With that confirmation came a sense of relief and excitement.… Read more

We were confirmed that all outstanding tasks would be completed by then, and it felt like we were finally approaching the finish line. We were ready—mentally, emotionally, and logistically—for the final stretch.

Naturally, we asked the next big question: “When do we get the keys?” The construction supervisor assured us that if any issues were found during PCI, MJH would need up to 10 business days to resolve them. That seemed fair. We were ready to wait just a little longer.

But the day of the PCI brought more than just a walk-through—it brought surprises.

The staircase stood unfinished, nails protruding from unpainted timber. The ground floor bathroom was missing its heat/light/fan unit. A section of balcony tiles needed rework. These weren’t minor touch-ups—they were glaring oversights.

Still, we tried to stay optimistic. After a brief overview of guidelines, we asked again about the keys handover. What followed was a robotic repetition—three times, verbatim:

“MJH will do keys handover once the money is in the MJH bank account and confirmation from construction coordinator that money is in the MJH bank account. After that, construction coordinator needs to call construction supervisor for keys handover. Do you get it?”

While we understand the importance of this process, the message could have been communicated in a more courteous and professional manner. The repetition felt unnecessary and somewhat dismissive. To add to our frustration, the construction supervisor had promised to send a digital copy of the PCI issues. That never happened. Thankfully, we had taken detailed notes ourselves. But the lack of follow-through was disappointing and hinted at a deeper issue: a lack of accountability.

Then came the twist.

On the 6th business day after PCI, we received a hopeful call from the construction supervisor—“Everything is on track, you might get your keys this Friday.” Our excitement returned. But just two days later, on the 8th day, everything changed.

The construction supervisor informed us that the heat/light/fan unit—re-selected at the recommendation of the MyChoice Design Studio—could not be installed due to a clash with the upper floor joist and interference with the plumbing layout. What’s most concerning and troubling is that it took eight full days to uncover this issue. Eight days. The very unit we were asked to re-select by MyChoice Design Studio—described by MJH as one of the “pricey” options—is now deemed incompatible.

This raises a fundamental question: how and why was this unit (re-selected) recommended in the first place? I have a feeling that the original unit selected during our appointments had already been discontinued—even before our selections were made. If that was the case, why was it still offered to us as an option?

Next, What followed was a frustrating game of ping-pong.

We asked construction supervisor what had gone wrong and when. construction supervisor said, “I simply build according to the plans provided. The construction coordinator or the MyChoice Design Studio team might have more insight.” We then approached the construction coordinator for clarification. The response was, “Have you spoken to the construction supervisor? I’m not across the details—construction supervisor would be the best person to speak with.”

And just like that, we were caught in a loop of deflection.

It was no surprise then, that the ground floor bathroom was missing the unit on PCI day. What made it more puzzling was that every other bathroom and powder room had the unit installed. This wasn’t just an oversight—it felt like something that had been known but not disclosed.

To make matters more complicated, previous re-selections had been managed directly by the MyChoice Design Studio team. However, in this instance, the coordination was handled solely by the construction coordinator, and we were not provided with any contact for MyChoice Design Studio. As a result, we have no visibility into the communication between construction coordinator and MyChoice Design Studio, nor any assurance that the concerns and information we shared with construction coordinator were accurately conveyed. This breakdown in the communication chain has left us feeling that no one seemed willing—or able—to take responsibility.

Next, we expected to be given a re-selection option for the heat/light/fan unit. However, instead of a choice, we received a variation email from the construction coordinator, not from the MyChoice Design Studio, offering a single alternative. The proposed unit is noticeably inferior in terms of capacity, quality, and features compared to the original, yet it is priced the same. This approach feels unfair and lacks transparency.

And that’s the heart of our concern:

Was this issue known prior to the PCI? If so, why were we not informed? Did the problem originate during the construction phase, or was it a design oversight? And if it could have been identified earlier, when should it have been addressed?

We are now genuinely concerned that the issues identified during the PCI, along with those documented in our independent inspection report and shared with CS, may not be addressed thoroughly or correctly. The lack of clear communication and follow-through so far has left us uncertain about the resolution process.

The silence, the delays, the vague responses—they all point to a troubling lack of transparency.

McDonald Jones. Process has been pretty smooth so far. The sales rep Tristan Cavarra was very helpful when we were first getting started before the build. Construction supervisor Wayne Gordon and Project Coordinator Jai Cartwright have been communicating with us regularly which has been great. Workmanship on the site looks really good, however noticed a couple of issues which we are hoping to have resolved before handover.

When they are resolved would happily change review from a 4 star to a 5 star review as the rest of the process has been real easy and there has been great communication, particularly from Wayne and Jai.

Mid construction review – I’m currently mid-construction and can honestly say despite the rocky start of waiting for the land to be registered and back and forth with planning, construction has been the better end of it. We have Wayne as our site supervisor and he’s been the best. He is easy to communicate with, provides us with updates and photos. So, word of advice to anyone building with the Southwestern Sydney area, if you have Bruce as your site supervisor, don’t let anyone take him off your job! Everything he promised was delivered and he was extremely consistent in communication. From discussing minor errors in the construction process, answering our concerns/questions and always ringing us each Friday afternoon with an update, we felt at ease and informed on what stage we were up to as well as the next steps. Any question or concern we had, he always answered with a positive attitude and was happy to help. He was also very accommodating when we requested to have an external site inspection for peace of mind, and he was happy to work with the external company to arrange site access. Any minor problems the inspector picked up, Bruce had already picked up prior and was in the process of getting it fixed anyway, so we decided there was no point doing anymore inspections, Bruce was already on top of it, plus identifying some other issues our inspector hadn’t seen. Whenever we wanted site access, he was always happy to organise this for us, and given we lived far from the site, sometimes this would end up being on the later side of the afternoon or extremely early mornings, and he was still more than happy to accommodate our requests. Throughout the whole build and the lead up to PCI, it felt as though Bruce had gone through the house as if it were his own, and picked out any issues that he would be unhappy with if he was the client, so when it came to PCI we were so happy with the finished product and we only found a few minor superficial issues which were rectified promptly. We have had family who have built previously with other builders, and each one who has seen our new home has complimented the integrity and quality of the build, we truly believe that this is massively to do with Bruce overseeing our job. No stone was left unturned, his thoroughness and knowledge put us at ease pretty much immediately and as an additional bonus, he was pleasant and easy to speak to throughout the whole process.

Thank you again Bruce, we are so appreciative of everything you have done. If we build again we will be reaching out!
