Hydrotherm Dynamic/X8
Reviewer Photos & Videos
I have had the Dynamic X8 for a couple of months now in Melb SE. It was installed by Melbourne Heat Pumps – their service was exemplary and I’d recommend them.
The unit itself was chosen after careful comparison with what I considered to be the other most viable competitor – the Reclaim or Sanden unit (they seem to be almost the same apart from the tank options). Compared with the Hydrotherm, either of those units would have cost approximately double to install – possibly even more because they require a dedicated 20A circuit to be installed a...
Read moret the same time. Here are the pros and cons as I’ve experienced them in my house of 2 adults + 2 kids over the last couple of months. Pros: • Interface is nice/modern – with promise of Wi-Fi connectivity later this year • Unit is relatively compact compared with split systems • Efficient – have been monitoring with TP-Link P110 and averaging 3kWh/day so far (running power draw is about 7-800W and standby draw is only 4W)Purchased in for $2,665.

After experiencing several technical issues with the previous model (Dynamic SS/X8/OP) we were very pleased that Hydrotherm decided to replace it with the new model Dynamic/X8. During the time waiting to receive the replacement system, Hydrotherm supplied a temporary and smaller hot water system that got us by which was appreciated.
The new unit is significantly quieter and is performing well supplying plenty of hot water for a growing family of four. I have it set to operate during the day utilising my solar panels that comfortably serve ...

Power consumption for a two adult household for the first few weeks is averaging 2.2kWh per day. Gotta be happy with that. The heat pump is installed indoors (albeit an aircraft hangar so a huge space) where the average inside ambient temperature for June was 18 degrees. Supply and delivery were very professional with the unit arriving within 30 minutes of when they said it would. Build quality is on par with units that I have seen from brands established in the Australian market. I used my own plumber for the install and he was very happy with the installation process. Hydrotherm is about the least expensive heat pump unit on the market but I do not think that equates to least quality.
Will report back in five years...

We have the unit for 9 months or so and it has performed very well in summer. Now winter time it takes a bit longer to recover but is still working to our full satisfaction. The timer on the unit is invaluable as we have a offpeak charge and the unit is set to heat within the 5 hour time frame.

Just installed but so far no problems at all. Exceptional advice, service & Installation was provided by Gavin at Melbourne Heat Pumps. His guidance on available rebates saved us $1600. Availability of service and help from Hydotherm is a great reassurance moving forward. Hydrotherm manual provided with the unit and available to download online illustrates a different control panel than the one we have on the unit, but is easy to follow anyway.

This is currently the most cost justifiable Heat Pump system on the market, about half the cost of Sanden or Reclaim Heat Pump. Hydrotherm has labour & parts warranty of 6 years similar to Sanden.
Reclaim has only 2 years labour warranty which is also capped at 25km and the parts & system warranty is 6 years.
Hydrotherm Dynamic/X8 supply cost around $2.8k
less $1.1k STC, less $1k if you qualify for heat pump hot water system rebate
labour was $800+ which includes removal & disposal of existing gas HWS and capping existing gas line.
With the current market these numbers may have already changed.

Our original Hydrotherm was replaced with the new Dynamic/X8 under warranty. Very good after sales service. Solar power and the timer helps to reduce heating costs. The unit always copes with our family's needs.

No problems with install and was a simple changeover. Had the smaller old model Volt for a round 6 years and changed it over for a new model for a good price. They have a very reasonable running cost and would recommend them.

Our original system had a leak under warranty. We contacted the Hydrotherm team and the were on the job straight away. The replacement arrived and was fitted by experts. The team took us through the step by step of what to do for our new warranty. It all went very well and we have had follow up call to ensure all is well. What more could a customer ask for? We were treated like royalty.

We haven't had any issue with quantity even after I set timer to run only during the peak period for our solar panels. The big test was over Easter as we had 7 adults staying with showers and washing over the 4 days and we never ran out.

It's installed and operational but we're not living in the house yet.
Unit runs for less than an hour each day when no hot water is used, temperature drops a few degrees overnight.
When we have used hot water I've noticed unit does not start when temperature drops by only a few degrees below set temperature even when still in on time set by timer. When we use a lot of hot water unit starts. As the house has solar power I would have preferred the unit to start as soon as temperature drops so that we have plenty of hot water in the morning and us...

We have a Hydrotherm gas fired boiler for central heating and hot water supply for the kitchen. Can we convert to a heat pump operation and, if so, what is the estimated cost?
