Should have kept my old one – Very disappointed in the new dual boiler. Once I gave away my old one (which I loved for 7 years and had repaired for a friend) and set up the new the milk boiler had a funny ticking sound. I returned it to JB HI Fi and they swapped it for another (but I lost my good warranty with them, another story) and it did exactly the same thing!!! I sent… Read more

the video to Breville who said they escalate and get back to me and four weeks later no response and now it’s stopped working and sitting in a long line up for repairs at the local repair shop!! I’m livid as Breville couldn’t be bothered to get back to me, now I’ve got no machine for up to 6 weeks and it was an obvious fault in both machines. Tinny crappy product with equally bad service. Time for a new brand. Interesting I tried to leave a review via JB Hi Fi on the machine and their warranty and they declined it!!!!

best I have had so far1 – The fourth coffee machine I bought for home and I love it. It is suitable for someone with some experience of manual steaming milk. The best thing about it is I can steam and make expresso shorts at the same time. So I dont' let my expresso or my milk wait. Also milk steaming is quite powerful and quite fast. It really turn the milk and make… Read more

Efficient, effective and easy to use for cafe quality espresso at home – Had been waiting for this machine to be on sale and picked it up in the post Christmas sales. Works very well. I get consistent cafe quality espresso using it with the BCG820 grinder that goes with it. I like the timer function for the pour, very handy. The milk frothing function is fast and effective. Much faster than other espresso machines I… Read more

have used previously. I am a hobby home 'barista' (making espresso coffee at home for the last 13 years), this is my 4th machine with a commercial group head. So far so good. I intend to use filtered water though, rather than paying for new filters in the tank every 3 months. I have never had issues with this approach previously, with machines lasting well over the years

Makes beautiful coffee and perfect micro foam – I purchased this double boiler machine when they first came out onto the market so that makes it 8 years plus and it's still going strong. Took awhile to master however now according to family members I am producing coffee as good, if not better, as cafes. The machine is ready to use in around 5 minutes from turning it on. can be set into the lcd interface which also incorporates a timer etc. You can even back flush with this machine with the water draining into the drip tray. One mastered the micro foam is equal to that of top end machines and allows me to produce great latte art. To protect the machine I use bottled water. It is a tank machine and for built in safety not only goes it flash a warning when the water level is low it will not allow the pump to work until the tank is replenished with water. Came with two single & two double baskets being single and double walled. The secret to great coffee is buying a decent grinder. I bought the Breville grinder with the machine however 6 months ago I purchased a new grinder in the $600 range and the improvement in the quality of the shots was immediate. No matter how much you pay for a machine if you use supermarket coffee or a low level grinder you will never experience great coffee. I am so impressed with this machine I intend to keep it until it finally died. With 12 years plus of use I am super impressed with this double boiler, being able to extract and steam milk at the same time. It also has a hot water spout for tea etc. I have had it serviced twice so they may have helped the longevity of the machine. Five star ratting from me.

really disappointed – I originally bought the machine 3 years ago, kept it in storage in the box for 2 years than started using it. Lasted less than 1 year and then I got ERR1. I have taken the machine to get repaired and been told that Breville doesnt manufacture the NTC sensor anymore and cannot be repaired. Breakdown - Breville unhelpful – My 5-year old machine won't pressurize. Breville sent me to the authorized service agent in Canberra where I was told I would have to wait 3 weeks to book it in, and then another 10-12 weeks for repairs. I called Breville to complain about the situation only to be told repeatedly, "we've never had problems with the service agent before" as if… Read more

previous history was relevant. I then wrote to Breville and was offered a new machine for $1079, which is hardly generous. After much back and forth regarding my concerns about the responsiveness of the authorized agent, I was eventually told that I could get it fixed anywhere because it was anyhow out of warranty. The message ended with "sorry we cannot assist" . I wasted a lot of time and got nowhere. Breville used to be much more responsive to its customers, which inspired me to buy more of the company's products (and shares), but something appears to have changed. Perhaps the company has grown too fast or is more focused on US market?

Excellent! – LOVE THIS MACHINE! It looks great. Steams milk fantastically. Consistent and no issues until 7 years down the track. Will definitely buy the new model when getting the next one. The only issue is that some of the black paint chipped off early on, and there was some rust in the opening for the water. but that's all superficial! didn't affect the quality. Show details

Good when it works – We have had our machine for 8 years, i.e. we purchased the BES900. In that time, it has had 3 vibration pumps (the 1st was replaced under warranty within the 1st year, the 3rd has just failed). It has also had new seals, been descaled twice by the technician (because this model could not be descaled by the end user), had a new group head and steam… Read more

wand.

When it works, it makes very consistent, wonderful coffee, far better than the usual bitter or sour product served at most cafes. Of course to do this, you also need to pair it with a very good and consistent grinder (we have a Rancilio, which is flawless). This time, after a new group head, new seals, new steam wand & descale, it has lasted 2.5 years without any issues. This is the longest that it has gone without any components breaking down.

We make 4 coffees a day, all with milk. The machine is powered down after use each time. We backflush daily & do a clean when prompted by the display.

In conclusion, this is a great entry level machine if you want to start with proper technique & make real coffee. It is also the best machine for this, for this price. Anything more will cost you more than twice as much. However don't expect this machine to last without parts needing to be replaced. I see that Breville is now offering a 4-yr warranty. TAKE IT.

Good coffee machine – I have been using this machine for a number of years now and have been very happy with it. Good Coffee quality and is easy to customise settings. Not great for the cleaning capacity though. I think it is poor form of Breville to expect that the machine must go to a service centre to be descaled. There are lots of machines that do this at home. You would get a 5 star review if the machine could be serviced more effectively by home users/  Show details

Reading the other reviews. Seems like a poor product. Breville sounds like they are not interested.

I think we have had the machine about 4 years. What is glaringly obvious is the lack of response from Breville. They only responses on the site are for those with a win for Breville.....calculated

Great design ... until it stops working – When we first got this, it was great. Good design: front access to water tank, OPV for accurate control of extraction pressure, good performance of frother and extraction. Then after a few years, the issues started: leaks, inconsistent extraction pressure. What's worse is there are no authorized Breville service agents in Wollongong, meaning a… Read more

Major problems after 4 years – I'm sad. We donated our Breville Café Roma to the Salvation Army before we moved, it would be about 13 years old by now. Still working, still able to make good quality espresso daily, better than a lot of cafes. Our 4 year old BES900 spat the dummy today. The steam valve had developed a slow leak over time, and the guts of this $2000 appliance… Read more

are rust! This was obviously causing the overheating, safety switch trip in the fuse box and sub-par extractions of late. Did I mention it is now an electrical hazard?

The little Roma would have outlasted it more than 3:1. This can't be right, the BES900 was a $2000 flagship espresso machine, you could almost call it professional. All the R&D that Breville put in, the testing, a history of good quality with a brand like Breville to back it up the BDB should be outlasting the old cheapie. Especially when Breville "took the best from the commercial world" to put into a domestic product.

The Roma was a $150 entry-level machine we got from Flybuys 13 years ago back in NZ. AND NOW WE HAVE NO COFFEE BECAUSE WE LET IT GO, naively thinking the BDB had years of life in it. Big mistake.

Phil, the demonstrations, threads on forums had all convinced us to buy the BDB, and we convinced 4 of our friends to buy the BES900 and its successor BES920. That's four additional sales of an expensive kitchen appliance, none of which by the way have suffered the problems we had. Maybe we got the one built on a Friday afternoon. Such a shame.

I figure that a machine that produces around 2500 coffees a year is a good investment. I have owned this machine since 2012, I de-scale as soon as the machine tells me, I run the boiler at 89deg, I play with the blends and grind, and people still love coming to mine for a hit.

Funny Breville has known abut for ages but never made any effort to contact its customers (the repairer states this is common with the unit). When I contacted Breville they pretended the issue didn't exist and did the whole 'its out of warranty thing'. Not much in the way of customer generosity for such a large company. entire group head assembly at a cost of circa $200.

To add insult injury, tiny grommet like washers needed to be replaced, at cost of $2 each. These can't cost much more than a few cents each to make.

What should have been a trivial repair ended up costing circa $500.

The repair centre said they are bound to using Breville genuine parts and Breville is the cause of this racket.

I'll give this machine one last go, but if it needs further repair of this nature, it's going to the kerb and I'll be buying something Italian.

Great coffee:until it breaks – I Have had the 900 for three years now, it worked great for about 18 months then it broke took, it took months for the machine to be repaired with many frustrating calls to Breville. I have had it back for 12 months and has broken again of course outside of warranty now, breville have refused to fix it, and the repairs will cost $500. It is so disappointing that you can spend over $1000 on a coffee machine and it not last more than 18months.  Show details

We approached Breville with the reply that they would give us a 40 % discount on a new model and that we should have had the machine regularly serviced. While the price point for this machine makes it very attractive, I will now replace it with something likely to cost at least 3 times as much, but is more likely to deliver my coffee in the morning, every morning. Also, having used the "Smart Grinder" at the accompanying course when I bought this machine, I would stay away from that item. It does not grind consistently finely. Anyway Another week passed and I called to see if they received it. The same agent said "Check with Australia Post" I said "No, Im checking with you and I didn't send it through Australia Post". I asked if she could follow it up.

She kindly did return a call advising the repair people were looking at it and they would call me.

We are looking at a $1500 machine, not a $200 one. All I need to know is can it be fixed. If they are short on repairmen, hire more, outsource.... But Better customer service is required.
