Anyone else recently bought Moccona Classic 5 and it tastes disgusting ? I buy this all the time but this last batch is revolting.

Yes!!!! I bought a large jar and it tastes disgusting, smells odd and tastes burnt.

It’s unbelievable that brand Moccona thinks it’s even coffee. They are now a Brand of poop!

I thought I was the only one, i am glad that I posted previously in relation to this product as it seems to be a recurring scenario. My suggestion is to keep complaining to the coffee company and demand a refund or exchange credit.

Why does my jar have Classic 8. Is it meant to be Indulgence 8 or Classic 5?

Is Moccona Classic 5 Medium roast Caffeinated? It is advertised on Google therefore answer on Google.

I don’t actually drink the Classic 5 but it is definitely caffeinated. Moccona does do a decaf though which I think Coles and Woolworths stock

What's the point of asking a question? It falls on deaf ears. You simply don't care. All about the money. The stuff is crap and you know it STOP lying to us all. Destroyed an icon. Bugger your french flavour. Angry furious over how we consumers have been jilted. Just another BIG company doing what they please. Disgraceful Moccona.

HI I've just opened a no 8 dark roast Moccona and its awful, did they change it too, expiry 18//12/2020, what a waste of so much money, any hints on making it palatable?

Fair Go

Consider Moccona a drain cleaner these days !. Best instant coffee's are: Natures Cuppa, 100% Arabica Freeze Dried Organic Coffee 100g $8 at Woolworths, Coles own brand Freeze Dried Organic 100g $4.50 or best of all, Aldi's Colombian Freeze Dried coffee 100g for $3.25 (when available). Nescafe has added a "Colombian" jar ($11 for 100g) to their range which is 100% Arabica and tastes great. The good thing is Nescafé does not make this coffee, its from the same people that made Carte Noire instant coffee. Hope this helps. bye

Wow, I am lucky that I don't drink Moccona enough to tell the difference between the old blend and the new, but I do notice that there is a distict aftertaste that reminds me of tobacco. That cannot be good. I don't understand the arrogance of the company to change what was working, to something that makes so many consumers unhappy. Moccona.....you stupid fools!!

Barry

Is the current classic medium roast number 5 now made to the old recipe ????

Have Moccona issued an apology for the pain and anguish caused by the dumb decision to tamper with their customers favourite coffee blend ???

I want to go back to Maconna, but only if I will be getting the very same !!!

Barry

Nope, it’s still the new disgusting blend. Don’t waste your money.

I have been drinking Moccona number 5 for over 20 years. In my opinion is it back to the original flavour, without the burnt coffee bean taste. Also, make sure you buy a jar with a use by date (on bottom of jar) from 18/09/2020 or after that date.. Also, you will notice the new jars don't have printed on the label "New improved aroma". I think you will be happy with the taste and agree with me once you try a new jar.

Barry
Barry

Thanks, My use by date is currently 2/21 and has no richer aroma label It does not have the horrible burnt smell and flavour, but I and not sure it is what I have been using for decades. I think it is stronger than it was. Perhaps I have to start again and get used to it, if it is not quite the same as the old one Thanks again for your response. Will we ever get a notification from Maccona do you think ??? Barry

I would laugh if another coffee company used Moccona's TV advert from the 1980's to show what people think of Moccona these days. If you have forgotten, people in the TV advert would run out of a home vomiting because they were served something other than Moccona. Seems Moccona has forgotten their own TVC. Umm. bye

Why is the coffee so so bitter now. It is unpleasant to drink and you have forced me to try other coffee in the search to find one similar to your old style medium classic 5 roast. Can you please go back to the way you used to roast it as it was perfect before... please

WillG

I can’t say with 100% certainty but I have heard they changed processing plants in Europe, probably to save money. They reckon they did the full product testing and consumer consultation process so I’d love to meet the panel that signed off on this rubbish. Try the organic fair trade freeze dried coffee from Coles, it’s not as nice as the old number 5 but better than the new rubbish.

Reg P.

We have tried most of your so called new style coffee and wasted our money on total crap. My guests always praised my coffee and I proudly told them it was Moccona no. 5. Not any more and taking the new and improved sticker of the label can not disguise the terrible taste it now has, (very sneaky). I still took it back to the store for a refund. so your coffee and I are both very bitter, your's in taste and me in your lack of notice and consideration to your customer's pleading for the original recipe. I would like an email back from you with an answer to my question When is the original moccona medium roast recipe coming to our stores?? Mrs Julie Poulson

Boris Yasminsky
Boris Yasminsky

Julie/Reg - give up on Moccona and Nescafe and try Aldi's Fair Trade Colombian instant coffee. At $3.50 for 100g, not only is the price amazing but you will probably agree that its the best instant coffee ever. As with most Colombian coffee's, they are very high in flavour and very smooth. Two teaspoons makes a perfect brew. Cheers

Deborah H.
Deborah H.

I haven't had a chance to find an alternative . I did buy a jar of Moccona French style #3 to help disguise the taste of #5. It's ok, but I feel I don't want to support Moccona. Instead, after reading responses below I will be firstly returning the remains of my #5 Moccona to Woolworths and they can send it back to the distributor. Then I will try either the Aldi Fair Trade Colombian instant coffee, mentioned above, or Coles Fair Trade organic Freeze, or the Republica Freeze dried instant coffee, or Robert Timms all mentioned below and all seemingly available at Coles. I would be interested in hearing any other recent votes of #5 alternatives. On a final note, my husband has suggested that maybe Moccona is trying to crack the American market and have changed the taste to accommodate them. Which explains in part why the coffee now is so bleh.

Fair Go

"Natures Cuppa Organic" only from Woolworths. Beautiful and just a bit stronger than Aldi's Columbian coffee. Really, these are the only two instant coffee's on any of the supermarket shelves these days worth drinking. Bye

We have found Robert Timms Premium Espresso to be pretty good. It costs $8 for 200g at Woolworths. We tried RT's Premium Full Bodied granulated coffee but found the Espresso a better match. Moccona, are you going to listen to your customers and return to the original Classic 5 flavour or continue to ignore the very had reviews on this site? How long can you allow this to go on ? Why don't you return to the original and make the "richer flavour" a different blend ie Moccona 7.

We have been buying Moccona Medium Roast Classic in 400g for some ten years now fantastic love it, purchased one the other day and it tasted like it was burnt don't like this one at all, on the jar it said NOW RICHER AROMA

Does this mean that we are unable to purchase the standard Medium Roast Classic in 400g without NOW RICHER AROMA?

if so think sorry you have lost a customer!

I sent the link to them and got this email reply the next day: "Thank you for contacting Jacobs Douwe Egberts, the home of Moccona, regarding your experience with Moccona Classic Medium Roast Freeze Dried Coffee.

We take all feedback and enquiries to heart and are saddened that you have not enjoyed one of our products.

Our Moccona Brew Masters have recently improved the blend and processes to offer a richer aroma whilst still delivering a high-quality product. We undertook extensive consumer testing which had positive results and a liking for this richer aroma, which delivers a rounded, balanced medium roast flavour.

We believe that this is the difference that you have noted as we have upgraded our coffee brewing processes which has meant we can capture more flavour and aroma from each coffee bean.

If you do prefer a milder blend, we would like to suggest trying our Moccona "French Style No. 3" blend which is a light-medium roast.

Thank you for the link, it is appreciated.

Your comments have been heard and will be passed on to our Brand team.

We hope you enjoy your next Moccona moment."

It seems that they don't want customers any more!

I received the same email response when I sent a complaint in yesterday.. I also called yesterday to complain. Once I mentioned changing the blend, the customer service rep pretended she could not hear me properly and said she would call me back.. After 10 min I phoned again and the same lady answered after she realised it was me calling back.. She pretended not to be able to hear me again.. I could hear her fine.. Have not received a call back yet. Poor, poor, poor.. Will be avoiding.

Rachel

Wow what disgusting customer service you received from Moconna. I too have emailed my disappointment in their new 'recipe', asking why change the #5, just create a #6 if they want a new rich aroma, i also emailed 2 links of bad reviews..... Got the same generic email. No way am i spending another cent on their suggested French style. Moconna have lost me as a customer. After searching for a replacement, no Nescafe is satisfying so I'm now going to try the Coles Organic Gold, it has 5* reviews. .....kicks butt on Moconna 1*. Wonder how long it'll take for moconna to listen to its customers.....when their profits are down I'd say.

NASCAR24

unfortunately it appears that Moccona does not care, they are just forging ahead with their change and if you ring the 1800 number they are plain rude and tell you that you have a problem because you don't like the new flavour.

I also got exactly the same asinine email others have reported here.

schlubadub

They've now removed the "New Richer Aroma" label from jars. I got tricked into thinking I'd found some amazing stockpile of 40+ jars at my local IGA, with only a few showing the "richer aroma" label. My wife wanted to buy and hoard all of them immediately, but I decided to be cautious and only bought one with the plan to make a mad dash back if it was the good stuff. But unfortunately it was the same chemical-tasting crap as the "richer aroma" labelled ones. I haven't verified this, but apparently if it says "Made in Netherlands" then it's a true original blend.

Carl B

We have tried the Aurora which is not too bad. Tried Robert Tims which is not bad as well but still no where near as good as the original Maccona. We also tried about another 10 different brands or styles. Out of desperation we swooped as low as trying Coles Fair Trade Organic Freeze Dried Coffee which to our total suprise is not too bad. Again not the original Maccona but 1000% better than their new recipe. Worth a try to all those struggling to find a half decent replacement.

Jules
Jules

We have been buying Moccona for 18 years and will not be buying another jar. I can’t believe they have changed it. Anyway after trying several replacements (Robert Timms Premium, Aurora,Nescrape Gold, lots of other Moccona flavours), surprisingly the Coles brand ( I know it already sounds second rate) Organic Freeze Dried coffee was the nicest substitute. I couldn’t believe how good it was. Obviously it doesn’t taste exactly like the original Moccona but out of all that we have tried, it was the closest. It’s only $4 for 100g jar. I recommend giving it a go.

i cant help you with a replacement - but there is still old stock on the shelves at woolworths coles and milk bars even 7 eleven look for the ones without the Richer Aroma' stamp on it - found two large and two medium at coles last night added it to my stash so im good for about 2yrs

I am going to do what I have been planning to do for a long time. Wake up each morning and grind and percolate some coffee in a french press. My mother used to do it every morning. I will do the same. My plan is to make enough to last all day and just reheat it when needed. Trying to find an instant I like is very hard. My best tip is to try instant coffees in good hotels in Europe. I found a great one in London once, but even though I lived there it took me a one hour bus trip to find it for sale. Qantas used to use it on long haul flights as well, but most airlines serve proper brewed coffee. I find french presses the easiest to clean, have tried a few other methods. I even have a WW1 French Army antique coffee percolater - it works very well but you have to remember which side is UP or you get a nasty surprise. Trust the French, even at war in the trenches, they want good coffee. Wish I could suggest an alternative to Moccona 5, but I don't have one.

Ah - French Style #3 is good. Its very similar and I haven't had it for a while. I will be drinking that. Hope that helps others find another morning cuppa.

I sent my feedback to Moccona and they suggested I should try their “French Style” one. I’m not gonna try it because it cannot replace the original flavour when this “French Style” was produced as a different flavour to the classic medium roast.

I found “REPUBLICA FREEZE DRIED ORGANIC COFFEE, SOUTH AMERICAN” is the closest flavour to the original classic medium roast, and I now love this one!!

I also tried Nescafé Gold SMOOTH Mild but it is just diluted version of Nescafé coffee with milder sour aftertaste. I don’t recommend this because I haven’t touched it since drinking 2 cups.

Desperado
Desperado

Moccona French Style is basically the same as our beloved medium roast number 5. It is a little stronger so you will need to fiddle with the amount to achieve the taste you used to love. I would really like to know who was the idiot who meddled with our coffee and why!

Firstly, Coles and Woolworths are giving refunds on Moccona so I would return it. I didn't even have a receipt but I still got my $24 back. In desperation I returned to Coles a week later and bought the Coles Organic Fair Trade Freeze Dried recommended on this site. I'll be buying this in future if Moccona don't stop their insanity and return to the original flavour. It would be good if they would also give a proper answer to our reviews. Their arrogance is unbelievable. They obviously do not care about their customers or their future sales or should I say lack of sales.
