I own a Pfaff 4.0 and have been sewing on it for several years. sewing the other day and suddenly "Machine set for straight stitch"has come up on the screen. I have not changed any settings and now I am unable to do anything except straight stitch. Has anyone had this problem and do you know how to fix it.

So, I came across this question yesterday - because my machine had the exact same problem! After hours of searching the manual, call Pfaff (they said it had a computer issue so take it to a service center), calling a service center (he said he had never heard of such a thing so he would have to look into it more)..... I told my husband. He got on the machine, and within a couple minutes he found the solution. Click the i for info button. Then a couple choices down is a needle with safety or something like that. (I don't have my sewing machine in front of me.) When that button is checked, the machine is set for straight stitch. It is a safety so the needle doesn't go to the side and break if you have a foot on it that is for straight stitch only. So deselect it, and you can go back to all of your stitches again!!!! My husband is so wonderful!!!

top thread keeps breaking.

My bobbinthread would break followed by the top thread. There is a plastic tension guide that needs to be replaced. Recently Pfaff issued a better replacement part.

l have not had this problem but there is an excellent facebook page on Pfaff machines where you may find your answer.

I have a pfaff expression 2.0 , and all of a sudden it will stitch a straight stitch (on #1 setting) in reverse but it will not in the Normal forward setting. The machine looks as if it’s working but it’s like the feed dog isn’t grabbing the fabric to move it and it’s staying in the same position and the needle just goes up and down in the same spot ( it’s like it’s stuck in the immediate tie-off setting) would you have any ideas on what that may be ( I did clean it and since have seen with it but when I tried today and now have this problem? first problem in 10 year Thank, you Jocelyn

What was the original cost of an Expression 2.0?

My auto buttonhole foot has been disconnected and another foot put in its place, the stitch has been changed but no matter what I do it still thinks it is connected. Is this a common problem?

I have had my Pfaff Expression 2.0 sewing machine since the end of 2010 and have been happy with it until this year. I keep having tension problems. Either the top stitch is too tight or the bobbin stitch is too tight. I just can not get a quality stitch with this machine anymore. This includes the decorative stitches. I have sewn some leather on it in the past and it has been doing fine. I just had it serviced in October 2016 and haven't sewn that much since so it shouldn't have a tension problem. I am now wondering if sewing leather on this machine screwed up the tension?

I can not afford giving it to the Sewing & Vacuum store anymore to be serviced because it cost $300 at least every time I do that and it is gone for the service for at least 2 weeks.

This does not make me happy! I am wondering what I should do?

I have no answers to your tension problems but note that after a relatively short period of time (a couple of years maybe) I had problems with the Pfaff thread cutter. The problem there was cheap plastic parts and expensive replacements (also cheap plastic) so I traded the machine in rather than face continuing problems.

Joy, thank you for your answer. I have managed to fix the tension problem with my machine. I noticed that there was a burr in the metal plate that caught the thread and messed up the tension. I filed this burr down so that it is smooth. Now everything works fine.

I still have decided to sell the machine. What can I expect to get for this machine in the U.S.? I bought it new in October 2010.

sewing massive amount of stitch to the inch. Nothing I do will alter the stitch. I have rethreaded the bobbin and needle. Any ideas?

Take it to a Pfaff mechanic or better still get a janome 7700 Horizon.

Disappointed that pfaff didn't give me an answer. I have heard that some machines have designed in Germany and underneath has made in China. I've looked at mine and that is what is on mine. Inferior product l think.

I have the Pfaff Quilt Expression 4 and am now constantly having the problem of thread jamming when free motion quilting. Everything else with the machine is good, but I bought this machine because of the amount of quilting I do. Does anyone have this same problem and is there something that I am doing wrong? It was recently serviced.

Hi Elaine, I have not had this problem with free motion quiling but I think these machines are total lemons ever since Singer bought Pfaff and are now churning them out in Shanghai. I believe all sewing machines are now a problem because of the above. I know Husquavana and possibly Bernina were also bought by Singer and we are now suffering the corperate Ugly American. What to do? Buggered if I know.

I did not have much luck quilting on the Pfaff 4.0. Years ago I bought a Juki 98 because it was one of the first (Brother was the other) with a large throat for quilting. This is a GREAT machine! They still sell it and I still use mine however it only sews a straight stitch so if you want fancy, forget it. But for quilting and piecing, it's the best. Not computerized and heavy because there are no plastic parts. A real workhorse.

Christina, BERNINA is wholly owned by BERNINA. In fact, the same family still owns and runs the company as started the business 125 years ago. They did open a factory in Thailand, but the equipment was the very equipment in the manufacturing plant in Switzerland that was moved over to Thailand. That factory is still personally overseen by the family, and is only used to make some of their machines.

I discovered this post searching for answers to what should be a non-issue with the Pfaff Expression 3.0, as a technician, but unable to find a Factory Service Manual for these machines. As a technician, I can honestly say that the only machine I would ever purchase is a BERNINA, out of those I have serviced. I have never yet serviced a Juki, though. :-)
