Smeg Retro Style 256L Top Mount (FAB28 Series) Questions & Answers
VerifiedCan someone please let me know when Smeg delivers a working retro fridge with auto defrost? I would definitely buy one because i love the look, but won't risk these problems. They are too numerous and all the same - rotting seals, condensation everywhere, water leaking into the bottom, manual defrost, cheap plastic internals, cooling issues, loud. Fix it and people will buy them. I don't know why they are continued to be sold the way they are.
My Smeg retro style 256L (Fab28 series) was received last week. The door is Super hard to open. And now it gives our very loud noise from the back of the fridge. Not sure if the super heavy door is normal or the loud noise from the back is normal too. Can someone pls help to advise?
Dear Jerlyn, I am the National l Service Manager for Smeg and I would like to assist with this problem, could you please email me direct at steve.cullen@smeg.com.au with your address, contact details and also scan me a photograph of the rating plate from inside the appliance. Once I have this information I will be in a position to ascertain what to do to fix these problems. Regards, Steve Cullen
Hi Jerlyn, the door will ease with use. I'm thinking the seals are new. Loud noise from back of the fridge not so good. Having the service manager on board is a bonus
How or where do I get the service manager to assess the fridge?
Hi there, I am considering this fridge (mainly for aesthetic reasons, as this review site does not give me any certainty that this will be a product worth buying for the long term). Have any of the issues related to these fridges been remedied in the latest model?
Hi Gigi, I too fell in love with the aesthetics and it is sad to say this purchase has not been a good journey. I had to mess around and return the first one because of loud clunking (enough to make you jump) and the freezer is way too small. If it is for looks only and to store wine and a couple of ice cubes fine. Perhaps the latest model has rectified the issues I had but for the same $ you can now buy far more functional options. With bigger freezers. Good luck
Can you reverse the door?
Hi Sue, Yes, it is possible, but you would have to buy a new door.

Can somebody tell me how to stop my 4 month old retro look smeg upside down model fridge, from getting condensation in the crisper. Everything goes off , soggy . So disappointed as my old fridge was so much better
Hi Karen Wallis smith, Sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your fridge. We would suggest to set the fridge temperature to 3°C for optimum storage. If you see no improvement after changing the temperature, please contact our service department to organise one of our technicians to check the fridge.

Hi, I have had my smeg fab28 for a number of years now so it is well out of warranty. I was wondering if you can help me. The two plastic door shelves are very fragile and keep falling down if any weight at all is put on them. I've been to get them replaced once but they're broken again.
I put one of them on the very bottom so it is held up by the bottom contour of the door. The other I basically leave empty but whenever I have a house guest or family visit they put a few things on it and down it comes all over them. What do you recommend? Regards, Janet. Earlwood Sydney.
Hi Janet. Of the various problems I encountered with my Smeg fab28 fridges, the shelves on the door were not included. Though, given your experience, possibly something to look out for as time goes by. When searching on-line for information about Smeg fridges, I came across references to some businesses having spare parts, though the main focus was on replacement seals. I would suggest getting in touch with the Smeg service centre, who might have, or be able to get, replacement shelves. For example, when my first Smeg fab 28 was taken away and replaced with my second fridge, I was told the fridge would be used for spare parts - it had all the shelves and drawers inside, near new, as the fridge was less than 12 months old. Good luck.
