Honda Civic 10th Gen (Hatchback) (2016-2021)

Best car I have owned. Put the fun back into driving. Comfortable, practical, reliable and very easy to live with. Does what it should with no surprises. Enough tech to be safe but you still have to drive it. Enough power to have some get up and go but only a 1.6 liter turbo motor so 6 or 7 liters per 100 ks. Being a smaller car, you cant see past 4wd trucks but you can fit in shrinking car parks.
2017 model Honda civic had done 140,000kms and transmission basically imploded, I wouldn’t go anywhere near Honda, absolutely rubbish quality of car and customer service to match. Have reported this to Honda and was told I should have towed my car to a Honda dealer a week after this happened so they could have a look, as if I can be without my car whilst they investigate to likely tell me it’s out of warranty. My recommendation is don’t buy one Show details
Best car and joy to drive – 2021 VTI-S Civic, best car I have ever owned. Handles incredibly well, corners well and hugs the road. Love the spacious Hatch and sporty exterior. Daily driver and always enjoy driving it regardless. Serviced every 10000kms / twice a year for fixed price Honda servicing @$120. Absolute bargain and never has missed a beat. Extremely reliable. 10/10 all round Show details

In-depth reviews
Ticks lots of boxes – It's a great car, purchased the non Turbo with the aging 1.8 engine for reliability. After reading the Honda turbo issues lately, I'm glad I did. Had this car for little more than 2 years now, with 30k on the clock, here are my personal pros and cons. Pros: - Spacious and very practical - Reasonably quiet and comfortable - Not as quiet as… Read more
Golf and Impreza, but drives better imho.
- Android Auto and Apple carplay connectivity is great and stable on the 4 phones I tested.
- 7 years unlimited km warranty (promotion) - Finally a Honda product without the rip off 6 months service interval, but....
Cons:
- Service interval set at a tricky 10k or once a year, whichever comes first,.. that means twice a year service for most anyway, at almost $600, if you drive more than 10k per year. Interval at every 15k like most others, would have been great.
- Rattle sound, around A-Pillar and fixed vents on top of dash. Not an isolated case, at least for the 2017/2018 builts. Unsure about the newer ones.
- Roof metal sheet is super, super soft, bents easier and more than a Chinese plastic takeaway container. I noticed it while hand washing.
- Passengers seat height adjustment would have been great. Way too low to get in and out for many. Mom and girlfriend prefer the backseats therefore.
- minimum Unleaded 91 fuel required. Runs super smooth on 98, on 91 however it jerks a little once in a while and a noticeable performance drop, on mine anyway.
Hope that helps
Honda’s definition of parking sensor limitation - ‘car wash’ is categorised under ‘bad weather’ – I purchased a Brand-New Honda Civic from Austral Honda in May 19. The parking sensors are faulty and go off whenever they’re getting wet. They keep beeping for days After rain or car-wash, even without anything in front. Initially the dealer tried to talk me over that it’s normal for parking sensors to go off in the rain. Just because so many… Read more
people around me have parking sensors in their cars, I didn’t buy what they said. After contacted their service department for a few times, they told me Honda Australia is still waiting for a new counter measure parts to be released for the parking sensor grill. The waiting period can be up to 1 year, and I have to follow up the solution by myself as the service department wouldn’t be able to remember which cars have the sensor problems.
Apparently, this is a well-noted issue to Honda, but they didn’t do their due diligence to check. If customers were UNLUCKY to pick up the car on a sunny day, then they wouldn’t be able to find out the problem until it’s raining or washed the car. After I made a complaint and requested a car replacement, their customer service called me and told me to read the car manual without an apology for the inconvenience caused. In fact, the manual doesn’t mention rain or water would create issues to the parking sensor at all. When I said that, their customer service was surprised and told me he would go and read the manual and then call me back. Our conversation only lasted for 1 minute, and I was shocked by their unprofessional customer service. On the following day, he called and told me " the manual doesn't mention of rain but does mention of bad weather, so “rain water” and “car wash” are all categorised under the bad weather." I don’t know if any normal people would believe car-wash is related to bad weather?!
Regardless it's raining or car wash, the parking sensor should only go off when the car is approaching to objects, otherwise it’s not fit for purposes. However, once the car is sold, they don’t care about customers’ safety and the risk/loss we may face. Then what’s the whole point to spend extra money on those SAFETY features, when customer can’t use it from the very beginning and Honda doesn’t give a sh*t to safety. If there is any problem, they only find any ridiculous excuses to avoid taking responsibilities for the failure of their products, which doesn’t help customers instead make us more frustrated.
It has been 4 months since I made the purchase, there is still no solution. I paid lots of money on a BRAND NEW car just in order to have a hassle-free experience, but unfortunately see what I get. Before you make a decision to buy a Honda, rethink of the product quality you may get, and most importantly what kind of irresponsible customer service you will have to deal with!!!
My Favourite Car - Better than a Prelude – I love this car! I have just passed 5000km and have had it for 3 months. There are a lot of negatives on journalist reviews but I think they are all bunk. Firstly, it is easy to forget the touchscreen while driving, you simply use the wheel control to skip a song or backtrack - or change to radio, bluetooth or Android or Apple car play - whatever… Read more
you want! Volume also on the wheel. You can also put whatever image you want on the touchscreen - it is like an iPad.
I have navigation on screen or via Android - and the safety features on VTi-LX, like lane keep assist and cruise with multiple (4) settings is a blast - it will even drive itself for awhile - if you are game! But you can lazily just hang onto the wheel while it steers for you when the lanes are well marked! Side camera - rear camera and parking alerts are as good as our Golf (many similar features).
It is NOT a V8 and if you want sub 6 sec 1-100 performance - then get a V8 and burn 15+ litres per 100km - this thing will get between 5 - 7.5 l/100 km no matter what the traffic. But I need to get this very clear - if you put your foot down hard or use Sports mode or paddles - the 1.5 turbo Civic responds brilliantly! It simply loves to be pushed and the little turbo is happiest with a few revs under it. This is also the case on winding mountain roads. Not dynamite but Very Zippy! 6 cyl Fords and Holdens etc seem sluggish by comparison 6.9s 1-100 is about right. I have had a Honda Prelude Si and Honda Accord Euro 2.4 and this seems to be faster than both. Its handling is reminiscent of the Prelude - which was my previous best car.
The quality fit-out is all Honda - which means zero buzzes or creaks or signs of poor finish - leather is excellent quality.
It carries so much stuff with the back seats down, it feel like the Mazda 6 wagon that we compared and can take large drawers, coffee tables, carpets etc. The Mazda is slightly longer (maybe 30cm?) but the Civic's flexibility to carry stuff is excellent.
Rear seats: the USB in the centre console can reach into the back - no problem. My son is 6ft 1in and he finds the rear to be plenty big enough with good leg room.
One complaint is the lack of an electric passenger seat - and no raise / lower settings.
Braking and handling is excellent and the car sits very flat on the road and does not roll. Later I might re-program the ECU for more performance, but I don't actually think it needs that, unless you want to go to the track. I sit on 130 on the freeway a lot and it still gets under 6 l/100 and pulls up any hill and over takes with ease. I even have a tow-bar and towed a big moving van 50km - car is a bit light for this but no real problem.
Get one!
Honda is back - I am sure the Type-R will chew up and spit out any V8 as well - and use less petrol - so if you want insane performance get one of them!

Amazing car – Bought new in 2020, RS model with 1.5 litre turbo engine. Every aspect of this car oozes class and refinement. It is nimble and refined on the road, and looks sensational. A huge step up from my similarly priced Mazda 3.; Show details
One of the best cars I have owned – I use this car for all of my driving needs. I use this just about everyday. Car gets serviced every 10,000 km Only issue I have had was sensors on front grill were going on when nothing near this was fixed very quickly under Warranty Design fault Otherwise I am very happy with this car Customer service brilliant I believe that I will have many more years of driving with this car Show details
Best. Car. EVER! – My first Civic was purchased in 1999 and was a-mazing! Reliable, sporty, economical and fantastic resale. Nothing changed with any of that with the latest model. Honda driver for life! Show details · 2

I love my car, but… – The car is great, I love it, but (living where I do) I would never buy another Honda because the allocated service location (an hour away at Maitland) is unsatisfactory. I have to allow a whole day off to get my car serviced, they were unable to fix the problem with the central locking system (and insisted on gaslighting me that there was no… Read more
problem, despite the technician managing to lock my keys in the car), which I managed to fix myself! My next car will be bought locally, after researching both the car, and service quality.
2021 VTI-L Honda Civic Cruise Control – With cruise control on Australian models you cannot turn off the adaptive cruise that slows you down when approaching another slower vehicle, your vehicle slows down to their speed. Bloody annoying on long drives on dual lane freeways. It can be turned off on overseas models. Show details
Oil dilution problems – 4th new Honda and possibly the worst. The new earth dreams 1.5l turbo motor has an oil dilution problem. I first noticed this when I checked the oil. The oil dipstick smelt of raw petrol and the level on the dip stick was 16mm above full. This is apparently a well known problem with the 1.5t turbo. I contacted Honda Australia - they referred me to… Read more
my local Honda dealer. I wrote to them over a month ago and no reply. I plan on doing my own independent oil analysis and go to Honda armed with the results before their excuses start. I am afraid my only solution to do oil changes more frequently (every 5000km) or keep driving, do the 10,000 /6 month service and cross my fingers. I suspect this motor is wearing fast due to petrol in the oil. Honda... you will be hearing from me again. I won’t let this issue go. Buyer beware!!!
Don’t deny the problem Honda helpers. My Honda rs 100% has an oil dilution problem!!! Buyer beware… Read more (+7 replies)

Absolutely love my car! – Use my car everyday either to travel 20 up and back to work or for weekend drives. So reliable! Love the sunroof and heated seats- cools fast in summer and warms fast in winter! Super comfy, sporty and safe. Show details · 1
Love it!! – I love the look of new Honda Civic. I like the hatch better than sedan as it looks more sporty. Love the fuel efficiency as well. Shameful customer treatment – A very good friend of mine bought a brand new HONDA CIVIC about six weeks ago . Apparently as she was driving through Galston Gorge near Sydney . Now I am a 67 year old male and if I was there at the time I would have had a few not so nice words to tell him.
What a shame full display of contempt to the customer.
My friend has always liked HONDAS and against my recommendation to buy Hyundai .
HONDA SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES TO HAVE SUCH A TOTAL A>>>>E AS THEIR REPRESENTATIVE..
Pretty good, but for the electronics – Used this car to travel to a remote area of Central Australia. Averaged 5.6 litres per 100km over 4000km. (Best 5.3, worst 6.1. Advertised as 6.0, so better than claimed) Handled some fairly rough dirt roads well, and was comfortable. We found the clock reset itself a couple of times inaccurately and with running lights on, as recommended in… Read more

Great product – I use this car every day great car has more space than it seems. It's my every day car . Its services regularly. Has not had any issues. The only problem I would have preferred a manual but it only came in auto. But it's still a great car would recommend it Show details

An awesome driving experience – I just bought a VTI-S and it is a great car that handles well and has lots of options that are smart which makes it a nicer driving experience. For example, the keyless ignition and the parking brake is a button. Overall an excellent car that is a lovely colour. I would buy again (and actually hubby is really considering it). Show details
Perfect Economical Car – We bought two Honda Civics a 2016 sedan and a 2017 hatch from Honda Mornington and the cars have been perfect. The car runs well and is economical run and maintain. no other car i’ve owned. Seats are very race inspired which have little adjustment and that’s the only reason i traded it.
Mind you i do have a bad back.
Besides that i cannot fault the car i would full throttle it everywhere i go and still average 9ltrs per 100k.
First day i picked it up i had people filming down eastlink as nothing else looks like it.... except maybe the rs, lol
My opinion is if you want a drivers car and not too worried about comfort definitely buy one.
Bang for your buck!! – The new honda civic is truly a unique vehicle. At first I did not like the styling features at all, but gradually the grew on me. When I was in the market looking for a new car, the civic stood out above the rest of its competitors. Standard features such as digital speedometer, multimedia system, and reverse cam all stood out for me. Although I… Read more
went with thr base model, I am happy with my purchase as the top of the range was almost 15k more. The civic is very roomy and has a very elegant layout making it nice and simple to drive. I used to own a new corolla before this and I am very happy with this purchase. Fuel consumption is great for a 1.8L.
Overall, I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who is in the market for a hatchback as it offers alot more than its competitors such as mazda, toyota and hyundai.

Great little car – I've always owned a Honda and upgrading to the new Honda Civic VTI MY17 hatch (base model) was a no brainer. previous driving experience to my old Honda car and I can say its a huge improvement - its smooth, powerful and steering is very responsive. The car overall is surprisingly spacious for a "small" car and long drives re comfortable for driver and passengers. The cost to run is really cheap too, depending on the cost of fuel it usually never costs me more than $50 to fill from empty - and that's when petrols 1.49 per litre.
Fantastic Daily With Plenty of Fun – This is without a doubt the best value for a performance car on the market in it's category. If you are chasing 0-100 times, this is not the car for you - do not be deceived by the FWD system. The interchangeable comfort settings are significant and the fuel economy is about 8.4L/100km with some spirited driving. The only disappointment is the exhaust note as it could be a little more aggressive but there are always aftermarket options.
Perfect little car – Despite its small size, the Honda Civic feels extremely solid and steady. The driving experience is great as the performance of the car is more than enough within the city/urban areas. The car has many smart features equipped, as does most newer models. The shape of the car is beautiful and very unique compared to the other cars on the roads today. I would definitely recommend this car!! Show details

road trips. Boot is spacious as well, can fit around 2 large luggage + small ones. Interior has that plastic feel but you get for what you pay for. Touchscreen apple android play is probably the best upgrade Honda did from their previous gen. So far, car has no issues and running costs (driving 50km a day) costs me around $40 per week in petrol which is considered pretty good!
Love my Civic – When the time finally came to upgrade my car I really wasn't sure what I was looking for. After test driving a number of vehicles I decided on a Honda Civic Hatch.
