Another great second build with Mcdonald Jones Homes – As we approach the handover (mid-September 2019) of our second home build with McDonald Jones Homes, we would like to express in writing our appreciation to the entire team at MJH for another finely crafted home built to our exact specifications at Beechwood, NSW 2446. After the great experience of our first build (and the meticulous warranty… Read more · 3
follow-ups by Graeme Melville) with MJH it was a no brainer to approach MJH again to tender for our second build on a significantly larger lot (1 acre). Once again Rick Harrison has been outstanding in his assistance with the design selection, planning, siting on our lot and the costing of the build. The process then flowed effortlessly into the colour and electrical selections, very capably handled by Kimberley Power and Ryan Walker respectively. Both were knowledgeable, efficient and proactive with ideas and suggestions. Karyn Keefe from the Port Macquarie office then took over the coordination and legal paperwork and this was progressed with minimal fuss and again with great detail and efficiency. Once construction began, we have been blessed once again with a team of very capable and meticulous trades here in Port Macquarie. Special mention must go to Damian (slab), Brock (brickie), Snow (gyprocker), Ron (painter) and Geoff (tiler). All have been detailed, thorough and took great care and pride in achieving a perfect finish. And all supervised by our very knowledgeable and totally accessible supervisor James Williams who kept us constantly updated and informed of milestones achieved and matters requiring our input. We really could not ask for a better build process todate. Gerald & Josephine.

The problem with McDonald Jones is staff including site supervisors and area managers are not builders and have little clue to what they are looking for. 1. Balcony overflow This was missed.. okay no real problem.. here is the issue… the area manager watched the trade install an overflow without water proofing. I had to point out the water… Read more
proofing requirements in AS4654.2 along with diagrams on how to do this before McDonald Jones would return.. really? A non builder has to bring this to your attention
2. Leaking window they do not know how to fix or who to contact to have it fixed
3. Driveway
My driveway has a gradient of approximately 2:14 or around 14 degrees. AS4586&4663 requires the driveway to have a minimum P5 slip rating.
First of all I am offered a non complying driveway by the colour consultant at the colour studio.
The coloured sealer has been put on over 7 times by the builder…around 6 times by the one contractor. After a recent fall I contacted the manufacture of the sealer and found out this product could not be used on gradients over 1:14.
I was offered a “good Will” gesture by way of an alternative product. I was given approximately 4 hours to make my decision. Concerned the builder was hiding something more, I looked into this product and the data sheet said only apply to flat surfaces. Concerned again I reached out to the sales rep by email.. McDonald Jones intercepted this email and said under no circumstances can you talk to the client. After direct discussions with the sales Rep. it turns out Yes you guessed it.. the product has not been tested on driveways with gradient.
Honestly I could not make this stuff up. I am now stuck with a driveway I can’t walk on because it is too slippery and a garage I cannot use if it is wet. The builder has basically cut off all communication and left me with this complete mess.
Please please please do not use these guys. They are not builders and they have no idea what they are doing. The worse part is? They just shut off all communication with the client when they are wrong and basically say "make me otherwise I will not do a thing".
And you know what adds "salt into your wound?" They say (which I am going to upload over the weekend) yes we agree there is a defect and I need to contact my insurance. Instead of helping a client immediately they make this type of representation.
UPDATE: I was asked to take this review down and promised they would redo my driveway. Well they did but not without defects. A plant box I never asked for.. hits to the crossover and leaving my front yard in a mess.
Yes yes yes we will fix it the construction director says… we will call you next week. Nothing. This has been going on for over 12 months now. What pushed me over the edge was when the construction director said "I will call you next week" knowing perfecting well he was on annual leave that week.
4. They will go to extreme lengths just to get out of a defect.
To remove the concrete and put a plant box in is around $250. They spend around $2,000 on a building inspection report which said the concrete would fade eventually. However the report was false and misleading as it did not take into account the concrete sealer.
It’s the same old story. Defects and they run to high heaven and cut off all communication. Its the same attitude "make me or we will do nothing"
Please please please .. This is the true McDonald Jones. Take your money and when it comes to defective work they run to the hills
Avoid McDonald Jones – 4 Site Supervisors and 12 MONTHS after the block being dug our simple, one storey house is still not in any liveable condition, and likely won’t be any time soon. door started the same week as us, and they were in for Christmas 7 months ago, so I would highly recommend them. Meanwhile our cabinetry is wrong and falling apart, tiles were wrong, bench is hacked up, bath tap isn’t long enough to get the water to the bath, bricks are falling off the house, power points in the wrong place, windows left open multiple nights flooding the brand new carpet, and there’s no way to open the cupboards above our range hood. And no communication as to when this might be rectified and so far 3 possible PCI dates are been and gone.

layers. The first half good, the second half crooked. The roof has missing flashing and on the windows. Tilling still not finished plus more. Had to pull down gyprock as wall were crooked. Now end of January 2025 and still houses are not finished. The rendering was done on the bad bricking house, the bottom of house is crocked so when footpath is cemented it looks bad. The brickwork on the other house has to be stained as bad batch of bricks. Been waiting from last year still not done. Tiles inside is not good still waiting to be fixed and finished. Microwave oven cupboard has a hole in back and told this is how it is done. I have informed them one house has no hole so fix the other house. They say still waiting for the kitchen mob to fix. NBN one house no string in it so they won't connect until fixed. This is costing us interest and lost revenue of $1,500 per week rent. I have retired and have no income as this is my pension. I have to draw down on the loan to live. They say the house will do PCI on 31st January but house will not be ready then as they will still have problems to fix. You cannot put tenants in and say let repairers in to fix things. Mc Donald Jones get your act together. One year over contract and still not finished. $35 a day does not cover interest and no income from my investment. I have 2 pages of things that still need doing before PC and is nearly of January 2025. They tell they owe me $8,000 per house for being late, but it has cost me in interest and lost income way more than that. We are now on our 5th site supervisor and countless tilers trying to fix up previous work done. Still inside house painting needs fixing. Faulty bricks from still not done/staining, how long will stain last? May 2025 they gave us the keys, only 1 front door key, what happen to the other one. No photos to prove the work has been done as we were overseas when handover happened. They did pay the $35 per day for the excess time for the late hand over, still did not cover interest paid. When tenants moved in there was a leak and it wet the new carpet and a large hole in wall in toilet was made to repair it. It has been over 3 months and hole in wall still not fixed and no photos to show repairs have been completed. Now done after 3 months but waiting for the wall to be painted. The wall still not painted another month later. McDonald Jones wants the 13 week repair list to sent, we have tenants in house will do for 3 month inspection. We live a 10hr drive from houses to find some jobs still not completed and found more things that need repairs. Still no repairs done and it is end of September. My son build with McDonald Jones and his house given to him 5 months before us and he is still waiting on repairs for 9 months and counting. Inside of his house has to be repainted. Someone sanded of the ceiling and walls and they did a bad job. It is September 2025, so for it to be fixed and the painting to be done. He has been in house now 9 months and still waiting for painting and other repairs. We have made calls to site manager [Name Removed] and he does not return calls after building had problems with water leakage. McDonald Jones do not like to finish the mistakes that are made in their builds and they hope you just stop asking and don't follow through. We received a gift to say thank you, but we built 2 houses and only gave us 1 gift for both houses. We were given 2 mini Webber's for all the problems but not larger enough for people living in a 5 bedroom house.
Follow-up · They had access to do 12 week repairs. I had asked for photos to see that repairs were done. But still no photos or communication from McDonald Jones. The builds are rentals so they don't know what was done as they were at work. They never gave the second original key, no photos to see if rusting on roof if fixed. Yes the staining on bricks was done and looks good.

patience, and genuine care made a world of difference. Rather than leaving us to figure things out on our own, she really took the time to understand our vision and helped us make confident, informed decisions.
She brought clarity to what could have been an overwhelming process and made it enjoyable and exciting. We truly felt supported every step of the way.
Thank you, Danielle, for your incredible service – we’re so grateful!

Very pleasing so far – During my pre construction phase, the team at MJH out at the display village in Thrumster, Kathleen Ezard, Kerri Charnock & Kelli Wiggins were outstanding, nothing was ever too much of a problem for them. Disappointing experience – The only positive part of our building journey was the sales team in the Port Macquarie display home, they were lovely and knowledgeable. This is where the positivity ends. progress as we were nearing tender expiration I was told they had requested further information from MJH who had left it a week before they responded- this was the first of a never ending number of delays.
Every single stage of our build has been frustratingly slow, with no particular reason given aside from lack of trades, however all other builds surrounding us have progressed just fine (multiple different builders). I understand McDonald jones has more builds on at any one time than other builders, however this shouldn’t make a difference as the ratio of trades to builds should be higher.
After finally receiving our keys 68 days over contract and being in the house for barely 2 weeks the absolute final straw for us was the bath not draining properly and after the plug being pulled the entire contents of the bath went down the drain then up through the wastewater grate in the bathroom thus flooding a hallway and 2 bedrooms, after calling the emergency number and being contacted by the MJH contact I was told that someone would be in contact, the plumber was quite quick to contact us I will give them that, however still not able to come and rectify the issue straightaway, this happened on Saturday evening, it is now Monday and after the initial phone call I’ve heard nothing
I was also told someone would contact me about getting the carpet dried out- so far 2 days later nothing. So far the aftercare is disappointing, especially as I would class a plumbing issue like this that leads to flooding part of the house an emergency.
I genuinely hope that MJH finally takes notice of the negative reviews particularly in the Port Macquarie area and make the necessary changes to do better by their paying customers, customers who place their trust into MJH. Additionally the team working for them who seem to be taking on more work than manageable. Every attempt should be made to rectify any issues or at the absolute least be consistent and honest with updates to provide a positive experience for customers paying a large sum of money for their homes!
This whole experience should have been exciting, however it has been anything but.

months. Many calls to the site supervisor and emails to the admin office over the period pretty much avoided any response or assurance. The excuses given, such as bad weather and a lack of trades, are unacceptable and seem to be the opposite of what has been committed during the sales phase.

them a staggering ten months just to lay the slab. Their pace has been excruciatingly slow, and their responsiveness is virtually non-existent. Emails go unanswered, phone calls are ignored, and any attempt to get an update on the progress is met with silence. This lack of communication and efficiency has placed an immense financial burden on our family. It's been nearly 1.5 years since our land was settled, and the house is still not even halfway done. We are caught in a dire situation, paying both rent and a mortgage simultaneously, which is causing severe stress and frustration. McDonald Jones Construction has not only failed to deliver on their promises but has also shown a blatant disregard for the impact their incompetence has on their clients. Their delays and lack of transparency have played with our lives, leaving us in a constant state of anxiety and financial strain. To anyone considering McDonald Jones Construction, I strongly advise against it. Save yourself the trouble and money. Their poor management and unprofessionalism are not worth the risk. They have turned what should have been an exciting journey into a prolonged ordeal. We feel trapped and regretful for ever choosing them as our builders.

our build is taking so long, we are always getting told everything is getting taken care of and promises are getting made, but unfortunately they are just empty promises and our house is still not finished after about 450 business days! Our land was registered and the invoice have always been paid on time. This is the 3rd house we have built and we have never experienced anything like it. We are building a standard 4 bedroom house.
On top the quality has been poor. Our brickwork is bowed and our bathroom tiles are chipped. We still don’t have a finish date in writing and I’m not able to get anyone from MDJ to contact me.

Why it takes too long? mJH accepted a lot of job in this area but they are struggling!!! MJH can’t built double story home within the time frame .. I am terribly upset because my place here is in stage 6 then when I go around the area few days ago I found out that they are building 2 story house as well at stage 8 (same area) and almost the construction is ahead of my house . HOWTHAT HAPPENED? For sure i am ahead of 6 months in this area when it comes to council approval but hooraayyy this 2 storyhouse is ahead of building to my house..16 pallet of bricks waiting for trades to installed but where they are? Are they doing purposely to delay the construction of my house.. If you will phone the supervisor definitely so many excuses. If you will ask the coordinator not aware because she is based in NEW CASTLE.. if you will call the MJH here at Port Macquarie the call will go somewhere New castle and they will try to contact the office here and telling to you “ they will call you back in few minutes.. What is that? But actually no one will call you from MJH.. So much pressure in our hand and stress and if I could go back the time for sure I can avoided and I can make a better decision to choose another builder.. BIGGEST mistake in our life!!!!!!

Worst Building Experience Ever! – We have built several homes and this build with McDonald Jones Homes Mid North Coast NSW has been the worst experience from start of build onwards. lock up stage after 16 months and little and poor communication that always ends in a conversation of ‘next week we will start’, or ‘next week we hope to have it fixed’, or ‘next week the materials will arrive’, but next weeks turns to weeks and months. The worst part is the errors are not simple and could have easily been avoided. How can a company that continuously tells its customers and advertises building quality homes get it so wrong?
Too many issues to mention but here are just a few: concrete slab laid whilst 3 days of torrential rain occurred that was well reported in all weather reports prior and other concreters cancelled their jobs, windows and stacker doors delivered before the frame was delivered and erected leaving the reveals exposed to weather for well over 6 months with some of them in direct contact with the sodden ground, the frame took many months to be erected which some of it has been damaged but still erected, some of the windows and doors which we paid to be double glazed due to fire ratings were not double glazed and need replacing, the protective plastic on the windows and doors as they sat in the weather for so long has been baked on so this glass needs to be replaced, some window frames are damaged and need to be replaced, brick work laid poorly with some areas not plumb or level, expansion joints not in the right place, some brick piers bowing, inside bricks mortar not scraped so big chunks of mortar that can cause moisture issues later down the track, cavities full of mortar some areas to the level of the slab and blocking weeper holes so water/moisture can't escape (cleaning of these cavities is usually done as the bricklayer goes each day but not in my build), bricks for the second floor above stacker doors with gaps between mortar and not laid in a brick pattern which means it needs fixing to ensure integrity, so many chipped bricks have been laid after paying for new bricks the build looks terrible, sarking is damaged and requires replacing and has compromised the moisture barrier. Even though 7 months earlier they had agreed to replace all the window and door reveals they went ahead and fitted the stacker doors and windows that had rotted reveals and mould on them and now 10 months later they are pulling them out along with bricks to put on new reveals and will also have to be bricked up again. McDonald Jones talked about using silicone to put the flashing back in which is not to Relevant Australian Standards. I have had to get an independent Building Inspector’s report due to so many issues and poor practices and am still waiting for how they intend to fix my house and on top of that when they plan to finish the build.
The undue stress and strain this has had on my wife and I cannot be stressed enough as well as the financial stress which should not be endured by anyone.
The only thing living in our shell of a ‘house’ that looks like something out of a ghost town, is birds, rats and mice and green mould on some of the bricks. It’s so embarrassing when neighbours comment on the ‘chaotic’ and rubbish laden state of the build site and the way the house just sits there with no work being done. This does not only affect us which is horrendous enough, but neighbours are impacted too which is not how you want to start in your new community.

build timeframe in Port Macquarie! We are nearly reached the end of the contract but not even the external completed. Unfortunately, we are not even halfway through our build. We have waited for 3 months for slab and 3 months for frames. This drained our patience thin and expected some effort to catch up on the lost time but instead it is going in a snail’s space. Trades are promised to be onsite and don't show for weeks. No one has been able to tell me our completion and handover date even though we signed a contract with a 230 day build time. We were told things will change but unfortunately, things haven't changed, and things haven't gotten any better. Interestingly it is getting even slower since we complained and demanded performance of the contract. They are selling new contracts in the promise that there are no more delays, but there are huge delays of every steps.
Higher management is uncontactable and won’t provide solutions or answers to the issues, employees and trades are unmotivated. We have a new SS who is trying to do his best, but the problems lie with higher management and their poor organisational skills. We are extremely disappointed with the whole process (7 months of pre-contruction + 11 months construction and no end to it!). We lost confidence in McDonald Jones as a builder. (We are "building" a modified Panorama 39 two story home in Port Macquarie). The extra financial pressure and stress we are now facing could and should have been avoided if we made a better decision and choose another builder. and communication during this process is appalling. We have been told by numerous people in managerial roles on multiple occasions that we would receive regular weekly contact from someone. I’m not sure how long MJH thinks a week is, but we have gone 2, 3, even 4 weeks without any contact before we finally get frustrated and make contact ourselves. We have sat back and watch other homes get built around us and progress faster than ours and when we ask the question why, all we would get was that ‘it’s politics’. No one has been able to tell me our completion date even though we signed a contract with a 200 day build time. When I personally sat down and calculated that time frame and asked would we finish on time the answer from more than one person was that you won’t make that completion date and that you will not even come close. If MJH can’t build within their contract build timeframe, don’t put it into a contract. We budgeted for this build time and now we don’t know when we will be finished. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. The extra financial and emotional stress this puts on customers is something I don’t think MJH even cares about. Yes, you may be offered liquidated damages in your contract, but the meagre amount offered is an insult. It does not come close to the extra financial burden and expenses that we are now facing because MJH can’t build within their timeframe. I did not ask for our home to built within 200 days, that is what they stated. You get dripped fed information and told things will happen within a certain timeframe or things will be delivered in the next week or so and those timeframes come and go and nothing. It is embarrassing when friends and family ask how our build is going and we have to tell them that not much is happening, we hope things start to move soon. Had we chosen another builder we believe we would be close to, if not in our home by now. I am sad to say I would not recommend to anyone to build with McDonald Jones. We are starting to lose faith and wonder if the house will ever be finished. We just want our house built! Update: Nothing has changed and things haven't gotten any better. No-one can tell us where we are at with the build, why products haven't been delivered when we have been given dates for delivery. It's disheartening to think that we should have been in our home by now according to MJH build time, but unfortunately we are not even half way through our build. If you are given a build time frame, double it! The worksite itself is a disgrace. It is dirty, empty chip packets just thrown around, cigarette butts on the floor, drink cans just left and the list goes on. I find this extremely disrespectful and it shows no pride in any work that is carried out. We are extremely disappointed with the whole process. Building a new home is meant to be an exciting time, but this has been any thing but. We have lost faith with the whole process and don't believe our house will be finished any time soon.

Blessed with this Amazing Team! – No words could explain how much my wife and I appreciate all the MJH Port Macquarie Team involved during the pre-construction phase to build our very first own home. constant rain and floodings happened. As a result, we had very limited time for the build to be approved (from the Council and CDC) for us to keep our original contract price. In short, we have a very tight schedule in order for us to meet our set budget. Inflation and building materials price increase soared as well. Furthermore, my wife just told me we are having our third child. My anxiety and stress levels were at its peak.
However, we have been blessed to work with Jedda (Project Coordinator), who was very reassuring and kept us updated with any progress. She guided us of what necessary documents and requirements we needed. And, even if we don’t meet the contract deadline, we always felt at ease with her. We haven’t met her personally but you’ll know how knowledgeable she is and how hard she must have worked to ensure we can get the construction started. This was proven when she surprised us that our build has been approved exactly on the due date of our contract! In view of that, we are extremely grateful!
Moreover, we would also like to thank MyChoice Design Studio Consultants, Courtney and Emily who were very accommodating and understanding. They knew what design we are aiming for and gave us options that can fit our set budget. We always felt welcomed and cared for during our appointments.
Would highly recommend MJHPM! Looking forward to building our home!
