Breville the Toast & Roast BOV550 Questions & Answers
VerifiedInherited this model, how is best to clean the inside? Is oven cleaner okay?
hi Sandra. not sure Id use oven cleaner. its a great little oven apart from the door issue. might be better to look onthe internet for good ways to clean an oven. there are so many tricks people have that dont involve harsh cleaners like you would use in a normal oven.
Thankyou.
Dear Breville team. Hope you’re still checking these messages even tho the product has been discontinued. I was looking it up to make sure I collect up all the accessories when giving my old oven away. I now see EVERYONE moaned about the door fault. I feel cheated for having put up with it, thinking it was just my oven. Grrrrrrr. Otherwise it’s been a great wee oven.
I did discover if you bang the door hard each time you open it, it will stay closed. So it can still be useable. it cooks well.
Hello Rose You may be interested to know I purchased this oven in 2014, opened the carton tried to heat a pie and the door fell right off the oven!!!....I put it away for 8 years until today (June 24 2022) to investigate and repair the door hinges spring and glass (I am a technician and this is in my sphere of experience). After disassembling the entire oven and marvelling at the very poor build quality, I increased door spring tension, lubricated all moving parts with a graphite powder or food grade Inox oil, I bonded the hinge pins and glass door with epoxy resin and RTV silicon. It's sitting on the kitchen bench, tested working the door is good....waiting for me to put in a frozen meat pie for lunch. It's been a long road.....
Hi Cam I laughed to see your message turn up 2 years after I posted mine. My replacement oven is a gem, with a decent door, although the hinges are scratchy so your suggestions for lubrication are appreciated. No need to alert everyone in the house to what I might be cooking up.
Why does this oven take 90 minutes to cook potato and other vege bakes when it should take half the time? Recipes say at 200 or 220 it should take 40 minutes but they remain rock hard until at least at least an hour later.. Puzzled as it works perfectly for other dishes
You probably aren't cutting them up small enough. Try doing it in a regular oven and you'll probably have the same problem. Or if you are using the rotisserie at the same time, don't forget that it only turns the top element on, so anything cooking in the pan will take a lot longer.
No I cut veges into cubes or thin slices with potatoes for the bake.. and they take much longer than the recipes say .. So i have either heat loss somewhere or maybe an element is not working.. will have to investigate further.
I have had my oven since approximately 2012/2013. When I turn it on the heating elements don't work i.e. the oven does not heat up. In view of the age of the oven is this an easy fix? I use the rotisserie mostly and it works if I stick to the recommended weight but It is starting to sound not right - although the noise may have been the heating element beginning to fail.
hi Trish. sorry Im just a customer like you, but personally I would look at getting another oven if you have had it over 5 years. They arent very expensive really. cheers
It's time to buy a new one. All of ours have failed within 3 years. The elements are not replaceable.
All I needed to know thanks
Can i bake cakes in my breville toast &roast lov560?
Has the door problem been fixed?
hi. No they didn't seem interested. But I did discover if I bang the bottom corner of the door after I close it, it stays closed. I think this model has now been discontinued.
Thanks for that - really wanted that model because of the capacity, but settled on a slightly smaller, dearer one. We are Kiwis!!
Hi,
I like the idea of these
but has the door problem been fixed yet?
Sorry I don't know. Mine is still good and when I open it I have a small towel underneath the opening, to give it some support. I love it.
My door didn't get fixed. The oven was replaced with a sunbeam which is no where near as good as the Breville. The problem with mine was that the door didn't close unless I held it shut :(
Have a look at the BOV845 instead, a far superior offering, also from Breville. There's a discussion thread here: http://www.productreview.com.au/p/breville-the-smart-oven-pro.html So far we have been very happy with our BOV845. The door shuts firmly. It is used daily. However, from reading the thread it appears others have had problems but I don't think anyone has had trouble obtaining a replacement or a refund.
Our BOV845 continues to impress us with its performance, but I can't recommend the BOV550.

Thank you very much for your quick reply, I just needed that extra little bit of info and I have done it. A really good instruction manual with some great looking Aussie recipes and operating instructions & care of the oven.
Thank you once again

I purchased one in October 2015 and then in March 2016 the door wouldn't open or shut (a faulty hinge?). Returned it to Harvey Norman who replaced it promptly. Now, (May 2016) the door is not shutting on the right hand side and the heat is escaping from the replacement model. Very frustrating when I had done research and thought I was getting a good model.
Hi Nesie - please contact customer service for best advise on this matter. Thanks, the Breville team
Returned the replacement model back to Harvey Norman who gave my money back - no fuss or bother so big thumbs up to them. However, I am now finding it difficult to find another that does all that the Breville Toast and Roast did. If only Breville could fix the issue with the door - maybe it has something to do with the fact that the door is curved??
Bought the BOV550 oven in March 2014 and find the hinges have given out and there is an approx 2cm gap at the top therefore letting the heat out - can you advise what is the procedure to correct this fault?
Hi Jennie - please contact customer service for instructions - 1300 139 798. Thanks, the Breville team

Please advise! Thanks! Jenny

Can it bake cakes & are baking tins that will fit hard to come by
It fits our biggest cake tin -28cm or 11" & I baked our christmas cake in that tin & it rose to 12cm high (with a paper height extender because the tin was only 9cm high). It comes with a pizza tray & a roasting dish. It has one wire rack, but we had one from an old sunbeam bench top that fits so we can cook on 2 levels at once -great when doing pizzas for a family.
I baked biscuits & scones before the door stuffed up. Just make sure the oven is heated to the correct temperature first as the elements are very close and can burn easily.
how big of a chicken or turkey will fit when using the rotisserie?
The maximum weight using the rotisserie is a 1.5kg chicken or turkey
