Look "Jayde W." I’ve had both C4 Mk1 2006 since new and the M2 diesel since new. The C4 Mk1 Auto has allot gearbox problems (as its a Peugeot box) but the 2.0 litre petrol engine is great, get a manual Mk1 as I’ve had the Mk1 Auto and it was a shocker and has a faulty gearbox. With my current 2012 Mk2 eHDi diesel 6Sp it’s got the same 150k kilometres and the engine is unbelievable, smooth and bullet proof and very economical (1000 km per 60 litre tank even now) but its 6Sp semi auto has an inherit design knocking problems that are not critical but annoying as that is how these gearboxes work, also get a manual if you can as the C4 Mk2 manual boxes are the best, also its developed a leak at the gearbox seal that will need the gearbox taken off and seal replaced, also its condenser has developed a leak just recently that is major job to replace and costly and also the timing belt replacement is quite pricy at about $1800 at every 100k. The C4 1555cc diesel engine is bullet proof and will last more than 1 million kilometres and this vehicle is very comfortable and has all the bells and whistles that you could wish for.

Sam1221 - this C4 Mk2 is not a short term investment like and if you want to sell it in 1 year of course you will lose money, you do that with any vehicle. These vehicles are a long-term investment as especially the diesels just keep going forever and they are not as bad as you make this C4 Mk2 to be. I’ve driven the C4 since it was released in 2006 here in Australis with the Mk1 Exclusive and KK2 Seduction (that got written off and had it replaced by insurance for an Exclusive) and never experienced gearbox problems as bad as you make them out to be.

Yes the EGS 6sp gets a bit confused sometimes but mostly works great and smoothly, but you can always change the gears with the paddle which compensates for all that. Great economy, reliable and just a pleasure to drive with great comfort. Good examples of this Mk2 are going for under 10K and they are worth every dollar, cheap, easy to maintain and very very economical especially the diesel.

We bought a 2011 Citroen C4 and within 7 weeks of purchase we took it to a European specialist for service. Within two weeks of service the radiator kept emptying over night. Took it back to the same mechanic once alerts started appearing and discoverd radiator cap was cracked and popped off. New cap was supplied and coolant refilled. Next day drove to Gold Coast and car alerts came up saying to stop car, engine fault, get service. Daughter ignored because when she slowed down alerts disappeared and since we just had it at mechanics it had to be fine. Car went into idle and whole engine overheated and died. Had whole engine replaced. Everything under honey New except for gearbox. Three days after pickibg it up from new mechanic the exact same thing happened. No coolant same alerts but this time stopped immediately so engine wouldn't overheat. Mechanic is perplexed as to why this would happen. Any ideas?

Really sorry about all your problems, Kris, but I have no technical expertise, so can't offer anything useful.

Good luck

Hi Kris

Sorry to hear all this,as it's not something you hear about and it seems that you have tried everything.Have they run a computer check on the vehicle?..I am sure they have.

Hi Kris, your problem sounds like an ECU (Electronic Control Unit or as we know it 'the computer") problem, there is no way that after you have replaced the engine that the same problems accure! Take it to a Citroen dealer and get them to analyse the vehicle on their diagnostic unit. Dont take it to a Euro mechanic as they dont have all the proper diagnostic tools specifically designed for the C4!
