Planned Obsolescence? – After 9 years, the motor on my faithful but very expensive Dyson DC19 died with a cough and the smell of burnt electrics. I contacted their service centre to see what my options were regarding a repair only to be told that the DC19 is now a "retired" machine, with no parts available for repairs. I was offered a 25% discount on the RETAIL price… Read more

of a new Dyson, which was pleasing to hear, but given the price of their products even 25% off leaves the Dyson still an expensive purchase. This could be an attractive proposition, if one could be sure that the product was a little more robust. It is not unreasonable to expect that a highly engineered and high priced product to have some longevity factored into it's construction. The only conclusion I can draw is that to save a few cents at the time of purchase, the engineering did not extend to the motor. I have a 25 year old Panasonic still going well, which begs the question why can't Dyson engineer the motors on their vacuums to be likewise. Reading these pages it would seem my case is not an isolated case, rather, it would seem to be the rule.

Lasted the distance – Our Dyson DC19 just died after 8 years of faithful service (purchased June 2008). This vacuum cleaner has lived through several house moves, renovations, 2 dogs and the usual dust from a 3 person household. It is quite heavy and bulky but from what I've read in other reviews, these older models are more robust than the current ones. I've… Read more

called the Service Centre (in Brisbane) and they suspect the motor has burned out and will cost $155 to replace. There was a burnt smell and spluttering sound. This includes the part ($80), labour ($65) and shipping back to me ($10). They could also arrange an Australia Post label so that I could drop off to the post office where they will collect it. They will have a look at the machine first, give you a quote and if you decide not to proceed they send back the machine free of charge.

Thought about replacing the motor but have just bought a new vacuum instead (Miele which has so much more suction, though it is a bagged vacuum). Still, I'll be sad to see this Dyson go as it was very reliable. The customer service from Dyson is also pretty good.

Excellent customer support – My DC19 turbine head stopped working after 5 years and 10 months. I got onto the Dyson website and asked them if they could help me and so they did. they replaced my Turbine head with a brand new one at a fraction of the cost it would have cot me to replace it thought Harvey Norman. to buy a new vacuum cleaner and the cost to replace my vacuum was in the region of $450 so I thought why not phone Dyson and see what they could do for me. They gave me and approximate quote and I sent it to them. I got the Vacuum cleaner back. Look like new with a few new parts including the motor and runs like brand new. The total cost for the new motor and courier delivery there and back = $165. If I have to pay that money every six years for a quality vacuum cleaner every 6 years I'm okay with that.

I had a Kirby rep in my house some years ago and he pitted my old Dyson DC05 against his Kirby. I did prove one thing, that was his Kirby didn't do any better job than my Dyson( Incidently the DC05 is still going) At +/- $5000 I just could not see the justification in buying something that I use once a week for an hour. I have used Miele's, Electrolux's, Hoover's and there isnt a vacuum cleaner in that class that comes close to the Dyson. It is simply the best value for money and highest quality vacuum I have ever used.

I passed on the DC05 to my daughter who is using it in her home and it hasnt missed a beat. Great product dyson.

11yrs old and going strong – Used once a week for 11 years. Lots of stairs, carpets, hard floors, long human hair and multiple homes. Flaw 1: not perfect with big bits (need to lift and place head onto them or remove head altogether). Flaw 2: a bit awkward to vac stairs. Pros: very effective suction for 11 years - the grime it pulled out of carpet each time I’d moved in to a… Read more

new place was phenomenal and disgusting. Easy to use and maintain. It also helped reducing my asthma at home. I had one fault with the machine 2.5 years in, the turbine head stopped spinning. Dyson replaced within the week (out of warranty) free of charge. No issue since. I’m refurbing it this week with third-party filters and a clean. About to add a v10 or V11 to the household thanks to my Dyson experience to date.

Good machine but with no spare part it is useless!!! – 10 years on and Dyson cannot provide me with pre and post filters whoch cost around $40 together. Instead, I was told to outsource them from Dyson Uk or buy another machine with 25% off!!!! The issue here is that why I should pay another $700-800 for. Ethical by Dyson for not providing spare parts and forces its customers to purchase another machine which would end of being “partless” in so many years and the story continues on. Bery happy with the machine itself but extremely disapointed with the tactic Dyson uses to sell its products.

I was even told by Dyson Customer service that I dont have to buy another Dyson product!!! What a great way of keeping their loyal customer.

good for 5 years ONLY – Bought a Dyson DC19 about 5 years ago. It blew up on me last week, really disappointed as I knew I would have to dispose of it in a eco friendly way which costs $$ and is a pain in the butt. Best vac I've ever owned – Bought this 2nd hand and it's never missed a beat. This vacuum is light to handle, runs and swivels smoothly from wooden and tiled floors to carpeted rugs picking up everything in its path including hair. afterwards is the easiest thing ready to go for the next time use. The pressure trigger on the handle for lighter cotton blend rugs when I don't need full suction is great. It's powerful but quiet compared to previous vacuums and doesn't take up much space to store away. I hope this keeps running for many more years to come.

12 Years & Going Strong – We Love our Dyson. Great investment that we can’t live without. It is great on carpet and on our new floor boards. We’ve used it inside and our outdoor entertaining area. Doesn’t suit tall people – I find this machine excellent. However like most vacuum cleaners the “wand” or the bit you run over the floor needs to form a seal between the head and the floor to get full suction. If you’re tall, you have to bend over to achieve the right angle and get head in full contact with the floor to be effective. Otherwise, you’ll leave a gap around the… Read more

head of the brush and air will leak in.

If you’re 150 cm tall then the length of the wand is perfect. If you’re 195cm tall, then this cleaner doesn’t match your body height. I dare say the latest models, would be just as bad.

Best vacuum ever – Used this Dyson for 10 years now, and is still going strong. Never missed a beat. Would only ever buy a Dyson now if this one ever packs it in. Lost the love of my life today DC19 – I have excessive hoovering habits and also use it for my work as a private cleaner. My DC19 died today after 8 solid years hard graft! Brilliant while it lasted!! – loved it while it went - then out of the blue, just smelt of hot electrical smell, and could see changes in ON/OFF switch, spluttering noise as well. very scary! BUT the suction continued just the same. We put it away for fear of fire or worse, but I have read reviews stating it can probably be fixed if I send it to them. will try in their business hours as this would be very acceptable to me.

Avoid Dyson I would say – I heard a lot about Dyson so when I could spare the $800 I went and got DC19 and DC 31. While DC19 amazed us with what it pulled out of carpets after we had Kambrook, the DC 31 felt like $300 toy good for picking up crumbs from the table. They both 4+ years old and honestly hardly used as kids moved out and there is rare need to vacuum. DC 31 is… Read more

still useless, I tried it on the salt yesterday from the carpet after wine was spilled and had to drag the big one out as it would take forever.

DC 19 still has great suction power but after 3 years the tiny, tiny plastic fan broke inside the turbo head making it non functional. Dyson made it not replaceable - even that DYI repair would be around $2 if only they would sell the fans. I emailed Dyson and was treated like a pest - we don't sell any fans, just go and get new head. So $129 head only lasts 3 years? There is tons of posts on the net regarding that head.

Now not only I'm stuck with vacuum cleaner which can't do carpets anymore but even if I was in the position to pay $129 EVERY 3 years or less for new head they actually discontinued it from sales forcing customers into buying the whole new vacuum cleaner.

No more Dyson for me. Miele may be more expensive and less aesthetically but from what I read and heard they at least have proper customer service and stand behind their product.

Shame on you Dyson

Stay away, complete rubbish motor blew AFTER 2 YEARS – Paid $450. Developed a burning smell just when out of manufacturer's warranty, was advised that the Motor needs to be replaced. Now dead, the filters get washed and Well Dried Every 6 months or less and the dirt collector washed every month, why is it that such a good brand has died so quickly, I look after it well and it looks brand new, this was my first Dyson, brought brand new when I moved into my new home, what a let down, these are not a cheap and there reputation for being a long lasting vacuum clean has me wondering what I do now, I've been let down by Dyson.

This unit was great, very sturdy, well-built did & did not break easily. You'd have to go very hard on it break it physically. I would buy another without hesitation ... but they don't make them anymore.

My wife decided to buy a 2nd Dyson the DC54 filter less multi floor model and it is not a touch on as well built as the DC19. I think somebody in the Dyson factory got a bonus for reducing production costs & components cost saving.

i intend to write a review about that model as well the DC54 & it will only be getting 1 Star, i'm expecting it to break within the year.

Poor performance for the money – We have had a Dyson DC19 vacuum cleaner for the past 3 years and, for the money, it is not an impressive cleaner! We purchased it new so we did not inherit someone else's problems. It does not perform anywhere near as well as we had expected and nowhere near as well as an equivalently priced Miele or comparable vacuum. And it is way noisier… Read more

(especially with the turbo head attached...it literally screams, and can be heard two houses away when used on a timber floor). On many occasions I have tried to establish why this head is so noisy but there appears to be nothing wrong with it...it is just a badly designed piece of equipment, with the brush roller rotating around one central bearing and being free to simply flop around in the head housing at either end. Vacuuming performance is adequate on carpet, but only just...it will not remove dog hair from carpets and because of its peripheral brush design in the cleaning head it tends to push material around a smooth or tiled floor, rather than pick it up.

The overall design is overly complicated with lots of nooks and crevices which seem to add nothing to the operation. It is almost as though Dyson have concentrated on a visual design brief rather than a functional one! I have had the machine looked at by a professional serviceman but was told there is nothing wrong with it....what you see is what you get!

We have given it three years and really don't want to put up with it any longer. I have in the past few weeks had the opportunity to try two other good quality makes of vacuum and both perform considerably better than the Dyson.

If this vacuum was at the lower end of the cost scale I would be more inclined to accept it but, it was one of the most expensive vacuums on the market when we bought it and we are really disappointed.

Would not recommend... Compact Poor performance, difficult to adequately clean
