X Trail T30 Brilliant! – We brought our Nissan X Trail T 30 Auto in July 2007 New just as the update model came in T31. It has been the best car ever, Only recall was the Airbag and we were compensated $850 for that. In the time of ownership I have done all the normal servicing apart from the Cam Chain stretching and needing to be replaced. The Two sensor I also replaced… Read more

Cam and Crank; the only other part that has let go is the Radiator. We would buy another Except for the CVT problems in the new one's we have 280,000 klms on the clock, only on our second battery! Just about to put on our fourth set of Tyres! Great vehicle.

XTrail 2003... Hard to beat my Camry but this comes VERY close – Great car to drive, VERY reasonable for parts if you are resourceful. Drove 10hrs to Brisbane multiple times and usually 150km per week.I have 2093 T30 2.5L auto petrol. I had it in neutral at the lights, lights changed and someone behind me beeped. I instinctively put my foot down and shot the transmission. Had it taken to "nearest joint" by my… Read more

NRMA roadside assistance (was actually far away) and old mate told me because it's a 4WD (BIG job?!) And the cost of the replacement part would be looking at $5000. I confirmed exactly what I was looking for and sourced a replacement part from a wrecker interstate that could be delivered in 3 days for $550! Ebay! After I checked with a few other mechanics I told him that I believe $600 for labour is fair and ended up paying no more than $1150 for the whole thing...

BIG NITE THOUGH: I'd just had new suspension struts springs and coios put in and when I looked under my car not long after, the SPRINGS WERE BLACK not yellow...

2005 X-Trail T30 Series II - Under-rated and often overlooked little workhorse...sometimes older is better – Just over 10 years ago now, we bought our first X-Trail. Since then we've owned 3, all petrol 2005 T30 models, and quite simply, whilst maybe not the best looking sort in the SUV line up, the pros far outweigh the cons for you to consider this as your family day tripper / weekend warrior. Originally, our decision criteria was as follows: We… Read more

wanted a vehicle to use for both the (new) family run about as well as a camping weekender/interstate mover, that was inexpensive on fuel, registration and insurance, and with loads of space for those big trips.

Alongside the X-trail, the line up consisted of the Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, Suzuki Grand Vitara, and Subaru's Forester. Although the pick of the bunch for offroad capability is the Vitara, we wanted something roomier. We decided to steer clear of the Honda due to $$$ and being the least capable off road. The Rav4 and Forester were close 2nd...both great offroad, the Forester had more boot space (amazingly) but the back seat had issues fitting 3 car seats and pretty squishy leg room, and the Rav4 lost points on the swing out rear door (same as the CR-V) and lack of interior space. Which leaves the X-Trail...

We originally bought a manual 2005 ST-X, and as fun as the manual was to drive, we traded in for an automatic 2005 ST a couple months later due to the wife preferring auto transmission. With 78000 Km's on the clock, it was to become our go-everywhere for the next 9 years. Base model, however the previous owner kitted it out with roof racks, towbar, spotties, LED driving head lights, sway bar, and upgraded front disc brakes.

Engine is a 4 cylinder 2.5 litre petrol variant with a 60 litre fuel tank, and a solid 132 kW of output. For a 4cyl engine, it's punchy, and it never let us down. Easy to service, generally inexpensive, we only ever had an issue with perished head rocker gasket at 245,0000 Km's. Fuel economy averages just over 9 - 10 litres/100 Km highway driving, just over 11 around town, depending on how much lead is in that driving foot of yours.

Just to note here, there was a recall for loose butterfly screws on the intake valves in the same engine QRD25DE overseas, and Nissan advised did not affect Aus versions, however there were reports some Aus owners experiencing same issue. Fix was to inspect and loctite the butterfly screws if concerned. There were also a couple other recalls but only affected limited VIN's, see here -> http://australiancar.reviews/reviews.php#!content=recalls&make=Nissan&model=X-Trail&gen=721 <- I've not had any of these issues on the 3 that i've owned, nor on my parents 2004 ST, however please do your homework.

The 4 speed automatic transmission in the T30's are the last of Nissan's "real" auto's, before they went down the CVT route, and are pretty solid. I've had no issues in any of my T30's at all with the transmission. They could do with an extra timing/5th gear, and although they do have an overdrive button on the shifter, I prefer to leave this off for anything other than flat highway driving, and in my experience it's delivered better fuel economy up and down hills and around town.

The 4WD system in the Exy isn't too bad, as far as softroaders go, and is engaged by turning a dial on your centre console. There are 3 modes, 2WD, Auto and 4WD. In 4WD, the rear diff is engaged and locked, delivering power to all 4 wheels at once. Anything over about 35 Km/h will disengage the rear diff automatically. With a set of 70/30 AT'R's (I recommend Yokohama Geolander G012's), you're pretty much set to go most places a car cannot. Ground clearance is decent at 210cm's, but could do with a lift if you don't mind spending the money, and will help you out of a lot more trickier offroad situations. One limitation with this system specifically is they are known to overheat in sand in 4WD mode if used forcefully and for too long, falling back to 2WD mode, which can leave you in a spot of bother. If you remember to lower your tyre pressure and don't drive for too long in 4WD lock mode, you should be fine.

The other main point we chose the X-trail was the boot space. We found they were the biggest across all SUV's we looked at, with an amazing amount of storage in the boot alone, let alone folding the rear seats down. There's more than enough room for trips with 2 kids in car seats, boot full of prams, porta cots and the rest, or a boot full of camping gear (we're talking tent, tarp, poles, mats, bags etc.). Throw a pod on the roof racks and you don't really need a trailer, however the Exy tows one with ease, or a van, with the braked limit being 2 tonne.

That's the main points. Other things to note, the car doesn't feel too large, is easy to navigate in and out of parking, with a decent turning circle. Driving height is perfect. Not too high but not too low. The wife loves it. Decent visibility around all pillars. Dash is in the centre of the car, which took a little bit of getting used to, but is really all good. Plenty of leg room in the back seat. Air con not as cold as Toyota's but better than most. If buying with high km's, check rocker/head gasket and springs/shocks, and for cracked transfer casing. Oh, lastly, check if your coffee mugs fit in the cup holders, they can be a little tight.

Even when our last Exy was excessively damaged in the last hail storm, we chose another T30. Research on the T31's saw they had reduced power output, down to 123 kW, showed they had a few issues early on, with CVT problems, as well as diesel engine issues, so if you're thinking of going down this track, again, do your homework. We've no interest in the T32 variant either. All in all, the T30 is a solid, roomy and inexpensive vehicle for city driving as well as getting off the beaten track. If you can find one with low km's, and check all known issues outlined above, I would recommend in a heartbeat!

13 years later car still drives like new – Wife and I bought this car back in 2004 when I needed it for work using a car allowance. After about a year my job was made redundant and from that time onwards my wife drove it. Then this year I have strted another job with car allowance so we bought a new car, my wife drives that and after 13 years I am back behind the wheel of the X-trail. … Read more

It's done 161k and drives like a dream. Really love this car and don't for a moment regret buying it all those years ago. Will keep this until the wheels come off. Seems economical but don't know know what fuel economy it gets as it does not tell you like modern cars do. Inside interior is practical and good quality materials used. our 3 kids have been through this car and it has held up well. We put seat covers on the seats when new and I only recently took them off as I am driving it now and the cloth seats present like new. The cargo interior is prone to scratching of the plastic though so be mindful of that if you are carrying loads in the back.

Mechanically no trouble over the years, a small issue about six months ago with a faulty sensor in the engine but was easily fixed and was inexpensive to fix. I paid $1600 last week for new brake discs on the rear, 160k service and 4 new tyres and a wheel alignment and balancing and now it drives really well. The Nissan mechanic at the dealership said this series of X-trail lasts a long time and is a very well build vehicle compared to new models on the road today.

Great car, really love it.

Best practical and reliable car I have had – This car will not die. All I have done for servicing is regular oil changes every 5,000kms with air/oil filter changes as per servicing schedule. 338,000kms later I am still running on the original CV joints and drive belts. The auto transmission is still fine with just some chatter from the timing chain and the suspension now a little sloppy. I… Read more

use the vehicle every day and also to tow and transport heavy items in the spacious rear of the wagon. The 4wheel drive has not missed a beat and has pulled me out of some tricky mudholes when I have towed my trail bike into some bushland areas, although for serious bush use fit offroad tyres. Being much lighter than land cruisers etc it is more capable than you would expect in off road conditions.

The reliability is stupendous, ride comfort/interior noise average, interior very good quality with cooling available for drinks in the cupholders and centre console, leather electric seats (TLi model), fully flat load area in rear when rear seat squab folded up.

Have driven this vehicle all over the coastal and interior areas of Australia without a hitch compared to my other vehicle (Subaru outback 2004) which does not come anywhere near the capability of this thing. Economy average around 10l per 100kms and less on a longer run -8l/100kms.

A ridiculously reliable and exceptional vehicle especially with current 2nd hand prices for these.

2.0 petrol engine is dangerously under powered – Had a 2004 X-Trail 2.5 for 5 years. No issues whatsoever during the entire life of the car. another. The 2.0 litre 2WD seemed like the obvious choice as we don't need 4WD. That was until we actually drove one. What a massive disappointment. Maybe it would have been better in manual form but as we needed an auto, that's what we had the misfortune of driving. Totally under powered. I know an X-Trail isn't a performance car but the thought of trying to overtake a truck on an an open road was just plain scary.

We ended up buying a Subaru Outback with 30,000km on the clock and have never looked back. Good Interior Space. Keep Away from the 2.0 engine. Small engine belongs in the Dualis only and even then only in manual guise.

Reliable car, but – X-trail is very reliable car, it has space, comfortable seats, and easy to drive, but after reaching almost 50000 miles, the suspension becomes very firm, the car wont start from the first time, and the AC will break down every summer, its very unstable as well, not recommended for in high speeds.  Show details

n all round good car – I have been running around in a mates x-trail (I think its an 07 model - Petrol Auto) as a result of my car being written off after I was t-boned. I dunno what I expected when I first got in, but I found the car quite comfortable, and ergonomically good - except for the dash in the middle, which would have worked if it were angled toward you,… Read more

but the new model has rectified that...of sort. With the dash in the middle the few of the bonnet and the road is allot better, but I couldn't get used to it and would take the sacrafice and have the guages in the normal spot.

The interior is quite practical, but the lack of any real form of centre console and integrated arm rest made the car more of a buisness than pleasure experience. The gearbox shifted well, and the initial throttle responce was quite good. There was probably too much engine noise for my liking under load, though it was smooth. Overall handling was quite good and steering was well weighted and predictable. Ride height, robust interior, city friendly nature. Lack of centre arm rest, engine noise under load.

Couldn’t recommend it more highly – I do a lot of country, cravel road driving. The X-Trail holds firm to any terrain I have driven on, including the beach. It isn’t big and bulky but definately has ample space for my equipment, and I like how I sit high enough in the seat to have excellent viewing. I like the interior, it isn’t iver crowded. Great fuel efficency and servicing is resonable. I will definately buy another one.  Show details

The reasearch was worth all the hard work – I bought a caravan and needed a vehicle to tow it. When buying a car, I like to get it right because I keep them a long time as I prefer not to chop and change all the time. I have had my present car for 14 years. I chased up various SUVs on the internet and read the qualities they had and what the reviewers said about them. I visited an SUV… Read more

specialist to get his input into my purchase. In all this took me about three months.

At the end of the day, one vehicle kept coming up...the X Trail. I told the SUV specialist what I was planning to do and he said "X Trail."

The caravan I bought has a weight of just over 1-tonne and the XTrail can tow 2 tonne. Most mid size SUVs can only tow one and a half tonnes.

I set myself a budget of $10,000 and started looking on the internet for one. They varied considerably in price and like so many SUVs out there they were high mileage. Anything under 150,000ks was a rarity at that price. I narrowed it down to three, all with under 150,000ks. Only one was under $10,000 and it was a 2007 top of the range model with 132,000 on the clock with one owner from new.

I took it for a test drive and knew I had found the right one, especially as I saw another one exactly the same a few weeks later which was another $3,000.

The XTrail ticked all the boxes. It has a four cylinder 2.4litre engine but because of the gear ratios, it pulls caravans very easily. I love the small adjustable driving wheel as it doesn't feel as though I am driving a truck. The boxy shape and large windows make for very easy driving and reversing is a piece of cake.

Inside, there is plenty of room for everyone even in the back seats, and with the back seat down and the seat cushions folded forward, the storage space is enormous. Another use I have for it is to transport goods to my market stall. The load space is very flat and wide.

One thing that did surprise me was how economical it was. If I use it for normal use around town in 2 wheel drive, I can go on a full tank for a long time and it runs on 91 RON. If I want to go off road it has 4 wheel drive. Being top of the range it has all the extras like cruise, sunroof, cloth seats, air con, power steering and windows, CD player radio, and I think it has got Bluetooth but I am not up with that yet.

The steering is very light in 2 wheel drive and tightens up when in 4 wheel drive. There is plenty of storage room in the front and back and at the back of the rear is a socket for charging or using electrical attachments like a tyre pump. The spare wheel is a full size one.

I have not had it long enough to know how reliable it is, but like all vehicles, if you look after them and get them serviced regularly they will treat you kind.

If I had money to spare and could afford a more expensive newer SUV no doubt I would have done better for myself. But when you are on a budget, you have to find the best you can for the money available. I believe this is what I have done with the XTrail.

Oh, I forgot to say that in reading reviews or comparisons the XTrail was always in the top two.

for the type of car it is, acceptable.

The quirky speedo in the center takes time to get accustomed to but the bonus is you get an extra glove-box or storage compartment for the driver & I think its great.

Massive sunroof, electric leather seats, climate control and cruise control. Plenty of extras to keep you satisfied.

Its a roomy car with just the right amount of leg room for people in the rear. Large cargo area and with the rear seats folded flat, its massive.

Off-road the X-Trail is a competent vehicle. Just switch the AWD dial and she'll easily scoot up any fire trail or through the muddy tracks with ease. Just keep in mind it hasn't got low range so there are limitations. But I have never been stuck.

Mechanically the X-trail has never failed. I do all my own servicing and repairs and its a very reliable car.

Servicing parts are cheap and readily available and its an easy car to work on.

Fuel economy is acceptable for the type of car it is. As with any car if driven hard it does use more but driven sensibly its just fine.

We have just updated to the latest Corolla but no way we are ready to part with our X-Trail. We just love it too much.

Our biggest complaint is that it is quite 'thirsty' and has terrible body roll. I get quite car sick in the front seat as a passenger because of the body roll. It's so bad it also makes you feel like you could tip over! Other complaints are that the steering is very light which can exacerbate drifting if you are not careful. The interior is also not very pleasing to the eye and the back row has no air vents for heating or cooling. And one other complaint is that it is gutless, which I suppose is to be expected - It's a heavy 4cyl car with virtually no torque (having said that, we have towed a trailer full of sand but it strrruuugled to get up hills). Overall, this car has suited us well and has met our needs. Roomy. Large boot. Comfortable. Well priced, family 4x4. Fuel economy not great. Lacks power. Terrible body roll. Steering is a bit too light. Interior is unattractive & outdated. No air vents in the back row.

Best Car I Ever Owned – My 2003 Ti Luxury X-Trail has been the best car i have ever owned and driven. I usually buy another car every 1.5-2 years however I held onto my X-Trail for over 3 years and only sold it as it had nearly reached 200,000kms. If the kms where lower I'd still be driving it. Not only did I enjoy driving this car it has been the most reliable and… Read more

practical car and is also the perfect size and not to big for city car parking. The car also offers plenty of room to seat 4-5 adults rather comfortably. My only 2 issues with this car was that the cam and crank angle sensors needed to be replaced as it failed at 190,000 kms this was only a $220 problem to fix at my local auto electrician. The other problem was the front passenger electric window switch stopped working so we just purchased a second hand switch from the wreckers for $30 and fitted it ourselves. The other great thing about these X-Trails is that they are everywhere and are easy to find replacement parts. I kept mine serviced ever 10,000 kms and never had any other issues. I am actually looking at selling the car I just replaced it with to buy an X-Trail again. All the room for a medium sized car, reliability, the massive sunroof, the way the back seats fold down flat and the location of the cruise control on the steering wheel so you don't have to take your hands off it. The interior does look very dated when you compare it to other cars that age, it would have been better with air vents in the back.

Great reliable car – I have a 2007 ti model and I would recommend this to anyone with a family. It has loads of room and is fairly economical on petrol due to the smaller engine size. It faults are in its power and lack of extras. But I have a manual which seems to negate the power issue and the cars features have since been upgraded in later models. size, price and economy Power is a bit short. The best car I ever owned – I bought my x trail brand new and had to sell it 200,000. Totally reliable, consistanly getting 8.5L/100km. awesome on fuel for a SUV that size. Handles great, sounds and goes great with a sports exhaust system. Very comfortable. Heaps of room. I would buy another one today if I could. Performance, handling, reliability, fuel economy, Comfort, Standard features on the Ti, towing ability.  Show details

Excellent – We have an '03 model, and have never had any mechanical problems with it whatsoever. We recommend x-trails without fault, and will be looking at upgrading to a newer model when this one gets a little older. We absolutely love our x-trail, it has loads of space for our prams/pets etc, and the removeable tough-deck panels in the boot are so easy to… Read more

hose off to clean. It handles like a small car, is really easy to park, and uses less fuel than we anticipated, and when we've used it in 4wd off road, it's been really easy to handle (even for a lady driver!). The centre-placed dash instruments were a bit difficult to get used to at first, but now we think they're great, with the storage compartment in front of the steering wheel really handy. The shopping hooks in the boot are great for bags of bottles etc. The base of the front seats are shorter than in any of our previous cars, making it a little uncomfortable on really long drives for long-legged people. The gearbox in our manual can be a little 'clunky' until you get used to it.

Excellent – Would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a great car reliable, fuel efficient and comfortable. In fact I have wrapped it up so much that my daughter and son-in-law have brought one also(2004 model) they love it too. Highly recommend this car, in the future will be looking at updating to a newer version. Love the nissan x trail (model 2002)… Read more

brought one this year out of necessatity (old car died) I do family daycare and needed a larger car. Could not have picked a better vechile. Love the fact that I feel safe driving it. Can see things for miles. All the children fit comfortably (3 children in car seats) and we still have space. It handles really well on the roads and visability through out the car is great. The only thing I can fault is the fact that sometimes when you take of at the traffic lights the wheels tend to spin (squeal)
