The life of any product is directly related to the way the product has been used, maintained, charged, discharged and stored. As with any electronic device, we cannot guarantee the exact lifespan of the product. However, we do guarantee that we will provide full support within the warranty period.

I used this shaver once every 10 days however Philips deliberately design their product to only last while still under warranty. Do not buy!

Poor quality and design – I've owned a lot of trimmers and groomers but this is by far the worst one. The plastic looks and feels like something from a dollar store. And the… Read more

way the different heads slide on is horrible, it's so easy to slide it on crooked. You have to slide it on level and dead straight, words fail me as it's just so terrible. Removing them isn't much better. And most people are right-handed, so why on earth would you put the switch on the left, so idiotic?

Also, the manual is poorly written, nowhere does it tell you how to remove the trimmer blade to oil it. It tells you to refer to a section that doesn't exist, I had to look it up on YouTube. Not that it made much difference as the oil hole is tiny and it's just easier oiling the blades than going to all that trouble. The hilarious part is the manual states it's a quality product, with spelling mistakes throughout and a missing section. Also it doesn't tell you when it's charged as the light is red while charging and that's it, it doesn't change colour, blink or turn off so you have to guess. Thought mine was faulty as it didn't change colour after 48 hours and the worthless manual doesn't tell you it only lights red. Had to email the company to find out it doesn't change colour. The caddy is absolutely useless, the heads and combs just sit on it, a fly going past will knock them out.

The only good thing is the nose trimmer, it's superb and very effective, easily the best I've ever used.

Luckily I only paid $8 for this as I used a promotion credit, but even then I feel ripped off. My first and last VS product.

New Clippers are a big disappointment – I'm a long term user of Remington shavers and hair clippers and usually expect to get at least two years use out of them. This product was purchased… Read more

in 2023 from BigW. On opening the box, I noticed that they are much lighter than traditional clippers. This is because they are primarily plastic construction with a cheap rotating motor and offset spindle to move the blades.

On first use I noticed the motor slowing considerably when applied to short hair. The motor often took a long time to get up to speed.

With less than 10 uses, the clippers have now stopped altogether. Remington weren't much interested, saying that they would pass my feedback on; sorry, that's it. So I dismantled the unit to have a look. Hair from the blades can go straight into the drive mechanism, where it is caught by the lubricant and promptly gums up the works. But even after carefully removing all hair, the motor is very slow and stops if you even breathe on it. This is not a product which is well designed or intended to last any length of time. I reckon you would be lucky for it to last out the warranty.

clip on mechanism is constantly snapping off and then can’t be used. I’ve now spent more than the price of the new trimmer replacing the heads and will never buy a wahl clipper again. The last head snapped off after the 4th time taking it off to clean. I showed the staff at shaver shop who acknowledged there had been some bad batches but still had to pay. In my opinion the head they sell as the primary one for the product should have a longer warranty than 3 months.

It’s a shame because it does exactly what I want, doesn’t overheat and trims very well. But the quality of their products are horrible.

Effective quick hair trimming – I've had the Remington rapid cut ultimate for a month, I've used it a couple of times with the wide 1.5mm guide. I like that it has a wide range of… Read more

wide and narrow guides, something some manufacturers or models don't have, though I haven't used the narrow trimmers yet. The trimmers are all dedicated, rather than the less useful single trimmer with adjustable length.

I find the trimmer comfortable to hold and effective to cut hair. Because of its width it's much quicker than narrower trimmers I've used in the past. I don't have an opinion on battery life yet, but my other Remington trimmers last a long time between charges, I'll update this review if I find anything different.

I also have the Conair Crew Cut, a circular hair trimmer. The Remington has completely replaced that product. The Crew Cut is fine, probably a similar time to do a hair cut, but the Remington is more versatile. You have more control with the Remington, you can do sideburns more easily. and it produces a more even cut.

All in all I think this was a good purchase, and I'd buy it again.

Avoid – Don't bother buying this is you want replacement clipper guards. You can't get them. Confirmed directly with gillette. They are flimsy and they will break.

Middle aged man trimming beard

What's the difference between clippers and trimmers?

The main difference between clippers and trimmers comes down to the blade size. Clippers have larger blades and are designed to cut long hair whilst trimmers have thin blades which effectively cut and style short hair.

If you have long hair and want to chop off a few inches, then a hair clipper will work best. If you have short hair and want to get a closer shave, then a trimmer is your best bet. If you have long hair and want to get a buzz cut, then you’ll benefit from using both - a clipper to cut off the majority of your hair and then a trimmer to get a closer shave.

A clipper is intended for bulk hair cutting on larger areas, whereas a trimmer is designed for edging, outlining, dry shaving and light shaping on smaller areas such as the back of the neck, around the ears and the sideburns.

Clippers and trimmers come with attachments called guards or combs, which are made in different sizes. The combs attach on top of the blade and the size dictates how much hair it cuts.

Whether you’re wanting a buzz cut, to trim your beard or other areas of the body, a trimmer is a great choice for getting a closer and neat cut.

Types of hair trimmers

Before you decide on the perfect trimmer for you, it's important to consider where you’ll be using it and how often.

Beard trimmers

Are you looking to get a clean shave, define your jawline or simply maintain a long beard? You can benefit from purchasing a beard trimmer.

They usually come with two power sources, some can run on a rechargeable battery and others are powered by mains and need to be plugged in. Some have the option of either, making them versatile tools.

Depending on how often you’ll be trimming your beard or if you need to take it on the go whilst travelling will depend on how much you should splash out for a cordless, rechargeable model.

You also have to consider whether you'll need guides and attachments for your trimmer to maintain your desired look and length.

Some of the most popular brands for men’s grooming products include Philips, VS Sassoon, Remington, Wahl and Braun Grooming.

Ear and nose trimmers

The skin inside the nostrils and ears are very sensitive which is why you’ll need trimmers specifically designed for these areas.

While you can buy a separate trimmer for each area, you could save money by buying a trimmer with interchangeable heads instead.

Groomers

Groomers are similar to hair clippers but are designed to cut hair on the body. For men, they can be used to trim or shave the hair on the chest, abdomen, armpits or groin.

Groomers usually have non-adjustable heads and use a single head to trim the hair. Many groomers also come with adjustable length settings so you can maintain hair length on your body instead of shaving.

Multi-groom kits

Since most men need a combination of trimmers, shavers and groomers, some companies have started to bundle grooming and personal care products into a single product called a multi-groom kit.

These kits contain an electrical product with a single motor that comes with multiple changeable heads. Each head tackles body-removal on a different area of the body.

Multi-groom kits cost less, are easy to carry and easy to maintain since you only have to manage a single device instead of multiple devices. The downside is that they may be less effective at the functionalities they offer, since a jack of all trades is a master of none.

Grooming kits may also contain a variety of grooming additions including brushes, scissors, oils and combs of adjustable cutting length combs to give you a range of cutting lengths.

What to consider when choosing a men's hair trimmer or personal groomer

Corded vs. cordless trimmers

When choosing which power-source to go for, bear in mind that traditional wired trimmers provide endless power so you won’t have to worry about keeping your trimming time to a minimum. However, wireless trimmers are more convenient to use and provide a great degree of flexibility and portability.

Trimmer blades

When choosing a durable trimmer, you’ll want to check out what the blades are made of. Good quality materials include stainless steel, titanium and chromium. Blades can also be hypoallergenic, making them a wise choice for those with sensitive skin.

Self-sharpening blades can save you valuable maintenance time since they can give you a closer shave for longer.

Combs

Trimmers usually come with different combs to achieve different lengths. You can adjust the combs for short, medium or long hair. Combs let you choose between a long beard or a light stubble. Make sure that the trimmer you choose has the length options that you want.

When choosing guide combs, you should make sure they are not fragile and are stay in place whilst being used - you can find out this information by reading user reviews on various trimmers.

Maintenance

A good quality pair of hair clippers will not only save you a lot of money and time, but can also last many years if you look after them properly.

You can use a clipper cleaning brush to remove any remaining hair and small deposits between the blades and blade teeth, which if not removed, will eventually blunt the blades.

You can sterilise the blades after use with white vinegar or an alcohol rub. A liquid solution can also be helpful in removing hairs that brushes can’t reach. They prevent hair from clogging up in the first place as well.

These cleaning liquids are designed to cool, deodorise, lubricate, clean, prevent rust and decontaminate the blades.

Features you should consider

There are some features on men's hair trimmers and personal groomers that can make them easier to use.

  • Showerproof: Being able to use your groomer in the shower saves you time and the hassle of cleaning, as you can rinse your groomer and your face as you go.
  • Washable: Some trimmers and groomers have features that make cleaning them easier, such as easily removable components.
  • Metal blades: Stainless steel and titanium are considered great options for blade material; both are durable and resistant to rusting.
  • Rechargeable: If you want the convenience of using the trimmer without a cord, then a rechargeable model will come in handy.

Ease of use

Many parts of the body can be sensitive - that’s why comfort and convenience is something worth paying more for. You should consider investing in hypoallergenic and sharp, durable blades to avoid any skin irritation or cuts. You should also purchase a trimmer with a comfortable grip which makes it easier to maneuver and less likely to drop.

Dry or wet trimming

Depending on whether you like to trim before, during a shower or after, you should consider whether to go for a trimmer that’s for wet or dry styling. If you switch between both, there are beard trimmers that can accommodate both wet and dry trims.

Portability

How easily can you transport your trimmer? If you’re always travelling for work or you’re just a jet setter, you’ll want something you can easily pack in your carry on. You might want to opt for a grooming kit with detachable heads and universal voltage to keep yourself well-groomed no matter where in the world you are.

Price

Trimmers vary in price based on the features they offer, the brand and the quality. They can range anywhere between $30 to $200. Those in the upper range may include better-quality blades, a host of attachments and come with warranties. For the most part, you can find an affordable and good quality trimmer for you that covers everything you need.
