Perhaps one of the worst (if not "The Worst") travel insurance experience that I have encountered. Horrible service, disconnected teams, rubbish rationale (i.e. they love to get your money upfront, but discard your receipts as they do not wish to pay back). Don't even bother talking to them, even a one star review is too generous. Show details

My mother flat-lined after a standard operation due to an unrelated illness so we decided to cancel our trip and fly to where she is. hospital being overseas, we cannot simply fly back to get what they ask for. Mind you, they reply once a month even after multiple follow ups. This is so distressing to re-live every time they ask for something new and they have shown no humanity at all. The amount is just 7000 AUD and yet they choose to be cruel.

The consultant I spoke to suggested not to cancel the Policy immediately in case we needed to claim expenses e.g. unrefunded air fares, accommodation. I lodged my claim Dec 2024. I was sent an email stating that my payment 'bounced back' and to update my bank details via the portal. Even though my bank details were correct, I 'updated' them anyway. I have messaged via the portal and via email multiple times since then, asking for an update and have had silence. It is now March 2025! Super dodgy company, will be going to the ombudsman next. rejected! The reason given. “ That Physiotherapy aids the recovery process. Most mild to moderate soft tissue injuries (As in this case) will most likely recover over a period of 6 weeks. So soft tissue treatments abroad are not medically necessary. Therefore there will be no coverage for the treatment” What a load of nonsense. Tell me RACV what ‘medical conditions are covered ??

After more than 4 months, I got approved claim (after submitting everything I could), but my compensation was 10% of the claim I submitted, placed under the basis type, even though I have paid for comprehensive insurance. Extremely unhappy – Extremely unhappy that when I enquired about adding a medical condition to the policy all previously declared medical conditions became uncovered. This seems extremely unfair as new condition is not related to previously declared. I believe they have broken the contract that we had. 30+ business days, vague responses and still no outcome – Reading through the other reviews within this last week, there is a common theme here RACV. It's been 30 business days since I've raised my claim, contacted more than 8 times, through multiple channels and forever been told it's been personally escalated and that I will get an update and call back. of outcome, just that "someone is looking at it and will call you back". I have multiple other insurance policies with RACV, and been a member for many years. My trust has greatly diminished and I will be taking my insurances elsewhere. Your "within 10 business days" of claim assessment is absolutely false and misleading.

RACV/Tokio Marine Nichido will fight you every step of the way – We filed a travel insurance claim after one of the named travelers on the policy was diagnosed with cancer. They have so far worked very hard to find a way to reject the claim, the underwriter (Tokio Marine Nichido) was provided with a medical specialist letter citing the timeline of diagnosis, and attempted to reject it, we objected to this, but… Read more
still complied and provided additional medical information to try and validate our claim, this should not have been required.
RACV/TMN indicated they needed a medical statement stating the policy member had never previously had cancer, the policy member has never had cancer before, but did not have a regular GP available to attest to that, this was an impossible ask; they eventually partially approved the claim after threats of further escalation.
Unfortunately RACV/TMN have attempted to exclude our previously booked wedding photography intended to occur on the trip despite their PDS offering no exclusions for this. They have cited a section of the PDS which does not reinforce their claims.
The issue is now stuck in the an AFCA complaints review process, and likely will be for some time pending a further judgement, they have refused to apologize so far for their unreasonable attempts to compel impossible medical history, and are wasting our time in a vulnerable moment.
I strongly recommend you avoid using RACV products in future, and I strongly recommend RACV review it's relationship with Tokio Marine Nichido, as they're not worth the reputational damage. Just drop your product all-together if you can't find a decent underwriter and let Allianz who approved another traveler's related claim within a week take your business.

Denial of claim – Terrible experience. 2 of us travelling and insured with different companies. Trip cancelled at short notice due to serious illness. The other company paid in full quickly. RACV has denied the claim They have requested an extreme amount of documentation and have misinterpreted some aspects. If I could give them less than zero, I would. A Long Story – Policy cancelled due to Covid 2021. Was told no refund then surprised with offer of refund in 2024. Staff were courteous during phone calls.Told on 23 3 24 refund in 3- 6 weeks, when not received, contacted them again on 11 6 24 (10 weeks!!!). Refunded on 13 6 24. Very happy now. Show details
Dont buy travel insurance from racv – They don't even rate 1 star, deserve Zero. Travelled Galapagos islands, Flight back was cancelled due to Bird strike, and they deny claim because "Cancellation, delays or rescheduling caused by Your Transport Provider or Travel Services Provider are not covered" what the hell is Travel insurance for if not to cover cancelations. If I could do 0 stars I would – No point paying for travel insurance with RACV. There terms and conditions are ridiculous. I needed to claim for lost baggage and delayed flight without notification and the extremely detailed terms and conditions are absurd. Disappointed with RACV treatment during Covid – I paid $585.94 for the policy, then when Covid struck the best RACV offered me was a six month extension which was useless due to lockdowns and the travel restrictions. Only now, 4 years later are they offering a partial Refund of only $167.42. So, so disappointed considering, the RACV and insurers lost nothing and myself having various other RACV policies, travel, car etc. over the years. Show details

Never again, it was disasterous – I paid about $1000 for full comprehensive travel insurance. I had never made a claim on travel insurance ever before. I became unwell in Thailand and was room bound for about a week before knowing I would need to go to the hospital. you're in Australia, but not so easy out if you don't have an Aussie sim, etc. I had a Thai sim, of course, prepaid, and I tried calling the "overseas" RACV number 3 times minimum it disconnected after waiting what seemed like 5 minutes for RACV marketing and Menu options, etc, ridiculous on an OS number, it should be brief if not answered near instantly. So three times it dropped out and it had chewed up nearly all my prepaid money on the phone, between $15 to 20 dollars. I get through to the 3rd pard medical group that takes OS calls and the woman told me to wait a minute then the line went dead. I rang back and got a guy at the 3rd party medical group and the first thing I did was tell the guy my Thai phone number and that my credits were nearly drained and to call me back if I disconnected. He replied he will definitely call me back and quoted my phone number which was correct, and then the credits ran out. Never heard from anyone. I then started emailing. At the same time, I had several hospital visits and my illness started to look a bit scary. Who had my back, no one, especially not the RACV. At one point I emailed them and 4 days later had had no reply. Making the claim was slow and terrible communication but was eventually paid, as it should have been.
Getting in touch with them was a nightmare, I told them I kept running out of pre-paid funds on my phone, and because I was ill and stuck in my room initially I couldn't just go and top up easily, or at all. I said why can't we Skype or Messenger or Whatsapp or something and they said because they are nonsecure. I did point out that since they are willing to call your mobile number if overseas surely Skype etc would be secure enough to inform them of my mobile number so they could call me.
The whole experience was terrible, the medical group On Call International was atrocious, but to be fair, EVENTUALLY after making complaints a lady did contact me that seemed to have more interest in helping me. Communication seems to be something that is getting worse, corporations don't want to have staff ready to talk, they have to pay them to be ready to answer calls and help people.
I have RACV for Home Contents and usually car, and they have been good, but travel insurance, never again will I rely on them, they just don't have a good enough communication system in place, and they don't seem to understand that. When you are unwell overseas it can be concerning, when you get very unwell and the insurer you have paid top dollar for doesn't take their role seriously, or take the customer seriously, being unwell is very isolating.
Never again could I trust them when I need them most.
A terrible experience relying on RACV travel insurance.
From my experience, no one could have done a worse job.

other option offered, was considerably less than half the cost of the policy. Given we applied 5 days before departure, losing more than half the cost of the policy seemed excessive. In addition, the rep I spoke to from Tokio Marine was rather difficult to discuss things with, and seemed to take the attitude that a customer is a pest who should just do what they are told.

It is a useless travel insurance. Won’t cover you if you get delayed or miss flight – International Flight got delayed so missed another flight. RACV denied claim saying ‘ we don’t cover if you miss due to delay or cancellation by your travel provider’. How else can you get delayed? insurance. We have all car and house and contents insurance with RACV and have purchased travel insurance numerous times in the past. Very disappointing. We will now use Allianz for all our travel insurance needs.
