A frustrating experience with an overrated mattress So you have issues with fatigue and/or insomnia and/or you really value high quality sleep, so… Read more

you do a bunch of research on mattresses, maybe come across Karl's comments on Reddit, settle on hybrid latex mattresses and conclude that you can justify buying an extremely expensive mattress from Ausbeds.

I bought the Ausbeds King Single Cloud 6 online. I accept that I did not test it in person first, and my expectations may have been too high, but the overall experience has been disappointing. I should also acknowledge that I don't remember the exact timeline of everything, given there have been issues since December last year and I don't keep track of this stuff in a journal

The first issue was delivery. I was told the mattress would arrive in about a fortnight, so I took time off and waited all day. Nothing arrived. After several attempts to contact them, I was told it had never actually been scheduled for delivery because they did not have enough stock. I was not notified and had to wait over a month.

When it finally arrived, the pillow I ordered with it was missing because it was still out of stock. I was given the opportunity to cancel the pillow order but kept it. Months later, after I followed up, I was told the pillow was available but nobody had sent it to me despite how long I had been waiting for it. I cancelled the order for it.

The bed base also worried me. As I set it up, I sat on the edge briefly, and heard a loud crunch. I weigh around 65 kg, so that was surprising, especially given the claims about sturdy slats. The slats are bizarrely hidden under fabric, so I could not even see what broke or how bad it was. I'm deeply skeptical about the quality of this base.

The mattress itself is good, but not amazing. It does not feel like “sleeping on a cloud.” It feels like a decent medium-firm mattress with good pressure relief for side sleeping. The temperature regulation is far better than my old Sleeping Duck, and I would strongly avoid memory foam mattresses after that experience. But for $2,710, I do not think it feels dramatically better than much cheaper beds.

After a few months, I asked about softer springs. Their live chat was again basically useless due to being unmanned and nobody ever checking messages left on it, so I called a few days later. I was told the springs could be delivered in about a fortnight. On the delivery day, after I had again taken time off, nothing arrived again. Apparently no order had even been made.

Overall, Ausbeds markets itself as a down-to-earth premium mattress company, but my experience felt more like dealing with a disorganised small business charging a large premium. You can buy a latex hybrid Peace Lily mattress for around half the price or less. Peace Lily may have worse reviews, but I am not convinced the price gap is justified.

Part of Ausbeds’ value proposition is the 10-year ability to replace parts, but given the service issues, the fact that they are not a large mattress company and the plausible reality of a major recession in the next decade, I am not sure how much confidence to place in that promise.

To be fair, everyone I spoke to seemed nice. I do not think they are malicious. I just think the product is overpriced and the business feels unprofessional. I will see how the soft springs feel before deciding whether to return the mattress and bed.

After trialing another brand of latex mattress and not suiting us, we came across AusBeds (online) and went through the mattress selection process to… Read more

get an idea of what mattress would suit both our needs. Cloud (medium) was the result. I called up the store and spoke with both Dani and Nicky on several occasions to get further assistance in dialing-in the right mattress configuration, before purchasing. They both we very understanding and helpful in answering all of my questions and in working out a way of delivery as I am not located in a delivery zone, but they made it happen, so we were very happy. We've had it for a month and haven't needed to change the comfort setting as yet. The mattress is so very comfortable and supportive for us both, that it helps us both get to sleep in no time at all. The bonus!....because it allows customisation in comfort layers, the mattress can be made a little softer or firmer when you require. Thanks again AusBeds! You made the whole shopping online experience like we were in the showroom.

I’m so glad I found Ausbeds. My wife and I needed a new mattress and we’ve have never had great luck in the past buying one which suits us both. … Read more

We’d got to the stage where we didn’t even know what we needed to be comfortable and going to bedding shops didn’t seem to help as you never know how each will feel after a night’s sleeping nor how the bed will feel in a couple of year’s time. Then I stumbled across Karl’s posts on Reddit and Whirlpool – you can find links on the Ausbeds homepage. All of a sudden it became so much clearer about what had gone wrong for us in the past. There is a wealth of knowledge there if you are that way inclined. I’m in Brisbane (and delivery was easy) but if I was in Sydney I would now recommend skip the details and just go their showrooms, try the beds and get the team’s advice on the best mattress for you. For us, we have started with a medium Cooper for the guest room and it’s been great being able to adjust the feel to find what works for each of us as well as being just much more comfortable than what it replaced. We’re waiting till we get to Sydney to try out the Aurora and Cloud before we decide on what we’ll choose for our main bed. And the great thing is that it’s also easy to upgrade the Cooper if we choose to.
