My experience with bupa pet insurance was very disappointing, they don’t give customers very much options, basically forces people into having an excess applied to their policy because they can’t afford the high premiums. I submitted a few small claims, and have virtually received nothing after the excess gets deducted. For these insurance… Read more
companies, it’s profit Thats all they care about they don’t care about customers that keep them in business. I will never give this company my business again. Very disappointed
Bupa has one of the best customer service among the pet insurance companies. We've been with bupa almost for 1.5 years, and they've been great, quick with the claim. 24/7 live vet is a huge plus. Show details
Bupa is by far the best pet insurance that I have dealt with..They have helped me out numerous times & the staff are friendly & helpful. I appreciate what they have done for me and i am happy to be their customer☑️ Thanks Bupa Pet Insurance☑️ Show details
Not worth the paper it is written on. Was with rspca for years and they are amazing Show details
Rome was the best on the phone and I just want to say how much me and my dogs loves bupa. They are always patient, caring and kind. I wouldn’t recommend enough.
Katrina was very patient in answering my questions and provided further clarification on my furbabies insurances. Show details
Not flexible – The policy was comprehensive and covered most aspects for both of our dogs when we made our first claim after four years. However, due to the rising cost of living, we had to cancel. Since our dogs are now 13 years old and past the 7-year threshold, we weren’t able to downgrade to a more affordable plan. Unfortunately, once a dog turns 8, finding… Read more
alternative insurance is nearly impossible.
Cancelling was our only choice. It’s disappointing that Bupa couldn’t offer any flexibility, as they’ve now lost $7,000 a year from us. Had they been more accommodating with their premiums, we would have continued with the policy. That said, at least now we can redirect that money elsewhere instead of paying for something without tangible benefits. We also had a 10% discount for having human extras cover, which I’ll likely be cancelling as well.
We did face one issue with a claim that was initially rejected. The vet lodged it before receiving the full histology report, so it was assessed as a simple skin condition when, in reality, it was a cancerous cyst. I appealed, and after reassessment, the claim was approved. Still, I find it baffling that a cancerous tumor could have been misclassified as a skin issue—any layman could have looked it up and understood the difference.
Additionally, the per-condition excess is unreasonable, and their delay in adopting gap-only payments was frustrating. It’s also disappointing that dental care isn’t included in the Ultimate package by default. A top-tier plan should cover this without requiring it as an optional extra. At the very least, they could offer a free dental cleaning every other year for customers who haven’t made a single claim!

Extremely reliable – Bupa has always been consistently good when it comes to their customer service. Wait times are low and the quality of help is high. Today I spoke to Kai who went above and beyond to understand and then help me with my needs today. straightforward process giving me the ability to place my focus elsewhere. Highly recommend BUPA, I won’t be leaving anytime soon.
Change the level of Pet Insurance cover – Eka, the person with whom I liaised at BUPA Pet Insurances, was extremely informative, patient and helpful. Unfortunately, however, she could not downgrade my cat's level of cover because my cat is too old. However, she has assured me that as a goodwill gesture I will receive a 25% discount on my cat's level of cover.
Worst pet insurance – Bupa pet insurance is the worst. You have to pay $200 excess on every claim. Therefore having pet insurance and claiming back will never happen, unless what your claiming for is over $200. Skin problems, eys etc are under $200! I don't recommend them and will cancel my policy and also my health insurance. Show details
The worst – I was at the ultimate Level for my dog which was expensive anyway but it’s my dog … 140 dollars a month… I get a tax invoice today in regards to my new yearly premium…195 dollars !!! Why?? Because my dog had his teeth cleaned and regular removal of a couple of teeth… due to the fact that he is over 9 I wanted to drop to basic as this was… Read more
ridiculous and caring for your pet is not in their books!!! I was NOT ALLOWED to drop to basic!!! Absolutely the worst pet insurance !!! I cancelled and joined another insurance company…. I was on the phone for 2 hours trying to do this!!! Absolutely disgusting… you look after your pet and you are penalised
This is the most expensive health cover - think twice – I have been a loyal Bupa Pet client for our beloved Beagle for over 5 years. In that time we made our annual visit to the vet for a checkup, vaccines and dental clean up. Nothing unusual just the normal routine. The fees kept going up each year with out any justification apart from the standard line. Trying to speak to anyone is nearly impossible… Read more
and your messages/emails are replied by random and different people each time. Overall my experience has been sub-standard given how much i paid per month (over $250 per month) which was more than what i pay per year for my own Private health insurance. They do not care about you, your pet or anything you bring up. Its purely transactional and im sure there are other cheaper options if you are looking for private health insurance for your older dog. I will never use Bupa insurance ever (for humans or pets)

The worst decision – "This is the worst decision I've made in my 12 years in Australia. I've consistently purchased the most expensive Bupa pet insurance with a $20,000 AUD limit and an 80% reimbursement rate. I've never used it before, but last week, my 9 year old dog had surgery for a mammary tumor costing $5,500 AUD. Today, I received an email stating they will… Read more
only reimburse $500 AUD, claiming it falls under 'skin benefits' with a limit of $500. Breast tumor surgery categorized as a skin issue? I find it hard to believe Bupa would engage with fair trading. I hope more people see this review. Do not consider Bupa."

worst experience i've ever had! – My dogs policy was cancelled due to an issue with an old email. Nothing came in the mail so only found out by accident. The process of renewing the policies took an hour and went through multiple people. the process they have is completely ridiculous!!!!!
Ridiculous claims team – Took my pet in to the vet and submitted my first claim after 2 years. Said the illness was pre-exisiting for cat-flu through a statement made on A VIRTUAL VET ASSESSMENT, took him for a vet appointment the next day for a physical exam, the virtual assessment results were confirmed to be incorrect finding a bone lodged in the throat of the cat.… Read more
BUPA really needs to look into the "virtual" vs physical assessments correctly and READ THE ACTUAL CLINICAL NOTES.
Don’t even bother, save your money – Was with Bupa for 2 years with no claim previously made. The first claim we recently made was rejected as our pet was diagnosed for the first time with allergies which Bupa stated was preexisting due to previous ear infection as well another issue in the same claim they stated was preexisting that was never even diagnosed or treated previously.… Read more
Bupa will manipulate any claim to make it preexisting so they do not have to pay. We did not waste our time cancelling our insurance with them, but boy was it a waste of money.
Worst Pet Insurance – Purpose of insurance is to have the protection in case something unfortunate happens to your pet, and Bupa is definitely a player who is solely in the market to profit, mislead and scam from its customers. We signed up for Bupa Pet Insurance when our dog was 8 weeks old and we found out last year at 2 years old he has skin/food allergies. After… Read more
our first claim, all subsequent claims have apparently reached the annual sub-limits of the policy - skin sub-limit of $500 (where we had to spend around $10k a year for his treatments last year) plus because of the single condition sub-limit of $200. Of course they're treating our potential lifelong issue a "single condition", so we're given really no peace of mind financially with our policy with Bupa. We've also had processing errors with our claims so make sure you check your correspondence and call them up to fix them. Other providers dont have such sublimits for the equivalent plan but since it is now a pre-existing condition for our dog, we can't even change to a better provider. We're stuck with a scammer, and I hope no one else makes the same mistake.
Bupa split claim for a single vet visit for the one problem – Really disappointed and surprised that Bupa decided unilaterally to split our single claim of $248 for our dog's recent vet visit. They then decided to apply excess of $100 to each of the seperate claim amounts and paying us only $6.56. This appears to be a blatant attempt to minimise their payout. The visit to the vet was the one problem, our… Read more
dog coughing which would then cause him to vomit. How about next time I go to the doctor for treatment of the flu, and they bill me seperate amounts for treatment of my runny nose, sore throat and fever, for which Bupa's health insurance then applies it's excess to each bill amount.
Very disappointed, and I am seriously thinking of dropping Bupa for my family's health insurance and they've most definitely lost me for our pet insurance.
Stay away from them – I have been contributed to the policy for over 2 years and I have made my first claim since early of March. They have made so many excuses of not paying you back and I have been paid for this policy approximately over $1500 within these two years. I have canceled the insurance eventually. Wasted so much on Bupa already. They are good at words but just not pay you back a cent. Show details
Ridiculous pricing with no sense of loyalty – Had my insurance with these guys for a while and also have Health Insurance which is awesome but this part of their insurance not so much. They then said oh well Ultimate Cover has changed since you took it out so now it’s more…ummmm no that’s not how any other insurance works - you don’t get charged the same as new customers when you try to edit your policy! I just added Extras to my Gold Health…they don’t just start charging me as a new Gold Customer paying even more plus my extras…what’s the point in being a Customer?

New policy - First claim experience – After researching and reading reviews, I decided to take a leap and join Bupa. My first claim for routine care was accepted and paid in a couple of days, so off to a good start. Pet insurance can be very confusing so do your research and know what you are paying for. I picked Bupa the price was very competitive and I have always had a positive experience with the company. Pet insurance gives me peace of mind. Thank you. Show details · 1
SCAM!! Do not cover anything – OMG I wish I had read some of the other reviews on here, because they are all so right! Every claim I made they have found an excuse for not paying – Bupa Pet insurance is one of the biggest scam for pet insurance. I have been with them for 1 year. time after explaining the situation line would cut off.It was a direct line to Sydney.Spoke to 4 different people.Told by last Gentlemen I spoke to not approved. Asked if I hadn’t called would I have received a response. Luckily I didn’t cancel existing Woolworths Pet Insurance. Bupa told me that I wasn’t approved.I asked why? Gentlemen asked if I have an existing Pet Insurance which I replied yes,but looking to change.Told I would have to cancel existing policy before applying with them. Why would I cancel prior to knowing I can get another Insurance cover first? Mind you I did take screenshot of reference and start date which was confirmed and a welcome pack I will receive shortly. If I didn’t call them to follow up,what would I think I was covered? It clearly shows a Start date and commencement date. A welcome pack would be coming in the mail. I thought it was unusual not to receive an email. Anyway, sent a message to them via messenger and it was live communication which dropped out as well during the conversation . Will now go with Pet Insurance Australia after reading all the reviews. I honestly thought I’d ignore the reviews with Bupa Pet Ins after being a current health member with them for 45 years plus and my family. Seriously dumbfounded. Worst communication I’ve ever received by any company in a long time. Disappointed beyond belief.

waste of money – I wish I had read some of these reviews before I spent the money. I took BUPA pet insurance out because i have health insurance with them. Waste of money as when I needed them - for surgery for an undescended testicle I was unable to claim because of the very very fine print. With the benefit of hindsight - should have saved the money and it would have paid for this surgery. Will definitely not be renewing. Show details

Avoid BUPA. Waste. Scam – You can guarantee that, when the chips are down and you think you can rely on the pet insurance you took out just in case, well you can guarantee you will be let down by Bupa. this - there is an excess to pay, yes, fine - but you will pay the $100 excess on EVERY SINGLE ISSUE/PROBLEM your pet has, every year. So.....come in with a lame leg and a skin issue? That will be $200 in excess cost. Come in with a GI issue the next month? That will be another $100 excess, thanks. Then the kicker. Say, your pet has a lump removed that is suspected to be (or is) cancer? Well, that cancer will be considered a "skin issue" and Bupa (not many know this) has "sub-limits" for most conditions. So, you sign up and believe you are covered for, say, $12,000 in vet costs anually. But - you're actually not. There are sub-limits on most conditions so you will only be covered up to $500 (annually). So, that tumor? Good luck in treating it with any help from Bupa as you are out of luck after that $500 limit is reached (super quickly). Any further surgery/chemo/meds in that year........OUT OF LUCK. I suppose you can't call it a scam as there would be some super-tiny print somewhere that warns you but we thought we'd read through our policy before signing on and did not realise this. However, it certainly stands right on the line of being a scam. We are also stuck with Bupa and the absolute lack of care until our renewal date. Please, absolutely take our word and look elsewhere. It is an utter waste of money and horrible customer service for your dollars. They absolutely do not care about customer service or retention. Please do avoid the scam we find ourselves in.

Absolute rip off – I had to give one star rating because there are no 0 star rating. Incredibly disappointed in this product. my claim. I did it submit case notes from the vet and was then informed that it would take a month for any results of their decaying to pay. Today I got the good news! Despite having the top cover for my pets I would not be given a refund because it would exceed my yearly entitlement for my policy. Needless to say I cancelled today. Total rip off. I will also be reviewing my own Bupa health insurance and after over 20 years with them will most likely leave.
The worst customer service – I have Bupa health insurance and pet insurance for Many years. The customer service you receive from Bupa health is fantastic and the cover they provide is excellent but Bupa Pet Insurance is the complete opposite. Bupa should be ashamed of the customer service Bupa pet (pet sure) staff provide. I wish I insured else where for pet insurance. I would not recommend Bupa Pet Insurance. Show details
Ordinary - but they all are – They were generally polite and helpful when I had contact with them (never made a claim), however, price increases every year, which you expect, but then just recently they increased the premium by 25%!!! Disappointing - Pet Insurance Customer Service – I have been a member with Bupa Health for years and also have my car insurance with them so I obviously looked at Bupa Pet Insurance when we got our puppy. and we did need to ring Bupa once to ask about our refund all was okay.
Bupa automatically renewed our policy in July and our repayments jumped to $110 a month, I went online and tried to get a new quote to see if it would be the same as what they bumped me up to and to my surprise I could get the exact policy for $80 a month so I called Bupa and explained that I could get the same policy $30 a month cheaper than what I currently paid to which I was told this is for new customers and their policies will go up after a year, I asked do Bupa not look after customers which have been with them for multiple years and explained I had my health and car insurance with Bupa to. I was told there is nothing they can do apart from lower the covered amount to $12,000 to make it cheaper. I asked if I am able to cancel my policy which I was advised I can cancel at any time so I said I will look in to a new insurance company and call them back to cancel. In the meantime I had also submitted a claim for my dogs 1 year vaccination which Bupa paid us back $80.
Last month I called Bupa to ask if I could lower the covered amount to $12,000 to which I was now advised I cant because I have made a claim and have to keep that cover for the year, I asked to then cancel my cover and was told again I cant because I made a claim and if I want to cancel I need to pay the complete years amount. I explained I wasn't advised this previously and was told that's the way it is. The man was very rude and clearly didn't care.
I will be leaving Bupa as soon as the next year is out and already moved my car insurance and looking at new insurance providers for my health care.
I would not recommend Bupa Pet Insurance at all!!!
