Fantastic vacuum cleaner – I highly recommend the Miele Vacuum cleaners, and we are so impressed with the guys at Betta Electricals Virginia QLD, they are a great bunch of guys and so helpful. We have brought so many of our electrical goods from them. Before we brought the Miele, we unfortunately had brought a Dyson for just under the $1,000 (not from Betta Electricals)… Read more

and what a rotten machine that was, its suction was pathetic and even our cheap $45 machine did a better job. Two weeks after we brought it, Dyson said to send it back which we did and in its box. They then sent it back saying that there was nothing wrong with it, so we sold it cheap and brought the Miele Vacuum S8310 Classic Family Caretaker Diamond Grey for a quarter of the price and even at half suction it just about sucked the wood off the floor and from the power of the suction, we felt that our carpets would be clean. I haven't felt that amount of suction since we had a commercial vacuum cleaner, and you can vary the amount of suction to suit the flooring.. The only complaint that I have on my now old Miele is that today after 6 years the switch went, but we have been so happy with it that we just went and got another one from Betta Electricals.

Would NEVER buy any other brand!! – I have oak floors and carpeting. The Miele S8310 I bought in 2013 is still going strong. Never any trouble with it. Love the retractable cord, LOVE the adjustable suction. The bags are a bit pricey and I use a considerable amount because of my dog's hair shedding. The vacuum misses nothing! Picks up dog hair, dust, etc. with ease. Convenient in vac storage of tools, cord and fittings. Show details ·  1

It's a monster! – I've owned a few vacuum cleaners over the years, most of them relatively cheap and nasty. The cheap and nasty ones are fine for a couple of months then they'd loose suction and ultimately fail. I got sick of buying them and throwing them away so a few years back I decided to take the plunge and spend a reasonable amount of money on a replacement… Read more ·  1

that I hope to get the job done for years. I researched and considered my decision thoroughly and while temped by the trendy bag-less Dyson, I just wasn't quite sold on them after using them on several occasions. Don'd get me wrong, they're ok but when it comes down to suction for the money they cost, I just didn't think they were all that.

So I bought this baby, and 5 years down the line I could not be happier that I did. The main selling point is the suction of the thing, it was then and still is now incredible. At full power it just about sticks itself to carpet and can take some effort to move. It's lost none of it's power either and has not missed a beat. I suppose the only negative against it would be the fact that it requires replacement bags. I don't really find it an issue, they hold a lot and they are relatively cheap.

In short, it's a vacuum, it seriously sucks in the best possible way and continues to do so over a fair period of time and shows no sign of letting up any time soon. I hope this to be my vacuum for life but if I found myself in need of a new one, I would absolutely buy another Miele.

Disappointing – I have had this vacuum cleaner for nearly 2 years and I've had the turbo head stop working and replaced. Now the replacement foot has also stopped working. And the regular foot is soooo hard to push because the roller won't turn freely. It has great suction however trying to vacuum with the regular foot is like trying to push water up hill with a stick. Disappointing. Especially as i bought the top of the range.  Show details

The Best Vacuum I ever used!! – I have tried so many different vacuums as I was working as a house helper (I used vacuums that the families own at their home) for 4 years and worked for approx 50 different houses. I found this vacuum is the best! Miele brand makes high-quality appliances, and this vacuum does an excellent job. Also, the vacuum bag has a big capacity, so it… Read more

I can't live without it – I have 2 vacuum cleaners. Miele is one of them. I love it. There is a fashion on beg less vacuum cleaners, but no one talks about, how they empty them after work. In this meter Miele is great! Begs are expensive but no dust goes out during replacing begs. Suction is very strong, the same all the time. Even with full bag works excellent.  Show details

Best Vaccum we have owned – Over last 25 years we have the bad and the good plus ugly of course in vaccum cleaners so we can now say we have the BEST. Its powerful and easy to use. dyson died after a few years but based on other reviews Mieles leaves dyson in their collective dust plus will last longer . Ours is 4+ years and still going strong.

Most reliable vacuum cleaner – I have two vacuum cleaners, Miele as well as a Dyson. The Miele is my "workhorse" which I much prefer. When I accidentally sucked up some moisture and the bag burst within the Miele, I was able to clean out the machine and it still works perfectly. The Dyson cannot be used for fine powder whereas the Miele handles it well.  Show details

Best vacuum cleaner to date I have used – Ideal if you have dust allergies. Multiple settings in noise and strength. Sucks up everything. Uses bags so all dust is contained at all times!!!!! Compact and durable to date. Mid range cost but excellent performance. No need to by more expensive model.

Great suction but hard to vacuum carpets – This model vacuum cleaner is great for hard floors but is difficult to manoeuvre on carpets. I find I am constantly bending and putting my weight behind it, because the head doesn't glide and it hits the furniture and walls. I wouldn't recommend for the elderly or people with back complaints

Better than dyson by far – I compared this to dyson and it far outdoes dyson. Great vacuum cleaner. The whole thing has been designed well, from the way the tube clicks into the side for tidy storage to the incleadible suction of the power head. Expensive but worth it. Love it, highly reccomended. Only neg is the cost of bags.

Great All Rounder – I am very happy with my new Miele vacuum. I have mostly carpet in my house and so far the suction is wonderful. My previous machine a Dyson cat/dog vacuum was not quite 7 years old, but had lost its suction power a long time ago. I hope that in the same time frame that my new Miele will out perform the Dyson. It is a lot quieter too than my previous machine. Will be purchasing another one shortly for my daughter's house.

Good investment for deep cleaning around the house! – Have had the Miele for about 2.5 years now. After doing much research with bagged and bag-less vacuums, we decided to go with the miele bag-less vacuum even though there will be on-going costs. use 2 bags per year.

Quite happy with the purchase. It has amazing suction power and the ‘auto-wrap’ cord feature always helps after vacuuming. It also has sort of a ‘rubber band’ around the vacuum which prevents knocks into walls etc.

The only con is, it’s heavy to lug around. Perhaps for convenience, we may look into purchasing an everyday cordless vacuum and using the miele for those ‘deep cleaning’ vacuum days around the house.

Powerful vacuum – Heard about the great reviews from many sources so it was an easy choice. The suction power of this vacuum cleaner is tremendous. You can select different power settings because it can be difficult to move on carpet if the power is set too high. But even at lower settings, it will leave your carpets and tiles spotless. I am very pleased with this purchase.

We don't know why but it has never suffered a blockage.. and we've sucked up some chunky stuff.

The filtration spec reckons 99.9% of fine dust is filtered out but note you will need to buy the HEPA filter separately (check what's in the box) - which isn't an issue as the Vac is not expensive - not for what you get may I suggest.

Highly recommended.

The reviews are not lies!! – I decided on this vacuum cleaner after reading all the wonderful reviews. I am shocked. I owned a cheap 250 dollar hoover before this one. What a waste of money it was. I love my new Meile!! My carpet had white fluff which annoyed me and i had to pick them off by hand because the my hoover wasn't. Meile picked up every single white fluff and my carpet looks brand new.

Made the carpets look brand new again – I previously had a cheap-brand bagless vacuum cleaner and noticed how little it sucked up from my wool carpet. had heard they were the best on the market. However the salesman basically said Dyson have a really good marketing department and that they are not the best on the market - not unless you go for the top-end model and even then it may not match other high-end vacuum cleaners.

So I was sold on the Miele S8310 given I don't have any cats or dogs (so didn't need the turbo brush). I got home and tested it out and wow, my carpets look brand new! All of the dark marks in the walkways have gone (assuming it was built-up dirt particles) and for a moment there I thought the vacuum was going to rip up the carpet and underlay - it is so powerful. I was surprised at how quiet the vacuum is especially given its suction power.

Highly recommend this product.

me to this particular vacuum cleaner (which I didn't buy from Godfreys!) - don't buy bagless as the dust has got to go somewhere and so many of the bagless have motor burn out because of this, and secondly, buy one with a good motor, the rest is irrelevant!

So, armed with this information, I went hunting. Researched and researched then hit the store. A $500 budget was set and I managed to come home with more than $100 change, so I am in the good books today :)

At this stage, I am impressed with everything about it. To it's crazy strong suction (with the ability to vary), to its quietness, to how easy it is to move around. I am so used to pulling off the head to do along edges but didn't have to do that today. The cord is long enough that I only had to move the plug once in a 20sq house. And that vacuum cleaner smell? It doesn't have one! It does blow out a lot of air from the top of the machine, but it smells fresh. I am confident that dust isn't blowing back into my home, which is super important to me as I am asthmatic.

I can't think of anything I don't like at this stage. I know I am in the honeymoon stage, so this may change, but so far so good!

8 July 2014 Update

So, I've had this vacuum for a few months now and my review remains the same. It's a fantastic machine.

I use it on rugs, floor boards and tiles with ease. We have a cat and there is no more fur stuck to the rugs - it's like she's not even here! I've not had to change a bag or filter yet, and with the amount of mess in my house (I live with 2 tradies, a cat and a child - plus we are renovating!), I thought I'd have changed it at least once by now.

Honestly, I don't have much more to add - it's just a fantastic machine and I am so happy with my purchase. Great price, quiet, amazing suction, dustless.

Absolute beast !!! – Just to qualify this review we have been using a Dyson DC47 for the last 2 years on a combination of 3 rooms of hard wearing loop pile and living areas and wet areas tiled. Dyson so decided to lash out. I did a little homework and discovered that this appliance had some pretty good reviews both online and rated well in choice magazines vacum round up.

So i went in store and let the salesman give me the speel i tried out a number of devices in store on a thoroughly used walkway where the carpet was basically crushed. Anyways it was the S8's turn, first impressions were wow this thing has got some suction it was pulling in fluff from 10-15cm away so I ask if i can try the turbo head on it. The sales guy took some convincing but i reminded him i was about to drop 500 large here i want to know. Turbo head S8 switched to high power and there were people in store looking for the freeking 747 that was fast running out of runway and in full thrust reverse.

Seriously this thing sounds like a jet but i tell you what that crushed carpet in the walkway stood straight back up after i ran the S8 and turbo head over in the words of the sales man "I have never seen a vacum do that here ever". I was sold, i told sales man i'll take one with a turbo head and a pack of bags for $500 please he agreed i thought i was being a little cheeky asking for an new in box turbo head as well but he said "Dude i need that as a demo for the next customer".

So i just finished vacuming the house in a third of the time the turbo head smashed our carpets and took no arguments from all of my wifes long hair on the bedroom carpet tiled area left me giggling watching particles come running from half a meter away to jump aboard.

All i will say is go for it this machine is a beast ! Long handle for tall people, Raw Power, Extensive Accessories, Filters Interchangeable with more expensive models Be very very careful around curtains and running over drains in wet areas !

S8310 - Nice vacuum body but flawed SBD 285-3 floor head design – This vac has a nice barrel that is easy to drag along. The noise level is good and has decent suction. noise problem. The noise appears to be caused by the synthetic brush head. But I am still puzzled why in the reverse direction only.

I have brought the brush back to the store where it was bought and all sbd285-3 that was in the store there also have the issue. Even the store guys agreed with me of the noise and how irritating it is. We couldn't believe a miele product could be like this. Appears to be a design flaw.

Contacting miele I have been told miele are not aware of this issue.

For those out there looking to buy miele with SBD 285-3 floor head, keep your ears out for this irritating problem on the floor head before making a purchase. Quiet, barrel glides along easily. Flawed design SBD 285-3 floor head, exhaust air comes out top which can get hot and in your face.

Miele S8310 (2013) Classic Family Caretaker – (Note: I have currently owned this for 4 months at time of writing and do not use the cleaner heavily as I only have to vacuum a 2 bedroom unit) All my life my family has had reversed sock style bagged vacuums, these needed to be emptied before putting them back in. Mostly Nationals and Sanyos since the models we had were powerful and lasted… Read more ·  3

for ages and most of the time were still working after 10 years. However their ability to stop dust coming back out the motor exhaust or allergens wasn't great so after moving I decided to get a new vacuum cleaner and keep the old Sanyo for vacuuming the car, garage and outdoor areas. I also had stayed at a friends house who had an older Miele Cat and Dog S5 series which despite it's well used state I was impressed with.

After much thought, a look at the Choice review of medium priced vacuums, and contemplation I had narrowed down my choice to three vacuums in my price range and what was available in the local stores, the Miele S8310, Dyson DC29 and the Vax Zen Powerhead. I did kind of want a bagless because the technology seemed innovative and I liked the idea of not having to buy bags or wash sock filters. After researching on the internet and then going into my local Good Guys store to try them I settled on the Miele ($374 in early 2013). Here is what I found about each and the reasoning behind my choice.

1. Dyson's quality has dropped since they stopped manufacturing in the UK, though their prices haven't, the DC29 looked and felt much cheaper than my brother's older more expensive Dyson model made in the UK. You still have to wash the filters, which I had to do with my old Sanyo anyway so not entirely mess free, and eventually you will have to replace these "lifetime" filters because washing them will eventually wear them out. The casing design is overly complicated on the outside thus making the unit hard to wipe down as it's all full of odd angles and corners.

2. The Vax Zen Powerhead was cheaper than the Dyson, had a bit more motor power and was simpler in design and a bit more conventional. I liked the way the canister could be removed and cleaned over the Dyson. The problem was that the motor pre filter like the dyson had to be washed regularly and the hepa filter had to be replaced. The Vax Hepa filter was not as easy to find from suppliers as the Dyson or the ones from Miele.

3. On the two bagless cyclone vacs a few shortcomings became apparent.

- There is no suction control apart from one of those simple opening valves, you can't lower the power of the motor as the cyclone effect cannot work properly.

- Motor power is no indication of suction power, Cyclone vacs have an "air wattage" rating of power. I was rather dissapointed with the suction power of these two models.

- Capacity is very small on these bagless vacs, you have to empty them very frequently or they lose effectiveness quite fast. That's why LG bagless models have this little arm to compress the contents.

- Their design seems to focus on the flashy rather than substance to hide cheaper manufacturing quality and simply to look futuristic and modern.

- They are fairly noisy considering their suction power.

4. The Miele S8310 seemed to deal with these shortcomings.

- There is an electronic suction control, with lit little icons plus the traditional sliding valve style control on the handle. You could adjust motor power from 300W up to 2200W in 6 preset stages.

- At 2200w it was the most powerful motor and the suction was direct not being a cyclone style bagless, trying them instore proved that the Miele had the best suction hands down.

- Capacity on the bags was quite good and the bag indicator actually seems to work, from previous use I found the Miele bags are the best, the generic cheaper ones boasting more life dont' seem to capture nearly as much dust, perhaps that's why they last longer.

- The design while conservative and converntional feels well made, solid, smooth lined and easy to clean. Judging by previous models the design has been refined over many years rather than making an all new design. As soon as you see it you can tell it wasn't made in a country that has the lowest labour costs. (At the time of writing this review these were still being made in Germany)

- Despite being more powerful and the strongest, suction wise, the Miele was the quietest even on the highest power.

- The bags do need replacing but they last quite awhile, aren't that expensive and are easily available since most Mieles take one of only a couple of model bags (My local Goodguys actually has them in stock). The Hepa, Active Charcoal and combined Hepa/charcoal filters are less available in stores but easily bought from Miele's online Australian store. They have a large area so they don't restrict motor exhaust and most Miele vacuums that have these filter options use only one of a couple model filters between them.

Other notes:

I'm quite happy with the length of the power cord, although it is missing that little warning sticker when you near the end of the reel but I just put one on so I don't pull too hard. The cord return is one press and works fine, although from previous experience I know these eventually fail or weaken. I like how the hose clips in top at an angle rather than directly in front and how the motor exhaust is upward from the top rather than at the back. It also comes with tools nicely stored under a flap on top of the machine rather than clipped onto the outside or onto the telescopic metal piping. The little flap on the bag which closes when take the hose out is a nice touch in keeping the dust/dirt from escaping when throwing out the bag. Even though I have to replace the bags it's much better than having to wash the reversed sock style bags.

Ah "But it can't all be good" I hear you say and yes I find a couple of things that can/will annoy other purchasers.

- The thing that other purchases would find 'most' annoying is that the standard head is hard to push across plusher pile carpets at higher power due to it's suction. I then wonder if it is extracting dust/dirt as effectively when I have to turn the power down so end up keeping it at high power but pulling the head rather than pushing it. I have a feeling this applies to most vacuums anyway.

- The section you lift to remove the bag can be a little tricky to put back down because its hinges work to hold the lid up after it's raised, it was the same on my friend's old S5 series infact one of his family had broken one of the hinges because of this.

These are some little niggles that I found that might annoy others if I'm being really picky but they weren't enough to lower my opinion on the performance of this vacuum.

- The Hepa filter is not included you have to buy that separately, it has a simple after motor filter that you can clean but I'd rather have the proper Hepa filter. It clips in easily though when you do get one.

- The Turbo brush has to be bought separately and not always available in the stores where you buy the vacuum. It was an extra $100 from Miele.com.au's online shop for the Turbo comfort head. Certain models in the S8 series have these as standard so perhaps look at one of those.

- Technically its not as interesting as bagless vacuums, the technology is tried and tested but you can't see the dust and dirt flying around in it. I'm one of those people that watch washing machines go through their cycles so I find much novelty in this.

- A Motorhead brush is not available for this model but having had other vacuums where a power cable was integrated into the hose to power the head or suction control I've found the hoses expensive to replace so the simpler the better. Suction power, Efficiency & Effectiveness, Design, Noise level, Bag availability, Build quality If I'm picky - Standard head can be hard to push across plusher pile carpet at high power, Tricky bag compartment hinges, Hepa filter not included as standard
