When turning on the IKEA Otrolig induction cooktop, I get a "d" on the left side and an "E" on the right side. Turning on power to a cooking zone to heat does not work. Switches off after 1 minute. What does "dE" mean as a code? Is this another way of saying the appliance is "dEad"?

In case anyone else is searching for a fix for this problem: dE means the cooktop is in demo mode (where you can play around with the controls without activating the cooking zones). I accidentally activated demo mode on my Otrolig recently and couldn't find any info on how to deactivate it. Nothing in the user manual for this model. Ikea customer service were no help either. Eventually I figured it out by trial and error, so here is the solution in case it helps the next person! Switch the cooktop off at the wall, then on again. Within 60 seconds, press the two middle P buttons together for 5 seconds and demo mode will be deactivated.

Is it really that bad? I am dismayed as I just bought one but I haven’t installed it yet.

To be honest, after using it for a few years, as a straight forward hob it's good. The flexizone feature is still a pain. The hotspots still occur but I have learned to stir the food around more regularly when using that function, which these days is rare as you have to stand next to it and constantly stir and move food around from the edges. I have not had any of the issues mentioned by the other reviewers with the hob changing the heat setting by itself. The buttons can be sensitive so you have to be careful not to brush your finger over the number settings and accidentally turn up the heat and walk away. As far as the hob turning off if anything splashes, it's a safety feature and has saved me multiple times when I've had things boil over while I was out of the kitchen. I bought it for the flexizone feature so my disappointment was towards that specifically. It's going strong though and I've not had any other issues with it so far. Hope that helps.

Lilpil, Thankyou for taking the time to reply. I think we will give it a go now that’s given me more confidence.
