Lemon don't waste your money – My heat Rheem heat pump series 2 Brock down after 18 months Rheum sent out a repair man and he tried to charge me$560 I checked the warranty and found it covered these parts for 2 years so I did not have to pay but only because I checked. Now 5 years later it has stopped working again I have contacted Rheem by email 3 times phone 3 times only to… Read more
be told they will get the service department to call me or for the line to ring out. I called again today to get the same response we are busy and will try to get someone to call you Its winter with almost no hot water for a week and no response from Rheem Please stay away from what was once a good Australian company
Expensive and unreliable. Poor value for money – It keeps breaking and is expensive to fix. The heat pump section is broken and Rheem sent a technician who couldn’t fix it. It was running off the electric element and using three times the power but at least we had hot water. My last technician did something to it and now it’s completely dead. I am still waiting for Rheem to get it touch with a solution. Show details
Very noisy and unreliable – Had trouble with this Rheem Heat Pump from the start.... had the fault lights replaced 3 times then gave up... so very noisy and always flicking off the power when below 5°... the Rheem service technician recently came out to fix it twice but actually caused it to fail completely ..... replaced by very professional tradesmen at SPEEDY HOT WATER… Read more

So far so good – We have had solar hot water systems up until now but the growth of tall trees near our house has increased the shade and has made solar water heating less effective. So we have been relying on the backup electric heater and paying full price for electricity to heat our water - especially in winter. Since we don't have access to gas, the solution… Read more
was a heat pump system. Due to the many negative reviews, I had not considered the Rheem units in our evaluation. However, all the other brands of heat pump water heaters were too tall to fit in the only really practical location for the heater and we were forced back to the Rheem. Reluctantly, we agreed for the plumber to install the Rheem. After installation, it worked as expected, but two days later, both indicator lights were off. According to the manual, this was a fault condition. Now this is the only negative about Rheem that I experienced. Initial calls to Rheem indicated that this was the "new improved mode of operation" where the unit shut down completely once the tank was full of hot water. Not satisfied with this brush off, I caused a bit of a stink with Rheem and finally got onto a person who promised to send out a technician to look at it. He discovered an installation hick-up which caused the heat pump to shut down and the hot water we were still getting was from the back up heating element. He quickly fixed the problem and the unit has been working as expected since. The Rheem technician was very professional and definitely knew his product. So the only reason, Rheem doesn't get 5 stars is due to the front line staff trying to pull a fast one and brush me off with lies about the operation of their product.
Water too hot – Im an electrician, I couldn't adjust the temp on the old thermostat so I replaced it but the overload on the thermostat trips every day. The water is extremely hot. Looking at the circuit diagram I'm now thinking maybe the control board. Could this be the cause? this is the first fault we have had with this system. Show details · 1
these units got moving parts – All the complains and unsatisfying customers, should have read the instructions on these products before they purchase it. They clearly said that these units require regular service. We do take our vehicle for a service don’t we? I ran this product down, and found that a gecko got in behind the pc board and blown it. Also calcium in the water pump. Not always the product fault. Show reply

No service from Rheem – After another breakdown of the heat pump and calling Rheem for service, it turns out Rheem outsourced the service of compressors to another company which doesn't respond. My service call has been with Rheem for 2 weeks and they couldn't get hold of a technician to check the compressor. Will be replacing the heater with another brand for a company that can support its products and stand by it. Show details

Expensive Mistake...No more RHEEM for me !!! – We bought a brand new house on the Sunshine Coast in 2012. The builder supplied and installed a Rheem Heat Pump water heater. Fast forward to 2021. It started making louder noises than usual for a day then put its hands up... I rang Rheem who wanted me to pay just short of $200 upfront before a serviceman would come.. I read the other… Read more
reviews and decided not to spend good money on this under engineered piece of rubbish, and now are replacing it with hopefully a better brand to heat our water..
Im afraid this "throwaway appliance" mentallity has finally worked its way up the pecking order to major items.
In years gone by, a hot water heater would last for a lot longer than 9 years before being unecconomicial to repair..
Best of luck if you end up with one of these..
Terrible product – Built a new house through Beechwood 2 years ago so didn't really get to chose the brand of hot water system we got.It was our first time having a heat pump so I thought it was great, until out first need for a technician to come and fix it.Tell me the the part has only 1 year warranty. What a joke $270 to fix it and after reading the reviews on… Read more
here I'm sure there is going to be more repairs. What a waste of money.Stay away from Rheem and Beechwood need start using another company for their new houses. My last house had Hardie Dux and not 1 repair in 10 years.

Lasted 12 years – One minor repair. Can't complain. Worked well but in the end it failed to heat. Probably a refrigerant leak.
Needs fixing in under 5 years – I purchased a MPI 325 unit through Solahart newcastle in September 2014. Recently the TPR valve was gone and it had been leaking hot water and not producing enough hot water. got the technician out and wants to charge me $260 for a valve replacement. the 5 year warranty i am now told doesnt cover valves and other bits. very poor unit and from what i read below i am not alone! 2 Heat Pumps in 9 years!! Very poor quality! – We built our home late 2010, and the first unit lasted 6 years due to the compressor burning out. We installed another Rheem unit in October 2016, after being advised that they were a very good unit and to stick with them. This one hasn't even lasted two and a half years. Had an electrical friend who came and bypassed it for us so we could have… Read more
hot water until a technician could come and inspect. Made many phone calls trying to get somebody to come and look at it and also contacted a Rheem consultant who advised me that there wasn't anybody in our area who could come and inspect the unit as we lived an hour away from the nearest technician. We have had to wait 3 and a half months for someone to look at it, and to find out that it will be very costly to repair and warranty does not cover it, once again the problem being a burnt out compressor. Lousy service, poor quality and a very expensive product. Do not purchase!

Leaky and rusty after 7 years – Installed in May 2012 the anode was replaced in 2016 , recommended to avoid rusting and part of normal maintenance, so no problem with that. The service guy showed me the old anode and installed a new one. In April 2019 there was rusty water coming out the top dripping down the sides of the tank. It still worked and I thought I could replace the… Read more
tank. It was out of warranty after only 5 years which is comparatively low and unimpressive for Rheem which is meant to be quality. However the plumber advised that I would need a whole new system as the heat pump was out of warranty too and unlikely to last long. As a new one would be over $5000 installed this was too expensive for me and obviously had not saved me enough money to make it worthwhile.
As I now have 5kW of solar panels it made more sense to install an ordinary electric storage HWS using solar power via the electricity generated. This cost me $1450 through Bunnings using a Dux system. Never using Rheem again although all the plumbers recommend them. Maybe some of them are OK or maybe the plumbers recommend them because they get "Rheem rewards" like holidays when they have enough points.
The other issue was noise which although low disturbs your sleep at night if it comes on. It vibrated a lot at the beginning until I put a rubber wedge between the fan cover and the wall of the heat pump.
The Dux is working great always hot water and is soundless. Seems to be better insulated too as I can't feel any heat from the outside of the tank, unlike the Rheem.
Terrible – Terrible unit! Less than 4 years old completely corroded and ruptured. Flooded our yard and found this when we took the top off! And on the long weekend just too top it off! Show details

with 2 red lights flashing, technician came out and tried resetting with no luck.
Purchased in 2009-2010 and stopped using for about 1 1/2 years due to rebuilding house.
If you look at the cost and years actually used, not value for money.
Have sent an email to fair trading because I believe not reasonable life for a unit so expensive.
Rang head office and asked to speak with manager, was told only option to send an email.
Customer service is as good as the product they sell....poor.
Have sent an email today waiting for a response.
Even the technician explained issues with earlier models.

Ordinary – Called out to repair one of these today. The operation problems and faults were obvious. Complete engineering disaster applenty. Due to how many of these installed locally we are looking at building a rework kit to save people some money. Unfortunately wont cover take failure. Rheeme solar hot water is just as bad. more punishment this time ,three grand plus repairs down the drain . The good thing now is there are plenty of decent heat pumps out there on the market , Rheem should hang there head in shame at their inability to rectify all the hws’s they sold after initial problems by the thousands started to present themselves ,rather they chose to keep selling a product they knew was a lemon straight off the shelf ,effectively cashing in on the customers belief that the Rheem name meant quality .
My advise along with the plenty of others on this highly effective platform “Product Reveiw” ,is stay away, far far away .

Sadly, the reviews are right. This product is awful – Where to start. Didn't even get 2 year of use out of this unit. Was installed at new home and sat idle for a year before settlement. Once we moved in, the TX valve went 12 months in and was fixed by the builder. 8 month later the compressor goes which costs over $1,000 to supply and install. 2 plumbers recommended replacing this with a better… Read more

Hopeless, confusing a joke – Unit failed one the day we moved into the property it had little use and the plumber said the units are crap, poor design and not worth repairing. Stopped working, again! – This unit first failed with a pump seizure only 12 months or so from new. storage HWS that I've able to switch to as a backup, so at least we have hot water.
What has been most interesting however is the difference in electricity consumption!
My bill has gone from $1300 down to $900 in the 3 months since the unit stopped working. No other changes to consumption patterns, only difference is that our hot water for the last 3 months has been via a conventional (off-peak) storage system (also a Rheem) and no longer from the heat pump. If I extrapolate this over the years that the heat pump has been installed then I estimate this Rheem 325 heat pump has actually COST me nearly $10,000 more to run than a simple off-peak storage unit would have cost me.
This is crazy! So much for energy efficiency.

WARNING - DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! – We are just one of many unhappy Rheem customers! Our Rheem Heat Pump Water Heater was installed in our home in 2012 (and was expensive). agent to come out. He found there were MULTIPLE problems, including system circulation pump badly corroded, impellar catching on housing, system pulling into vacuum, and TX valve (and, of course, he charged us for the callout). Concerned about the condition of the HWS after such a comparatively short time, we rang Rheem who sent THEIR employee out to check. According to him, we needed a new heater, not just a repair, and he quoted for this. After ringing Rheem again (we had to because they didn't get back to us as promised) they simply offered a discount on the purchase of a new model. If we can expect to have to replace it again in another five years, WHY would they think we would be prepared to spend thousands on another one??? We will never purchase another Rheem product!

Just an expensive joke. Will never buy another Rheem – Purchased in 2011 as at the time were told we could only have solar or a heat pump to replace a 20 year old electric unit. Roof wasn't suitable for solar so went with the Rheem heat pump. Seven years later has failed and uneconomic to repair (apparently the heat pump part is completely corroded and not repairable. The tank is fine) The… Read more
issue is that we went down this path as it was supposedly environmentally friendly not to mention the cost of around $3,500.00.. So my question to Rheem is how is a water heater that lasts only 7 years in any way friendly to the environment given the energy used in making the the thing as well as transporting it.
I have been told that the standard warranty is 5 years on tank and 2 years on heat pump so obviously Rheem don't expect these water heaters to last very long.
Would suggest you stay away from Rheem. I certainly will never buy another one of their products.

Biggest waste of money in my life! – It worked OK until it was one month out of warranty. We ran out of hot water one evening and I had to get an electrical/refrigeration company to come and check it out. They said something about a blocked "TX valve" and that the unit was "pumping down". They gave me the option to change the valve which sounded very involved and also very expensive… Read more
with no guarantees. They also gave me the option to rewire the unit so it uses the backup element full time. I opted for this seeing as the refrigeration unit seemed so costly and unreliable. It also showed up on product review that I had been stung. These units are a total lemon and total waste of money. There's no way it would have worked long enough to pay itself off. Now I'm stuck with a hot water unit that only heats a third of its capacity at full peak power. So it cost me $3000 and then $300 in a service call and now it costs me even more in electricity! Lose lose situation. STAY AWAY FROM THESE UNITS AND DO NOT GET STUCK WITHOUT HOT WATER!!! Highly disappointed and have had a semi working system for quite a few years now as we have not had thousands lying around for another hot water system and we don't have off peak either :(

Never ending problems! – I have been extremely dissatisfied with this HWS 325 litre. For a family of 3. Only 6.5 yrs old and paid $4,200 in March 2011 including labour and installation along with the ongoing issues which all seem to fall out of warranty. burnt out and needed replacing another $500!. Now in October 2017 the compressor had failed and have been quoted $1200 for part and labour. Very very disappointed with all of these major faults etc. This system had costed several thousand $$$$$ and will now just replace it, not throwing any more Money at it. Once again only 6.5 yrs old and the problems started at 4.5 yrs. It is also a very noisy system . I would welcome any feedback from Rheem directly as to why this system seems to be such a "lemon" also forgot to mention 6 weeks after installation received a recall letter re an occurring fault in an electrical component which the compressor could rupture. The system was checked and supposedly "ticked off" as being ok. you could say this system with all repairs labour etc has costed about $1000 per year and now I still useless after 6.5 yrs.

Expected this unit to last longer – I've always thought heat pumps are a good idea for larger houses equipped with solar power. The fan was less noisy than my Fujitsu reverse cycle air con. But my… Read more
Rheem has failed at just past the 7-year mark. My electrician traced the fault to one of the heat pump components. I was going to pay the $150 to get a Rheem technician to take a look until I read all the bad reviews on this site in similar circumstances. Given the high likelihood of expensive repairs (I'm guessing between $500-$1k total costs), with no confidence they will extend overall unit remaining life, I've chosen a Quantum 200L compact heat pump replacement unit for $1,883 fully installed, old unit removed. Quantum heat pumps are more efficient based on the tech sheets and seem to have a much better reputation with the plumbers I spoke to and reviews on this site. That said, my first preference would be a Hydrotherm heat pump, but they do not currently supply the WA market.

Problematic from the start – We were strongly persuaded by a plumber to buy this model because it was supposed to be efficient and was Govt subsidised. - approx 7-9 litres a day. A technician came and fixed the potential shaking fault in 2011 mentioned in other reviews. In Jun 2012 it stopped working altogether but was fixed under warranty (the indicator light had also stopped working sometime earlier and was replaced by the Rheem technician at the same time). There have been many cold days when it doesn't turn on and there never seems to be enough hot water for more than 2 quick showers in winter which causes unnecessary stress for the family. It stopped working altogether last night and I am disappointed it hasn't lasted 8 years. The one that was here before was from the 80s.
I bought a Rheem because it was meant to be a trusted brand but I have been very disappointed with this one.
