Janome My Excel 3018 (MW18)

work horse and a dream machine with no plastic bits. Only serviced 3 times. My Excel sews everything including layers of denim and with a drop in bobbin holder the Excel is easy to use for a beginner or experienced sewer. $499 from Myer in 1994. These are being rebadged in black as HD's. Just to note, don't be taken in by the 'better' stainless steel bobbins. You'll have problems . I've just upgraded (more stitches) but I will never get rid of my Excel, just like my 26-27 year old overlocker, Janome My lock 534D

stitch, and immediate pick up on pressing the foot pedal. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product. Free motion quilting is so achievable with the wide throat. I make around 20 quilts a year, and free motion quilt all of them.

spools of every colour to cover two machines or have to take them from one machine to use on another.
I do have to do a bit of rethreading for changeover from overlocker to coverstitch but it's minimal and quite straightforward. The stitches look nice and the auto tensions are really quite good with only minor tweaking needed on some fabrics
The only reason I'm giving four stars not five is that this machine is quite noisy and vibrates quite a bit, compared to my last overlocker that was very stable and solid. Overall I'm happy with this machine .
My passion was sewing until a new Janome killed it – My old 1955 Singer sewing machine works a billion times better than this Janome DC6050 I am used to just sitting at the desk for quick little sew as… Read more
well as making my own tailored suites for years. Oh, the waste of time as every time you try a new fabric or change/replace threads it is a major adjustment issue to get the reads to be perfect again. Asked for help from Janome need to pay $2 to get the assistance that was ok but when I went to pay it was $55. Not happy Jam.....ome. My old, old Husqvarna, I could use any thread, any material from silk Georgette - leather everything in between, and any needle once set up at the beginning. Unfortunately, I wore that machine to death no chance of the Janome DC6050 getting worn out
A forgiving machine – I bought this machine, my first sewing machine, after doing a sewing class that I enjoyed, and decided I wanted to explore further as a hobby. I… Read more
wanted a machine above the basic / introduction level - as I assumed I would be enjoying this as a hobby, and didn't want to spend money on a basic machine, then have to spend more on another machine with more features down the track. This machine has not let me down.
I primarily sew with woven cottons, and was fortunate to add an overlocker to my hobby room, so am able to use that for knits now. But this DM7200 just keeps going and going. I prefer to use the press buttons on the machine for the stop / start (rather than the pedal - I know, that seems odd to most others I mention this to), but I don't sew particularly fast most the time (unless its a long seam or a dress hem!)
I've not (yet) tackled the button hole feature - they still spook me a bit, but I've installed countless invisible zippers into garments with next to no issue.
I particularly like the needle thread assist feature - that makes changing thread much easier.
Perhaps though, buying this model was not necessary - I have barely used the table that came with it, nor have I used most the feet, though the hardcover is often used when the machine is not in use (I just wish they made a hard cover for my overlocker too). But I certainly don't regret purchasing this machine, and recommend it to others, if they ask which one I use.
Attachments are overpriced – I agree with the other reviews about the machine, My major complaint I have with the machine is, there is nothing worth while in your parts… Read more
compartment,{ oil needle threader some netting and few other oddments nothing worth while at all } I would say a total of $ 5.00 in my opinion and that is being extremely generous The one thing I am most annoyed about is the price of attachments for the Cover pro, There is no possible excuse you could give me for the pricing on these extras, some as high as $200.00Aust dollar. Which may I add ,you do need them if I you wish to continue using the machine to its full potential . .Australian company's complain about people shopping overseas this is only one example of the reason why people do it .If you consider buying this machine Price, all extras you need first I have found that dealers will not discount , and it will add dramatically to the price of the machine If I had known this first, and must admit I did not do my ground work as I normally do , in this case the blame falls on me , would I have bought this machine in all honesty no, I would not, I do not like over paying for items that cannot justly be justified in this case, I do not think they can be. I am sure many will disagree with me and some will not and that is how it should be. I rated this machine a three the pricing of the extra feet needed are overpriced and you defiantly need the clear foot as it is not supplied only a old fashioned metal foot , only the start of your extra payment journey

it and I am about to buy another one for my daughter to use. My original decision to buy it was I wanted an industrial sewing machine but live in a rural area so didn't know how I would get it serviced when needed so started looking at what else and came up with the Janome Semi Industrial which has been perfect for what I need and easy to get serviced. I change the needle regularly, use quality cotton and give it a clean and oil regularly and service once a year @ $110. No problems at all. Love it.
Needle threader problematic – I use it for general sewing, mending, constructing garments, making bags and patchworking. I like the ease of use now I am familiar with the machine.… Read more
The up/down needle function is worthwhile having (wasn't available on my previous machine). The quarter inch patchwork stitch is accurate and easy to use. After a few teething problems such as my arthritic hands not tightening the needle on enough (I was advised not to use the screwdriver supplied as I was told too tight is not good), I now use the screwdriver for needle tightening which eradicated the stitching problems I was having. It took a while for me to thread it correctly because help from the retailer was spasmodic as it was during covid lockdowns. All fine now. The needle threader is very contrary- it will like one particular needle in the same packet as one that won't thread (all Janome needles). Also, initially I had problems with the stitch selections not functioning. I took the machine back to the retailer for fixing and have had no problems since.
Great machine for first timers – very good machine for doing most jobs, Instruction manual is very poorly written and diagrams leave a bit to be desired. However after some practice… Read more
I have mastered threading the machine and coupled with the correct tensions for the machine it works a treat. make sure that you have all tensions set a 3 and the side dials set as follows differential feed: 1 and Stitch length: 2.5- 3 and you will be surprised with the results. Once you have mastered that then you can experiment some more. Happy stitching performs very well, wouldn not be without it. value for money purchase. initally threading the lower looper had its downfalls but have mastered it using a needle which works great. The instruction manual is absolutely horrific. It rates as the worst manual i have ever read so far. the numbering system and diagrams are crap.
Don't waste your money – This is the worst machine I've ever used! Not worth the price. Not even good for a high school home ec class. DISGUSTED that a brand like Janome could put their name to this! Show details

machine that never fails to please. While it is promoted in the quilting range of machine with an 11" freearm, it is equally as appealing to any home sewist no matter what you wish to sew. Mostly I make clothes and home dec items but have just made a couple of handbags and a lined hat for Winter and the 8900SE never hesitates on any fabric or project. The extra-lift presser foot is handy if sewing bulky items.
At 1000 spm (stitches per minute) it won't take all day to sew things either, but on the other hand it will also go stitch-by-stitch with great precision. Speed can be controlled by a slider switch on the front or via the large foot pedal...this new large foot pedal is great and allows you to use either foot without having to move it. If you prefer to ditch the foot pedal that's Ok too, because the stop/start button is yet another option and within easy reach along with reverse, lock stitch, needle up/down and thread cutter (scissors). Needle up/down can also be adjusted in the Settings menu along with heaps of other personal settings so the machine is tailored to how 'you' want to sew.
The extra long freearm (11") is very useful as is the LED lighting and of course, the adjustable knee lift is great when you want to keep your hands on your project. The automatic sliding buttonhole foot (R) now has a stabiliser plate to use when stitching a buttonhole in an uneven area, such as top buttonhole on a shirt where the collar and/or facings combine to make the surface uneven...attach the stabiliser plate to even out the surface. There are 11 built-in auto buttonholes including a welted buttonhole and
The needle thread cuts perfectly 'every' time and pulls thread tails to the back. This model does a 9mm wide stitch that is 5mm long and 270 built-in deco stitches with 3 alphabets. Auto tension and 7 piece feed dog system is yet another great feature and the detachable Acufeed foot holder where you can attach a variety of different foot plates is 'the' best! You will never need a clunky walking foot again.
The free-arm storage unit, when in place, gives a large flat surface for sewing not to mention it's a great place to store the accessories but feet can also be stored under the top lid. A good assortment of feet and accessories comes as standard with this machine, the SE is an upgrade of the previous 8900 and denoted by the 'Special Edition' logo on the front, bottom right of the machine. It has a soft blue faceplate too whereas the 8900 has several colour options.
So many inclusions with this machine such as an extra large clear extension table and a semi-hard machine cover to keep it dust free when not being used, although you will 'want' to use this machine all day and half the night, it's really intuitive and fun to use.
For anyone wanting a machine that is simple and easy to use I can highly recommend this model, it has never let me down.

table, knee lift, 3 bright LED lights, large 10" throat, HP or high performance foot is amazing slow to 60 and fast to 1200 stiches per minute, can handle all fabrics, auto off can be set, good bobbin winding, can take large thread cones, drop in bobbin
I love this sewing machine. I have had it for 12 months, and it has been the best investment. It is quality, easy to use, and has heaps of sewing options. I highly recommend it for sewers of all level.

then replaced the needle threader. It doesn't work on #11 needles, which one generally uses for embroidery, but is faultless on purple needles. I miss the smaller hoops which were good for baby's clothes. The quilting features are also very good.
I bought the machine and it was upgraded to ver 2 for me. I later upgraded it myself to ver 2.11. Now this machine is being marketed as Horizon Quilt Maker Memory Craft 15000. Owners of the earlier 15000 can upgrade to ver 3.
Now here is the problem - the upgrade contains extra features in both embroidery and quilting and some new feet. Here in Australia it costs $499 for the upgrade as one has to take all the new feet as well. In the US and Canada the basic upgrade is free and is done by the dealer. It requires swapping over the p foot and 9mm foot holder and installing the software. Then they have an additional upgrade pack with the new feet and needle plate included.
I only want to update my machine to use the embroidery features, I'm not interested in the ruler work etc at this time. I would prefer to buy any new feet as I require them. Given the cost of this machine, simple and basic upgrades should remain free.
I have written to Janome but have not had a reply or acknowledgement of my email. It seems yet another instance of Australian consumers being treated differently to those in other countries.

Janome DC3200 machine. The issues include looping of the stitches, a lack of power when starting off on even slightly thicker fabrics than basic cottons and when crossing seams, and an unattractive stitch. Despite having sewn for decades, I am constantly wasting time having to work out what is going wrong. The instruction booklet is poorly set out and snippets of the same topic are scattered without reliable index referencing. The main issues present as being related to tension - this machine is poorly adaptable to different fabrics and requires constant fine-tuning. The trick to starting sewing even slightly thicker fabrics only works with one foot so this limitation is a nuisance as the material frequently fails to feed. I am writing this to encourage those seeking a reliable sewing machine to research alternative machines as this one is more than frustrating. Regret purchasing it and I am no longer enjoying sewing.
