Great SUV – Bought my Freelander II TD SE in June 2015 as a demo with 5,000kms on it for $35k. Previous car was a Toyota Kluger I bought new. The Freelander is much nicer to drive, more fuel efficient and heap easier to park, better at towing being a Turbo diesel, handles better being rear wheel drive etc. I've now done 43,000kms and had no repairs. The only… Read more
fault it has is a rough gear change clunk back into drive when I've had the climate control on. It's not major and happens on other cars when you run the AC as the revs are higher. But it's annoying and will push the mechanic to fix it. Services are around the $800 from the dealer but only once a year. I was paying far more for the Kluger twice a year. Great fuel economy on the open road (7ltrs per 100kms) but was hoping for better around town than 11ltrs per 100kms which is 6ltrs better than I got from the Kluger so not really complaining. I find the luggage space adequate to pack for a weekend away with wife, two kids and the dog including a 40ltr esky. Have used the 4wd a bit beach launching a tinny and done a few fire tracks. No issues and I'm confident it's ability exceeds my needs. A neighbor had the series one for many years and loved it and was very jealous when I got my series two. I love it and can't think what I would replace it with but dream of having a Range Rover one day. By far the best car I've had. Update on 5/12/2022. I've now done over 80,000 kms and no problems or breakdowns etc still love it. The dealer managed to fix the rough gear change issues a few years ago after it caused an engine mount to break. All fixed under warranty even though it had expired because it was well documented beforehand. My only frustration was they couldn't or wouldn't say what the actual problem was. My six year service was rather pricey because the timing belts had to be changed. In April we did big family road trip to QLD of over 5,000kms with some national park 4wding. Didn't miss a beat and averaged 8kms/litre fully loaded with 4 people and gear.
it's been an excellent car – I bought mine new 10 years ago and it has now got 299,104 kilometres on it. I do a lot of off road, quite difficult in fact and this car is only limited by ground clearance. It's been across the Simpson Desert, Victorian High Country, Fraser Island, Robe, Flinders Ranges, just about everywhere. It's been a great car, very comfortable, sub 10 l/100… Read more
kilometres fuel economy. My wife has a bad back and doesn't like driving in many cars but loves this car.
I gave up on Land Rover servicing after the first service, too expensive. My local guy has done all the services at half the cost. The motor still doesn't use any oil to speak of. Even after all the terrible rough roads I've been on, there are still no interior rattles. I have to rate it as extremely well built.
It has never been towed anywhere, never broken down. The pre 2010 models had a rear diff bearing whine, mine was replaced under warranty at 70,000 kms and has been good since. The key fobs can give battery trouble after a while. The battery is soldered in so not easy to replace but very cheap if you can do it yourself. I bought a new empty fob for $20 and a battery for $4 and all like new again.
My car now has a shudder in the drive train under some circumstances. I like this car so much that I'm putting up with it. Nobody can tell me exactly what is wrong so I'm waiting for it to break to get the answer. I find this acceptable for a car that has been relatively trouble free for 10 years and 300k kms, especially after the beating I have given it. In my opinion the car still looks very good.
Pros: Comfortable, economical, well built, extremely capable for a soft roader, lovely to drive
Cons: Relatively rare in Australia so spares, accessories are scarce. Mechanics only want to work on Toyotas
Timing belt snapped at 80,000 k – Bought an immaculate Freelander with 70,000 km , or so I thought.Found it was running rough. Took it to a land rover specialist who gave me a list of weird and wonderfull things to fix $4000 , no mention of timing, bearing in roller or belt needing doing. Manual said 100,000k for belt. Went to two more mechanics And same thing, inconsistent… Read more
compression, arching on ignition coils, vacuum hoses but still no mention of timing. Guess what 80000 k and it dropped a timing belt , owed five months and told $6,500 to fix. Just not worth it, throw the car away and buy something else. Was it the car or land rover covering up everything and not disclosing times for repairs to the mechanical problems. If I was told to do the timing belt it would of been done, now we have bought a different car. Out of pocket 7k , I didn't believe it was worth fixing after finding out these cars have water pump problems , cast block with aluminium sleeves that move, gearbox issues, viscous coupling issues and so on. How can one car get so much wrong and cost unsuspecting owners enormous amounts of money. the post across the globe are really disturbing.

Great car, will never reach full potential due to lack of aftermarket support – Lacks ground clearance and undercarriage protection particularly to the extremely vulnerable fuel tanks. There are also no bullbars or accessories. The car is great otherwise and shows great potential, its hard to get stuck and easy to recover. The car, as is, is fantastic provided you are looking at 2012 - 2014 diesel models as the expensive… Read more
problems are mostly resolved. As the engine is a ford, its relatively cheap to service PROVIDED you know this fact and communicate it to a mechanic (gets you off the landrover tax in most cases). All other things like suspension and whatnot are easy to learn to service with no prior knowledge of cars and with the right attitude and internet access (speaking from experience changing the LCA's, brakes and installing 30mm spacers for bigger tyres)
Pros Fuel economy is INCREDIBLE for the diesel models, Sydney to Melbourne on 1 tank, same on the way back. Great low RPM torque.
Cons Small boot space but there are fully collapsible back seats. Aftermarket support/accessories. Hard to find reliable and fair mechanics that will touch a Landrover (a mechanic tried to charge me 4.7k to change brakes and lower control arms hence why I learnt to do it myself for around 1k).
Best SUV for on-road and off-road driving – Drives like a car and goes where the Discovery goes. Great value for the price. I bought my FY2013 TD4 auto new. I have done 112,000 kms without any nasty surprises. I have fitted General Grabber AT tyres that give me about 50-55,000kms. All round I am very satisfied. Show details
Great SUV, goes almost everywhere – We purchased our 2014 TD4 2.5 years ago. After replacing the noisy Dunlops with Yokahama Geoloanders, the car is wonderful to drive and very versatile. It's been down some daunting tracks in WA. Great sound system and build quality. I've had zero mechanical issues and I'm up to 130k km. I'd love it if there was a lift kit available in Australia. My dream car since I was 16 is perfect! – When I was 16 I told my dad I would buy this car, he was also a Landrover enthusiast. 20years later I bought a Freelander 1 , 2005 (the 2nd last year of the Freelander 1) and avoided the pitfalls of the earlier similar looking modals with dodgy engines,(usually pre 2004 you can tell the old modal by the non transparent head lights) Love the… Read more
styling, all the extra luxury features, like cruise control, abs brakes, airbags, rear fog lights, rear wiper, side opening boot, leather seats, central cup holders, sunroof, electric windows, Harmon Kardon speakers, double din stereo space (I upgraded mine to an An Alpine Double Din Unit with Navigation and reverse camera), great mags, mean styling, lots of accessories originally made for cars. Mine is Hardtop 2005 TD4 model turbo diesel and is really fast if you want it to be. Also rear seats fold up to double the boot space. So comfortable to drive and still turns heads in 2020.
Best Ever Car! – Bought my Freelander Two diesel in 2013 as a demo with 5000 kms on it. A good deal at $45 000 because the old model was about to be superseded by the new model - the Discovery Sport. I have now clocked up 125 000 kms on the dial. Each weekend I drive to Melbourne from country Victoria and back - a round trip of about 400 kms or 4 hours. This… Read more
car has never missed a beat - a smooth, luxurious drive. It has been the best car I've ever owned. It is expensive to service on average between $700 and $800 - avoid the dealerships & the mark up there. Thinking about getting the Discovery Sport but as of yet not convinced.
expensive services and fix but great for drive – Firstly i have to say this is a really good car for drive, leather seats, big space, good looking and bought as a demo car so its not that expensive. However the services is once a year, unlike the new cars it all one services every two years, it is very expensive to get services in the Land rover Dealer, they cost $800 per services + whatever… Read more
parts they need to fix or replace, however they do provide free car loan for the day.
the insurance is more expensive than other cars as well.
Perfect car can not live without it – Driving experience is fantastic, very safe and extremely comfortable I adore the leather seats , reversing camera and all the electronic gadgets Extremely comfortable to drive with ample space for both driver and passengers Push button start start/stop and folding mirrors Happy also to have a panic button and feel safer in dark car parks due to the car lighting up when leaving or coming back to my car Show details
Too expensive to get it fix – Just spend $3000 fixing my Land Rover and it still not 100 percent fixed so I'm looking for another car instead, the car feels comfortable but you gonna end up spending a lot of money fixing it...even worse because most of them cars are turbo diesel so it's hard to look after them. Love this car! – Purchased my Land Rover Freelander 2 in 2012. It has been a beautiful drive, handles all conditions well and good traction. Great size car and fits car seats in the back without a problem. Love the electric seats and arm rests. The boot fits a large pram with ease. Very economical with fuel. Show details
Freelander TD4 automatic – The freelander 1 is not the best car to drive and it certainly lacks refinement, the interior is pretty basic the leather seats in the HSE are prone to splitting and the Sat Nav works from a cd put into the radio system and is a complete waste of time. The car is possibly the worse and most unreliable car I have ever had with electrical problems… Read more
which include the electric windows and the radio cutting out intermittently. The car leaked diesel every time it started from cold had a small oil leak was pretty unresponsive and lack luster for the first 5 minutes from cold was not good at speeds over 60mph and had sensor and master air flow problems. It often threw out black smoke . I had this car from October until January during that time it leaked so much diesel onto the block paving I still can't get it out, and on top of all that the TD4 HSE is £500 per year road taxi would advise anyone to think twice before buying a freeekander 1 you would be far better buying an Hyundai Tucson, Santa Fe or Kia Sportage all of which are far more reliable than the freelander.

Great, versatile and reliable – Have had my 2013 FL2 HSE for 15 months. Now done 65k. Really impressed with its off road capability; terrific ground clearance and ability for a "softroader". With the SD4, she tows our 16ft van with ease and is great to drive around the city. Very comfortable on long drives too. Exceeded expectations, with good reliability and build quality. Show details
Great Vehicle – Bought our Freelander 2nd hand and couldn't be happier. Has 70k and does mostly rural driving-its previous life was a well maintained city car. Air Con is fantastic, seats are very comfortable, driving position is great and economy is good. Plenty of room inside and the car like handling means it is a good replacement for previous Outback. Chose my first 4WD carefully and would buy another LR2 if they still made em – My TD4 HSE is nine years old and I've never had a fault to report. About 2 years after I bought it LR recalled all FL2s to replace a wire in the heat exchanger under wty - and that's all. Still get better than 7l/100km, mixed use - town 15% and open road 85%. No squeaks or rattles. I travel low mileage and yes, the car has only done 24k. But… Read more
then the new Falcon I had previously suffered one failed power window, a vital pulley in the engine broke up taking out the power steering and engine cooling, then the exhaust system began leaking and all within the first 20k. This 4WD drives like a car. Service costs are $500, once a year. As far as I'm concerned if this car sees me out I'll be quite happy. Great choice.
Nice...But expensive – Hard to fault this vehicle as a great all rounder except perhaps in terms of price. The engine deliver good old diesel nunga-nunga levels of noise and torque. Construction is brick sh-t house. Would have been nice to be getting a few more MPG and to have a bigger boot (ala Ford Territory) but overall this is a gem. Big enough to get the job done,… Read more
compact enough for the city, nice understated styling inside and out. Why oh why they had to replace the F2 I don't know other than pandering to the urban stylo market.
2013 SD4 SE FL2 – I bought this 2013 model during Dec 2015 and haven't looked back since. The best thing I like about this car is the seat comfort. Long drives are easy and more comfortable. The average mileage is around 9.6L/100km but during long drives forks out around 7L/100km. The sound system and the interiors are really good. The updated interiors are really… Read more
good and I have no complaints. The luggage room is a minus but this is supposed to be a mini SUV so I knew it would not be enough from the time I bough it. It has been extremely reliable (Started very smoothly as usual even when I started it after 1 and half months long vacation and we were in a midst of a cold wave in Sydney). But I do expect the running costs to be high (600$ just for a regular service) and with high insurance costs. But overall its worth it and an excellent car.
A pleasure to drive – I was a bit worried about reliability but so far the car has been faultless. Copes with whatever is asked of it. Have been on two major trips around Australia including some off road driving and it's handled everything without effort - very relaxing to drive long distances. Fuel economy around town is about 10 L/100k and around 7.0 L/100k touring.… Read more
It would be nice to have a bit more luggage room - particularly vertically, as I can't fit my bike in the back upright as I could with my previous CRV but otherwise no complaints!
Love this car – The X3 Beemer is gone, and while my Freelander does not have the power or fuel economy of the TD X3, it is more refined, comfortable, quiet, and can you believe, better engineered! The sound system, seats, mirrors, driving position, air con, vents, everything. . . .its all better. Even the locking mechanism, the spare tyre location, glove box,… Read more
visors, floor mats, they did not miss a thing. My wife has the Audi Q3 and prefers to drive my Freelander. Very happy camper. (well. . .we don't camp, we prefer a hotel, but you get the picture)
no problems to date – We have a 2002 v6 freelander es hardtop, purchased 9 years ago. It has 210,000klms. on the clock and to date have only changed a brake pedal switch worth $30 in the last 9 years. Previous to this had a v8 discovery for 11 years and only replaced a water pump, Personally i would not buy anything else. Having said that: It comes down to how hard you push your vehicle. You push anything hard it will break down . Show details
fantastic car – I brought a 2015 Land Rover Free lander for my wife. Not much to say, it tows the jet ski very well, great in the sand and mud, good fuel economy. The sound system and sat nave are very good and easy to operate. Yes servicing is expensive but in the long run its cheap to know the car will not let you down. The gear box is very smooth going up and down,a bit noisy on the road compared to its big brother Discovery 4. Show details

I have 2002 landrover freelander v6 es. I have not had no problems with my girl ol black bess – Great driving experience easy handling full leather heated seats easy to use dash plenty room in front and excellent room once seats are folded in the back. A bit of a mixed bag – My wife bought a 2001 v6 auto freelander from a family member. Previously only used on short trips, we live in regional Vic and the thermostat went followed by the fuel pump. In my experience I have found that Brit cars are built of solid materials but are put together too quickly or just badly. (This is born out by a recent T.V. series where… Read more
various Brit cars were rebuilt and found to be very good). This car is exceptional off road (for it's type) but needs a little more power for the highway. Acceleration is acceptable but not O/S for a v6. (Very heavy in its class, check comparable weights). Astheticaly it needs wider tyres and a better grille. Seats need to go further back and the wagon space needs just a little more. Column and dash controls haven't been well thought out. Economy is acceptable (good when you consider its heavier weight). Ride and handling are good for its type but the power steering seems a little heavy at very low speeds. It is over engineered and could have been improved upon during design. Part of the problem is that it has changed owners several times (Jag/Rover, Ford, BMW and now Tata. This has caused a mish mash of components. Runs better on 95 or higher octane.
The worst car I've ever owned!!! – I have owned a MY02 LAND ROVER FREELANDER ES (4x4) 3D SOFTBACK 5 SP AUTOMATIC STEPTRONIC 2.5L since 2010, and have never had a service bill less than $800! The list of grievances is long; The onboard computer died needing a replacement shipping from South Africa for about $1,000; The timing belt needs replacing (meaning a complete engine… Read more
overhaul) every 100,000 Kms (60,000 Mi) at a cost in excess of $2,500; The front and rear dif mounts have both snapped twice - about $800 to replace each time; The muffler cracked; The electric window motors have gone in each window and were about $300 each motor; The 2/4 and 2/5 brake solenoids have gone and are housed in the transmission and will be $5,500 plus to replace. This means the car only drives in "limp" mode (no torque) and "F" & "4" flash on the gear display; The Cruise Control has just died swell. Cosmetically the upholstery on the seats wore out within the first 2 years; The "leather" gear shift lever cover flaked; The lining of the soft top (the marketing people called a soft back" all came away and left black flakes raining from the roof all the time (great on your white shirt); The side 'clear' plastic removable windows on the "soft back" became crazed/fogged and then eventually cracked with the sun allowing water in. The Air-conditioner needs regaling every year and performs dismally. All this for a car that has only done 135,000 Kms (84,000 Mi). This car is definitely the worst car I've ever owned and Land Rover should be apologise to the public for releasing such a lemon. I would even go as far as to say it warrants a class action. Avoid Land Rover at all costs!!!!!
The only car I've driven 500km, unloaded, and then felt like going for a drive! – (We love it!) I have a base model Freelander2 TD4 with auto transmission, purchased new in 2011, 60,000km. I got the auto because of its off-road capabilities - which was also why I chose this car over all the other AWDs. 110kw/420nm means 'low power/high torque' - which makes for very pleasant cruising and effortless (up to 2000kg braked)… Read more · 1
towing. On-road it is 'car-like'; on-gravel it is fast/forgiving/remarkably comfy; off-road it is limited only by clearance. I've had it stuck three times, always with 'clearance' being the limiter. Mostly, it 'simply walks through'. Testers describe the off-road performance as 'surprising' and 'genuine'. Highway, wife (driving) said, "60kph feels so slow!" "Darling, you're doing 120kph in a 110kph zone..." "That's what I mean!" The grandkids love the rear-window view; much better than the fashionista Evoque. ('Evoque - be seen in; Freelander - see out of!') No warranty work has been needed. One auto-wind rear window briefly stopped 'auto' part of wind; then fixed itself.
Boot space is a little limited for four; for two, and carrying a spare-spare and hand-winch and camping gear, rear seat down - fine. I frequently carry five adults; rear leg-room/head-room/visibility is good (180cm - comfortable). Highway overtaking 'needs planning' compared to, say, a modern petrol V8 - but 'out West' I've overtaken road-trains with two wheels on the gravel, final overtaking speed ~170kph, and felt safe. It is deceptively fast: 'cruise-control equals 'cop-control'.
Real-world fuel consumption is ~9L/100km, give or take a bit. (The manual gets ~6.6). Pirelli Scorpion Zeros improve both on- and off-road performance (found grip whilst sliding sideways downhill on clay).
The Land Rover genuine towbar is overpriced and has a 40mm box; get an ARB for half the price, equally good, and a far more interchangeable 50mm box.
I can't say how much we love this car! Versatile, genuine off-road capability, wonderfully comfy for long trips. Nothing much;
Expensive to Maintain - Sell before warranty expires – My 2010 TD4 SE has now done 90,000km so this is a review based on extensive driving, mostly through the city with the occasional trip up or down the coast (we live in Sydney). Issues we've had so far include Broken Turbo hose @ 40,000km - Under warranty thankfully. Brake pads replaced @ 40,000 km and 80,000km - A few hundred each time. … Read more
Front brake discs replaced at 60,000km - $1000.
Back one's have needed replacement since 60,000km but we're saving up to do it - another $1000.
New Tyres @ 45,000km and 80,000km (Tyres are $350-$400 each), they are an unusual size and load/speed rating.
Air Con started rattling @ 80,000km. Dealer advised that it needs a another compressor - $3800 (and that's only for refurbishment, not a new one).
Servicing - between $600-$1000 every time, been serviced 9 times.
Car Key - battery went flat after 3 years. Can't replace battery, need new key - $120 (we are now just using the spare).
If you own one I suggest getting rid of it before the warranty expires or it hits 80,000km.
If you add up the above it comes to $16,000 of mainteance in 4 years, or to put it another way it costs 8% of the purchase price per year to maintain.
Other annoyances
Gearbox - Won't shift to lowest gear when going downhill at the speed limit, it just hangs in 3rd or 4th at 2,500rpm. You have to put your foot down and go 60-70kph for it to shift into 5th, then slow back down to the speed limit (or force it into 5th via sportshift mode).
Radio controls on steering wheel - don't allow you to flick between preset stations, only seek back and forth.
Aerial - We live in the Hills District and the radio drops out when driving around the neighbourhood. Doesn't take much tree cover to cause this.
Bluetooth not std - Competitor models at the time had this as standard.
No GPS - see above.
Infotainment - About the same as what you'd get on a base model Hyundai Getz.
Overall 6/10
Tyres, brakes and air con are the biggest spend items on maintenance. The brakes aren't very good, I think they are undersized for the car and the tyres are very expensive.
Note for readers, don't get a European SUV and especially don't buy British made. Go far a Japanese manufacturer, you get better kit, lower maintenance costs, fewer problems, and better resale
Quality at it's worst – I bought a 2002 Freelander TD4 partly hoping that my previous experience with a Land Rover Discovery would not be repeated. BMW 2Lt diesel engine, and BMW were good about it. They immediately air freighted another complete motor out from Germany with instructions that the destroyed motor be returned back to Germany in the crate. But that was just the first of many costly problems. We were returning from Sydney and had reached Neranderra in country NSW when the harmonic balancer (bottom pulley on the front of the engine) disintegrated. We had to have the vehicle brought all the way back to Adelaide on a tray top truck. I used bio diesel once....just as many other diesel engine vehicles do and it destroyed the fuel system, another $1,400. The crank angle sensor had to be replaced and numerous other things. The body construction was poor with panel margins that let in wind and water. The rear tailgate latch just broke off one day!!! Had to replace two water pumps....and on and on...all in less than 100,000 Kms.
I should have known, I had a very bad run previously with a Discovery and I should have known better than to jump into another Land Rover but, I thought 'Surely lightning can't strike in the same place twice' ...but it did!
I don't know quite how the English motor industry has managed to go from the best in the world to the worst, but it has. I will not deviate from Japanese cars now. At least you can leave home in one and know it will get you back again. I have a 2004 Honda Civic hatch that has covered 263,520 Kms and nothing has ever broken down on it. The only thing I have had to replace due to failure was the battery, but I did get almost 10 years out of the one Honda supplied. I recently thought about buying a new Honda Civic hatch until I found out they are now made in Swindon in England!!!! On learning that, I thought no way, I will never have anything to do with another vehicle built in England!

decent control is great amongst the multitude of systems it uses, easy to drive on and off road and very comfortable. the switches and dials are well placed, easy to access and operate. The front seat armrests are a nice touch. This car drives beautifully around town and out on the open road, I average 8 – 8.5 L/100 klms around town which is where most of the driving takes place while out on the open highway it will return low 7L/100. So far I have driven just over 6000klm and there have been no faults with the vehicle. I did purchase the protection package for paint, leather and carpe protection but I would never do that again. I feel it’s a waste of money.
All in all I would recommend this type of SUV as a high quality, well built and economical car to own. Seating position, quality of build. Fuel economy. Great looking SUV Nothing to add except I would not waste my money on the paint, leather & carpet protection package
