I dont ever write reviews but this one couldn't resist. Building our forever home was supposed to be a highlight of our lives, but Home Group—specifically our pre-start consultant [Name Removed] has turned it into a nightmare of anxiety and regret. We entered our pre-start meeting with a $30,000 upgrade budget, ready to invest in our dream.… Read more

Instead, we walked away spending only $12,000, not because we were being frugal, but because we were actively discouraged and misled by [Name Removed]. Every time we asked for an upgrade we truly wanted, we were met with an "exhausted" attitude and verbal price-gouging designed to scare us off.

For example:

Square-Set Ceilings: she told us it would be $5,000+. We have now found out from other clients it is a $600upgrade. I would have 100% proceeded if I were given the correct price.

Electrical Upgrades: We wanted Arteor Mirror White switches; she dismissed us with a verbal estimate of $4,000–$5,000 without even checking.

Feature Paint: We were told a dark theatre room would cost $800 ($200 per wall) and would likely be rejected anyway. Other clients got it for $153.

We had to constantly ask if upgrades were available. Upon request, she finally showed us carpets, but otherwise, she did not even offer them. Many of these items were pre-selected in the portal prior to the meeting, but she had not looked at the portal or our emails at all. She didn't even bother to mention standard options like robe fit-out upgrades or tile-insert floor wastes, along with many others.

Furthermore, she blatantly said no splashback or tile upgrades were available and that we had to pick from the five tiles in the base range provided. We had to find out these existed after a friend recently did his pre-start with a different consultant. As a "professional" consultant, it was her job to show us the range. Instead, she sat there entering data for 20 minutes at a time while we sat there doing nothing, then she blamed us for the meeting running over.

Because of her laziness and blatant misrepresentation of costs, we are now mid-construction on a home that is missing the features we wanted. Because of her poor way of working, the signing got delayed, which opened the clause that the 14-week site start need not be honored; hence, the site start took 6 months.

Pre-start has always been the most exciting day in all our builds except for this one. Our selections with wider ranges have always concluded by midday. But here, a lazy and incompetent employee got us doubting the builder itself.

person insisted if drafting team allowed then it mean it will pass the developer guidelines. I find they are not transparent with their costing. My mistake was leaving it to my sales person to decide for me as I trust they know better.

COLOR SELECTION - Then came onto our selections, we had to fork out extras due to this. Our color selection coordinator did not guide us through well. She simply point out these are what they have and jjust kept quiet. It will be helpful to give opnions and inform us we have other options. Some things were missed our, like the extra ceiling truss, and now we had to just do it after construction.

CONSTRUCTION - Our site cut started quite efficiently, it was smooth sailing with our client liaison Fresh. She was efficient, quick to response. Nothing to fault her. She was the best. Our site supervisor on the other hand, was not as friendly. Works seems to be slow (which many had mentioned and I was expecting this). I had a private inspector as well, I would submit the report the same day. I should recieve the rectification reports by a week or 2, but, 2 stages had passed, I have yet to recieve them. I am at the final stage now. When my client liaison changed, things got worst. When I email for an update as I did not hear of any progress, the only thing I was told was to look at the portal myself. Sadly, not a single picture was upload and progress was not updated. When I ask for the rectification reports, I was just simply told to wait. Communication was really bad. My emails get replied almost a week later. I felt my build was unimportant as I had really a very standard build. My SS wasn't really very helpful as well.

Current status - still awaiting handover, passed our 5 months now almost to 6, still on track I suppose.

This is an honest review which I feel might help others looking for a review. For those who can wait. I think they have good tradies who support them, but they do take their time. They have a good build i think but I am not a builder to say this and I have yet to stay there.

Take away for those looking for a build - make sure you request all upgrades during sales and not color selection. Allow an extra variation in your price build as you do not have to fork out cash after you sign the HIA. Take note they charge you for engaging a private inspector. Which cost 2k. And you have to fork out cash for it. I think many builders dont charge them. If you have the time to wait out, they are good. If I have a choice again, I would not build again with them sadly. I think WA team are better, but not here in VIC is guess.

Don't build with homegroup, they will rip you off. I have built twice before and haven't encountered a builder like this. My wife had lost her job and still unemployed and our chance of getting pre approval from the bank has now all but diminished. know we had signed a contract but they knew we still were subject to getting finance pre approved and we hadn't even finalised our colours selection. Now I'm threatened that if I don't pay the $2000 by the 23rd January it will go to there managements legal team. This is why no one should sign a contract until you do your colours appointment no hidden surprises. Go with some like Henley Homes as you don't sign any contract until after you do your colours appointment and you are satisfied with your cost.

I have a terrible experience with Home Group. The moment I signed the contract, I started receiving the variation $1600. I thought it would be a one-off item, but today I have $15,000 variation for my site cost. I have already paid $18,000 as the fixed site cost, despite the builder charging me an additional $15,000. Furthermore, at the initial stage, when the builder provided the soil report, the additional site cost wasn't detected; however, the moment I signed the HIA contract, these issues began to surface.
