My partner bought a bike from 99 bikes with NUTT brakes in March 2025. One of the brakes stopped working and we just found out some NUTT brakes need to be bled every 4 months or so which is really annoying to have to take your bike in every 4 months for a service. The other option is to buy Shimano brakes if you dont want to be continually taking… Read more
your bike back to them. The mechanic told us that since they don't make the bike there isn't much they can do for us as its the manufacturer thats to blame and the manufacturer rarely approves warranty replacement and even if they did there is a chance you would just end up with the same issue again. So its pretty crap for the customer of these $2000+ bikes when 4 months after purchase you need to pay for an upgrade for it to function how you would expect it to.
Of course when buying they dont tell you Nutt brakes are a bit notorious and have even been recalled by some bike companies as this issue has been recognised as potentially dangerous (https://www.productsafety.gov.au/search-consumer-product-recalls/avanti-malvern-star-my-2021-24-scott-my-2022-24-bicycles) & (https://www.sheppardcycles.com/sheppard-cycles-product-recall-nz). In my opinon this is a defective product but 99 say that by offering bleeding when needed they are complying with ACL but I consider this not fit for purpose and not of an acceptable quality.
They tell me coming back for a bleed every 4 months is within the NUTT spec despite the product recall saying: "Why the product is recalled: These Bicycles have been recalled because the (‘NUTT’ branded) brakes require frequent servicing to perform optimally. Failure to service these brakes may result in a loss of braking power, which may result in a loss of control of the bicycle and cause an injury." If I was 99 bikes I would swap out a potentially faulty part which costs $35 each, before selling customers a $2000 bike but I guess they prefer just to let people get this issue on their new bike and then offer them option of purchasing the upgrade. As someone that has run their own business it blows my mind a bit that they are OK trashing their reputation by selling sub-optimal bikes then expecting the customer to upgrade. The attitude that because we aren't the manufacturer we can't do much is not good customer service. Also if a customer was injured or killed due to the faulty brake its not great for repeat business either.
I recommend anyone else with the NUTT brake issue to submit it to Product Safety Australia so they can issue another recall as it seems 99 Bikes wont do a recall unless it comes from the government or the distributor.
I guess were lucky and not like Keith another reviewer below who was quoted $500-$700 to fix the NUTT issue.
Booked in for $89 basic service on a second hand bike I had bought for my son - just wanted the brakes and gears checked and tuned to save me the time of doing it. Was told that service would cost around $400 as chain, cables and suspension needed to be replaced after looking at the bike for 1 minute. There is nothing wrong with the chain or… Read more
cables and the "rust" on the suspension is very minor surface rust which is meaningless. The chain just had fallen off the cog and the cables are fine - I have now fixed the bike myself and did not need any new parts. Either they were busy and didnt want to do the job, despite it being booked in or they add extras to get more money in (rip-off).

Great service! – I went to 99 Bikes Marion to buy my child’s first bike and was so impressed with the service. A lovely man named James was so friendly and helpful. It made the process fun and easy, invaluable given I had my little one with me. He even assembled the bike and helped me take it to the car. His colleague Richard was hilarious too, giving us great tips on where to try out the new wheels. A great experience all around. Thanks guys. Show details · 1

High service quote for road bike – Went in for an issue with gear change. The young mechanic said gear changing issue required 2 new levers costing $300.I asked if lever could be flushed out and his reply was that levers were not servicable,New chain and rear cog I agreed needed replacing. Than when he said both my chainrings needed replacing ,even though one of them was replaced 3… Read more
years I thought maybe go to another bike shop for their quote.
Took bike to International Cycles Stephny and he flushed out lever with no need to replace levers. This is what I asked mechanic at 99 bikes to do and he said could not be done. Lesson learnt, get another quote done by another bike shop before commuting for fix.

They do ok – I always feel a bit underwhelmed when I leave my bike with 99 whole the setup with the workshop and contact is very good, I always feel a bit let down, this time after I got my gear switch replaced the dropper switch and the brake weren’t positioned and fastened, I rode to work this morning after the repair and was a bit annoyed it felt dangerous to ride. much abused and ignored it for 8 years, so it would not have been an easy job. I now feel like I’ve got a brand-new bike and am motivated to maintain it.
I feel I got a great deal because he took the time to explain why things needed fixing. I could also tell that he looked for opportunities to save me money wherever possible. I’m not a local, I’m just staying in the area this week, but I’ll be sure to return to your store for any future work. I can't recommend this guy enough.

Replaced a broken part that was my fault – I damaged my brand new bike loading it onto my car rack. Kerrianne organised for one of the mechanics to replace the broken part while I waited. I pointed out the fact that it was my stuff up but it didn't matter to Kerrianne or the 99 Bikes team. The service was great prior to this, Kerrianne was more than helpful in picking out new bikes for our two kids. Fixing my stuff up was the cherry on top. Show details · 1
