Chromagen 200L Gas Boosted Questions & Answers
VerifiedI have a brand new 200l solar gas boosted hot water system, everytime i turn the hot water tap on the gas booster starts and continually run. If i turn the gas off, the hot water is boiling hot. My question is, why does the gas booster run when the water is hot.
No idea ask Chromagen good luck with customer service or warranty if required. My product was rubbish the storage tank spilt 5 years 3 months no assistance whatsoever and the plumbers I spoke to just laughed and said I was lucky it lasted that long.
Hello, our system keeps flicking the switch in the electricity box. We are continuously waking up with no hot water. Anyone had similar issues and fix them?
You could try unplugging the pump and just leave the instantaneous unit plugged in, see if it still trips like that, doing so will help you narrow down the issue. The instantaneous will work without the solar pump. If it still trips it means you’re instantaneous is probably cooked.
Thankyou I'll give it a try
Not sure if that component is over 2 years than Chromagen don’t want to know you. Terrible hot water service mine only last 5 years 2 months. No warranty
Oh no that's really not good
Where do i find the booster switch for hot water shower only stays hot for 1 minute
I have a 2007 system that has been working pretty good all this time, but of resent it is taking some 5 mins to get hot water coming through which is a waste on water. And after it goes hot can get cold as well Is this a service issue or something that we can adjust ourselves on the control panel?
If it's a Solar gas boosted system. It's probably the most common issues that most have been having with Chromagen. Solar system is gone and your booster has been working overtime. Looks like your booster might be on the way out. The main issue, most plumbers will not touch the system and if your lucky and can get hold of Chromagen assistance, they will send someone to check it, which is extremely expensive. Good Luck.
I have a Eternity G20 and solar panel hot water system. At the moment with just the hot tap on we are getting hot water for about 2 minutes then it goes cold and hot, cold and hot. spend most of the time in the shower adjusting the temperature. any idea what the problem is?
We had the same problem with the same system. Called the installer who took the water saver restrictor out of the shower heads. That solved it for us
Thanks for your help. We have a shower in the main bathroom and the ensuite and both are effected. Neither have water saver restrictor's unfortunately.
Hi Phil I have the same problem.did you end up finding a fix?
No haven't fixed it
Hi , anyone has found the solution ? I have the same exact problem.
Why is the Chromogen frost valve continuously leaking slowly connected to solar panel?
Hi, our Chromogen Eternity G20 solar boost stopped heating the water. What could be the problem? could it be the thermostate?
I have an Eternity G20 solar boost, I would like to increase the temperature, checked with plumber and he sent adjustment details, the temp control switches are supposed to show 5678 but both of the control switches I have on this unit are 1234, can you advise adjustment of 10 degrees please??
Hi Tony, Yes you can adjust the temp however be mindful if you do the pipes might move in the wall cavities causing a rattle sound. Most of the temps are set at around 37degrees as a safety feature to prevent burns especially around children.
Having said that it is still an easy adjustment. We had a plumber working locally attend to increase ours slightly. It cost us a 6 pack. Much cheaper than a service call.
Thanks Matt, yes I have been in touch with the plumber, he gave me directions but my switches are different to use manual, instead of second rank of switches being 5678 they are 2 with 1234. Tony
It looks likeI am not going to get any help from the manufacturer, so that's my first indication of a POOR PRODUCT, NO SUPPORT.

How did you end up going with adjusting the hotwater Tony? I'm in the same position at the moment
Have a 200L Chromogen solar with gas booster. The hot water smells awful and is causing a skin reaction. Does anyone else have this problem with this gas hot water tank?
The problem won't be associated with the water heater, but something in the water itself. Is the system connected mains water, or a rain water tank?
Hello i have the eternity g20 with the solar panels. Last night i could hear water runni g on the roof so i had to turn of the water from the main as it was a lot of water. When looking at it today we could see that the water is coming from the solar panels. Can i turn of the water to the solar panels and just use the gas part on the hot water system. As its not fun have all water turned of to the house and we cant get anyone out to have a look at it until later in the week .
Thanking you from Veronica
Don't take as right but there's a bronze thing on the side with glass in it with a screw try turning that a quarter turn I'm not saying I'm right but the plumber turned mine to replace a solar sensor and didn't turn it back and he told me it had to do with water to the solar panel but don't ring Chromagen they charge like a wounded bull
Thank you but i just hand the plumber out and he has blocked of the solar panels so the water no longer travels to them and we are judt using the gas boosted hot water now . Until the plumber can get on the roof the fix the solar panels as its raining
Is there any good reviews for this product ? I think i will call builder and ask to use a different brand
Hi Joseph. You answered your own question. Yes go with a different brand. The Chromagen is a waist of money. Good luck
Hi Jimanji. This is a good question. Given the nature of the product, most consumers are very unlikely to take the time to write a good review about their hot water system and so yes you'll find the majority of reviews are not so positive. This however, is pretty much consistent across all brands of solar hot water systems, with many of the reviews you see in relation to poor product understanding by those installing; which ultimately leads to poor installation where issues can arise.
In regards to Chromagen, we supply over 20,000 solar water heaters per year to Australian consumers, and unfortunately in all reality a small percentage of these do experience an issue (again very often related to poor installation). When these handful of issues arise we strive to provide the best service and most customers are left satisfied with a positive resolution, unfortunately there are a few that are disgruntled, hence the reviews you see.
We suggest you speak with your builder to discuss your hot water options, and just check that the plumber they use for your build is familiar with the correct installation when it comes to installing a solar hot water system.
Kind Regards,
Chromagen.
I have a 200l Chromegen gas boosted solar system and it is a 2010 model that I have just purchased, never used and when the plumber hooked it up and tryed to start it without the panels hooked up just of the gas booster.
The fan and clicker go but it won't egnight ???
Hi Ky, Thank you for your question. Possible causes for a gas booster failing to light would more than likely be related to incorrect gas pressure or an issue with the PCB board. If you require further assistance you can also contact our service team on 1300 367 565 and select option 3.
Hope this is helpful.

Our G20 eternity hot water system has just turned 5 years old. It randomly turns off and we have no hot water. If we wait awhile, it comes back on. This is very frustrating and inconvenient! We have had 2 plumbers out to look at the system neither can identify a problem. The first plumber suggested that we service the unit, which we did. It wasn't any better. That second plumber decided that we should just replace the unit for another that is more reliable. This is frustrating because it is costing us money not mention many mornings of cold showers. Does anyone know the problem or more importantly the solution?
Hi Jade. I have the same problem. I find it relates to water pressure. I think that they were designed for higher pressures to work properly. I suspect this is chromagen being cheap and trying to save money in their designs. The best way to deal with it in my opinion is to invest in a better conventional hot water service. Regards mr a
Our system stopped working and it's the main control board of the gas booster, but if you are expecting express service from Chromagen forget it. I ordered a new part, paid for express postage and 5 days later still nothing and I'm only 60km from the warehouse, you can get a item from America, China or the UK in that time.

ozputu. u were right. It was the control board. I called Chromogen
ozputu. u were right. It was the control board. I called Chromagen and they came out 2 days later and fixed the problem within 20mins and $300 later. we've had hot water since
Hi
We do not have enough hot water in the upstairs bathrooms. I would like to know the cost of having somebody to come and inspect/service our system?
Thanks//Kam
Hi Kam, Thank you for your question. This really is something best discussed with one of our service team members as we would require a little more information before assisting you with this enquiry. I encourage you to contact our service team on 1300 367 565 (option 2).

Hi Chromagen,
Why should i have to pay extra money for the replacement solar panel which is under warranty to be fitted with extra components to bring it up to your revised standard just so the replacement panel holds it new warranty?
You have said to me that if i do not pay this money then the replacement solar panel warranty will be void.
So if my existing panel had not broken then it's warranty would still be valid, However by replacing it under warranty that some how voids the warranty unless i pay you more money, In essence you will be cutting our warranty short by 2 years unless we pay more.
Does not seem right to me, sounds like a scam to cover the cost of a flawed product design.
Would be interested to see a reply.
Regards,
Brendan
My most recent advice is that Chromagen will replace my frost affected panel when a new shipment arrives. So far there has been no mention of the extra payment. I have been without the solar heating since mid August.
Still hoping!
I would follow them up, They have told me they will replace our panel on the 16th of December, They never mentioned not having stock to me. I am getting my own plumber to fit the frost valve to save $300 odd on labor.
If you haven't spoken to them recently i'm sure they have forgotten about your panel or don't care about it, That's the service and attitude i have received so far.
I do hope it works out for you though.
The only way I ended up getting action from Chromagen was by 1/. Getting the Company/builder who built my house involved and 2/. Going to Consumer Affairs Victoria and getting advice on how to get Chromagen to honor their warranty.
The Panel was covered by warranty, but I also had to pay. Pay for labour which was apparently not covered by warranty and also pay for the sensor to be connected from the panel to the water storage unit. Now that is interesting because the whole thing was originally installed by Chromagen and it would appear the sensor had never been connected properly. You cannot win with this Company, no matter what you do. Only took them 3 months to action my warranty - what a joke this Company is.
Our system is just over years old I can hear water pipes through walls when turned on through basin and shower. I also hear our pipes in the roof sometime. Our builder thinks it is the water heater but cromagen wants too much money for them to come out and look at problem it is has just ran out of warranty? has any one else had that problem. with the water unit?
thanks
Hi Mamma, Sorry to hear about your experience. The noise you are hearing is more than likely due to water hammering when the pipes are under pressure and not the hot water system itself. Clipping of the pipes or moving them so it’s not pressing next to a wall should help to improve this situation. I would suggest getting in contact with the person who undertook the plumbing for this house build (your home builder should be able to advise you here). If you require any further assistance please contact our service team on 1300 367 565 or via email on service@chromagen.com.au.
Kind Regards,
Chromagen
Hi Mamma - I can almost be certain that the pipes are noisy because they are loose and it is not likely to be the water heater. So save yourself a lot of money and heartache and get your builder to have a look at the problem. Chromagen will only rip you off - as you said, they want too much money to go out and have a look. If it did turn out to be the water heater, even though the warranty may have run out (just), there is such a thing as 'implied warranty' and with the assistance of Consumer Affairs in regard to advice, you would find the Company still has to replace the product - free. Keep us updated.
Is it really that bad? Thinking of getting this system as they are at least $2K less than the others?
I just discovered in March this year that my solar PUMP wasn't even plugged in and two plumbers missed it so there was no solar heating even being used. It took me being frustrated to find why my tank was always cold, even in Melbourne Summer!! Now it's working and the gas boost part is rarely used! Go ahead and buy it but make sure the person installing it knows what they are doing! When installed correctly its great.
If when you test the pressure relief valve ,(which you should do regularly) ,you find the water is coming out of the tank cold Then your solar isn’t working correctly , The little pump under the cover circulates the water from the solar panel to the tank , my one died but as the gas booster took over the heating ,I never Knew ,and I wondered why my gas bills had gone up higher than normal , after realising the pump had died I called a plumber who wanted $700 to replace the pump , I ended up looking on EBay and got it for $198 and replaced it myself in 1/2 hour ,,,,,,,,also I replaced the sacrificial anode myself for $90 all the info is on YouTube how to do it my anode lasted 10years but was 90% worn , . The plumber said Chromagen was cheap and nasty and quoted me $2,800 for a different new system to be hooked into my solar panel , after doing the 2 repairs myself the system is back working perfectly , Total cost to me $300
