Review of nbn modem – Will use this to get on the Internet and on wifi Often have wifi dropouts I normally reset wifi modem And broadcasting fails on ps4 connected to wifi We may need a replacement sometime soon As we owned this modem for 5 y or more Wifi drops out in the toilet outside and my room so annoying ! No longer using as we have Smart Modem 3 now with wifi 6 Show details
Great! – I use this as a wifi router connected on the WAN port to my cable modem and now more recently to my nbn modem . I cant comment on its ability as an ADSL modem. The wifi range is better than any other "free" modem I have ever received from Optus. It is very reliable and ive never had to reboot it. The wifi guest network is also very handy. Show details
Wait a whole day everytime for connection recover – Cost a fortune and gives us a weekly base connection error in return. I don't know what's wrong with its configuration. Each time we unplug and replug it when Internet is down, we need to wait a whole day before the status light turns back to green and the gateway configures itself back to Internet. What is it doing during these red light… Read more
error hours? Programming its own connection code from scratch?
And when it works normally, we only get a 0.5Mbps average downloading speed compares to the ADSL 4Mbps promise.
Okay router, locked firmware – The router itself has quite alright features although the locked Telstra firmware leaves a lot to be desired. Operates adequately for what it is. Even works if you just need a generic wireless modem/router. However I feel it's a bit too complicated for a simple router, and too locked down as an advanced router. Show details
T-Gateway huge, ugly, poor reception, no aerial plug and Anti-Green technology – Whomever ever Telsta executive decided on this should be shot, revived then shot again. It's the size of a planet with the capabilities of a peanut. You can't even add an aerial for extended reception. 90's technology for the new millenium?? Only Telstra could be so stoopid and cheap. Where on earth are you supposed to hang/mount this ugly… Read more
monstrosity. The "Feet" on the back prevent wall mounting and the access to the various sockets are pointing backwards which also prevents wall mounting. Also, no way you can put it on a wall or lay it down due to these wires.
Reception is average to poor, and power usage is through the roof, power adapter and Modem running hot 24/7.
On the plus side, it is easy to set up and throw in the bin.
Good Modem – This was the modem given to me when I joined with Telstra in which I was pleasantly surprised. The wifi range is very good and covers my whole house. And I have not had any issues with the modem at all. The modem comes with 4 ports which is better than most standard modems bundled with your internet plan. Show details
WiFi almost useless even in same room – The WiFi to the tv across the room isn't great. I called telstra who told me I need a booster, so am going to buy cables. I have had the nbn guy out who says I should be capable of 90 plus bpm. To be fair, it may be a certain amount te Laura being a bit crap. I'm on the top plan. Show details
Excellent Wifi Range – I live in a two-storey townhouse with the modem located downstairs. The Wifi range is actually really good throughout the whole house as well as outside. I've used the Wifi at least 40 meters away from the modem with no problem in terms of speed and connection at all. I bought it through the Telstra ADSL2+ plan and have used it for about eighteen… Read more
months. I rarely have drop outs and have maybe needed to reboot the system twice during that time. I have used other modems and whilst the range is ok, their connection drop out rate and need to reboot is at least every couple of days - so I am pretty impressed with this unit overall.
Decent Modem – This was the free modem given with telstra for signing up for its adsl2+ plan, i have used it for over a year now and its ethernet connection if good. however, the wifi connection is not as great if you are living in a larger house as the connection drops out when you're around 10 metres away. Haven't really had any issues regarding the internet dropping out as its usually a phoneline or server sided problem. Show details
No network – Bad internet can't even do no work and it's very slow connection getting sick of this we pay a lots on money to be running good not happy right now can you help to put it up right for us to use because we paying big $$$ so please fix it straight a way. Show details
Ok modem for small apartments (not for a house) – This is a great modem provided by telstra for small areas (apartments). I cannot recommend this for a house as the wifi range is poor. I would recommend pairing with a repeater or another access point to combat the poor wifi reception. I would assume you would need to purchase more telstra products to get better range for wifi. Its okay – This modem is okay. When it works it works great but often there are periods of drop outs and we repeatedly have to turn it off and on. Sometimes these issues can last days. Other times we have no problems with it. The internet connection in our area can sometimes be patch so this would also have an effect. Show details
The router is as good as the net supplied – We have a really bad internet connection where we live so it either is dropping out or has a very slow connection, so based on this I can only review it best i can and although it holds up i havent been able to use it to its fullest potential. It is an okay modem – I have been using this modem for about 1.5 years with NBN. Since I live in a studio apartment so range would not be an issue. However, the signal sometimes drops and on rare occasion, I need to restart the modem. Speed is okay, but not perfect all the time. If you need a continuously perfect connection then you might not like this product. Show details
Terrible, Poor down right crap – Have been having ongoing issues with internet for over 2 years. Dropouts, slow speeds. Spend countless hours on phone to Telstra and had 8 technicians come out that have found nothing. Today I bite the bullet and replaced the T-Gateway with a D-link Python, and I can now actually access the Telstra Complaints website. Do you self a favour and if your having issues go buy another modem/router the ones Telstra provide are terrible Show details
Really bad – The signal is too bad! Three walls and less than 10 m, there is very bad signal. I t always disconnected. also, the Internet speed is also very slow, very very very slow. I do not know why! I think Telstra is a big company, Should I trust it later... Show details
Dont let Telstra tell you this will fix your problem – On 2 occasions now I have had Telstra blame ADSL dropouts on NON Telstra modems. 2 times they have turned up and put one of these pieces of junk in place and both times it has made no difference at all. It seems to be a thing they do to try to phob you off. Eventually though after much nashing of teeth, they fixed the exchange and line… Read more
issues that where the real problem,
I did try to use this modem, it is a complete bordello of an interface. Who makes this stuff ! Most routers are similar and if you can work on one brand you can another. But not so this modem, it has an interface like no other, very confusing and illogical. The worst router I have ever worked on.
Worst modem you could use. No recognition of problems by Telstra – We have replaced our Telstra Modem twice after numerous connection issues. At no time has Telstra ever acknowledged an issue with their modems, instead they steer the problems to your in house connections etc. We have spent countless frustrating hours on the phone to Telstra to sort our connection & drop out issues with no real resolution. We were… Read more
resetting our modem in excess of a dozen times a day to reconnect to the internet. Our modem would drop LAN connections on some computers in the home, while keeping others connected. Likewise with the WIFI connection.
Trying to run a home based business with these issues makes you see red!
I finally took the leap and purchased a new Netgear D6400. Guess what? No more drop outs & no more DNS connection issues. Several ADSL speed test have also revealed faster download speeds. For us the removal of Telstra modem technology has been a win, win solution to our frustrating internet connection problems.
Very reliable. set and forget – Had this model for quite a few years running ADSL2+ at 15mb download, 1.6 upload with Telstra. Never had a problem with it, nor did I require to reset it! Limited range thru several internal walls which was easily overcome with extender. Very satisfied customerwith both Telstra and the modem! HOWEVER, things will change when I go NBN,… Read more
as Telstra do not offer what I want, which is Internet, and phone call to mobile, WITHOUT, the entertainment package.
It would be better not to have anything – it is constantly dropping out at least three or four times a day, I have to reboot it each and everytime I try to use my laptop, it's absolutely ridiculous, cheap piece of rubbish, I've spent more time on the phone speaking to Telstra than I do with my family, and even then they can't fix the problem with it, I've had to go out and buy a new modem Show details
After visiting Telstra Store, numerous longgggg phone calls $$$ still unable to connect to Wifi – Will be returning Gateway Unit asap totally dissatisfied no one has been able to fix issue and trying to do a Tafe course its not viable, very upset. I have spent countless hours on calls to Telstra they have been unable to resolve the issues. Took the whole system to Mudgee Telstra Shop and although they spent hours trying to resolve still unable… Read more
to connect. More phone calls and just more frustration will be contacting Ombudsman to return unit and start all over again getting a system that does work so I can do my Studies online.
Cheap and Nasty Rubbish – Telstra Gateway "Max" Technicolor TG799vac In January 2015, I contacted Telstra to get a possible service issue resolved, as well as a modem replacement (as they had told me it's likely a device issue) and they sent the Telstra Gateway "Max" Technicolor TG799vac in a snazzy green box, sealed with shrink wrap. Problem wasn't that they charged me… Read more
for it - but that it only worked for just over a year before it constantly shut down and rebooted. Older ADSL2 modems reconnect to the internet on disconnection; they don't shut down completely, they come with installation discs, and the speeds are consistent. I complained to them again in March this year (as it was determined to be a modem fault caused by a bad line (which damaged the "Max" modem as well as the line)) - got a replacement - of the SAME MODEL - and that too fails (not as often but it reboots if there is a problem with the service). When it does that, the down speed drops to a woeful 2mbps or less. Unreliable, does not stay connected for long. I have since gone back to an older Telstra Thomson Gateway TG782T (which seems to work just fine with fewer dropouts and no reboots).
This "Max" modem, despite its good looks and modern styling, does not come with any installation CDs or driver support so it's useless on a clean OS (in particular Windows 7 and 8.1). If you have one of these, don't use it; the best place for it is straight into the bin as it's not worth it. As for the service dropouts, I have recently experienced these again, and have since contacted the TIO to get it resolved properly. There is no NBN in my area at present so I have to be content with ADSL2, but I will not be accepting any more of these cheapies from Telstra in the future as they are absolute junk. Just as well this model was discontinued; it should have been recalled as it's junk and is not fit for the purpose it was designed for which in my case is ADSL2. If I could I would rate this 0 stars.

Complete Rubbish – I had was sent a T gateway from telstra when I signed up and the Internet speeds were shockingly slow. After several hours of tech support they then supplied me free of charge a Gateway Max TG799vac This has turned out to be worse, after months of calls and tech support and every check they could think of I finally had enough !!! and for some… Read more
reason I just tried an old adsl2 single port Modem that i had.
And what do you know i have about 3 times the speed.
Its through an apple airport extreme and works very well, Dont use the Telstra rubbish
If you look for a Router recommendation you will never see buy a Telstra Modem will you.
Telstra should refund customers or replace discontinued TG797n v3 modem / routers – Telstra did not properly research the TG797n v3 modem / router before dumping them on unsuspecting NBN customers. They have an extremely poor wireless signal strength and are not acceptable for use in an average home. It has now been discontinued for good reason and Telstra should now contact all customers who have the modem / router to determine… Read more
if they are satisfied and if they are not, they should replace them free of charge with a device that is designed to provide effective wireless coverage in an average home. Alternatively refund customers so that they can buy and install their own device.
Not happy with telstra once again – T gateway received. manual does not match device or installation steps. troubleshooter useless. No filter provided - cannot connect landline Are you serious? I did not need fifty words to say this is crap again telstra m m m m m m m m m m m m m m
Extremely Poor Performance – Well, we're onto my third unit now in less than 12 months. Give Telstra their due, they replace the modem within 3 - 5 days...but with the same rubbish!! Our first unit's Wi-Fi failed while the second unit's Ethernet failed. On top of this, all three units have very poor Wi-Fi coverage so unless your in the same room as the modem forget it.… Read more
Telstra did tell me that they were going to send me the Wi-Fi Max unit instead but then backtracked on this and sent the same. I have no choice but to go out this weekend to purchase an alternative (Non-Telstra) Unit.
Telstra Gateway Max TG799vac – It's a plain looking plastic box - top black, bottom white of a coarse finished case and a row of 10 Leds at the front. The back are 4 ethernet ports, 1 WAN, 1x PSTN and two Handset connectors. 6 compatible DECT handsets can be registered to use the gateway as a base station. WiFi is a dual band for 2.4 and 5 GHZ devices to connect either via PIN… Read more
or WPS. The user interface is quite impressive and very well thought out - I have not seen something like this before. So far I've not met a single problem with this box.
The only "pothole in the road", while installation, are the supplied adsl line filters (C10245M) swallowing 1Mbit of my precious line speed - especially painful when your "full" speed is already marginal then 1Mbit (less) can decide over watching your TV stream in SD only hence watch that line filter.
TV streaming is no issue either - my Samsung 7100 is about 10 meters away (in another room) and the WiFi speed is 162Mbps (5Ghz band) hence more than plenty. There are no buffering or stutter issues.
no range – I switched to Telstra and got this telstra gateway max modem. Supposedly $216 value i would hate to have paid for it. Excellent adsl for the first 3 metres. Thats it. My 4 bedroom house and only 1 gets decent wifi. What is the point of wifi if you can only use it in one room.
Very Dissapointing – I got NBN on 18 Jan 2016 and was interested to know its range and speed. Right next to modem, speed is increadible (94 Mbps) but when i got into my room (10 m from modem) its speed decreased to 11 Mbps. Very disappointing to find this out. I was with Telstra on Cable before, its cable modem worked fine, gave better speed even 30 m away (50 Mbps when 30 m away). I recommend, get the latest and better modem from telstra (ac).
Very good modem but sometimes require shut down/ new start – This Telstra Gateway TG797nv3 is a good modem. It delivers good speed and connects well to the computer. Wifi function is very good. However, sometimes, it requires that you turn it off and turn it on again to get your internet connection to work again. Apart from this occasional problem, I am satisfied with this modem.
