Dyson DC54 Questions & Answers
VerifiedMy carpet head for the DC54 has lost it fabric strip. Can this be replaced?
I will think so
Hi alisonr, the velvet soleplate strip isn't available separately, to resolve this issue we'd suggest replacing the Turbine head, which is sold here on our website: external link external link
high pitch sound
Hi how do I clean the inside of the cyclones on my DC54 can I use water or just use a brush ?
Is there a filter in this model? If so where is it?
My vacuum has suction until you put the turbo head on then there is no suction at all. I have checked for blockages and thoroughly cleaned the brush bar. Still no suction. There appears to be a small filter below the ball of the turbo head. Could that be the problem ?
Thanks for your question, ToniF we'd like to have an opportunity to troubleshoot with you prior to confirming that could the issue. Please contact us for support here: external link We'd also suggest going through these checkpoints to check your Dyson DC54™ vacuum for obstructions: external link
What is the blue strip on the side of the DC54 bin use for?
There is a blue tool on the side of the DC54 bin that is used for clearing the Cyclone mesh shroud that sits inside the clear bin. The end cap on my DC54 brush head keeps coming loose whenever I vacuum hard surfaces, unless I turn off the spinning. Do I need a new end cap or full brush head? I have already cleaned the head and brush roller, there are no blockages and still good suction just that the vibrations on hard surfaces are causing the cap to fall off and then the brush head comes loose.
So we can best assist, we'd kindly encourage sending photos of the head and end cap to auaskdyson@dyson.com. Our Dyson Experts will only be happy to assist in getting you a resolution.
Can the suction be reduced for a rug
To reduce suction, you can pull the trigger in the handle to reduce suction by about 1/3 for cleaning more delicate surfaces. If we can assist further, our Dyson Experts are only happy to help. You can find our contact details here: external link
Turbo head spins while in the air but spasmodic spinning on the carpet
Yes mine does that as well, sometimes on carpet the head completely stops spinning. There isn’t enough torque being generated on the head to overcome the friction the carpet pile creates. Hence my unsatisfactory review regarding performance on carpets.
We are sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties and are happy to help. We'd recommend to remove the brushbar using a ten or twenty cent coin to twist the cap at the end of the cleanerhead that retains the brushbar counterclockwise (as shown here: external link . Once done, you will be able to remove both the cap and the brushbar. Please then check the cavity where the brushbar was in the cleanerhead and clear out any debris. You should be able to look through the neck of the head and see straight through. Please then reassemble and retry the turbine.
In the unlikely event you are still experiencing difficulty, please run through the troubleshooting for a loss of suction outlined here: external link

Our DC54 motor noise has become very high pitched & it seems to have lost some suction, what may be the cause?

our turbo head will not spin, the "drive" end of the brush seems jammed, wont move. we have taken it apart and cleaned but no help. How do we remove the "drive" end to maintain this section?
Hi David. I had exactly the same problem. Dyson inform me I need to get a new turbo head, which isn't cheap. I'm worried that if I do get a new head it's actually a problem with the whole machine. I've had it 6 years but rarely used it so pretty disappointed. It appears from this thread the turbo head stopping is a common complaint. Dyson must know this and should replace the head free of charge.
For best assistance we would kindly encourage getting in touch with our Dyson Experts via live chat, Facebook Messenger or phone (our contact details can be found here: external link The difficulty you are encountering could indicate the Turbine Head needs to be replaced, however we will be happy to assist confirming if this is the case, or if we can get this sorted otherwise.
We hope to hear from you and look forward to assisting.
Unfortunately the advice is to get a new turbo head. So my options are to get an appliance service to confirm that it is the head and not some other problem, or purchase a new head in hope. Both are expensive. As the machine has had such little use, I am hesitant about the outlay in the expectation that it will again need replacing way before it should. In other words I just can't trust it.
my cleaner sucked a cloth up but cant find it seems to be in barrel how do I open that
I have managed to fix it myself thanks to a YouTube video Thank you
I took my brushbar out to remove hair and now it doesn't spin.

I have run through all the suggested actions and it still doesn't work. I'm afraid I'll have to buy a replacement head at some expense, but worried it mightn't work either. Really disappointed it has stopped after so little use.
We are sorry to hear about this, please reach out to our Dyson Experts via live chat, Facebook Messenger or phone and we'll be happy to look into possible resolutions for you as we do handle everything case by care.
I have been informed I need to buy another head. It is clear from this thread that many people have had the same issue. There is no reason for the head to stop working apart from faulty design, in my case at least - nothing blocked it, well maintained and rarely used. I don't wish to pay the high price for a new head but can't get a new vacuum at the moment. On top of that, I worry that the problem is something else in the machine and a new head wouldn't work either. I'm sure when I do get a new vacuum it will not be a Dyson, despite many years of having earlier models, and getting them for my family.
How do I release the barrel of the Dyson DC 54?
Do you mean the bin? There's a button same colour as the main barrel.
Thank you for your query, You can find a support document complete with graphics showing how to remove and empty the bin of your Dyson DC54 here: external link If we can assist further, our Dyson Experts are available via phone, live chat and Facebook Messenger and happy to help. I have a Dyson Dc 54 (about 4-6 years old). Is there suppose to be a rubber seal of some sort between the top duct assy and the cyclone assy? That is were you replace the bin after emptying it) I've only noticed recently that it is actually sucking air in and when you pick it up on the handle it is as if the seal is complete lost and almost no suction turbine tool.
While there isn't a rubber seal between the handle and cyclone, it will seal when the handle is closed. Should the machine be carried while during use, the machine may flex which may lead to a temporary leak until the machine is put back down.
That being said, it won't be enough to dramatically effect performance, and we would encourage running through the troubleshooting via this link which should help get this sorted for you. external link
If this doesn't rectify the difficulty, the troubleshooting tool will provide the contact information for our Dyson Experts so we can get this sorted for you.
I have had my Dyson DC54 for only 2 months and it has developed a problem I cannot fix. If I remove the head there is suction but when I replace the head, there is none even though the brush is moving around. I have taken out and cleaned the brush but there's no improvement. The weird thing is it feels as if the head is blowing OUT air when it is connected. It's very frustrating to experience a problem like this when this costly vac is so new. I'd return it under warranty but if this is a known issue, I won't get a replacement. Any idea what the problem might be and how to fix it?
If the turbine head is blowing dust around, there is most likely a blockage within the turbine head itself. We recommend to remove the brushbar using a ten or twenty cent coin to twist the cap at the end of the cleanerhead that retains the brushbar counterclockwise (as shown here: external link . Once done, you will be able to remove both the cap and the brushbar. Please put these aside and then check the head itseld, particularly the cavity where the brushbar was in the cleanerhead and clear out any debris. You should be able to look through the neck of the head and see straight through. Please then reassemble and retry the turbine.

Yesterday I purchased the tangle free turbine tool. I have a DC54 and was told it was compatible. The leaflet inside the packaging says it is compatible....but....I can’t fit it on....any suggestions. The join bit is the same size as the pipe so won’t click into place

How do I empty my d54? Yes, I release the clip on the side of the bin. Yes, I push the red button. Nothing happens. Very very frustrating. Help!
The bin on your DC54 should easily empty as shown here: external link (the machine shown will look different, but the procedure is the same). If your machine isn't emptying as it should, please get in touch with our Dyson Experts and we will only be happy to help. You can find ways to get in touch here: external link

Hi Lisa,

My Dyson DC54 has hardly any suction. I have checked and can't find any blockages. I read that a dirty filter may affect the suction. Can I wash the filter and the top part of the vacuum (the yellow head) out with water?
The Dyson DC54 features Dyson Cinetic Science which means it has no filters that need to be washed or replaced. While the yellow cyclone assembly shouldn't be washed, understanding you have checked for blockages, we would recommend visiting this link to ensure all areas of the machine have been checked: external link

Hi,
Our Dyson DC54 - the electrical cord has a little hole in it... and 'sparked' when we last turned it on.
Last few times we used it... noticed kept going on and off (cord issue) but now... 1st time we saw sparks coming off grey cord.
Can this be fixed / replaced by you?
Thanks,
Val
This is certainly something we can assist with. Until this is resolved, please unplug the machine from power supply.
