Hi Alan, Thanks for contacting us, the self clean function is basically just using the microwave mode to heat/ steam the water that helps break down any food. Once finished you just need a soft cloth / paper towel to wipe down the inside of the microwave.

The total rated power input of this microwave model is 1350W. However, when using the microwave function the max wattage is 800W, so yes it will be slower to reheat food.

thank you, but I decided to purchase on-line via the Whirlpool website today :-) This will be my 3rd crisp and grill. The previous one 'died' just a couple of days ago.

Hi Sharyn, Thank you for contacting us, the MWF427BL microwave is a flatbed crisp and grill, not a convection oven with a fan-forced. This feature is in our Whirlpool model JQ280BL. The MWF427BL microwave has the features steam (with accessory included), grill (with wire rack included), crisp (crisp plate +handle included) and defrost.

For example, when using the “Crisp” setting you can cook a roast chicken, potatoes, frozen pastries ect that will be a crispy golden perfection!
