British Paints Prep 4in1 Questions & Answers
Verifiedwant to repaint table painted with white gloss paint Do I have to sand it back before using 4in 1??
Hi Bron You don’t need to sand it back to bare timber, but you do need to lightly sand the glossy surface to remove the shine. This helps the 4‑in‑1 primer bond properly and prevents peeling. Regards Donna - British Paints
thankyou!!

I am restoring old casement windows and removed all of the Old Glazing (Putty) and took back to bare timber. Decided to use Taubman's Oil based primer and have uses British Paints Paint and Prime water based Gloss on the first set that I Didn't take right back and prime. Can I use the Paint and Prime Water based on the oil based undercoat?
Thanks for your message Luke. S, the British Paints Paint & Primer Doors, Windows & Trim is designed to paint over existing, sound, oil and water based paints. Please note that Taubman's primers haven't been factory tested with British Paints topcoats; it would be best to do a test in an inconspicuous section of the window frame before committing to the full project, but in theory, this should be fine! Thanks - The British Paints Team
If I use BP 4 in 1 do I need to sand varnished chairs and tables?
Hi Rod, For painting over varnished timber, we recommend giving the surface a light sand before using British Paints Prep 4in1. Without sanding, you may be prone to peeling, flaking or chips. I have doors that have been oil based painted white in the past and they have yellowed. I want to change to a semigloss waterbased paint for the top coat, BUT can i use BP 4-1 oil base, as a base coat and paint and the water base over the top to help it all stick? and will in need ant /much sanding?
Hi Luke! You're absolutely on the right track! You will need to thoroughly sand back the oil-based paint before priming so that the existing paint is no longer glossy and dull to look at. Then we recommend you apply British Paints Prep 4-in-1 Oil-Based generously and allow it plenty of time to dry before applying your water-based top coats (such as British Paints H2O Enamel!) If you have any questions along the way, feel free to give us a call at 1800 086 690, and we'll help you out! Happy Painting! - The British Paints Team

What is the maximum humidity recommended when applying BP 4 in 1?

Hi there, will your 4in1 product be ideal for priming exterior bare timber (Australian hardwood and pine) ?
Hi Lance, Great question! British Paints PREP 4-in-1 would be great for this! For the best tannin-blocking, we recommend you use the oil-based primer for a fantastic finish. If there is anything else we can help with, feel free to give us a call at 1800 086 690. Good luck and happy painting! - The British Paints team
Is it good for resisting moisture entering the timber?
I sand pine who has been varnish after 2 coats (small area) still yellowish ,can I start applying a top coat or I am better to use a primer oil base?
Hi Ludo, To avoid peeling you would definitely be best to use a primer. As long as the varnish isn't water-based, we recommend you use the primer before applying your top coats. This will also give you a much nicer finish in the long run! If you have any other questions along the way, feel free to contact us on 1800 086 690 and we will happily help! Can I use prep 4in1 on chipboard edging please?
Someone asked a question after me. I know mine was a simple question, still important to me but no reply.
Hi Barb, Great question! We usually recommend using oil-based primers for chipboard, so you could use British Paints 1 Step Prep Oil-based for your project, however on MDF we cannot assure that it won't soften the glue for MDF. For personalised advice on your project, it would be best to contact us on 1800 086 690 so we can get you quick and instant advice! We look forward to hearing from you soon, good luck and Happy Painting! - Lucy at British Paints
Can British 4in1 be tinted to a light grey colour
Hi Danny, Great question! We do not usually recommend tinting as this may impact performance, but this can be tinted to some colours when a darker colour requires a tinted undercoat. For your project, please reach out to our technical team on 1800 086 690 for the best advice! We look forward to chatting with you soon! Thanks, Lucy at British Paints

What exact color is Prep 4 in 1 in terms of e.g. RGB? What are the disadvantages of using PREP as a final coat?
Hi Trevor! Our British Paints Prep 4in1 is closest to Love Note (R:246 G:246 B:241 LRV:92). While it may look fresh, we don't recommend leaving it without a top coat, as it does not have the protective or washable qualities that our top coat paints have. For protection against dirt, scratches and chips, it would be best to use 2-3 topcoats. To find out which products would be best for your painting project, feel free to give us a call on 1800 086 690 for more advice. Happy Painting! - Lucy and the British Paints team
15 years ago, I have given a new wood, exterior ,treated pine fascia a coat of 4 in 1and top coated with water based exterior paint. I have now sanded it back. Do I need to apply 4 in 1 again before applying top coat or can I simply apply a fresh top coat?
Hi Stephen, Thanks for your question, we can help you with that! It really depends on how much you have sanded it back. If it still has a coat of primer then you can simply paint with 2-3 coats of British Paints 4 Seasons over the top. However, if you've sanded it back to the bare timber, it will need another coat of British Paints 4-in-1 Prep before coating with 4 Seasons.
If you need any help or advice along the way, you can also reach our friendly technical team on 1800 086 690 who will be more than happy to give helpful advice. Thank you again for reaching out and we look forward to hearing from you! Good luck and happy painting!
