With a little TLC, a Jazz should keep running forever – Bought a Jazz brand new in 2005 for my wife. She uses it mainly for commuting, the school run and the occasional road trip. We also use it for those occasions where we need to move bulky items, as it's the largest car either of us owns. So far, the Jazz only let her down once. This was due to a wear and tear item, being the battery. Other… Read more · 1
than wear and tear items like brakes, tyres, batteries and the odd rear wheel bearing, the Jazz has been completely reliable.
The car has one issue: reverse gear on the CVT gearbox takes around 15 seconds or so to engage when the car is started on cold mornings. Once the car has warmed up a bit, the gearbox works fine. When we last had the CVT serviced, we asked the Honda dealer about it. Their reply is that the box is probably good for another 100,000km or so before it becomes a major problem. At that stage, we'll probably send it to the wreckers and get another brand new Jazz to replace it.
For the first 12 years, we had the Jazz serviced exclusively at Honda dealers. However, given the car's age, I'm now attending to minor services myself (mainly oil changes). That said, the next time the CVT is due to be serviced, it will be going straight back to the dealer.
I've driven manual Jazzes with over 300,000km on the clock and I am convinced that a manual Jazz is one of the best cars to buy if you want cheap transport and are handy with spanners. Automatic Jazzes ... not so much. But you'll still get 250,000-300,000km out of an automatic Jazz if you get the CVT box serviced every couple of years.
Honda service looking for gold under the hood – If Honda service centre in Prahran gets hold of your car they will be sure to suggest many expensive repairs and when you say you can't afford them they will pull the old scare tactic of roadworthiness. They wanted $500 to replace a rubber that insulates the engine vibration from the car body. When I asked to be shown the problem they said they… Read more
couldn't, it was actually just a prediction of what might happen as the car gets older. How can what might happen later make the car unroadworthy now and since when is vibration grounds for unroadworthiness?
The same thing happened with the shock absorbers. For $700 I could have more rubber replaced to prevent them rattling. Then they wanted to replace the platinum-tipped spark plugs for $95 each and for $85 they would also like to replace the wiper blades. I asked if they too were platinum-tipped. They didn't get my sarcasm and just frowned like I was crazy.
I said NO to everything and now am looking around for an alternative place to maintain my car and any REAL issues it presents. My next service is the 200,000 Km @ $1,200. When I mentioned this price seemed high I was told it was my fault for keeping the car so long. I've spent $16,000 on servicing my Honda Jazz every 6 months or 5,000 km since buying it new in 2003. I asked if it was poor engineering that required such frequent servicing. My friend owns a Toyota and spends $152 every 12 months for a service. When I mentioned this to Honda they explained that Toyota Australia subsidised services to keep them so low. I remarked that Toyota was starting to look good in that case. They just stood there staring at me speechless. Oh, what a feeling!

Good little Car – Bought the Honda Jazz VTi 2007 model brand new in Jan 2008 (last of this series). It's been a great little car for the family. Loads of space for 3 kids and 2 adults. The rear seats fold flat, turning the car into a mini-van. I've fitted a 42" Flat Screen TV in its box in the back. Car has had several recalls to do with the Airbags. Since new, we… Read more
have driven over 100,000 Km's. The Tires have been replaced twice. The services at Honda are expensive and what I don't like is the CVT gearbox service where they have to flush it twice with oil. Until you do this the gear changes are very rough. This has been done twice now. The build quality isn't the best. Unfortunately we've had to park this car in the open (not garaged) and now I've noticed that the paint laquer has worn out and has left a lot of white spots all over the hood. I've also changed the front brake pads twice since new.
Can't complain about a car that starts everytime you get in and takes you where you want to go!

SPACE RELIABILITY LOW RUNNING COSTS GREAT FUEL ECONOMY – I’ve had quite a few of these Honda Jazz’ couple in my fleets of daily drivers. I also sell these little Hondas. visibility Plenty of space Comfortable front seats The simplicity & reliability that comes standard with these little Gems! Incredible magic seats that transforms the Jazz into a flat floor space tardis! Plenty of performance particularly if you buy the VTi or VTi-S 1.5L variant Great fuel economy on 91 or E10 94 5.5 to 7.2 L/ 100 kms 1.5L or even better with the smaller economy 1.3L engine.
Overall this is a great reliable car that’s fun to drive, handles well & is able to perform interstate drives with ease & confidence. I highly recommend the Honda Jazz of all generations & models to all people wanting an economical small car that is much better than a Getz, Mazda 2, fiesta or echo & Yaris. I’ve been in the automotive industry since 1984 & have good experience to do with most cars, particularly HONDA
The beast – This car takes an absolute beating. From a person who's had numerous big engine sedans changing to a fuel efficient car I have no regrets. This thing is outright fun to drive. The 5 speed manual gear ratios are perfect and means this thing is super quick off the mark but acceleration is slow above 60km/h but only due to the engine size. It's not… Read more
slow if you thrash it but this car begs you to thrash it. The engine winds up quick, sounds great and the clutch is so forgiving when thrashed its almost like it was designed that way. Steering is great too honda did a perfect job of 1x full steering wheel rotation for a 90 degree corner meaning your hand always finishes on the top of the steering wheel when turning a corner and gearing at the same time. This is a drivers car through and through but it has been victim to the hereditary ailments of this model being bad ignition coils and rear wheel bearings but other than that I love it. Best brakes of any car I've ever had. Huge interior space, it's more spacious inside than most sedans.
Its a compact little Car, Fairly Fuel efficient – Its mainly used for short distance travelling, less than 100 KM a day. Its used a few times a week or more, and has not had any problems with it when it gets serviced once a year or so. I think its a good little car. Show details
PIV gear box – then gear box develops a shudder . to clear the gear box needs to be flushed out with honda gearbox oil any car that has done more then 120k should be suspect if the gear box has not been re built honda is letting its brand and customers down by not doing the right thing and replacing a faulty design Show details
I love this car – My Honda Jazz has stuck with me through thick and thin - across the Nullabor and more. Servicing is always very cheap, as there are never any issues!! Plus good mileage. It doesn't have much oomph, but is that really what you're looking for if you're keen on a Jazz? It does what it needs to do and has been super reliable. Show details
10yrs old and still in pretty good condition – Pros: Very reliable small car. Purchased Honda Jazz GLI year 2007 and up to now, it is very good condition and performance. Very easy to manouver, boot space is excellent compared to other small car brands. Inside space is pretty reasonable. Very fuel efficient. Cons: Due to sun exposure, paint started to fade on roof/top area. Show details
Excellent small car – Bought this car second hand and it was still in excellent condition. I still use this car on everyday and despite its age it still runs well. Its small size makes it easy to duck in and out of traffic. Its engine is runs smoothly making it easy to stop and start at traffic lights. A wonderful city car. Show details
Jazz VTIs Has Been A Very Good Car – Purchased our 2005 VTiS in 2007, with 14k on the clock. Now has 190k and runs as good - if not better than when we got it, no noises, no oil usage, no rattles everything works and gets 6L/100 around town. Years ago we had the dreaded CVT shudder, the Honda dealer was no help, however they sold me the improved CVT fluid, I changed the fluid,… Read more
drain/fill, easy job, shudder gone. That was at approx 50K. Now I change CVT fluid every 30k and have had no issues at all, the CVT has not been apart and works great well as great as the CVT is, it does not give you a neck breaking take off, but so smooth, it's an acquired taste and I can see how some people would not like it but it is very efficient and if you use the 7 speed in manual mode and get the vtec engine working, it is fun. At 170k we had a slight miss in the motor at low acceleration, turned out to be 2 faulty coil packs, bought a full set from Amazon for approximately $100 delivered, easy install, problem fixed. That's been it in 9 years and 176k, apart from normal servicing of course and one set of front pads, I consider this to be a very satisfying ownership experience and would recommend this car to anyone. Don't be put off by the CVT, if you like the way they work. Test the starting clutch with a start under full acceleration, if no shudder it will be fine, and then change the fluid every 30k, or when the shudder starts, magic seats are the best too. Hope this review helps.
June 7th 2017 Update: A great appliance car
Purchased a new 2012 vibe S, over 5 years later and 100K the car has delivered in all areas. During this time only maintenance, a battery last month, 1 set rear pads - so all normal maintenance. Nothing has failed or broken, interior has held up well, servicing costs are ok. It has the conventional 5 speed auto which works well with the 1.5L engine and gets the car moving quickly. Real world economy in traffic and up/down through the hills every day is good, 7L per100. More importantly the car has had no issues, no major expenses and seems to be running better at 100K than when new. Heaps of space inside, magic seats are VERY useful as anyone who has them will know
Only gripe would be the rear suspension, damping and spring rates are not well matched and it's quite firm.
But, all things considered, to get from A to B everyday, economically, reliably and comfortably its great, 4.5 stars really.
Beautiful to drive but unreliable – I bought this car to replace my ageing 1992 Honda civic 2 door hatch back. It was incredible to drive, no more bending down to sit inside, having 5 doors was a plus, as well as the huge cargo area in the back with the seat folded flat. Brilliant engineering by Honda. I have the 1300 manual transmission model, easiest clutch in the world , nicely… Read more
spaced pedals too. The motor pulls like a train with the manual transmission, even with the air conditioning running. I average 4.8 litres per 100kms, worse I have ever had is 6 litre per 100, driving like lunatic. I have had trouble with the transmission which I have learned is an inherited Honda quality issue, where the reverse selector comes adrift and causes the gears to clash together while turning left in second gear. Very expensive to repair $1900 to be precise. Now the transmission has got noisy whining like a old morris minor with 500,000 miles on it, I have now an issue with the steering rack, it is failing due to another quality issue, I have been quoted $1500 for the part by Honda, I really love this car, but have grown disenchanted by the quality issues that I have encountered. The previous owner was fastidious with servicing the car, the book was up to date when i purchased the car. It has only just reached 100,000kms now and I am ready to put it in the dump, it looks like new but is not worth fixing this troublesome vehicle.

bad customer service – I won't buy another Honda in Australia after experience with our Jazz. on 'fixing' the problematic cvt than being honest with their customers. I have estimated their markup of repairing cvts based on the costs of parts and labor, it would be almost 500%. How can you be honest with your customers with this type of profits. Honda's vic state customer relation manager Michael was so rude, that he did not even dare to tell his surname. We really feel sorry for Japanese Honda who could not recruit Honda kind of people to work for them in Australia. So never buy another new Honda in Australia, we are paying Honda prices but not getting Honda services.

Worst car I have ever purchased! – Where do I start? Well I bought my partner a 2003 Honda Jazz Gli 1.3L CVT and at first it was a great car, very economical, comfortable and an all round pleasure to drive... That is until the first of a myriad of issues would arise, the first of which was a flogged out rear wheel bearing after only 20xxxkm's, then came the A/C compressor bearing… Read more
dying at 25xxxkm's and then the infamous CVT shudder showed it's terrible head. Honda replace the starter clutch under warranty and told me they had changed CVT fluids and that it would not be an issue again... Well 3 rear wheel bearing, 2 A/C bearings. 1 A/C compressor, 3 coil packs and 3 CVT starter clutch replacments( $3000 each BTW) later and she has only just cracked over 90,000km's and the CVT has just gone in a big way, it now makes a terrible vibration which could be likened to a small earthquake on take off or when accelerating.
Worst thing is the car was/is for sale so there goes any chance of getting a decent price for the car.
My advice if you own/buying a Honda Jazz with a CVT SELL IT WHILE IT STILL WORKS or DON'T BUY IT. I regret not buying her the manual now. very economical, comfortable and a pleasure to drive, when it is working... CVT is a massive fail and honda should have recalled every single one of them,
Great car, had minor issues with gearbox – This is the first and probably only brand new car I've bought and I've largely been very happy with it. we need to pack much in the boot.
The only mechanical issues we've had with the car is a rebuilt auto gearbox after around 60,000km and despite being careful drivers who regularly keep the tyres inflated to the recommended level, we've gone through a few sets of tyres given the relatively low mileage.
Other than that - great! Folding seats enable you to fit loads of stuff in, given the size of the car. goes through tyres and auto gearbox had to be rebuilt at relatively low mileage.
OK – My mum owns an automatic 2002 Honda Jazz, which I frequently drive to run short errands. with my feet on the pedals. Also, there has been a 'new car' smell since the day my Mum bought the car - brand new from the Honda dealership - and during long trips in the car it gives me a migraine. I think it's from the upholstery in the car. The drive is smooth but I think you would have better control with a manual model. The steering feels a bit tight when going around corners. With the design of the windows, I feel a bit 'boxed in' and often have trouble seeing vehicles in my blind spot. The maintenance on the vehicle is expensive! It costs my Mum about $300-$600 per year on servicing which is done at the Honda dealership where she purhased the car. Overall, a good quality car but I would seriously consider the cost to maintain it when thinking about buying one. Smooth drive, fuel efficient, spacious interior, "new car" smell still lingers, dashboard height, window designs obstruct blind spot,
I hated this car – I purchased this car to replace a Toyota Starlet. I believe I was totally sucked in by the sales people! They carried on like it was a purchase which I would never regret etc etc. I liked the look of it and the demo which I drove seemed really nice so I decided against better judgement to get one. I noticed on the way driving home that the… Read more
steering was not as easy as the demo, and I called the dealership the next day to ask whether I was given a car which didn't have power steering, I was assured I wasn't. To this day I suppose I will never know. I trusted them but to me it was very heavy on the steering compared to my fathers old Civic which was 11 years old and light as a feather. Further the car is very tinny in that if you had a crash i don't know how you would survive. The doors are very light and one small rock hitting the bonnet caused all the paint to chip and rust. I do not think that these cars are very well made at all. They do have a lot of room when you collapse the seat but I would never trust putting a child in one. The car as a whole just doesn't seem strong and safe.
What was also very annoying was when I took it back to the dealership only a year later to try and upgrade and get a trade-in they were not interested in buying the car off me, I ended up going to Ford who I purchased a much better car from and they offered me at least a half decent trade-in on this 'jazzed up piece of junk'.
Oh and I don't know if anyone else experienced this, but on the divers side flooring a hole kept being burnt in the carpet and they kept having to replace it under warranty. When I questioned what was the cause and couldn't they fix the electrical issue once and for all they just wouldn't talk about it. I would NEVER buy a Honda ever again.
Bad experience at dealership, bad trade-in

The negs. were a known transmission problem that I had trouble with getting the dealership to fix. Mentioned at quite a few services and not replaced until I had done some serious internet searching and found out it was know and then put a rocket up them. Luckily I had extended warranty. Also as mentioned by others, bad on bearings. I think all 4 (maybe more?) were replaced and it wasn't a cheap exercise. They shouldn't fail like that. I would get another except for that, the roads I drive are appalling and I need something more robust. Looks, roominess, versatility with back seats down flat, fuel economy. Known transmission problems and wheel bearing replacements. Had to get strong with the dealership to get things fixed.

I was going to buy a Honda Jazz when i first saw them advertised about 5 years ago-but they were more expensive then (2003) than they were when I bought this one at the end of 2007. I think Honda has made them available at a more competitive price by building them in Thailand. This hasn't made any difference to the quality and the car is the nest I have ever owned.
