When switch the CIGWELD inverter 170 on, it go off by itself after 6 seconds.. why?
I have a cigweld 170 that is well looked after (looks brand new) has only need used less than 10 times, now runs at full power. If I turn the dial down fully, I get about 20 seconds but by that point the entire rod is glowing and soft, then it trips on overtemp. If I turn the dial up it just goes straight to overstep without starting an arc.
Graham, Sorry for the slow response. I only just saw this question now. This sounds like a problem that is beyond my knowledge. Please send an email to Technical@cigweld.com.au and they will be able to assist you.
I’m having the same issue
Hi I have a Cigweld 170hf.the problem is,when you plug in it and turn it on there is a power, but after a minute it will shot down.thanks for your answer..
Ro C. This is probably above skill level for me to advise you. Please send me your email or phone number and I will get someone from our technical team to contact you directly to help you.
hi wally here did as you sugested still no arc power on fan on all leads connected properly still no arc
Probably needs an electronics whiz to sort it. Biggest problem with these welders is their electronics. Mine is playing up too, clearly voltage is uncontrolled. Turn it off, restart and she’s good for one rod then she blows things to bits. Pulls an arc about 50mm long. Mine will go in the bin, same as my previous inverter welder. But 20+years ago, these little welders were the ducks nuts. Cost around $1500. Now they’re just more China rubbish.
hi have a cigweld 180 amp inverter stick welder power on fan on but cant strike an arck
HI Wally - The best would be to practice on a piece of scrap plate. Sometimes its caused by making too heavy contact with the metal and not withdrawing the electrode quickly enough. A low amp on the machine will accentuate it. This maybe solved by scratching the electrode along the plate surface like you would strike a match. When the arc is established keep approx 1.5mm to 3.2mm gap between the electrode and the metal. Draw the electrode slowly along as it melts down. If you need any further help please contact Customer Care on 1300654674 or jump on our website at cigweld.com.au and livechat with one of our team
my welder is not working, it just went off i plug it in and turn the switch on but just not working. Please advise?
I've used a similar one and I found that the mode switch is touchy between the manual arc and lift tig. Sometimes I have to toggle it a few times before the man arc kicks in
My cigweld 170 powers a 2mm rod but has lost power to do a 3mm rod..it cannot produce enough arc and keeps sticking..what is wrong with it?
I have a weldskill 170 that when you try to strike an arc the overheat light comes on, It has done this every now & then, requires switching of & back on & is generally ok for awhile, however now it just keeps putting o/heat light on & is unusable. Anyone know how or where to fix this problem,as I would like to keep it going as it is an excellent welder when working, It has done very little work.
Hi Jacko, I have the same machine with the exact same symptoms as yours. Did you find a solution to fix yours, Thanks Shayne
How to adjust amps, mine is sitting at 50amps and won't go higher
The Amp Adjustment knob need replacing , it is faulty.
Someone in my workshop has broken the wires (2)for the tig trigger . I just need to know which wire goes in which hole n the plug help please?
What would make it trip out all the time
power breaker in the meter box it needs to maybe to be replaced .
Hi my cigweld 170 switches on for 1 minute and gets off completely. can anyone help me?
Buy a brand new Arc Welder better nowadays.
Overheat light comes on when I strike an arc what is wrong with welder ?
My Weldskill 170 Inverter does the same thing. I am going to open it up and see what is going on with it. It can't overheat on the first strike so there is some deeper problem lurking behind the covers.
I had same issue and found the fault. It's the heat sensor( circuit thermal switch OHD3- 75B) at bottom of machine. It has 2 wires going into top part of machine circuit board. It's cheap and easy to replace. I at first bridged it to prove it was at fault and it worked like new again. Ordered part and replaced. Happy welder again. Good luck
Hey mate I’m in New Zealand where abouts did you source the part and did you just fix it yourself .cheers
Mine exact same problem part on order easy fix note is 110v but my techi said must have voltage drop circuit from 240v
My techi freind did altmeter test on the switch at bottom of unit once cover off has a wire in out cost is around $14 do a google part number 2 sites one Australia other USA. BE CARFULL AN EASY FIX HIGH VOLTAGE CAPS. Better than electric fance energiser. He also gave it a squrt of nitrogen to show fault. A Tv repair place should know about the fix if you not game,
I have a CIG weldskill 170.
I have used this in my workshop for many years without issue.
It now stops at the 1st arc with the over heat light on.
I wanted to open up the enclosure to check the internals but cannot find information on how to do this.
Can anyone guide me to the information for this.
Get the welder repaired or buy new model of cigweld 180 amp for about $289.00 new .
I decided not to get my Weldskill 170 repaired. However I will open it up to look for anything obviously wrong and maybe repair to sell it on.
I have purchased a new Transmig 185 ultra. This machine has a wide range of functions. MIG TIG And Stick.
All these Chow welders work well till they don't work at all. Old fashioned buzz boxes lasted forever coz their components were big and simple. (like me} but these modern exotic things are full of fragile computer/swiss watch bits that will also last forever if you keep it on a desk and don't move it. How long will your laptop last being dragged around the shed, bouncing down the road in the back of the ute and being left in the cold and dusty garage ??????

Have a 170 cigweld. Plug to power green light is on + fan is running when striking no sparks?
Connect your earth clamp to the workpiece.
I have same problem and steelmills sarcastic answer isn't helping anyone.
I have a CIGWELD ( weldSkill)/welding machine blue color ... 170 inverter
Plugged 240volts but no sign of power, check at terminal there is 240volts but no fan, power on all not working, please tell what is the possible cause.
Cheers,
Bob
IF the cigweld welder has no signs of power , replace with a brand new Arc Welder .
