I advertised for someone to house sit for us and the first respondent sounded ideal. She said she was interested, I texted her, she said she was busy and would phone the next day. Since then she has not responded to my texts. Her reviews are all very good so I am wondering how accurate the review process is. There is no way to leave a review in this case as no sitting has been confirmed. If she is this unreliable I should be able to warn others. Very annoying.

Thank you for contacting us about this. I'm sorry that this sitter didn't respond to your subsequent messages. We do expect all our members to communicate promptly and respectfully. At this stage our review system is only for house sits which have taken place. Reviews can only be posted by registered members and the house sit has to have been confirmed via our platform. We do have a reply rating which is visible on a member's profile and you can see how promptly they respond to 'first contact' messages via our website. You are very welcome to contact us directly via admin@aussiehousesitters.com.au to raise any concerns you have as this will allow us to provide you with some more specific advice.

Hi I am inteersted in accessing the service, can you advsie how you vet the house sitters who are regstered please .Vickie

Aussie House Sitters
Aussie House Sitters   DM

Thank you for your question. Aussie House Sitters acts as a meeting place for owners and sitters to find each other and negotiate house sitting opportunities. As a result we don't screen or vet our members (owners or sitters).

Homeowners are able to ask for whatever you need to feel comfortable that you have the right person. You can ask for police clearance and it’s a must to ask for references and also perhaps a phone referee so you can talk to a homeowner they have previously worked for. If a house sitter has reviews from house sits organised through our platform these will appear on their sitter profile for you to view.

If you place an ad on our site then you can have interested sitters contact you and you can interview them, check references and choose the most suitable candidate. In your ad you are able to ask for what you need e.g. police clearance, specific experience in a certain area (dog care, gardening etc).

After speaking with a few sitters, most home owners feel very comfortable with the process. Also, many sitters offer references and police checks as part of their profile. As a homeowner you can read as many sitter profiles as you like and contact those sitters who seem most suitable.

You are welcome to contact us at admin@aussiehousesitters.com.au if you have any further questions.

I have been a homeowner and member of Aussie House Sitters for many, many years and have never had a problem with a sitter. There are some that I may not ask again, but the animals have always been looked after, they have always been honest and most have been very neat and tidy. Apart from the security check as mentioned by Aussie HouseSitters, I always ask for a landline number of a person they have worked for or someone who is independent and would know their character, e.g. a GP, Pastor/Priest, someone they have worked for etc. To contact this reference, they need to be contactable by a landline where I can ask for the person. That way I know the reference is not from a friend. A mobile phone is not secure enough as I have no idea who is at the end of the line. Treat it like a job application. If possible, I try to meet the person before making my final decision, it works both ways, the potential sitter sees what the accommodation and the animal(s) are really like and you get more of a feel for who you intend to hand your front door key to. I hope this additional information helps.

I would say yes as it may not be compatable to the home owners animals. But if small and controlable and kept outside the residence it could work.

Does the yearly payment start from time of letting out your home or from the 1st house sit?

Aussie House Sitters
Aussie House Sitters   DM

It's actually free for homeowners but if you're a sitter then the 12 months registration starts from the date you registered, so you get the full 12 months :))

We have sold our house in inner city Melbourne and have bought in Bendigo. Trouble is there is almost a three month gap between the two settlement dates (i.e.October, November, December) and we need a place to stay while we continue to work in the city - Richmond and Fitzroy. I don't see any longer term house sits anywhere. Do they ever come up?

Hi, Aussie house sitters are legit, we have had contact already with potential house sits. If in doubt about a company when paying money online, we always go thru paypal. PayPal is always safe & fair.

Hope this helps.

WE like Aussie house sitters so far.

How do i find details of our sitter?

Susan
Susan

You can't find honest details of how many homes they have damaged, or whether they have been dishonest. It is up to the sitter entirely what information you will see about them.

Aussie House Sitters
Aussie House Sitters   DM

Yes, we are about to introduce a rating system so both sides can rate the other after the house sit has been completed. Previously we warn or remove sitters and homeowner who acted dishonestly. Two complaints against the same member is a life ban.

we have our own little dog.Can we still house sit?

Thriftymaria
Thriftymaria

It depends on your dog,the property, the animals already on the property and the property owner. Hopefully your dog copes well with moving frequently,is not destructive and is house trained.Very important to make sure that the property is securely fenced so that your dog won't escape.Don't housesit if your dog is likely to eat the cat or chooks,or if the owner has a big aggressive dog that's unfriendly to other dogs. Also be aware that in many urban areas people will complain if dogs bark excessively.

It is important that from the outset you are honest and ask the owner whether they mind you having a dog,and whether he/she has to stay outside.Be prepared to clean up after your dog, some people are allergic to dog hair, and excess dog poo in the garden is not pleasant or hygeinic.

For certain properties, that meet all of the criteria just described, and if you take good care of your dog and the home,I don't see why not.It make take a little longer to build up good references.Good luck!

Hi I'm new too using a sitter and want too know, if I'm paying for flights to travel here and a fee for period I'm away should I also provide our own vehicle to use whilst the sitter is here! It could also be possible that this sitter will pick up other jobs whilst caring for our Pets? Can some one let me know what's some of the terms please? Thank you

Marty
Marty

I'm a bit puzzled by your question, normally you wouldn't have to pay a fee to the housesitter. I have heard of the houseowners paying for flights. Do you live in an isolated spot ? If the sitter doesnt have a car, Id think very seriously as to the level of insurance you have. You would have to check they have a current licence if they are on a tourist visa. You should know exactly what the sitter expects before giving them the opportunity to stay in your home, have you had a conversation with them ? You can contact me again if you still confused. From my experience, the website is not totally accurate, as the people that run it don't allow any negative feedback end of story. So there is a certain ammount of risk involved.

DeeDee
DeeDee

Thanks for the feedback Marty, we do live very remotely and do actual lay know the person. I asked her to come here so offered to pay for return flights, she is also charging me a fee too housesit and look after my two little dogs. But I am reluctant too loan our vehicle also so just wanted some feedback about some of the rules / requirements on housesitters.

Cheers

I have been housesitting for 10 yrs, I pay for travel, by car, if someone is kind enough to offer $50_$100 for fuel, I'm grateful. Also to know there is a decent, clean home to arrive to, and, in return leave it the same as you found it! I am a country person so enjoy some isolated locations. Payment is not a requirement of the home owner, as the sitter is using the home etc in the owners absence that is my take on the situation.

(Pertaining to another question/ statement here)There is risk involved on either side, if you find a great sitter / sitters for your home and most importantly your animals, it may be a good thing to set up in advance for your holidays with people you have met before. I like to offer photo/ copy of my licence, especially if my police check is not up to date, just as an added security re my honesty!
