I received no response from SMEG
Hi Beverley, I had the same problem quite some time ago and SMEG replaced the circuit board. Might be cheaper to replace the who unit. external link

Hi. I have a SMEG P591 and the lights have been intermittent in terms of being able to be turned off and on with one touch. It usually takes one or two presses before it works. Now the lights won't turn off at all. The fan buttons all work and the filters are clean. What am I doing wrong?

Hi there from Geoff We have the classic591ss model ands it needed service within the warranty period. We have always kept ther filters clean but not been really happy with the performance. It sounds like a jumbo jet when working, certainly not the quietness alluded to in the brochure on purchase. Now the lights work but fan does not, just makes a low pitched noise which intensifies a little as you go up thru the speed settings. HELP! Whats wrong the thing now?
Hi, I have the CLASSIC791SS and the 0-1 light keeps flashing red when the motor is off. I have tried pressing it for 2 secs but it’s still flashing... We have ours ducted. Thanks
Hi, did you find an answer to this? This is exactly what is happening with ours. The filters are clean and we have tried resetting the timers
I have a smeg classic 792 model, the 0-1 button flashes red, I have held down the light button to try and reset it but does not stop the 0-1 button flashing red, how do I stop it

Having problem with the (1) fan indicator continues to blink when not in use. Fan operating fine and lights but when you turn the fan on then off a few seconds and the indicator is blinking again. I do not have charcoal filter and I clean the other filters regularly. Can you give me a solution to solve the problem. Thanks
I had the same problem after I replaced the start up capacitor. I didn't do anything specifically to target that problem, but as LED lights stopped working I jiggled all the wiring, re-seated them and LED started and blinking stopped! Not really a working practical solution!
Hi Bev, The clean grease filter reminder has gone off. Please see explanation below on how to reset it: ON/OFF - lamps. This button is also used for the alarm function of the anti-grease and charcoal filters. Filter alarm: After 30h of motor operation, the L1 RED LED comes ON and remains ON for 30" (the grease filters have to be cleaned). After 120h of motor operation, the L1 RED LED comes ON and flashes for 30" (the charcoal filters have to be changed if the hood is so equipped). The Filter Alarm is ONLY given with the motor is OFF. The Filter Alarm is cancelled (HOUR meter reset) by holding down button A for 2". Regards Smeg
Great appreciate your response. Have successfully fixed the problem with your advice. THANK YOU
I am a bit nervous about buying this product as it will require cabinet modification. I'm very encouraged by the SMEG service manager's responses though. How is the dB measured? From what location? A or B?
Expensive to get spare parts and repair fees find something else.
Walk away from the idea of buying it. Personal experience with Smeg products is not good. I'm in NZ so we may get the rejects from everyone else!
Dear Jonathan, Noise level is a bit of a tricky one. It is done to the IEC standards where it is placed is a sound proof room and sound measurements are taken from multiple locations then averaged out to give the dB level. The problem is that this level rarely relates to in house installations as there a many variablesch as the type of ducting used as well as the lenght and bends as well.Regards Steve Cullen
I have a P591- installed as recirculating and installed in overhead cabinet. Noted all the complaints above but fingers xd (although it is way noisier than claimed dbls). Am using 'iso' to get ahead of cleaning (although is only 6 months old). But, I had requested charcoal filter, given the strata was not letting me vent externally and nosing around, can't see anything that looks like a filter other than the metal ones. It vents back into kitchen from overhead cabinet Happy to buy these as apparently available as spare part, but where are they fitted? And do I need a tradie to do it?
Dear Jinx, I am the National l Service Manager for Smeg and I would like to assist with this problem, the charcoal filters are fitted to the sides of the motor. If they are not there then you can purchase them from our Spare Parts Department by calling 02 86674875 and they will post them direct so you can fit them yourself Regards, Steve Cullen
Hi Steve, thanks for the prompt response. On a second look, I'm not convinced there's space for them on both sides. There seems to be an electrics box on one side of the motor against the slope of the casing. Or are they quite slim? Do they just clip on?
Dear Jinx, Can you please scan me a photo of the rating plate and also supply me your address, I will then double check and if OK I will send you these for you to try, email is steve.cullen@smeg.com.au regards Steve.
My Classic 591SS hood was installed Sept 2016 and both lights have failed together with the red light flashing. Can I pop these out and replace myself?

My 591SS Rangehood has stopped working. The light works - the anti grease filters are clean - there is no red light to show any filter alarm. I take I this model does not have any charcoal filters. Green light comes on, on the various speed buttons but the fan does not activate. Is there some reset needed here? Regards Robin [details removed]
Hi Robin. Thank you for your enquiry. You can purchase charcoal filters for this model rangehood. The part number is 902979982 and you can order these via our Spare Parts Department. The email address is spareparts@smeg.com.au or you can contact them on 02 8667 4875. In relation to the fan not working you may require a service call for this. We can discuss this with you when you contact us in relation to the filters. Kind Regards, Smeg Australia.
My Classic SS591 lights have just failed together. Red light flashing on the display. Cant reset. Not charcoal filter as its ducted. Strange both LED lights would go together. looking at above, looks like the driver may be stuffed. Any insights please?

I have a 2015 SMEG Classic 591 and both lights have failed at the same time. It doesn’t seem possible to change just the bulbs. Can anyone advise? I live in NZ and am worried as the reviews for what wasn’t a cheap extractor aren’t great plus it’s now discontinued and replacement lamp parts seem expensive.
Thanks for your query- this is an Australian review site you will need to contact Smeg New Zealand to discuss this matter. Regards Lesley
I had problems with mine also. It was not the lights that failed as they are LED and seem pretty fail safe but it was the transformer that powers them. It was very expensive to replace this as a genuine part. I did source a non genuine transformer that seemed right by the output and specs but it would not work ( waste of money). Ended up with genuine from smeg. No problems with lights since then, but then motor failed,,, that was a whole new saga. Tim.
Hi guys we wanted quality, so we paid extra and got SMEG. We purchased the SMEG top of the range oven and dishwasher and two of these extraction fans. Overall, we have had the technician out about 5 or 6 times for failures and problems. LEDs have just failed again on one of the units and it will be expensive to fix based upon our past experience. We are unhappy with these fans, the technician (Josh) is great and very helpful, but we are unhappy about the ongoing costs and inconvenience. We have purchased cheaper appliances in the past and had years of service fee use.
Is there a newer model extraction fan that is more reliable than these? LEDs are supposed to last for many years but it seems the capacitors have a design deficiency that causes premature failures. Is there a fix to this latent defect? If not, regardless of the expired warranty period, we seek unfunded failure support for what we assess to be a latent defect. cheers
