Good vacuum – Ive had This vacuum cleaner for about 3 years now and it's still like new , the suction is still really good , it's easy to clean , and easy to mansuver , it's medium in weight , I use it to vacuum my tiles and carpet, although it's not really good for shaggy rugs. Show details
Smelly Lound Awkward – I bought this quite a few years ago. This machine is a pain. The hose is always twisting cutting suction. I have a dog and it picks up the hair no complaints there it is excellent at that but like others find the smell very annoying. The noise is horrific. I wish the thing would die but it just keeps going. It is far from easy to maneuver and… Read more
putting it away is a nightmare having to wind the hose around the body of the thing well lets just say it does not stay there. This is my 2nd Dyson but it will be my last. I wish it had a tail pipe so I could shove a spud up there and then maybe it would die.
Tried to be patient. But this thing is Garbage – Everytime I use it, it gets clogged at the handle. The wire running through the hose collects any pet hair around it until it just stops working. I then have to fish out anything around the wire and start again. This is my first Dyson experience and most likely my last. I expected the premium price to come with a premium product but thats not the case Show details
Love the Dyson DC23 Animal! – I bought the DC23 Animal 3 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made! I moved into a very large 5 bed home with LOTS of thick carpet. The amount of dust it picks up is amazing! My partner has asthma and he can really notice the difference. The best thing I love bout the Dyson is even though the barrel is a little annoying to empty it is… Read more
soo worth it as this vacume doesnt spit out dust when you're using it! Nor does it smell...The filter system barrel is soo great...what you suck up stays sucked in and then straight out when its time to empty. The turbine head unfortunately has worn out its roller and needs a replacement so im thinking I might like to try the flat head as its alot cheaper. But I just love my Dyson...its a great addition to my family home :-)
It's the first vacuum to every blow up on me – I was very happy with this machine until it blew up after 5 years of less than average use. I have since read quite a few forums that say it is a common problem among Dyson Vacuums so I will definitely do a lot more research and read more product reviews before buying a replacement - and it won't be a Dyson! If the average vacuum is only going… Read more
to last 5 years I am not spending over $700 on it (+ extended warranty costs).
UPDATE:
Repair quote from Dyson came back at $275 - I am very disappointed.
They tell me that on top of the engine being blown ($145), the turbine head is also dead and needs replacing ($129). I think given the amount they sell these machines for, the least they could do is look after you when they break down.
I love this machine – We bought our Dyson Dc23 in 2009 after adopting a dog who had an allergy to dustmites. We live in a house with 2 adults (myself who also has mild hayfever), my messy husband and the said dog (long hair, mixed breed, beagle size) with slate, tiles, carpet and floor boards. The vacuum is used every other day. We also have the hard floor head… Read more
which I use on the floor Boards and tiles. The motor head is used on rugs and carpets.
In 2015, the vacuum is still awesome and working. We have replaced the Motörhead as the connection point for the bristles to the metal rods broke about a year ago and also, 3 months out of the warranty (2012); I sucked up plastic and burnt the motor out. I rang up Dyson to get the details of a person to fix it and instead they offered to replace the engine for FREE outside of warranty. I didn't whinge or even ask; they willingly offered. I merely covered the courier cost which came to my work and picked up then dropped it off again, fixed a week or so later for $50 which was money well spent. This awesome service and is some what unusual now.
The vacuum itself is still great. The pros (besides the customer service).
1) it has lasted. We burnt the first engine out 4 years ago and I am sure it is because I did something stupid. Another cheaper vacuum we had in a rental place lasted 12 months because I wore it out (and this was before the dog) as I love a clean house. This vaccum has lasted and works well still.
2) it always did and still works well (yes I keep saying how awesome it works). It sucks up so much stuff. I can vacuum to my hearts content and it still sucks up so much stuff. No, this isn't because it is ineffective as obviously there is less if you vacuum then immediately vacuum again but because it just finds things to suck up as it so powerful.
3) you can see what it sucks up. It is so satisfying to see it (yes I know it's gross) because you think "that is no longer in my carpet".
4) washable parts and filter. I love the filter and barrel are washable. I simply use a hose attachment and stick it into the barrel (which disconnected from the machine and emptied and in a laundry tub) and run warm water through it to remove dust. This was something I found out via forums and users and is so easy to do. Not in the instructions. I did triple check and also ask Dyson about it before doing it and found out it wouldn't harm it.
5) it's look and compactness. I love how it folds up and stores almost within itself.
Now the downsides of this vacuum.
1)Yes it is noisy (but vacuums are)
2) it is one of the earlier models it can get caught as it has hard sides (yes it has chipped skirting boards)
3) yes it is heavy but I suspect the newer ones aren't so much.
4) it is expensive but it works and my dog is happy and not scratching as much.
The big question - if and when it dies will I buy another Dyson? You bet no question.
Impossible to get through to Dyson to find cost of replacement head – The DC23 has been pretty good in giving a good old vacuum, but like so many of these reviews the head didn't work so well after a fairly short period of time. I just ploughed on but it is now stopping the suction so am having to use the hose by itself, which is of course more labour intensive. Impossible to get anyone to answer the phone at… Read more
Dyson to find out cost of replacement head. Nearly went and bought a brand new Dyson but lack of customer service is rendering me a little grumpy with the brand. So - good vacuum cleaner - until you strike a problem - then it's unsolvable bc no one ever answers the phone - and I've tried quite a few different extensions!

Doesn't Do The Job :( – Really disappointed, only had it a year and a half and the turbine head doesn't spin. Bought this vacuum cleaner with the belief it was innovative and one of the best. Doesn't even pick up bits of fluff! Now I have the dilemma should I pay for a replacement part that could and probably will go again or get myself a Henry lol. Mr Dyson I've seen… Read more
your documentary about design and inventions. I've even met your employees who come to teach about design in schools.
1. I think I prefer a bag for the dust, it prevents a horrible cloud puffing up into the air when it has to be emptied.
2. What's the point of suction if your turbine head doesn't rotate and causes loss of suction.
3. I wasn't paying for design I was paying for function. Design a product fit for purpose.
Hope my advice goes a long way.
Thanks! Miss Popper
Problems with the Turbinehead – When the brush stopped working on my DC23's Turbinehead, I dismantled it and found that the turbine wheel had stripped the internal splines where it is pressed onto the shaft/drive gear. My first repair was to use cyanocrylic (super glue) cement to attach the turbine wheel to the shaft. This worked for about 2 years and it failed again. This… Read more
time the turbine had not only come loose from the shaft and was spinning freely, but the turbine wheel had also cracked. I tried reattaching it with an epoxy based repair materiel (JB Weld), but was unsuccessful. I haven't taken it apart again, but I'm assuming the epoxy probably bonded well to the steel shaft, but wouldn't firmly bond the the teflon-like material the turbine is made of.
Regardless of what Dyson says, this appears to be an engineering fault. They need to make the turbine wheel out of a stronger and/or more durable material.

By the way . . . aside from a couple of petty issues, the vacuum cleaner itself runs well and sucks up dirt as advertised.
My rating is three stars. It would have been 5 stars if the Turbinehead wasn't so delicate.

wouldn't buy another brand again – Love my Dyson. I won't go back to any other brand again . Picks up everything, reduces dust mites. Sturdy and Great quality. The people who are saying you can't such up ash or building dust...guys...that little picture means don't sick up anything HOT. It doesn't mean don't use around a cold fireplace or after drilling. Don't buy dirty Dyson – This is the most user-unfriendly vacuum cleaner I have owned. Previously I had a bagless Electrolux barrel which was excellent as you could completely wash the whole canister (nice large size - why is Electrolux not making these large bin barrels anymore??) & filters unlike the Dyson which seems to attract an awful lot of dust into the sealed… Read more
cyclonic section - & you can't wash it!!!! (Then it gets smelly.) How bizarre! By the way, my Electrolux still has better suction, it is just that it's hard to find filters now & the plastic broke on the canister & I have to stick it up with duct tape to use it. I don't understand why people think the Dyson is so good? It is heavy, clunky and awkward to use. The hose kinks instead of rotating easily. I am short (157cm), but the extension is hardly long enough even for me. The wand itself is too bulky when you use the crevice/brush attachments. The hard floor tool is useless (probably because there's not much suction) - I have to use the Motörhead on my hard floors to pick anything up, but then I also get dirt thrown back at me instead of being sucked up the tube. It always takes 2 attempts on the start button to actually start (it starts, but then stops when you take your foot off the button - every 1st time, unless you start it without the motor head attached!). It is extremely difficult to get the canister section back onto the cyclonic part when you remove it completely to wash it: which I do every time I use it, as I did with my Electrolux. Still, the suction is impaired after a couple of uses, until my partner stuffs around for a couple of hours to completely dissemble the cyclonic part and clean it out again. Apparently you are supposed to take it to an expert to get this cleaned regularly, but that would be simply ridiculously expensive if we did that. For the amount of money we paid for this monstrosity, you would expect something a LOT better. Bottom line is that I will never buy a Dyson again, & I tell everyone that now as I encounter lots of salesmen in my quest to replace this heap. I can only assume retailers get a huge kickback from selling Dyson - it seems they all want to sell me a Dyson! NO! And NO! Motorhead is the only thing that works good for hair pickup. Everything else!

Does the job – \Have had this for a few years now with no real problems, except we have 2 daughters with long hair and the turbine head tends to struggle when wound with long hairs. work the telescope/wrap system for storage and it would have been nice to have been provided with something to store the tools/accessories which often get lost. We have a thick persian rug that the turbine head seems to only work in one direction on as the suction seems too strong for it. Powerful suction A bit clumsy to use
Dyson Animal - design review – My older model Dyson DC11 recently finally died after approximately 10 years so I made the investment in another Dyson without worry. The machine has fabulous suction and cleans my floors and furniture very well. The new swivel function means the machine follows you more intuitively which is nice however I don't like the way the hose stores as… Read more
it no longer clips into the unit. But when you remove the tub for cleaning you note the attachment to the machine feels rather flimsy. Further the tools and accessories don't fit onto the unit so well making things difficult getting around the house when you lose things. Also the way the attachments clip on mean that you need to multi-handle to change fittings which just doesn't seem ergonomic when your used to a really well designed model. A small thing but the on/off button is on the wrong side of the unit - if your right handed - as you use this button more frequently than the cord retract. These are design considerations I thought Dyson would have been way on top of. I'm hoping the suction doesn't wane with age (as my old unit did) because the functionality and robustness of the unit will not stand it in such good stead as a quality item worth persisting with. good suction ergonomics

Know better, choose better.
Clean as a whistle! – After having an ancient Miele vacuum cleaner for years, this Dyson was a breath of fresh air- literally, I'm sure the air was cleaner. This vacuum cleaner is very strong and will pick up almost anything. Although you do have to empty the container more often, it's definitely worth not having to deal with a disgusting, dusty bag. which is easy to use for everyone. Easy to use, reliable, strong, long-lasting expensive, have to empty often
An effecient cleaner – Have had this machine for approximately 9 months. It has great suction, certainly better than any other cleaner we have used. The standard turbo head is not very effecient, will not pick up a lot.The machine can be awkward to manoeuvre in tight spots. It is very good for storage, hoses and cord fold up very well. Overall a good performer Great suction. Stores well Turbo head not much chop. Can be awkward to manoeuvre
Best vacuum cleaner ever! – We purchased this vacuum in March of this year and cannot find fault with it. We own a short-haired domestic cat that we thought did not shed alot of hair - the dyson showed us how wrong we were! Compared to our previous "bagged" vacuum cleaner there is no nasty smells from an exhaust outlet, and the turbine head brushes the carpet leaving it… Read more
looking brand new. The hard floors attachment swivels and even fits in beside the fridge. We waited until it was on special at Harvey Norman and we hope for the money we paid it will last 10 years, however 6 months of weekly use has made vacuuming rather enjoyable as the results are fabulous! Great suction and easy to clean, turbine head brushes and reinvigorates carpet fibres Expensive if paying RRP
Fantastic for families with pets – This is an amazingly effective vacuum. We have an old cat, 5 year old beagle and just got a Labrador puppy for Christmas. Our old Dyson was on it's last legs so the stocktake sale was timely to pick up this run-out model. The vacuum has made our rugs and carpet look new and we thought the old one was still doing a pretty good job! The hair our… Read more
beagle sheds tends to wind its way into the fabric on couches and carpets but was no match for this model. The floor tool is excellent on hard floors and, because it swivels, it is amazing along the top of the skirting boards too. Both heads get into all the corners and a along edges really well. Great suction, great tools and excellent suction and cleaning ability. The mini-turbo head is wonderful on the couches. Fabulously easy to empty too. Worth every cent! Excellence in cleaning. Large bin capacity that is easy to clean A little heavy but worth it for the quality
Good suction but -- – It has good suction but -- Its expensive, extremely noisy, its heavy if you have to lug it up or clean stairs, the power cord is too short, locating pin on the flat-out tool breaks easily allowing the head to fall off, becoming useless. Average only - expensive for poor durability – I purchased the Dyson Cyclone sometime around 2003 and was not immediately blown away by its capability to clean. Intelligence cleaner for $1200.00 at Godfreys would be a far superior cleaner than a Dyson - there is no meaningful comparison really. German/Swiss precision machinery beats the Dyson hands down. Great - works really well! – It's really easy to use and very effective. It moves around the house behind you easily and is very easy to use on stairs. Overall I would recommend to anyone (especially allergy prone/asthmatic) as I find it very effective. How effective it is and how easy it is to use. Weight and noise from trubo head.
Well worth the cost – This vacuum makes my carpets like new the suction is amazing you don't even have to go over dust you see it sucking in from around the head. The hard floor head is amazing it just zips around my floor fitting into every nook & cranny. The vacuum it's self I'd designed to sit on stairs while you go up them, very handy! Fold away really well Everything! Heavyish but I think it's just a part of life
