well. I was yet to start the settlement process on the shared property, the salesperson was of course very convincing, explained that they had similar experiences, and given my secure employment status I won't have problems obtaining finance. And so I decided to build my new home with FHBD. I was put in contact with the recommended finance broker, provided all necessary documentation straight away. Here you go, I thought - mid next year I will be in my new house! Exciting! We found a block of land, I was happy with location and the price was reasonable. I secured the land with the deposit in the early days of December and paid a deposit to the builder to start preparing quotations. We discussed the specifications and I was offered a Luxury Package, with all the upgraded appliances, aircon, painting, stone bench tops, etc, etc, etc. Then we started going back and forth with different designs from the builder's gallery, which were not completely suitable for the block due to odd shape, this took almost all December, when suddenly I found out that garage should be on a different side of the block, which ment whatever modifications were done were no longer valid... Ok, i thought, just a bump on the road... I drew my own design, to fit the block and it was put through to get the drawings done. I'm obviously not a professional engineer and assumed the drawings would be different. However, I offered to discuss any necessary changes and advise my preferences, in case it could not be drawn exactly the way I wanted. This took another month(!) to do, "custom design", no one ever came back to me, discussed/questioned anything, when finally at the end of January 2020 I was given the preparation of plans agreement to sign. I met a different FHBD representative for the sign off. When it was presented the document it did not have any of the luxury inclusions, discussed originally and I questioned that and he inserted some of them in front of me, for some there were "provisions" done. This was the first time I saw the new design as well. It needed changing... "It could be done at pre-start" I was told. By that point I still have not heard anything from the finance broker and was worried, because the I had to provide the confirmation to the land company in the early February. I had been in contact with the original sales representative and he assured he'd sort it out with the land company to give me extension if needed. Had my pre-start done mid February and requested variations this took another three weeks, plust structural changes, which meant the price was changing. By this time I was loosing my patience, but eventually they prepared the building contract and it was signed mid February. In the end around 25th of Feb have received the message from the broker, saying he was requesting valuations. And this was the last time I've heard from him. I had occasional calls from the sales rep to "check on me" and I would constantly mention that the whole process takes forever! Minor changes, like changing the length of the interanal wall takes too long to update, and if a few changes requested, they would come back with one thing updated and the rest ignored and it goes for updates again and again I wait and wait for weeks.. I requested the pricing for the prestart specifications and still don't know because I would be getting partial information around every fortnight... So this lasted a month and a half. I still don't know what would be the final price of the house and I would never know. In the beginning of April, here I was - not able to finalise quotations as I had no pricing, no information on finace (approved, not approved or declined, or anything), land contract overdue by two months, have no confirmation if anything been submitted to the council for approval... I have had enough and I cancelled the land. I moved into a rental property In January, hoping to be in my own house mid year, this will definitely not happenning now... Being a single mom is hard enought, and realisation that I wasted 6 months and I was not even close to building stage, makes me completely gutted. But! This is not the end of the story - because now FHBD is chasing me to pay additional $3,300 (on top of $2,000 deposit) for the works they claim they have done and enormous anount of hours they spent on me.... So, this is what it's been for me to be with FHBD - be "taken for a ride" for half a year and left homeless with a debt of $5,000.

contract there broker lead us on constantly for five months asking for the same information and promising dates we never heard back from the builder or broker also being threatened by the consultant at one stage.

After not being able to get hold of anyone we had to go into the office to cancel the build they claimed they did 10k of works and stole our deposit forcing us to take legal action don’t trust these people they will take you for a ride

over priced, pathetic resolution skills – The relationship soured very rapidly with FHBD when Key start Valued the build at $60,000 over the median price range. the only feedback we received is that we added a front veranda for $4,000.00 and patio at $14,000.00 and we should look at the smaller block around the corner. At no point did we receive a credit for not building the theatre room.… Read more

The upgrades were rather modest and not high end, which we later found that most other builders include them as standard. In hind sight the bells should have started ringing when there was only ever 1 house design and floor plan provided the LAGUNA, which they do not have a display home to show, and they do not have pictures of the house to show you. despite this being there preferred house for 12.5 metre frontage block. The salesman showed us a beautiful display home in Byford, however it was totally irrelevant to our build or even remotely similar to what our house design was. Make sure when you first start asking questions that anything the salesman says is included, you get it in writing. i.e insulation to the patio, exhaust fan to main bathroom, 900 mm stainless steel oven, the house deposit is refundable, ( let me assure you it is not). Our finance broker issued a letter of decline based on the above house and land package offered by FHBD saying it was a financially poor decision to go ahead with the finance.

When I asked for a mutual letter of termination to the contract there was no further contact with the salesman. [name removed] this was escalated via email to the manager, where he was even less help than [name removed]. Another 4 weeks have passed since i asked for my letter of mutual termination of contract and some of my deposit back, however the manager has also buried his head in the sand.

Parting words for all you considering building with FHBD. please do yourself a favour and shop around. the Laguna 3 bed 2 bath we were going to build in Haynes with lake front view, had a finishing cost of around $470,00.00 another builder had a 4 bed 2 bath same street same views, and the block was 30 square metres smaller than ours for $380,000.00 with all the same upgrades we had, and more.

FHBD use the logo"Building trust through professionalism & transparency" in their email signature. i have yet to see any.

Its a definite shame i had to give 1 star. make it minus 10 .

have finance approval and were assured that if we changed out mind that we would get all our money back.

1 business day later we decided we would rather buy than build, due to personal circumstances. We were verbally assured that we would get all our money back, but we needed it in writing, so 1 hour later after sending the email, we were told that we won't get it back as they went ahead with planning the block since we had pre-approval. We did not have pre-approval and had proof, in fact, 2 business days later we did not qualify to build. Yet they still kept our money.

After speaking with a lawyer and [name removed] who gave me the run around, we were assured a FULL refund but he was on "annual leave and out of the office", refunds are done at the end of the month, so it will be done in September (this was conversation was well before the end of August).

Obviously there was not much I could do so I waited but made sure I got proof over email that a FULL refund will be done at the end of September.

So I waited and long story short, after run around after run around, our refund wasn't even processed on the end of the month, I had to call them everyday for a week straight to get anything out of them, after promises of calling me back. They FINALLY processed the refund and kept $240. Obviously the lawyer fees to get that back is not worth it. I'm just glad it's over.

I don't deny that they are a reputable builder and do quality homes, but for your own good, get finance approval FIRST!!!! And do not pay ANY deposit. We were not aware of the intention of the meeting when we were to pay the deposit, they will try anything to get your money!!!

had our concerns. The sales rep, who I wont name, organised a meeting, did a quick figure of both our incomes, and told us there on the spot, "yeah, you guys are more than eligible!" Now, you can imagine how we both would've felt. (like seriously? what?!) We couldn't believe it. As weeks progressed, and we started to go further into the plans, getting more excited as we were selecting tiles, carpet etc.. I kept asking the sales rep, how much is this going to cost?? always with an answer that led to a tangent. Never actually getting an idea of how much this was going to cost us. This kept going for weeks... So we ended up doing our research, eventually coming up with a number that was wayyyy beyond our weekly budget. It wasn't until we decided that we were going to pull the plug on the idea, he then pulled out our file and threatened us with legal action. Saying we had signed documents, and its too late to back out..

We felt sick. I was driving us home, trying to stomach the fact we were going to be in debt over half a million dollars. My partner was in tears, i was stressed. i felt like there was nothing i could do. We received advice from several sources, and we got out of the dodgy deal with the devil.

After dealing with this, you can imagine how we would've felt about building a house. We were dead set against the idea, and didn't want to think about it. Then one afternoon, I got introduced to a friend of a friend. His name is Craig Sharp. Very polite young man, had a great chat with him just about life in general. I explained my horror story to him about the building company, and he listened. Craig Sharp won my trust from the start. Excellent communication skills. Took all the advanced stuff and simplified it in a way a monkey could understand.

Every promise Craig Sharp made, he has delivered on. As far as our location preference, our style of home, and most importantly, the cost. It has been a long tedious process, im not going to lie.. Death by paper work and signatures, but its all part of the fun.

heard about first home buyers direct from a work colleague, who handed my number to Kees who called me up asking if I’d like them to draw me up some plans and basically persuade me to sign up with them instead, which by this point my wife and I were told by the initial company we would be going to site within a few months (which was far from true).

We decided to give it a go and see who could get us to site quicker as we had been trying to get our house built for two years at this point. I was and still am impressed by how quickly and professional Kees Kreemer and the team went through all of the previous company’s paper work (which was an absolute mess) and had a finished product, turn key house to sign off on with fixed prices on site works, which no other builder we had spoken to was willing to do as we are building in a rocky area.

Another notable improvement between Kees and the team versus our previous builder is how they undertake business. I felt as though with the previous builder I was spoon feeding them on how to build a house, (and by no means have I any experience on how to build a house) any time an issue would arise I would have to research or ask around to find a solution. Where as with Kees and the team if there was a problem I would be given a choice of solutions each with a different outcome, so even when there was an issue (which have been small at best) I have still had full control on the outcome. In my option the best part about first home buyers direct is the way that they handle their customers, so myself doing fifo and my wife working with two small children at home. It has been a relief to have Kees backing our corner as we feel that we can call him anytime about anything that may be troubling us about our build. Even now with our slab just going down Kees gave us a call to see how everything has going ensuring that it is going smoothly and still encourages us to call if anything is or has been troubling us with the build. Which again is more than what we can say about the previous builder who repeatedly couldn’t get my wife’s name correct, in person or on emails. As well as constantly changing our point of contact till we couldn’t work out who was who.

So I guess in conclusion, if we were to build again although we haven’t finished our build yet I am quite confident that we would chose Kees and the team to build another house for us.

Perfection – 1. My build was well managed. 2.issues were well handled and very satisfied with the out come. 3. Finally cost was cheaper than the estimate.
