I visited the Cleveland store to ask about fish for an outdoor pond that would help eliminate mosquito larvae. I was given sound friendly advice and bought the recommended fish plus some goldfish as a decorative item.
Staff enthusiast but lack knowledge beyond the very basics
I began a journey with tropical fish and of course learned from error. The staff hinted at the basics but really had little idea. I think if staff work there the basics should be mandatory. The most basic piece of critical knowledge is the nitrogen cycle in a fish tank. Fish crap and produce toxins which need to go somewhere. This cycle was not explained and the fact that it can take many weeks of patience.
Of course google helped by reading so called experts and their opinions and reviews. You have to get this right or expensive fish will die.... I lost 2 and now have the tank under control after much work. 1. Petbarn's tanks are mainly Aqua one - this brand is cheap entry at best. Fluval is where the quality is in the shop. 2. Petbarn stock is inconsistent - Small Fluval tanks (at a good price by the way) but none of the other the bigger set ups in fresh and saltwater are available to order on the site. There are some nicer tanks and stands than the ones advertised. Also Fluval looks a lot better than Aqaua one. On the Aqua one front there are also much nicer tanks which are not on the web site but on Aqua ones site - why not have some of these too? 3. Staff don't really understand the fish species etc - to be blunt you need to go to a aquarium shop and speak to someone who loves fish to find out and of course google. The reason staff don't understand is because they are mainly kids and or it is just a job for them. So called senior staff know the very basics but (Petbarn would not hire a real guru as that would cost money) Petbarn exists mainly to sell dog and cat stuff. (food) That is the bottom line really.
Do not ever take your pet to [name removed] at Cleveland Birkdale Petbarn to get groomed.
We booked our 10 month Cavoodle puppy to have a full groom. We arrived and I chose what blade I wanted, was told to pick her up a few hours later. An hour after I dropped my beautiful furry puppy I received a call from ‘ [name removed]’ saying she couldn’t use the blade I chose as my puppy’s fur was matted in places. I asked what blade and she replied she will have to use the shortest one, I said No I will return to shop and brush my puppy then return when...
Rip-off prices and no loyalty benefits
I’m a regular Petbarn shopper. Went to buy a Furminator dog grooming comb. Costs a whopping $97. But there was a ‘Buy a 2nd at half price’ deal on. Who needs 2 combs I ask? Shop assistant was unwilling to negotiate a better price on a single unit, and seeing as I’m only gold and not platinum they won’t match price. Left feeling annoyed at such poor customer service. But got it online for just $37 + express delivery. Shout out to Petcircle.com.au.
Up one entering the store- disheartened with customer service
I attended the KOGARAH store yesterday. Upon arrival there is a sign stating that all animals entering the store must be on a leash, which is correct. I entered the store with my three month old dog to find a huge dog roaming the store with no leash who ran towards me and my dog. I notified the employee that my dog was scared and questioned why the huge dog was not restrained. The employee replied this is how it is. I stated that obviously due to this, I cannot enter the store to buy the products I needed and he really did not care whatsoever. No customer service skills, he was very rude and arrogant. Obviously will not be returning to this store ever again.
COBURG STORE AWESOME
The staff at the Coburg store are just great. Friendly and knowledgeable. Rambo loves the staff, but not so much bath time!!! The facilities are always clean and I can get everything I need at one place
Aquarium equipment purchase
Went into the Penrith Store to purchase some hidey holes for our 30 ltr fish tank. The staff member we spoke to was knowledgeable and friendly. We asked a bunch of questions that he answered truthfully and we walked out happy with an extra fish our son wanted confident in the information that the staff member gave us. We are more educated on fish tank maintenance. Couldn't ask for a better experience :)
Excellent service Cairns Pet Barn
Fantastic service - dog friendly store - we have Maremma’s a Giant breed they are both welcome when we shop in store. We use Black Hawk dog food 20kg bags. All the friendly staff know your dogs by name & always load your car with our purchases. Petbarn e-mail or text when your due for the next bag of food - excellent service - great value for money store with an AMAZING product range. I’m VERY PROUD to support Petbarn as they SUPPORT the RSPCA re-homing program.
Hills Science Diet waiting for Vet Staff
Tried to purchase Hills Prescription Diet Id Digestive Care Canned Dog, had to wait over 5 mins for a Vet Staff member who was rude and abrupt and would not let me purchase the food I needed to purchase, it is not Russia we are in Australia turns out there is a form to use however try using this for customers may help to enable customers to purchase rather than push them away,

Love coming here
I can come to this store with my dog, he gets greeted with treats, water, cuddles and i get the best advice as everyone who works here loves animals. Wide variety, a little expensive, but a pleasant place to take my animal to test out the toys and pick some new treats. We can also wash him here too.
Wow, confused sales team!
Store layout no too bad, but I was unsure about where small animal food was placed as obviously they have a massive emphasis on the larger pets, dogs cats etc etc. which saw me walking in circles. I asked a member of the sales team to simply point me to the part of the store for guinea pig pellets, totally confused the guy that I approached (who had no one around him) told me, sorry im in the middle of serving someone and wouldn't even just point to the area of the store for me to look in .....too difficult for them to just point as they are on...their "supposed mission" to serve the other customer. I've been in sales for years and the attitude of this bloke will make me shop elsewhere. This is typical for these types of stores, massive place, 3 people on the sales floor for 25 customers, ridiculous. Shame for this place too, as this was my first and last experience with this company. I bought guinea pig pellets 20kg, cant be bothered uploading my receipt as this place has taken up enough of my time just writing this review.
Advice given was for sales, not for pet welfare
I went to petbarn to buy my kids a fish. I bought a 21L tank on the advice of the sales assistant who said I could keep 4 platy fish in it. I went back and bought 2 fish and then read later that a 21L tank is much too small for platy's - they need to swim around more. My husband went in to get a thermometer a few weeks later and came home with a suckerfish (catfish.) Our tank is too small for a suckerfish but the sales assistant sold it to him knowing the size of our tank with no warning that the tank was too small. I went back and after pressi...ng, the manager admitted that the tank was too small. She ultimately said 'We don't like to tell people what to do with their pets.' Except that is why people go to Petbarn. To get advice on how to keep animals in a healthy, humane, safe way and we expect to get advice that reflects that. So yes, I won't be going back for any advice on how to care for animals.

Reasonable range of products, sometimes overpriced.
I have bought many products for my dog here.
The products are of high quality and I have never had a problem with the store.
However, whatever I find in store, I know that I can get online for cheaper. It would be great if they price matched.
The staff are very knowledgeable and can usually answer any question I throw at them. They give great advice on what toys to buy for my dog who loves to chew.
It would be good if they had a larger range of products though.
Dog grooming service
Browns Plains store staff were less than helpful. Didn't inform me when I dropped my dog off that dogs were booked in in groups and that I should expect to wait half a day to pick my dog up. Will definately use mobile groomers in future.
Knowledgeable staff and always willing to answer and help.
I would recommend anyone to visit Petbarn especially if you have questions. My dog enjoys visiting as they are welcome in store which is great. They also have Afterpay available which has made a huge difference fo me.
I haven’t had a dog in twenty years. I wanted the healthiest diet as possible and was give information on the top brands, no pressure me to buy one brand over another ... plenty of other items to make any pet happy and healthy.
Courteous Employee, Impossible Job...
It was the first week of the month and my first visit to a Pet Barn store. I needed a particular brand of pet food urgently. I had browsed the online store the night before and saw several 'on line only' deals but I like to support local so in I went.
I thought I'd join PetBarn and buy several $40 food packs. I signed up at the check-out and, when the courteous young man handed me my PetBarn card, he said "Next month you can get 10% off purchases..."
Next month? Next month was more than three weeks away and I needed pet food now. "Sorry...
Pet Grooming resulted in surgery and stitches
We took our 5month old puppy to box hill pet barn grooming and I received a call to say that unfortunately a cut (graze like) was sustain during grooming. When I collected my puppy it was more than a ‘graze’ it was a deep cut through her paw pad, requiring sedation and stutches. As a result, no walking her for 4 weeks and many sleepless night for all due to the pain she was in. Will not be returning there again and do not recommend.
Great returns policy
We bought boxes of fancy feast over a year ago as we stock up when they are on special. My cat has just been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and can’t eat fancy feast cans any more. They refunded the whole lot and will donate to the RSPCA as they cannot restock them.
