The engineers failed with this – About maybe a week ago I found this model of Dyson sitting underneath a chair on a rubbish pile, naturally it being a Dyson, and hard to find in the rubbish, I ran over, (like an [Content Removed]), and picked it up. And behold it worked, there happened a slight odour emitting from the machine, however it wasn't burning at all, instead it was… Read more

mixed with pet and cake mix. As I have stated in some of my other reviews I refurbish vacuums from hard rubbish as people just don't know how to maintain these things.

For the time being it has worked well and its suction is good for its design, the attachments that come with it are very useful for day-to-day tasks, however unfortunately the brush roll is quite soft soft and the bristles are flimsy and break down very easily, I often find bits of it in the canister when I got to empty it. Not to mention the bristles are way too short to reach any carpet that's in my home, yet Australia is known for having short pile carpet, at this point its just a spinning piece of decoration. I seem to see the issue that other people have stated and/or complained about a loud frequency noise that is quite irritating, to which they reckon is the hose coming loose, however that is not the case. The handle that can retract in and out to reach up high and low doesn't really have a seal, and over time with the handle moving around air starts to leak out, which then makes this noise. the wand is good, although a little bit too short for my liking, but I guess it has to fit with the length of the hose. The click fitting it really easy to use as its basically the same as the V8, I feel that people are just too lazy to actually even try to line it up properly so that it clicks into place.

Now the cyclones...boy oh boy are they TERRIBLE, I understand that washing filters can be a right pain in the butt, but using latex cyclones!? I mean the design is even worse than the Dyson DC52! The cyclones are supposed to spin in opposite directions really fast, but in reality flap around aggressively like an inflatable tube man. All the fine dust and hair just seems to pass though the motor or get caught in the fan, as of this one the copper coils were white, it surprised me that it hadn't burnt out. I will admit, I am much happier with a Panasonic motor rather than a Dyson as they are a lot more resilient and can withstand a lot more damage rather than a motor constructed in [Content Removed] by Dyson.

The post-motor filter is just as bad, or even worse, when you get into the machine, (which isn't particularly difficult, the filter cannot be opened, meaning that it can't be cleaned out well enough, and not to mention that it can be harder to find replacement filters, and the price of the filters are just absolutely outrageous, $170, certainly I wouldn't pay something like that, if anything I'd buy a non-genuine one from Temu for cheaper! Not only is the filter bad, but everything is so cramped together that there is basically no airways for the air to escape, although Dyson is nutritious for making machines with no airflow to pass though.

If I ever had the chance to buy this vacuum I personally wouldn't, don't blow your hard earnt money on this model, instead invest in something better.

Disappointing and useless since day 1 – Today the rewind died. Dyson service - no after hours - Chat does not work. Vacuum is a few years old has been used about 125 times. Has never been any good on carpet. Difficult to use/empty/noisy/and ineffective. I have a Sanyo vacuum retired to the garage and it is over 30 years old and works perfectly. I am on my third Dyson hand held -… Read more

which is why the “Big Balls up” has had little use. The hand-helds also die. Fantastic that other brands now make similar vacuums to Dyson.

Being creative, stylish, great for those who “look good” early adopters paying for the most expensive product and getting the hired help to use it - that is the Dyson target market. Not so great for those who thought they would get a superior product. Guess you pay for a Porsche/ Ferrari /Mercedes etc you expect a superior product - in Dyson’s case you do not get that.

The Best Vacuum cleaner brand to buy – I have wooden floors, laminate plank flooring and carpet. I have had multiple other brands of vacuum cleaners but when I decided to buy the dyson cy23 it was the best decision I made as I have now owned it for more then 5 years and its still just as good as when I first purchased it. floors in just a day or two from playing inside and out side with our dog. It has a very powerful suction and cleans the carpets with ease and when it comes to our wood flooring and laminate plank flooring it's effortless. It does have a filter that requires just cleaning out now and then but I highly recommend buying a dyson vacuum that suits your needs and do save money as you will highly unlikely have to replace it for years.

Not worth the money, unlike older Dysons. Design flaws plague this model – As I've had this vacuum for a few years now, I feel I am now able to provide a comprehensive review of its abilities. We used to have a Dyson upright that had served us well but we weren't a fan of how heavy it was to push and how difficult it was to use the tightly retracted hose without the unit tipping over, so we decided to stay within the… Read more

brand and purchase a more familiar barrel-type vacuum (like our previous ones), despite this being the most we spent on a vacuum, which was reasonable when expecting this to last many years. We spent extra on the Allergy variant as we were interested in the turbine brush for use on carpeting.

The truth is, it isn't really that great on any floor surface. On my old house's laminate floors, the floor tool simply pushed dirt around rather than sucking it in unless you made a conscious effort to go over dust very slowly. On tile, it's marginally better but not very much so. On carpet, it was fine initially on shallow loop pile carpet, but on any cut pile rug/carpeting (still shallow), it struggles to pick up surface level dust even with a clean bin and otherwise good suction. The floor tool despite it being Dyson's "best", needs constant passes just to get surface level dust, let alone embedded dust which there's no way of proving if it is removed or not. We never wear our outdoor shoes inside so the carpets never get too dirty, but for those who do, I doubt this machine will inspire any confidence as it is already struggling with regular house dust.

The BIGGEST issue with this machine is the design flaws and poor build quality. The most troublesome issue is the weak latch mechanism on the bin. It is a small bit of plastic which holds the bin shut but I have faced the same issue many have complained about since the very beginning, which despite how tight and secure it is when installing the bin, upon removal, the bin lid will flip open and dump all the dust you’ve been vacuuming up back onto your floors. I’ve attached an image of the size of the catch, beside a 20c coin for scale. It is absolutely tiny and over time as the motor’s heat/vibration makes the plastic mechanisms not as tightly sealed as it is brand new (this part sits right up beside the motor), it is able to slide away from the catch. I cannot fathom why they would cheap out on this vital piece, when they simply could’ve made a wider ridge for the hook to catch on. To date, I’ve gone back to Dyson numerous times and they just keep sending me the same flawed bin which works fine initially but then exhibits the same issue after less than a year (and I don’t even vacuum very frequently). I cannot trust it anymore and have to have my hand under the container as I carefully walk to my bin to empty it.

That brings me to the emptying part – it’s nowhere near as easy or hygienic as they make it seem. The bottom lid gets dust and hair in its crevices, and as with any other bagless there seems to be a small plume of dust that flies around as you empty it. Many times, I’ve had to even use my hands to aid clumps of dust out into an old plastic bag. I cannot believe this is marketed towards ALLERGY sufferers, I don’t have any allergies and it’s sickening enough emptying this one and its poorly designed bin without dust flying everywhere.

Within a year, in early 2017, the wheel fell of the unit and upon inspection, it was an in-warranty repair as the heat generated by the unit had weakened the plastic attachment. It had to be sent back to Dyson to be attached back on. That was pretty disappointing as I’ve never once had that happen on previous models but the wheel on this unit seems to be a thin disc of plastic built more for aesthetics than function, but I’m just glad it happened within the warranty period.

I’ve paid for the extended warranty a couple of years back as the manufacturer’s warranty was about to end and the machine had given me enough worries as it is. Now that is about to end soon and overall, given the disappointing price to performance ratio of this vacuum, this is the very last Dyson I will own. I’ve always believed in the bagless hype but after seeing that even this the ‘ultimate’ bagless vacuum, has not been appreciably better and in some cases worse than my previous one, I may very well get my very first bagged vacuum (going by Product Review, I seemed to have found some top-rated Mieles, plus I’ve already had good experiences with the brand, so I am tempted). I was never a fan of consumables but seeing what a pain this is in terms of maintenance and emptying, my mind is now open to alternatives. Just don’t fall for the marketing – the whole bin design is flawed and it is NOT a pleasant experience dealing with this in the long run – but then again this is a brand that demonises well-priced traditional alternatives to sell you their own $800 tower fan or $500 hairdryer, so why am I surprised that quality went down the drain and margins shot up with this most-recent series of vacuums. Never again…

because I needed a vacuum that could clean well I purchased this! Sooo apart from the smallest thing causing lack of suction, the vacuum has more rattles than I can figure out! The head that comes with it had such a high pitch noise, until it started rattling and basically being the most useless piece of $800 I've purchased. Seriously, $800 is a LOT of money for a vacuum. It has lasted 2 years...the motor runs, the rest is just rubbish. It just frustrates me, as my original was amazing and I wish the brand had continued with that kind of quality.

Won't be buying Dyson again – I purchased the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Allergy vacuum cleaner nearly one year ago. purchase another Dyson hard-floor head, which does a better job but clogs up with dust very quickly.

After using it for some weeks, I noticed a number of things; it would require emptying multiple times during the course of one house clean (our house is not large). One of the joints on the articulating wand arm would frequently pinch the skin on my arm leaving a significant purple bruise. This 'pinching' has happened to me on multiple occasions since and it has also happened to my mother on one occasion when she used the vacuum cleaner. The bin emptying mechanism is clunky and doesn't work very well - I have also found that if you do not click the bottom lid shut perfectly after emptying, it will open the next time you remove it from the vacuum cleaner, spilling dirt everywhere in your house (this just happened to me for the hundredth time - hence this review - I've had enough!). The anti-topple feature works but you still have to stand there and wait for the vacuum cleaner to correct itself so it doesn't actually 'save time'. The suction is odd - while it seems to suck well on carpet, and does appear to vacuum up a lot of dirt, if I take the head off and try to vacuum up something small - like a dead fly on a window sill - it struggles to pick it up. I have tested this by putting my hand near the end of the hose when it is on and it feels weirdly like a gentle breeze. Although, if you actually place your hand over the entire nozzle it does have a decent amount of suction. This is just an unusual observation I have made, but there is something 'off' about the suction on this unit.

After nearly one year of use, it requires even more constant emptying (sometimes 3 or 4 times a clean) and it loses suction significantly. It also gets extremely hot during use - so hot you can barely touch the barrel. This makes the room hot and vacuum cleaning is now just a sweaty workout.

On the positives, I do like the fact that I can vacuum under the entire bed due the flexibility of the hose and its hinges. It can vacuum, although - depending on how you look at it - not very efficiently. I do like the longer electrical cord too. The telescopic handle is great for someone like me (5'11"). The emptying function is handy, it just need significant refinements.

I'm not interested in a replacement, or a free trip to the Dyson repair shop. I'm really just waiting for the day this product of planned obsolescence explodes and is no longer usable - then I will buy something else.

Dismal, disappointing and to many flaws! :( – I can't believe how far backwards dyson have come. As a long time dyson user, I have purchased them (despite their ridiculous prices) because they have always been well built and worked well. However this will be my last dyson - the quality has seriously declined and they have developed a number of flaws which include: * The machine is purple… Read more

but labelled 'Big Ball Allergy' which is really strange because the Allergy only comes in

blue and the purple machine they sell is called the Animal. I contacted dyson and they didn't want anything to do

with it

* Dust builds up around vents instead of falling to bottom of canister. This causes loss of suction and the brush

head to stop spinning, therefore running straight over particles which it should be picking up

* By far the loudest of all vacs I have heard or used - not really a fault but excessive noise is obviously not

something that they focus on reducing

*Makes a really high pitched screeching/whistling noise (not the normal machine noise) when twisting/moving the

handle to the side. This is quite irritating - I have pulled all connections apart to inspect but there appears no

obstructions to be causing this.

* Was really looking forward to the hygienic emptying but the latch is incredibly difficult to slide down to empty and

even more so to slide back up and close it

* Head is very narrow (good for fitting in tiny places, but the extra accessories can do this). Don't know why dyson

didn't keep the same size head as it takes twice as long to do the vacuuming now the head is twice as small.

* Canister is so tiny, I can only get 3 rooms done before its full. The previous dyson could do the whole house

about 4 times (4 bedrooms, including loungeroom, kitchen, bathroom, rumpus) before filling.

* Power cord is extremely short - I have to turn the vac off and plug it into every room I do whereas the previous

dyson could almost do the whole house from the one powerpoint.

* Fabric strip which helps protect flooring fell off the bottom of the cleaning head after a short time. Overall quality is a concern - I can't help but think how much longer the machine which isn't even a yr old will last (the previous dyson lasted 15 yrs).

* Brush head stops easily - we have only 1 female and no pets in the house, yet when using the brush head it gets the slightest bit of hair in it and stops spinning. I have to stop the machine and take the head apart to clean (not to mention the lock to get the brush out is very tight and difficult to get unlocked).

and still having issues. Today in front of my husband I removed the dust bin from the machine to empty it and the lid flipped open and the entire house worth of dust fell all over my floor. When I mentioned to the Dyson service rep about how I purchased this due to my severe allergy problems she said ‘we only call it an allergy machine because it comes with a mattress tool’ well didn’t I feel foolish, I have literally fallen for a marketing joke and now am stuck with a vacuum cleaner I hate which cost me a fortune. I should have stuck with my trusty Miele. I only blame myself for getting sucked into wanting ‘the best Dyson’ but at the time I wanted the best to keep dust from irritating myself and my family, Dyson aren’t willing to help me with offering me a better machine or a refund so hopefully this review will stop someone else from purchasing it and having the same issues. It Suck But A Disappointing Head – I have long been loyal to and a fan of the Dyson brand but having recently purchased a Big Ball Allergy from David Jones I am genuinely disappointed. While build quality is all that you would expect from the Dyson, the turbine head attached to this unit is woeful, on hard floors it will not pick up anything larger than a dust particle, kicking… Read more

anything larger about not leaving floors clean. The suction is good but this unit of little to no use to anyone who has a hard or wooden floor without purchasing a dedicated hardwood floor head. Given the price point, in my view this should be included with the vacuum - the turbine head simply does not work on hard floors.

March 2nd 2019 Update: Great disappointment.

Don't believe the 'reinvention of the vacuum' spin. The Big Ball Kinetic, Allergy is a great disappointment. Correct me if I am wrong but I was of view that the intention of the invention is to lift dust and dirt from a floor surfaces - it fails to do so. The heads do not work well. We own the power head (supplied with the unit) and later purchased the swivel hard floor tool. The power head, on hard floors can only be described as ordinary at best. It successfully brushes dirt but takes as many as three to four passes to collect. It is also incapable of picking up a leaf or anything larger than a 10c piece - Something a 1980's hoover was/is very capable of. The hard floor head is not a great deal better, the thing struggles to pick up a very small, dry dog biscuit. As a consumer I feel the brand place the belief in their our technology ahead of form and function. The vacuum, at a high price point, does not work well and causes much frustration - a great shame as I first purchased the original Dyson some 15 years ago, and it worked. Very well. I will be shelving my most recent Big Ball purchase and will not be buying another.

It’s good but not Dyson good – I bought this vacuum a month ago after my old Dyson broke and I was tempted by the “allergy” part of this model. My kids all have allergies so I was desperate for anything that could help. It is good but there are times when things spit out while I vacuum. Sometimes it’s because something is stuck but other times I can’t figure it out. So I have… Read more

to revacum an area a number of times. I have also noticed a change in suction when it gets full. I don’t know if I’ve assembled it wrong but it just doesn’t seem the same quality as other dysons.

Very heavy going – Update: Dyson customer service is much better than the new machine. They are having machine picked up and refunding total cost. There is a 30 day money back policy. I found someone who will repair the old machine for less than $250. Will review that service when it is complete. original review: Large house. Wood floors. Tribal rugs. … Read more

Carpet.

Took advice of customer service woman on phone about which model to buy when very old Dyson motor burned out. Dyson no longer has replacement parts, does not service old machines. I should have looked for an independent repair person!

Very strong suction certainly gets the dog hair and threads, dust etc.

BUT the combination of strong suction and the whirly-headed floor tool makes it almost impossible for me to vacuum the rugs. It requires a great deal of physical strength. If I hold the suction release trigger, it is better but then my hand cramps. There is no way to latch the trigger open.

It is not quite so bad on carpet but still very hard work. Bare floors are fine.

And the bin-cleaning arrangement is terrible. It is a real struggle to get the little plastic catch to latch onto the bottom of the bin and if you fail, next time you detach the bin, the base falls open and spills grot all over.

House is clean but I am exhausted and cranky!

Good suction, some poor engineering – Having had a Dyson Animal for 15 years now being held together by duct tape in parts , we decided to upgrade. Went to get an Animal but the Allergy was on offer at Good Guys and had a free multi tool set so went with it. Pros - good suction; picks up all dirt and dust, and most dog hairs; switches between carpet and hard floor;follows around… Read more

nicely;cord a good length; no filter to clean; apparently self cleaning but not really had long enough to test.

Cons - extender tube static (covered in hair and dirt all the time); lack of tools (only made better with free car kit); poor design emptying procedure (whoever designed this has failed. Terrible design which relies on a tiny plastic nodule to hold all the vacuumed up stuff. More than one this has failed and all dirt has fallen out. Plus some weird red press lever thing that doesn't work well. Redesign needed. Much prefer a top opening please !)

**Update** April 2018. Plastic wheel fell off the main head! Rubbish. Less than 6 months old and probably only used 60 times. Anyway complained and Dyson are sending a replacement head. I predict that this vacuum will not have a long life span. PS that cylinder emptying system. It just doesn't work. Spent a while wrestling with it yesterday. :(
