I got a stihl fs 38 whipper snipper and when it gets hot after using it for about 5 minutes it just cuts out
The biggest problem and why there are so many negative comments about this whipper snipper ,especially the head not feeding out is because you don’t read the operating manual ,,,Like me I just unscrewed the head and tried to feed it on as in my old whipper snipper …..winding it by hand , You don’t thread it that way ! So…..Openboth yout arms as far as they will go ..Right ! That is the amount of line needed simply grab the head ,align the 2 arrows and slide the line though the hole until it’s hanging equal on each side …the just simply wind the head up like you are winding a clock…easy ,it’s done ,when you need to tap it on the ground to extend the line …Rev the engine hard as you do it …easy works every time just read the manual ,,don’t wind it as you did your old whipper snipper ,,,I wish the shop would have told me this when they sold it to me.. also the complaint of the engine leaning out because the choke only has 2 positions you can put the choke half way ,you simply have to raise the lever a fraction and rest it on that high spot inbetween .Now that whipper snipper is working as it should ….,I’m sure most of these comments are because people don’t read the instructions ,,I’m happy with mine now
Not everyone is an invalid, the head design they have now is a down grade from the one that it use to be sold with. When the bump feed button wears downs and you buy a new head assembly and the new one wears down at what only seems to be at a faster rate, you will need to start carrying and tool in your back pocket, because if or should i say when there is a problem to rectify there is nothing for your finger tips to grip so it can be undone and done up. Abit annoying when its sunday and the part shops are shut. I've had two fs38 motors die after about 5 years. Even took one in for a service and the fee wasnt far off the price for a new one, it died not long after the service. The fs38 is made in china and stihl isnt Australian owned. Ive made the switch to Bushranger which is a 100% Australian owned business and there line trimmer I own is made in japan, it also has a far better head design. It's a two prong clip system apposed to the screw on bumb feed button, the clip system makes fixing feed issues on the head easy and only takes seconds. Ive used stihl for years and now i realise there are better products on the market at the same price point.

Have a Fs 38 auto cut 6-2 2 stroke that i got from my father-in-law. He said it never did feed at all. When I restrung the two lines, and tighten down on lug nut, there was no play for the bump feeder. The spring is in good shape, it seems like its missing a spacer or something. I can loosely tighten down on the plastic lug nut and i get some play that way but i'm concerned it might fly off. Any thoughts?

Likely to be a fuel issue as it's running on choke when the fuel ratio is richer. Try changing the fuel filter and carby and also try running it without the air filter. Carbies are less than $20 on eBay and only take 5 minutes to fit, not worth the effort to clean them and replace parts.
How long does the fuel last before empty
My old trimmer lasted quite some time depending on the kind of clearing I was carrying out. When I edged I kept the revs low so as not to use too much line. When I was clearing a block, I increased the revs according to the kind of scrub I was clearing. I tuned it myself to get the maximum economy. It is hard to put an exact time on it but I was never disappointed with it in both its performance and economy.
Haven't used trimmer for 6 months. Started 3rd pull. Ran sweet but Started to drop green oily substance. Could it be gearbox oil.?????
Anyone aware of a way to attach a metal blade to a fs38? I know you are supposed to have a straight arm but wondering if anyone found a way so I can edge trim better
You should NOT try to jimmy up a metal blade to fit to a whipper sniper. It would be very dangerous, as it would be unbalanced and unguarded. There are universal slashing heads available if you care to search on the internet.

What fuel do I need for a fs38 is it 2stroke or petrol thanks
It’s 2 stroke (special 2 stroke oil mixed in gasoline). It’s a great string trimmer! Love it!

My Stihl FS38 is 5 years old and now starts ok ,but then suddenly cuts out, usually with a little backfire, ive clean out the carby, spark arrester,fuel filter etc but no joy,plug looks ok, re-tuned the carby, run out of ideas, anyone got any clues ???
Run it without the air filter and see if that helps. I'd just buy a new carb and see if that works. They're only cheap, you can get them on eBay for less than $20 and they're very simple to fit.

This is usually the problem, these engines like to work at high rpm which in turn helps keep the exhaust clear. Good luck.
Am about to replace complete head on this stihl as it no longer bump feeds after many years of loyal service,anything I need to know before going for the tools,I have a tendency of scoring shafts through frustration,Cheers Krusty.
It's pretty straight forward. I often change between the trimmer line head and the polycut head.

Probably the diaphragm located under the primer bulb. That or a blocked jet or fuel filter.
