We commenced using our Smeg SA174 cooktop in 2016 when our new home was completed. We have been quite happy with the cooktop, however just recently an empty wine bottle slipped on our kitchen surface & hit the edge of the induction cooktop and to my astonishment, the cooktop shattered/cracked in the corner! Wow, I would hate to see anything heavy hitting it. Obviously it is quite fragile. Very disappointed, as I'm unsure at this stage if the glass can be replaced. I can't keep using it as it is. It looks unsightly. This was an expensive cooktop so we are not very happy regarding this problem. Anyone else had this problem when cooktop out of Warranty?

We have a SMEG SA174 induction cooktop installed. The one we have was replaced on warranty after the original cracked after taking a very minor bump from a saucepan. The current one is also cracked across the middle. We love the functionality but the fragility of the cooktop seems to not be what we had expected from a quality brand. Nonetheless we are out of warranty and going to replace the cooktop. I note the SA174 is discontinued, what model has replaced it? Have the fragility issues been addresed? thanks

Dear Craig, Thanks for your enquiry. The model which replaces your existing one is the SAI4744D. Regarding the quality of the glass, there are two ceramic glass manufacturers which all brands use, EUROKERA (French) and SCHOTT CERAN (German). It is indeed unfortunate that you have had issues with the glass as it is designed to be used as a cooking surface. Regards Smeg

Maybe the two glass manufacturers should lift their game after many complaints. This is not good enough on an expensive product such as Smeg.

I have the SA174 cooktop installed in November 19, which I love for ease of cleaning and speed when using P setting, however, if I also use another zone when one is already on 8-P (eg pasta) then it hardly warms up at all, can't even boil water. I am using the ss bonus Tramontina saucepan set supplied or the Baccarat Granite induction pots (both of which work beautifully, apart from above issue. Is there some trick or technique around this?

Hi Jill, Thanks for your enquiry. When using the P setting, the cooktop will take limit the power of the other zone/s. For example, you can have one zone on the left and one zone on the right on P, the corresponding zones will have their power limited so as not to go over the maximum power draw. Hope this helps Regards Smeg

Thank you, yes that makes sense. I had been using two on right when this was experienced. Appreciate your very prompt response.
