Is the Redken All Soft Shampoo a saviour for dry hair?
When hunting around for a new shampoo to try, the Redken All Soft Shampoo’s cult following definitely piqued my interest. It was praised by users for its ability to soften hair and give it shine, so adding it to my cart seemed like a total no-brainer.
I’ve been using the Redken All Soft Shampoo for almost a year now (with a couple of months break to test another shampoo) to see whether it really would make my hair as soft as some people have claimed.
I’ve tried other shampoos, including a bunch of salon shampoos, but I always seem to come back to this one - so let me tell you why.
About the shampoo
Redken All Soft is formulated with argan oil, which hydrates the hair, gently cleanses it, and softens it. It also contains RCT Protein Complex which nourishes the hair from root to core to tip.
Some other star ingredients in the formula include:
- soy protein, which locks in moisture and adds body.
- arginine, which helps condition the hair by stimulating the scalp.
- sepicap, which makes the ends of your hair look and feel healthier.
What type of hair is Redken All Soft for?
Redken describes All Soft as a “hair softening shampoo designed for dry, damaged hair”. Because it softens fibres to add shine and make it more manageable, I’d say that it could also be suited for generally lacklustre hair or those looking to tackle a bit of frizz.
This shampoo was pretty much designed with my hair in mind: my hair is dry, brittle, and goes through regular bleaching and colouring, which makes it pretty difficult to get my very straight hair to actually look sleek.
Does it do what it says it does?
It’s all in the name - the Redken All Soft made my hair feel softer, even after the very first wash.
I loved the initial feel of my hair after washing it with the All Soft. It felt more manageable and easier to brush, which is an impressive feat in itself. My dry hair is quite impressionable, so if I leave it in a bun or ponytail, it’s kink central (not in that way).
The shampoo made my dry hair feel clean without feeling like it was stripped of its natural oils. I was also impressed at how it didn’t feel like there was any buildup on my scalp or residue in my hair, because I’ve often found that hydrating shampoos do just that.
However, it did make my hair oilier faster than other shampoos in the past have, but not by much. With the Kevin Murphy Angel Wash, for example, I could comfortably go three days without a wash, but with this shampoo, I was pretty desperate for a wash when approaching the three day mark.
This wasn’t a huge deal for me, as I generally wash my hair every two to three days anyway, but I thought I’d test the All Soft’s limits for those who prefer to keep their shampooing to a minimum.
Consistency
You don’t need a lot of this shampoo, which is great for the wallet. It has a rich lather and the product spreads easily around the hair, so you don’t need to put in much elbow grease foaming it up and getting it from root to tip.
Scent
The shampoo has a subtle, sweet smell that I personally love, but I could rarely smell it after my hair had completely dried. Apart from a hint of argan oil, I couldn’t exactly put my finger on what I was smelling, but I kind of like it that way. I sometimes caught a whiff of honey, but this isn’t in the ingredients list. All in all though, I feel like the All Soft’s scent is a pretty universally likable one.
Packaging
Redken changed the packaging across all of its haircare in early 2021, and honestly, thank god. Now, instead of the original tall, thin bottles, we get shorter, wider bottles that are a lot harder to knock over in the shower.
These haircare bottles are also made with at least 93% recycled plastic and they’re super easy to squeeze product out of, so it’s a win for the planet and for tired hands.
I also love how you can position the bottle upside down so that for the last few washes you can just let the product drip down and get all of it out. It’s such a simple design that I wish more shampoo bottles had.
Is it worth it?
The Redken All Soft Shampoo is a salon shampoo, but it’s not as high-end as most. I bought mine for $32 for a 300ml bottle. While this is more than a lot of people would spend on shampoo, I thought the quality of the shampoo and what it did for my hair made it worth every cent.
Until now, I had also never been loyal to a shampoo, so make of that what you will.
I’ve been bleaching my hair for years now, and I had been starting to get nostalgic about my natural hair and how soft it was. Using Redken All Soft has me pining after my old hair a little less and has made me a lot more confident that having healthy, coloured hair is possible. If you ask me, that’s an impressive achievement for a small bottle.
You can buy the Redken All Soft Shampoo at Adore Beauty, The Iconic, Oz Hair & Beauty, and select hair salons and online retailers.
I use it daily and would like to find a regular supplier, I'm in Bundaberg Qld – I have lived in rural Australia and having water quality from bore water to town water and tank water I found since using allsoft my hair is soft and excellent condition all day other shampoo's will dry my hair and my scalp, only thing is hard to find a supplier in the last 12 months when I do find supply I have to buy plenty of stock, I don't mind the price as you only use a small amount each time, great product, cheers Steve Show details
THE BEST Shampoo & Conditioner Brand EVER!!!! Been a customer for my whole life – Redken is by far the best brand for Shampoo and Conditioner and it smells Divine. It is totally worth the money. I always purchase mine from Catch online as they have sales on constantly. Or on eBay. I use all soft and other kinds of Redken. It is great to bring coloured blonde hair back to a natural healthy manageable state. I have oily roots with dry damages ends. Show details
Redkin All Soft: Itchy & Not Soft At All! – I was so stoked when I bought this to try and have been using it for about a month now. Shampoo and conditioner. I have curly hair. It does nothing at all that it promises and is an expensive waste of time. Even supermarket ones out do it and that is saying a lot. In fact, I tried another one today just to see if there was a difference. Let's… Read more
just say - it seems the non Redkin one is somewhat better and doesn't cause itchiness at all. The All Soft actually makes my scalp itchy all the time even after being freshly washed.
I will not be buying it again and will be purchasing something that costs under $20 that actually does make my hair feel soft and clean with no adverse effects. Doubt I will finish it.
Right now, my head actually feels normal and not irritated - the first time in weeks.
Redkin should not be selling an average mediocre product for $$$ when it does not live up to the hype.
A double bottle with an inner layer! What the Hell???? – I have been using Redken for about 20 years. I try other things but end up going back to it. At Christmas time I bought one of the shampoo, conditioner packs that contained a hair mask as well. I was having trouble getting all the mask out recently. It was strange but I couldn't get the product to squeeze out properly, so I cut open the bottle… Read more
only to find it was a DOUBLE BOTTLE with an inner layer! What the hell? What kind of company would have a philosophy that says it's ok to put an inner layer in a bottle? There are 2 very wrong points that come to my mind from this: 1. Most importantly, they don't give a toss about the environment because that's a lot of plastic for such a little amount of product. 2. They are trying to make it look like they're giving away more product in the gift packs, which means they're completely ok with blatantly ripping off customers.
I showed my husband, 16yo son and 18yo daughter and asked them what they thought. They were as shocked as me! It is wrong on so many levels.
I wonder whose idea this was?? This philosophy has destroyed L'oreal / Redken's reputation with me and my family big time! So disappointed!
Highly recommend! – Anytime I've coloured my hair, I have always gone back to Redken. I am currently using so soft, and it does exactly that. I have blonde foils, and after washing my hair today, running my hands through my hair, and there are no dry patches, and it is definitely super soft. Highly recommend. Show details
The best shampoo and conditioner I have ever used! – I’ve been using a range of Redken hair shampoos and conditioners for years but the so soft range is my favourite. I have naturally wavy long hair and I find that the products smooth the hair follicle, controlling any “fly away” and making it easy to dry and style. I shampoo my hair twice and then apply conditioner to the mid section down to the… Read more
ends. I’ve always bought it from Chemist Warehouse and it costs about $19 a bottle. You don’t need much product and I only wash my hair twice a week so I find it lasts for a quite a while and is great value considering the high quality of the product. It’s important that you rinse the shampoo off well to avoid the product leaving a residue and don’t apply the conditioner to the roots. If you don’t rinse effectively and apply the conditioner to the roots it has a tendency to weigh the hair down and it can look quite limp and oily. I’m assuming that’s because both the shampoo and conditioner have moisturising properties.
difficult to get all product out of bottle – I really like the Redken products, I use the high rise volume shampoo and conditioner for my hair. However, I find I am wasting a lot of the product, especially the conditioner, as the bottle is just too firm to squeeze it out. The shampoo and conditioners are excellent but wish they would have a screw tops so I could use it all. Show details
Love it! – Ever since I ruined my hair with bleaching I’ve used redken products to get my hair looking Healthy and amazing again. I’ve used the extreme redken at the start however now I’m using this particular one (redken all soft) and it’s absolutely wonderful. It makes my hair feel so soft and silky and I don’t feel the need to wash my hair for a few days… Read more
after. Only a small amount is needed therefore the outlay for the conditioner shampoo isn’t so expensive. It’s much better than other brands I’ve used and il never change brands. So so happy with redken.
Not impressed – I saw few recommendations of this All Soft Shampoo on the net so I have tried. Nope... My hairs don't become soft or I don't feel it soft or moisturised at all. No different from supermarket products. My hairs continue to be dried. No shiness is added either. I won't buy again.
You need this in your life – I have super curly, frizzy, knotty hair and I have found over the years that no matter what I use, it’s never as good as All Soft. Hair is smooth, shiny and hella luscious!! Try out a sample pot if your skeptical but IMO I don’t know why this product doesn’t have a 5 star rating!!
Love this! – Definitely makes your hair soft not to mention I love the smell of this one! It's hard to find a good shampoo I feel like I've tried almost everything as I get bored with sticking to the same brand but I've always loved the Redken range and can't go wrong with this one.
The best! – So happy I bought this product. My hairdresser recommended it after booking in for a hair emergency. My hair was so dry and brittle after bleaching. Now it is back to being soft, silky and easy to manage. Hurrah!! Would recommend to others.
What did you do, Redken? – I thought I was the only one. My hair is a MESS when I use redken now. I have a beautiful natural wave, and I haven't seen it in a very very very long time. My hair doesn't lay strand against strand, you can see through my hair. Maybe it's all the random protein fibers manipulating my hair follicles?? Glad I know about this IPN technology crap now.

Shampoo is awful, Conditioner ok – I bought Redken All Soft as my hairdresser had used it on my hair. I have curly hair, prone to frizz, and I'd been trying to use some better products as my hair is getting thinner as I age. I used to have terrifically thick hair, couldn't even close your fist around my ponytail. Alas, after three children, my hair isn't the same--anyway, after… Read more
using the shampoo and conditioner, it looked like I stuck my finger in a light socket. I looked like I had an afro. My hair was so poofy, it was completely unmanageable.
I then decided to see if it was the shampoo or conditioner that was the problem. I have since used other shampoos and the Redken Conditioner and discovered, that yes, it's the Redken shampoo that must completely strip my hair to the point that it puffs out so terribly.
It's still sitting in my bathroom cabinet, but no one uses it because they know the effect it has on their hair and no one wants puffy hair. The conditioner smells fantastic, and does a decent job, but I found others that were better. I would never buy the shampoo again. I have Botticelli/ringlets for hair.
Like this shampoo and conditioner – I do like this shampoo and conditioner. Much better than supermarket shampoo but I think it still could be a tad better, as it doesn't feels quite as scrumptious as my hairdresser shampoos. I guess I might have to spend even more $$$ on getting that hairdresser feel. I do like this one though and am on my second bottle but I might try something… Read more
different next time. Unlike the reviews below I haven't been using Redken that long so I can't compare this one to their old formula but if it's right what they are saying then I think Redken have made a big mistake with changing it. The smell (mild coconut) Could be a little bit getter
Disappointment – This product was recommended to me by my sister who was extremely happy with this product. After using it I also was very happy and thought I had found the hair product I had been searching for until I finished my first bottle and renewed it and now am very unhappy with this product. Am totally shocked at how a product can make such a positive… Read more
difference to such a negative product. Comment was made had I changed my shampoo because my hair was looking so good and now was flat dry and lifeless.
Obviously product has been changed and like nothing about it.
Redkin 'was' a great product, but they've changed their formula – I had been using Redkin All Soft Heavy Cream for years. I realised the product was not working as well. I had 2 containers that I'd bought in different years. The packaging was identical until you read the ingredients. One contained Methylparaben which is wax. The other did not have this ingredient. The one with the Methylparaben is the one that… Read more
was not working as well. After continued use with it, it made my hair brittle, dry and frizzy. The wax coats the hair and suffocates it. It's common in many grocery store brands. It makes your hair feel smooth when freshly washed. But usage over time, leaves a build up that smothers the hair leaving it weak, dry and brittle. I will be very careful to read the ingredients on Redkin packaging from now on. Anything that ends with "paraben" is wax. Avoid it! It used to be a great product. They have added wax/paraben to their formula.
I used to love this until they changed the formula – I have pretty curly hair and I need products that are nourishing and maintain moisture. Redken All Soft and Smooth Down lines were AMAZING for just that - until they added that "IPN technology" or whatever, when really they're trying to masquerade their budget cuts. It's AWFUL! My hair is brittle, and dry, and frizzy... I have never seen it… Read more
this bad. It's a shame too because I just bought a 1L bottle of shampoo and conditioner.
new formula, does more damage than good
I love my Redken All Soft! – I love using my Redken All Soft shampoo and conditioner - my hair is so soft and nourished after using it. I am a blonde hence my hair can get dry and frizzy very easily but AllSoft keeps the frizz at bay and helps reduce breakage / split ends. I would recommend Redken All soft to anyone with brittle, dry hair. They will notice results straight… Read more
away! Makes my hair feel amazing! A little on the pricey side! Especially cuz I love the treatment as well!
Good – I definitely recommend the Redken All Soft range for people with thick, dry and dull hair. It has made my hair soft and healthy looking. But also keep in mind that just because I like it, it doesn't mean you will. When my products finish I am not going to re-purchase Redken only because I would like to try something new. But I honestly think the… Read more
treatment will expire before it runs out lol so keep that in mind before you buy it. I have used the ALL SOFT Shampoo, conditioner, and treatment - "heavy cream" (which comes in a tub). This is the first time I have used a more expensive brand, I used to use anything from the supermarket. After using these products I will never go back to supermarket products I have noticed a big difference in my hair after using Redken. My hair is soft, not frizzy when I straighten it and more shiny. People actually comment on how healthy my hair looks. I do not have colour treated hair but I feel the need to use these products because without them my hair looks dull, dry and frizzy. The treatment which comes in a tub will honestly last you a VERY long time. I have been using mine every second or third day for months and I have not even put a dent in it. The smell of the products and fine too. Not absolutely sensational but good enough. When you use the treatment (heavy cream in tub) you are supposed to leave it in for 5mins and then rinse it out. I find this annoying and prefer leave in treatments. So I just put the treatment in and leave it in my hair anyway and go to bed. When I wake up my hair is dry and I straighten it without rinsing it and just add PPS heat protector spray to each section of my hair. My hair is sooooo smooth, silky and shiny. So leaving the treatment it in works well for me even though you're not supposed to.
Another con with the treatment is it's really really thick! If you are the type of person that likes rinsing it out then I guess it doesn't matter but if you are like me and leave it in and you hate thick products in your hair then this treatment is not for you! I have really thick hair so I really don't care but if you have thin hair you might not like that about the treatment.
The price. The shampoo and conditioner retail for APPROXIMATELY $27.00 each. I buy mine from Hairhouse Warehouse. The treatment is about $35.00. But I'm telling you that is completely worth it because it will last ages!! And the products are worth it in general. Just don't be heavy handed when using them, there is really no need for that because they are good quality and that means they will last longer as well.
Redken All Soft Conditioner uses palm oil – Seems great to use but can't they find something other than palm oil? Other Redken products don't seem to use palm oil as an ingredient. Contains palm oil
Excellent – I would definately receommend this Redken product, especially for people with long blonde hair who want to keep it in great condition. I don't use the Redken all the time due to the cost. Once or twice a week I use my cheaper products. I will continue to use this product indefinately. i love this All Soft range. It softens my hair, especially… Read more
when I've had more blonde foils put into it. It also helps reduce the frizziness and smooth the hair down. The only Con is the price. But I do believe the Redken product is worth buying if you want nice long conditioned har.

Excellent – Redken All Soft is a beautiful product to use on hair that is colored and stressed by continually blow drying and hair straightening. I often buy this product when it is avaliable in packs as this helps to justify the price (you are getting another product for free. I can use this product often and my hair always responds well to it. I do however,… Read more
tend to mix it up with cheaper salon brands and use this in between. A lovely shampoo that cares for your hair, available at most hair care stores (I haven't had any problem finding this product) leaves your hair feeling silky, soft and smooth. Price point, it is overpriced even for salon brand products.
Good – good product to keep hair soft and smooth, contains better ingredients than the cheaper supermarket brands and hair looks and feels nice when using this. I have used the mask of this range though which i accidentally over used and as with anything containing strengthening proteins too much is not good either as it lead to breakage! Excellent – I have fine, dry, heat damaged hair. I have used the Heavy Cream mask and a spray in rinse out mask from the All Soft line. The spray in left my hair feeling very soft, and had a beautiful soft coconut scent, but ran out very fast and it was hard to determine (due to the spray applicator) how much i had actually used. mask whenever my hair is feeling extra dry or damaged. I usually leave it in for 30 minutes and rinse out. It is a fantastic mask and makes my hair feel smoother, softer, and more moisturized. Pleasant smell, professional products and ingredients tailored to a particular hair condition, very hydrating and smoothing for damaged hair. Very expensive for continual use.
Good – I have to say this is one quality product where the adage you get what you pay for really rings true. I was lucky enough to win some recently and couldn't believe how wonderfully amazing the product is. I'm sure the conditioner is made from silk extracts as it left my hair feeling so soft and silky and shiny. I have very dry hair and it always… Read more

Redken have a great product range and it would be great if it could be purchased from a few more outlets. Excellent for really dry hair. Oh, that would be the price!! Only available at hairdressers.
Excellent – I have used the heavy cream product for years, it was recommended to me by a hair consultant at a salon after I had coloured my hair on my own and the condition was very dry and damaged. She recommended I put this treatment in my hair daily initially, and as the condition appeared better, to drop back on the treatments. I was dubious to believe a… Read more
product could repair the damage but was suitably impressed this really did make a difference to the condition of my hair.
Because I have used it for years, I have wondered if it was time to try something new in case my hair was now used to this product. I have found another product that is also good but still use this one on a rotational basis because it still performs really well for my hair. Heavy cream review
An excellent hair treatment
Hair feels soft and noticeably more shiny.
Combats dry hair really well Bit pricey but worth it. All good hair treatments are though.
