to put on after-market parts so I had to pay a lot of money to put rear camera on it for reversing.

Best car ever owned – I was a highly reluctant Volvo owner for all the image reasons. When our kids came along I realised safety before vanity so I agreed to this SUV for our family car. brakes stop the car itself if you are travelling under 30km/h. It has saved us quite a few times from accidents.

- In built child booster seats in the rear so no need to get external boosters for older kids

- boot opens and closes at touch of a button. No more fumbling around with shopping

- reversing camera shows exactly what is behind. Some other cars have cheap drawings/sketchings only

Only issue we have had is the front indicator kept fusing but Volvo Service fixed it after working out water got into lights.

We managed to get the car with 5 year free servicing using a corporate package. So make sure you ask if the company you work for esp if it is a large resource have special packages which includes free serviicng before you buy the car so you can write it into the sales contract. I am truly convinced about Volvos now and will gladly buy another one.

Problems start to show XC60 D5 – I wanted a smaller diesel AWD, and pretty much the only option was the XC60 in terms of safety and price in comparison to other European cars. We also already had an XC90, and although had some horrific problems with the engine, the XC90 was an older car, so I was prepared to take a chance on the XC60 being a newer 2012 model. However, with only… Read more

77,000 km's on it the engine is making a strange noise/rattle and now the gear box is playing up. It is now out of the three year Volvo warranty, so likely to cost thousands to repair. You can also only take a newer Volvo to the dealer, given the sealed gearbox unit. Our experience with the Volvo dealer in Newcastle , McCarroll's has not been good. But have no choice. The options in the XC60, including safety are impressive. But this pales where the engine problems cost thousands to fix. The fuel economy in the diesel model that I have is great. But the road noise and engine noise of the diesel is significant. You certainly can tell the difference in noise level between a petrol and diesel engine. The ride in the XC60 is very bouncy, the suspension doesn't absorb even the smallest of bumps as you would expect in an AWD and even driving around the city the ride is very rough. The car has rear parking sensors and rear camera and without this option the car would be very difficult to park because the rear vision is very limited. Front vision is also limited with the driver sitting very low within the cabin and the bottom of the window above shoulder height and I'm above average height. I guess this is the price you pay for safety. Even though the seat is adjustable and you can raise it to see better over the bonnet, this actually then blocks your view of the odometer and other instruments because the steering wheel is then in the way when you raise the seat. There is plenty of leg room for passengers and the seats are comfortable and very nicely finished in leather. However, the rear cargo space is only just big enough for the weekly shopping and Volvo should have considered doing the split rear cargo door as they did with the older XC90. It is much more practical and stops objects rolling out when you lift the rear hatch. The handling of the car is also a little bit odd, the steering is really 'floaty' and there is a tiny delay when you turn the wheel before the car responds, which you do adjust to after awhile. But still weird. Overall, I'm disappointed with the car, especially the ride and handling, and certainly the cost to repair.

Great car until the problems began – Purchased a new 2015 Volvo XC60 D5 R-design Polstar (top of the range) from the Gold Coast dealer in 2015. problem at various speeds which over time got worse and worse, the parts of the sunroof feel off, the drivers door inside feel off and the sat Nav system would randomly reset itself whilst driving.

The jolting and surge problem was the worst ongoing problem and it was dangerous. Austral Volvo Brisbane couldn't find the problem, in fact they ended up saying the car was fine and the issue was a characteristic of the vehicle. They were hopeless to say the least, Volvo Australia were even worse. When I contacted them I got a grumpy old man who couldn't care less about me or my car - not ideal for a new $65,500 car.

I recently traded out of my Volvo lemon and I haven't looked back - I lost almost $20,000 on my poor choice in cars and know now to never buy a Volvo again.

Volvo is on the way out, it was purchased by a Chinese company Geely in the GFC from Ford basically to get their safety technology Intel. It's a brand slowly declining in Australia. Their service is appalling and their vehicles are worthless crap boxes which leave you frustrated and down $20k.

Do yourself a favour buy something else - please.

Engine and Transmission Problems – I bought a used XC60 T5 with 30,000 miles expecting it would be a reliable SUV, but my XC60 did not meet my expectations of quality from Volvo. fuel).

What brought Volvo to my attention was an ergonomics conference they sponsored where they presented on safety and driverless technology. The technology in the current car reduces collisions by 38% and driverless will be even better. Less harm to people - happy to support that. The new narrow frontal collision test for the new US 5 star safety rating is very severe and the XC60 is the only car that has passed that test so far. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSdQyVNUvTc

The average punter out there doesn't know these cars and I like being under the radar so to speak. I can mope around with my 177KW monster knowing I have more grunt that 95% of the competition as well as being safer than 99% of the competition. Has 20" wheels with Scorpion tyres which I have used before and they were well and are good in the wet. Handling is fantastic but low profiles tyres mean easy side wall damage so have to be careful of curbs and this is not for serious off road. Would love to try it on a race track. Lots of technology to get used to - takes ages to work through the manual but once you get the hand of it relatively intuitive. Two menu systems, one for the car, connectivity and support systems, etc. and another for the dashboard stuff like odometer and screen styles.

Only glitch we have had so far is the radio/nav screen not turning on. Thought we may be holding our mouth the wrong way, apparently a software glitch so it has to get its software re-loaded. Hope that's all it is. There is no oil dip stick and the dashboard oil level doesn't say much. Just a gray - assume it goes orange or red if there is a problem (will be asking). I have been driving it hard and it returned 8.1 Litres per 100 Km.

The driver assist takes a bit of getting used to. The radar selects the speed of the car in front, so if you want to maintain speed and go past, need to change lanes early. Had a pedestrian run out in front of me in city and the city assist system turned the radio down, bleated alarm and set-off red lights on the windscreen as well as braking - so that works but I was only doing 30 Kmh. On a freeway whilst cruising I had someone pull in front of me (the way [word removed] do and then slow down), and the brakes went-on. I assume the brake lights do as well.

The diesel will give you 8.5 seconds to 100Kmh if you use the manual gear paddles and change early at 3000RPM to ride the torque curve. Otherwise it is 11 seconds. It is slow off the mark compared to other punchy diesels I have had like a current Kia Sportage or a Jeep GC with the 2.7 litre Merc motor - they get away from the lights like a stung cat but the D5 Volvo Polestar is more sedate. However where the Kia and the Jeep loose their breath at 60 Kmh, the D5's twin turbo gives it a lung full and it races to whatever speed you want. I kicked it down on a highway to get past one of those people who do 90Kmh on a straight section and was doing 130Kmh in no time (wasn't expecting such fast acceleration at speed compared to previous diesels - had to cut back quickly).

The speed limit monitoring system is good with road side signs but the freeway overhead signs befuddle it. It was telling me I could do 180Kmh on the Westgate Freeway (if only). It can't read the time periods for school zones so it warns you that you are doing 60 in a 2:30pm 40 zone at midnight.

The seats are brilliant, as is all the other ergonomics. Remember, they sponsored an ergonomist's conference where they had their product for review, brave if you build un-ergonomic cars.

Great boot space. Will buy my daughters Volvos second hand with the safety smarts. I am just hoping now that the reliability lives up to its reputation - otherwise I am converted.

acceleration smoother.

It is smaller than a Territory, which I have had, but fuel economy and and comfort is not bad. In my car it isn't digital dash or instruments, it is analogue, and I can manage well with that. I dont like the steering wheel spokes, your hand wants to sit where the spoke is, and repositioning is annoying, so it doesn't make is comfortable in that respect. Later models have fixed this.

My seats are softer leather so have given a bit in the spread and hold of the seat, not as firm and fitting as before. While the back seats are firmer and less comfortable. Later models are made of harder or thicker leather, so will hold better on fit and comfort.

I like the ability to change setting like door locking when driving off, folding mirrors, tank setting as to what you get and use, looking at the statistics it has. But do you believe it all anyway? I don't know but it looks good. The speech recognition for the phone connection via bluetooth is very receptive. The sat nav is really not up to date, or maybe where I have been roads are still in the planning stages.

I had looked at Audi, BMW for the price range, but the Volvo was better placed in my opinion. I have entertained upgrading but having read other reports, I may wait until it reaches 3-4 years and see what it does. If it doesn't have the legs and resale, I wont be spending all the cash, given newer cars are more competitive in price if you are looking for an SUV/Wagon style. You can save 20-30,000 by looking at other makes, but I am not sure you would get the safety features a Volvo has. Times are changing, should Volvo look at pricing?

I have had it serviced twice, pretty expensive but only once a year. The wipers are horrendously expensive. I did take it back after the first service as I was not quite happy with the pick up and speed, it just seemed lacking and I really hated them upgrading but not looking at my setting and putting it back how it was. SO I have had to go in and reset all my settings and this is extremely annoying.

I have to say I have grown accustomed to my Volvo, I probably have ruined it's good name, I am not a normal volvo driver and tend to plant it often, definitely not a bloody volvo driver! Now that was a great add!

Steering occasionally makes graunch sound under tight lock.

Climate control only separate for each side. Could do with co-ordinated control.

Only reason for the non 5 star rating is the power steering issue. Discovered a leak after 4 months, and lost steering due to low hydraulic fluid levels. Google told me there had been a recall in the UK, for the same issue - so took it straight back to Scuderia, and they replaced the rack and pinion unit under warranty in 48hrs.

So - great service from Scuderia, but a bit disappointing that Volvo Australia haven't recalled these units voluntarily.

Monday and road tested vehicle with Service Technician. We didn't drive 100metres before he acknowledged there was a problem. Dealer then proceeded to "strip "car apart looking for problem. The car stayed there for a week where i was in constant contact with Service Manager who stated they had " no idea" what the problem is. Dealer called me a week later to say vehicle was ready for collection and they found the heater hose was expanding when hot and rubbing on suspension???

I collected vehicle and within 10mins again noticed ' knocking' noise from front of vehicle. I called dealer back again and they instructed me to return vehicle next week. I returned vehicle and again road tested with a Service Technician. He acknowledged problem again. Vehicle was left again and stripped down. A week later dealer told me they were referring it to Volvo in Sweden. Surprise Surprise Volvo came back as knocking noise being a "characteristic" of the vehicle. What the ??

Hard to imagine dealer spending 2 weeks labour plus parts stripping down car if they thought it was a "characteristic".

I had an indépendant licensed mechanic and a mechnical engineer both acknowledge there is a knocking noise and file reports to state that it was reasonable to think a knocking noise would not be a characteristic with a $65k Volvo.

I took Volvo and the dealer to the consumer claims tribunal. They pretty much threw all the evidence out and said i needed acoustics engineers reports etc and said they had no case to answer. I promised my wife prior to the CCT hearing whatever the result i would let it be.

So im stuck with a $65k Volvo lemon with a knocking noise. I will be keeping it 3yrs and absorb a bit of the loss but i tell everyone i know , i would never ever again buy a Volvo. What a Lemon.

I know it sounds silly but it feels as if you and the car are making the journey, its feels like its looking after you on the longer lonely ones. We absolutely love it. Fuels good, power excessive, handling great but you need to push it to make it work. Maintenance reasonable (app. the same as Toyota). Didn't like the petrol model though particularly the base. People say "its still a Volvo" but we don't mind..we love it!! Just for fun, blow a few "want to be's" away in you Volvo!! Cool car. If /when you have crash, be in a Volvo. I read somewhere, these cars are voted the safest/ANCAP in the world!! pipping the Merc's. I'm pretty sure it was an American review. A mother I know now only drives Volvos because she had a crash in one, it was bad, the passengers in the other car where in trouble but the Volvo saved the 3 of them.

September 2nd 2017 Update: Volvo have alienated their customers treating them with contempt. BEWARE!

Volvo have flooded the market with cheap run out xc60's.

Our 4 year old 90000km car is now basically worthless.

Volvo, I assume have/will loose many clients who intended "trading up".

We have purchased a Subaru Outback 2.5 with a Tour Pack/5 year warranty and other goodies which everything (and more) we need. Ride quality is OK, compared to the Volvo.

If we scrap the Subaru in 4 years with 90000 's we will not have lost as much as we have with the Volvo, infact we will still be $4000 ahead!!!!

So, no argument, the Subaru is not the Volvo ride/power etc wise but we have a very large moral/ethical problem dealing with a company who manipulates the market in their favour thus leaving their loyal customers with a product that has depreciated from $70000 to $19000 in four years having done only 90000km

,...we will never buy a Volvo again......

shame because they are a beautiful car. A company of no morality/ethics dealing with their existing/repeat customers. Not for the pretentious.Very safe.

peter – have owned our d5 rdesign polster for nearly twelve months. very economical and powerful. quiet and very comfortable. spacious amost excellent. a little firm on the ride. only two issues so far. A stone hit the windscreen which cost over $1500 to repair, so we had to use insurance, but Volvo Australia had none and the car was off the road for 6… Read more

weeks before one arrived. Melbourne city Volvo payed for 2 weeks of our rental. very good service. the other problem is the car veers slightly to the left. 2 wheel alignments later and still does. Bob Jane did not charge for their alignment, (number 3) as they said they couldn't fix it. I am now bewildered. Volvo have been silent when asked what should I do? most things, looks fantastic, power, economy comfort room steering drag to the left. more air in left tyres helps a little

No hat required :) – I've had my D5 for more than 12 months now and love it. So economical, tows a 900Kg loaded camper like it isn't even there, roomy, well built. Only issue is a rattle from the right hand side of the passenger cabin somewhere. I just turn up the audio LOL. Handles muddy tracks well, which is about all I will ever do off the blacktop. Buying the car… Read more ·  1

was a very pleasant experience from Trivett in Alexandria. After sales is also proving worthwhile. Tows beautifully, economical, roomy. Mysterious rattle in the cabin.

almost perfect – Swapped the supercharged AMG for the R-design XC60 T6 AWD Polestar as the family grew and I wanted something with some GO. Happy to say that I'm impressed. 242kw turbo charged straight six gives this model some serious momentum. It's surprisingly swift. On the sensible side, this has everything EXCEPT a digital readout of the speed. Such a shame… Read more ·  2

Volvo! All the modern conveniences and what I feel is a very safe and secure vehicle for my family. The blind spot system is brilliant! Premium sound system is also excellent. Owned for 5 months and is spot on. Had known issue with a vibration under load but Volvo replaced an oil pump and all fixed within a day...and they drove out a courtesy car and returned mine cleaned inside and out. That is service! powerful/ load space /modern convenience /service/ blind spot warning system no digital speed readout

XC60 D5 - Very reliable and frugal SUV - Excellent! – My family and I travelled between Jan - June 2012 with our Volvo XC60 Diesel D5 around Australia. 25.000km, towing a compact caravan and no problem at all. Very strong Diesel engine and great on fuel. We average 7.5 /100 km for normal commuting and when towing a 1.600 kg Caravan 11 l / 100km. Great quality ride on long distances. The car is now 2… Read more

years old and has 50.000 km on the clock. Very reliable and never had any issue.. Great dealer customer service (Melbourne City Volvo). As this car was bought as a corporate vehicule, Volvo is offering 5 years / 100.000 km free of charge servicing. Great value for a European Diesel SUV. Compatct size and generous internal space and big boot for its category (compact SUV). The only little downside I could mention is the diesel rattle at idle. No issue for me, as the car offers a strong pleasant ride and is very frugal. looks great, excellent ride, strong and frugal diesel, high build quality, reliable, no service costs (coporate program) diesel rattle at idle

Volvo XC60 Nightmare – Since we took delivery of our new XC60 T6 12 months ago in NZ it has been a nightmare. Our car has 6,500km on the clock, has been off the road for a total of 4 weeks and has experienced the following problems  Engine oil leak - new gasket was fitted and the car was off the road for over a week  False seat belt alarms (an intermittent fault,… Read more

that has not been resolved)

 City safety stopping the car on two occasions when approaching intersections. With no cars / or obstacles in the way, terrifying my wife and two boys. (They claim the software has now been updated, we’ll see)

 Since the oil leak repair we have had to top-up the engine oil, we suspect we still have an issue and asked the dealer to check this out on the 12 month service. (refer below)

 The car failed the WOF due to a leak from the power steering, a new steering rack was fitted

 When installing the steering rack the dealer discovered a faulty steering pipe also had to be replaced

 We were then informed of further delays as a new bolt was also required to complete the same job

For the latest fix the car was off the road 16 days

When very reluctantly collecting the car we were informed that we would need to check the engine every 1,000km!

We contacted Volvo Sweden who claimed it is the responsibility of the NZ agent now, not theirs. We did point out that Volvo manufactured the car, not the agent! Not the type of support I expected when buying a Volvo. We have owned 8 new cars before without any issues, this is our first and last Volvo. Looks good Poor quality, engine leak, power steering issue, electronics issues, safety issue (City Safety)

Excellent – I had the XC90 which I loved prior to the XC60. What a huge but amazing difference. A fantastic car. Smaller but still very spacious. I had a choice of the BMW X5 or the XC60 and the kids and I both voted for the XC60. Very glad we did. Very nifty, spacious, comfortable with all the mod cons. None that I found in the year I have had it.
