Baby Lock BLCS-2 Coverstitch Questions & Answers
Have just got my BLCS2 it came with a binder attachment but no instructions on how to use it. I’ve never owned a coverstitch before and don’t know where to begin. How many needles do I use, do I need to change settings? I’ve tried looking on YouTube without any luck. Due to COVID lockdown I can’t take any lessons. Amy help and guidance would be so appreciated! Tina
Hello TinaO. I used two needles. Left and centre. So a narrow cover stitch. Did not need to alter anything but may depend on the fabric. My binder has instructions on how wide to cut binding strip. It took a lot of practice. There are sites online if you keep searching on how to use a knit binder. Some binders seem to work best on woven fabrics.
Hi All, Is the Babylock specifically for stretch fabrics? I want a machine for both stretch and non stretch, quilting and normal sewing etc? Thanks in advance LynnG
Hi Lynn, The machine stitches every fabric I’ve thrown at it! She’s a few years old now & done many kilometres & is still as good as new. Just cover stitched rain coat fabric & all good. Just make sure you use good quality thread & change needles, don’t let them get burred, bent or blunt. I just love her!! Cheers.
Thankyou Gijam Also is thickness a problem ie binding a quilt etc? Thankyou
I am having real trouble hemming a modal dress I am taking up for a friend. The looper thread seems to be a tangled mess on the back. Have changed the needles to new stretch in a smaller size, re-threaded and adjusted the tensions numerous ways! Does it need a service? Or is modal the issue? Any tips appreciated
can you tell me if babylock coverstitch machines work well with spandex? I have tried another coverstitch machine, Janome 900 cpx and I have tried everything possible and it still skips and breaks stitches when coverstitching over a serged seam. thank you
Hi Lisa, The Babylock works brilliantly on Spandex, Lycra, light weight Jersey & all stretch fabrics. I mainly sew stretch fabric & make a lot of swimwear, it’s a dream to use & stiches perfectly, I’ve had it for a few years now & she purrs along!! I wouldn’t be without it :) Cheers & happy sewing!!
Thank you so much!
Can someone please help me as I can't find any info anywhere. If I purchase a Babylock Coverstitch BLCS2, what do I actually get in the box? Obviously the machine and the pedal but what else comes with it? Thank you
Hi, It comes with, instruction manual, Guide fixing screws for table, lint brush/needle insert tool, package of assorted needles, Allen screwdriver, tweezers, needle threader, chain/coverstitch needle screw. Accessory adapter, looper threading tool, screwdriver, machine cover, thread nets, spool caps, sponge discs & cone holders. Mine also came with a clear foot, a pintuck foot and a fabric guide, these are optional extras but I got them in the deal.
Hope this helps,
Cheers
Can this machine do cover stitching on canvas and heavy duty upholstery fabrics and heavy denim?
Hi Gabby, To be honest, the heaviest fabric I have sewn is denim, a 3 thickness seam, with no trouble. I haven’t sewn upholstery fabric but have sewn light canvas for aprons. Maybe contact the ladies at Sewco in QLD, they are very knowledgeable & could probably help you. Sorry I’m not much help in this matter.
Cheers.
Hi Gijam,
I have just wasted 2 days on another brand of coverstitch machine and I'm ready to use it as a boat anchor! All I was doing was T-shirts for my grandsons and it wouldn't even do a hem! My question is where in Qld did you buy your Babylock Coverstitch machine as I live in SE Qld and have decided to buy one. If it is as good as my quite old Eclipse it will be an investment.
Thanks, Val.
Hi Val, I bought mine from Sewco online, the ladies were absolutely lovely and as I wasn't able to have the lessons, any questions were answered over the phone. The great thing is that my machine has been totally trouble free and stitching perfectly for a few years now. I'm still very happy with my machine and the place of purchase!
Happy sewing!
Cheers.

Hi, I have had my coverstitch machine for 12 months & only ever done hems on it & was wanting to know what else I can do on it? I remember the lady at the fair showed me other things but as time has passed I can't remember how to do them. Is there any tutorials on using the blcs machine? Thanks! Nelle
Hi Nelle, I haven't actually looked to see, I just bought mine online without any demo. It is a dedicated cover stitch machine, however it is great for doing other creative things. I love seams on swimwear & stretch fabric stitched wrong side out!!, joining fabric, hems, necklines etc. The chain stitch is decorative, running four different coloured threads to coordinate with your fabric makes for a cool look.
I use "Bubba" on nearly every garment I create!! I must admit, I have several other machines in tow, all performing different duties!!
Cheers
Hi Nelle, I would recommend paying for a lesson with your local baby lock shop (they should be trained by baby lock and have a folder full of examples done with all the accessories). There are so many accessories you can get! I've got a bias binder, belt loop folder, single hemmer & knit binder. Love using all of them. external link -list of the accessories with pictures
external link -this is a knit binder video, one of my favourite accessories for the coverstitch
Hope this helps!
Cheers!
Thank you Gijam & clutchgirl for your help. My nearest babylock dealer is about 1 1/2 hours away so will have to try and make appointment to go there for a lesson. My machine came with the binder so will definately watch that video...Nelle
I hear very good things about the Babylock. How much did it cost and is the product backed up with lessons and/or someone who can answer all the inane questions which arise when you take it home and use it for the first time? Like, "Where's the on/off button? Duh!"
Hi Maggie, can't totally remember the price without going through my Visa statements! somewhere around the $2,200 mark from memory. I bought mine online from QLD and if I lived there lessons were available. I had no problems with contacting them and the girls were only to pleased to help. I've never really needed to ask much, as the machine isn't at all complicated. I've been using it for over a year now and it's never missed a beat, such a great buy, best investment in my sewing room!
Cheers.
